THE SYNOPSIS
Nelly Jelly is an intelligent, determined, strong little girl… But sometimes she just needs a little bit of help from her friends –the MONSTERS!
Nelly Jelly is a 7-minute comedy fantasy pre-school show. It follows the adventures of Nelly Jelly and her bestie, Matteo, as they live a normal life, well… normal apart from the daily visits from Nelly’s monster friends.
The world of Nelly Jelly is pretty much the same as our own. This is a real world with real friends, real pets, real family and real children’s problems. That is, until Nelly hits one of those problems and that’s when the ‘magic’ happens! You see, Nelly Jelly has three friends that live in a monster world. This is a world that we see very briefly and Nelly never visits – humans just can’t get there – but her three friends can come here, into our world, and they can sense when she’s in trouble. SO… When the monsters are needed, they stop whatever they are doing in their monster world and burst onto the scene, ready to help Nelly Jelly.
Grown-ups never see Nelly’s monster friends, but Matteo (her best friend) and TeeJay (the family dog) can see and interact with them just like Nelly does. It’s not like they’re invisible to grown-ups, Nelly’s parents always somehow just miss them. And the monsters are no secret, Nelly tells her Mum and Dad all about the adventures she has with her monster friends and they are delighted to hear her imaginative monster tales.
NELLY JELLY CHARACTER
NELLY JELLY is a young girl with a strong personality and HUGE imagination.
Good-hearted, determined, optimistic and, whatever the chaos around her, she never gives up.
NELLY JELLY is no different to any other child. She loves to play and explore, but when things go wrong or she has a wobbly moment… that’s when the ‘magic’ happens!
After all, she’s only 6 and when you’re only 6 you just can’t help running into a problem (or two)… and that creates a call in the monster world
THE MOOONSTERS
The monsters are Nelly Jelly’s best friends. Each of the monster characters will have a selection of monster abilities – each one unique to the character. While we will start with a few for each monster, these can be expanded upon as the series progresses and Nelly Jelly learns more about her friends.
JAM – is a big female monster. Loving and protective, particularly of Nelly Jelly. She is positive, happy and innocent. Her monster powers include super-strength. Unfortunately, she doesn’t usually think through the consequences of her super-strength before she uses it and it often goes a bit too far (this has given her the catch-phrase “my bad!”).
Jam leaves the monster world and enters Nelly’s world through a revolving bookcase in the house or through the birdbath in the garden.
THE MOOONSTERS
JIM – is another big monster, slightly smaller than Jam but nowhere near as strong. He is neat, analytical and a little tense, characteristics which play against his large size. Jim is quite clever in a ‘book learning’ kind of way and considers himself to be very wise. Unfortunately, he only has one book – ‘The Big Monster Book of Humans’, which isn’t always as accurate as he would like it to be so he’s constantly correcting it, making footnotes and additions.
One of Jim’s monster powers is his ‘beastly bellow’; this is a loud roar that can move objects across the room – like a mini-focussed-hurricane.
Jim leaves the monster world and enters Nelly Jelly’s world by whizzing down a chute from the ceiling in the house or from a slide that appears from a tree in the garden.
THE HUMAN WORLD: GEN Z PARENTS, FRIENDS
& PET
MATTEO –
Is a young boy and Nelly Jelly’s best friend. He is kind, calm and caring but often gets frustrated by the chaos the monsters bring. He loves Nelly and will always follow her lead, but he sometimes worries that they haven’t thought things through enough –usually when it’s too late.
TEEJAY –
Is a dog. Intelligent enough to have human qualities but still mostly acts like a dog and doesn’t speak. He’s playful, happy, determined and loyal. TeeJay is very expressive and has a cheeky/mischievous side that can lead him and others into trouble.
MUM & DAD
GEN Z STYLE –
While the parents have a presence in the show, they are usually in the background. We know the kids are okay because the parents are there, but they will rarely be the focus of the episodes.
THE EPISODE STRUCTURE
We OPEN with a theme song that gives us all the background the viewer needs to know. Nelly Jelly is a girl who loves to play and explore, but when things go wrong, she has a group of monster friends that are always there to help her.
As we GO INTO THE EPISODE Nelly Jelly is in her house or garden. She will often be with Matteo and/or her parents. She will be doing a real-world thing that a child might be doing (cleaning her teeth, tidying her room, playing with her toys, wrapping a present, putting on a show, colouring in etc), but then hits a problem…
When Nelly Jelly hits her problem, it creates a call in the monster world. This is when we CUT TO a brief snapshot of what the monsters are doing in their world, but we don’t see it for long – it’s time to go to Nelly Jelly’s rescue!
The monsters burst onto the scene in Nelly Jelly’s world and do their best to help Nelly Jelly.
It’s important to remember that Nelly Jelly is the driver of the story and the monsters don’t solve her problem for her. In fact, because of their monster powers and their ineptitude, they often seem to be making things worse. But somehow, as things go wrong, it always turns out that the wrong turns lead to Nelly Jelly solving her own problems.
Once the problem is resolved, the monsters may stay to play for a while, or they may go back to their world and finish whatever they were doing when they were interrupted by the call.
