SEASON PREVIEW: NECESSARY SOPHOMORE LEADERSHIP IN PLACE FOR NEMCC FOOTBALL

The best football teams at Northeast Mississippi Community College over the last decade have been built around quality sophomore leadership.

Greg Davis, who is now the second longest tenured head coach in program history as he starts year number 11 in that role, believes that his 2025 edition has that successful formula in place.

The Tigers boast 28 sophomores on their roster and six others with a redshirt designation by their name. By comparison, Northeast’s 2023 team that went 6-3 overall featured right around the same numbers of returners and transfers.

“We feel like right now our football team is in a great spot,” said Davis. “The kids seem motivated and excited. Their character and attitude has been a blessing. This is what we live for. I love these guys.”

Twelve players with starting experience are back for the Tigers, including their top two quarterbacks in Caden Greer (Kosciusko) and Jeremiah Harrell

(Tupelo). The duo split their time behind center almost evenly as freshmen.

Greer had the better passing figures with 822 yards and five touchdowns while Harrell scored twice on the ground. Both completed more than 50 percent of their attempts through the air.

“I’m excited to see them play this year because last year it was probably one of our top three areas of concern, not that they didn’t have the talent, because of inexperience,” Davis said. “Our quarterbacks are athletic, I think they’ve got good arms and they get rid of the ball quickly.”

JT Beasley (Saltillo) and Makyi ReedJones (Lafayette) proved themselves to both signal callers last autumn. The tandem each had double-digit catches for a combined 525 yards with four touchdowns.

Jeremiah Augustin (Jupiter, Fla.), whose promising career at Northeast has been significantly hampered by injury, is back to full strength. He stands out as the Tigers’ tallest target at 6-5.

Isaiah Cobbs (Memphis, Tenn.) returns to the mid-south after spending last year at Washington State University. The consensus three-star prospect was named to The Commercial Appeal’s Dandy Dozen list after racking up more than 2,000 all-purpose yards between his junior and senior campaigns.

The primary spot on the field where Northeast must replace all of its production is running back. Dylan Lewis (Northwest Rankin) began last fall camp at that position, but switched over to defense and played in six games at linebacker.

Qua Middlebrooks (Tupelo) is reuniting with his former backfield mate in Harrell after spending their first collegiate seasons apart. He was a first-team alldivision honoree with 991 all-purpose yards and nine scores in his final prep campaign.

Dee Bingham (East Webster) should also get some touches for the Tigers. He was a Mississippi Association of

Coaches (MAC) Class 3A AllState selection that suited up in the Bernard Blackwell AllStar Classic.

Lakendric Draper (South Panola), Kemarrian Gray (Walnut) and Brooks Wallis (Northwest Rankin) should share the work load at tight end. Gray was a Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal small school all-area pick after amassing 1,378 all-purpose yards and 19 touchdowns in 2024.

The offensive line is anchored by two future standouts at the four-year level in tackles JT Fagan (Florence, Ala.) and Alfred Washington (Pensacola, Fla.). They have both piled up several NCAA Division I offers already entering the season.

“Both of my tackles bring a wealth of experience,” Davis said. “Alfred is probably one of the favorite kids on campus honestly. He power clings 340 pounds. He’s an impressive young man.”

The two starters at guard in Hunter Howard (Lake Cormorant) and Trace Wegmann (Kossuth) came home to Northeast after originally signing with other in-state rivals. Walker Thompson (Amory) has cemented his spot at center.

Others rotating in on the o-line include Stuart Goldman (Bessemer, Ala.), Beau Robinson (Northpoint Christian), Chris Soriano (Northpoint Christian), Cameron Watson (Lake Cormorant) and Matthew Windham (Booneville).

“I’m really optimistic about where we are right now as a complete offense,” said Davis. “We just look like a unit. We just do things a lot differently. We’re not sometimes putting a square peg in a round hole to make it work. We could be in some different packages that could help us out.”

The defense has several playmakers from one year ago back, including the trio of Madison Central High School graduates in Rickey Banks, Ryan McCall and Jameson Mosley at linebacker.

McCall and Banks were the Tigers’ top tacklers as freshmen with 59 and 39, respectively, while Mosley was not far behind with 37. They combined for 9.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.

“The triplets, I call them my kids in our group message. I think the world of those guys,” Davis said. “They’ve got the focus and discipline that’s leading our football team.”

Two more linebackers that Davis expects to shine are Trison Booker (DeSoto Central) and Curtis Brown (Canton). Booker saw action in all nine games for Northeast last year while Brown is a former MAC Class 5A all-state recipient.

There will be a lot of production by players with the last name of “Parker” as well. Antonio Parker (St. Louis, Mo.) and Jackson Parker (Florence) join the Tigers as transfers while Jayden Parker

(Fort Valley, Ga.) is back after making 25 tackles as a freshman.

Northeast is keeping 13 defensive backs on its final roster. The Tigers have solid depth at corner with Zay Fox (Calhoun City), Trevor Walton (Horn Lake) and Tre’Marcus Webb (Montgomery, Ala.).

Jeb Bolen (New Albany) was an MAC Class 4A allstate safety that rolled up 78 tackles as a junior. Zay Hubbard (Russellville, Ala.) was selected to the TimesDaily Large School allarea and All-Franklin County teams after registering 126 tackles and five interceptions last season.

Northeast has three big men returning on the defensive front in Tyrese Cathey (Independence), Kyshawn Kimble (Center Hill) and Idarius Leslie (Booneville). Leslie snagged two loose fumbles during his initial campaign with the Tigers.

J’Cameron Riley (Noxapater) grabbed the attention of the Tigers’ coaches at the annual Northeast Mississippi Football

Coaches Association (NEMFCA) All-Star Game. He flew under the radar as a two-time MAC Class 1A allstate winner.

“I rely on the defense a lot,” said Davis. “That’s what my philosophy has always been. When we’re good, it’s because the defensive production is high. The better you are on defense, your whole team is going to prosper because of the physicality. I’m excited to watch those dudes work.”

Freddy Lopez was perfect on extra points and made a season-long 43-yard field goal in his debut season at Northeast. His career-long including high school is from 51 yards out, which broke the Ripley program record.

Daniel Sherman (Northwest Rankin) will punt for the Tigers while Ben Gault (Amory) serves as the long snapper. Either Cobbs or Greer will be the holder on Lopez’s kick attempts.

Cobbs and Webb are among the specialist options for Northeast. Webb had a team-best 26 returns one year ago with a seasonlong 58-yard kickoff return against Southwest Mississippi Community College.

Davis’ staff remained almost completely intact with offensive coordinator Steadman Campbell, defensive coordinator Sean Cannon, special teams coordinator Cedric Shell and wide receivers coach Cole Rotenberry. The lone full-time addition was defensive line coach Trevor Stigers.

Three of the Tigers’ first four contests are on the road beginning with a trip to East Central Community College on Thursday, August 28. The division slate opens in week three as Northeast hosts Mississippi Delta Community College.
