Many brides are surprised that most vendors insist on knowing their budget before providing a detailed proposal. Truth is, this saves you both time and prevents miscommunication, sticker shock and getting attached to an idea you just can’t afford.
Because you’re a busy bride with limited spare time, you’ll want this process to be as efficient as possible. Also, the vendors you’re interviewing respect your time and aim to make the proposal process as simple and straightforward as possible. With knowledge of your budget, each vendor will be able to provide a proposal in the price range you have specified.
A proposal with no budget guideline has several dangers. The first one is sticker shock. Many brides are truly shocked by the cost of wedding elements. Being surprised by your proposal price is not only unpleasant, but it may cause you to eliminate a wedding vendor from consideration who is truly capable of supplying a fantastic alternative for half the price—they just had no idea how much you wanted to spend!
Beyond the sticker shock, there’s another danger: attachment! You’re likely to become attached to all of the beautiful options conjured up in that initial proposal—and they’re way out of your price range. This will only create disappointment down the road as you find it impossible to be satisfied with more budget friendly alternatives.
Your style, taste, and personal preferences are equally as important as your budget. But, if you start out with a proposal that’s above your budget, trimming it down will be the only solution. That will mean parting with some elements you may love, and it also will delay arriving at your “budget happy place” while your salesperson revises your proposal. To avoid this dilemma, simply share your budget with vendors in your first conversation.
There’s a possibility that your vision and budget aren’t a match for a particular vendor, and that’s okay! If they aren’t able to offer the service or product you’re looking for within the amount you’re willing to pay, don’t be shy about telling them your budget is firm and you’ll have to look elsewhere.
If you consult several reputable vendors and continue to hear your vision can’t be accomplished within the amount you want to pay, it’s probably an indication your budget isn’t reasonable. Consider shifting money from another category within your overall budget, or open your mind to more budget friendly options that still allow you to have a great event.
Great vendors will do their best to offer an alternative to suit your budget, whether it’s a fabulous short rib small plate station instead of filet mignon, or ranunculus for your bouquet instead of peonies.
Occasionally, brides can get stuck in what is referred to as 'proposal la-la land.' This is what happens when you continue to swoon over Pinterest pictures and celebrity weddings featuring ideas far outside your budget range. Remember, the goal is to arrive at a proposal you’re happy with and can afford.
Some couples say they don’t feel comfortable sharing their actual budget with vendors they’re interviewing, for fear that they will "use up all the money,” and I want to offer some insight on that topic. Any vendor you’re considering hiring should make you feel comfortable and cared for as a customer. If at any point you feel pressured in a used-carsalesman-fashion, you’re in the wrong place.
When it comes to budget, remember: you’re in charge. Your florist or caterer isn’t going to reach into your wallet and take your money. When you agree on a price, make sure you’re comfortable with the amount you’re spending.
You’ll make your planning process easier, avoid disappointment and sticker shock and develop a great relationship with your vendor team by sharing your budget from the beginning.

Start with your Budget and Style
In Chicago, the average cost of a 150-person wedding is approximately $42,000 with downtown weddings costing more ($51,000) and suburban weddings costing less ($33,000). When you start planning your wedding, one of the very first things you’ll need to create is a budget. The most helpful approach for you, your partner, and your respective families will be to openly discuss how much everyone will be able to contribute. Today, it is not uncommon for the bride and groom to foot the entire bill, or for the families to share the expenses. When discussing your expenses with your loved ones, be sure to remain courteous and realistic.

Before you go all Pinterest crazy and the little green monster inside of you starts to take over, we want to give you a bit of guidance to make sure that during your wedding planning process, you stay true to you. We know on a regular basis we are plagued with an overwhelming urge to keep up with the Joneses and it can be especially difficult to fend off that urge when it comes to your wedding. Here, we’ve compiled some basic tips to help you identify your true style as a couple and arm you with the know-how you’ll need to pull it all together.
Ultimately, you know deep down inside what's truly important to you. Just know this: your wedding is the first big event you will host together as a couple so it's the first time to let your personalities truly shine in front of friends and family. Whatever your source of inspiration, make decisions that feel right to you, not what you've seen other couples do.
Everyone has a hobby, activity, cause or pledge they fully support and this may be just the place to draw inspiration from. Show off your priorities in life to your guests by finding inspiration from what your true passions are.
Your venue will have a great deal of impact on the environment of your wedding. If you opt for a barn, you'll likely want to go for a more rustic feel. Or, if you book the most prestigious hotel in town, a glamorous wedding for you it is! Don't overlook your biggest expense in the wedding as a possible source for your overall theme too.
Are you a morning person or night owl? Whatever your preference, the time of day you ultimately choose to host your wedding ceremony and reception will affect the feel of the event. If you and your fiance are up and at 'em each day with a morning coffee, a brunch wedding just might be the thing for you. The possibilities are endless!
Inspiration abounds from a myriad of places and a muse might be just the thing you center your wedding style around. Your favorite movie, color, flower, character, season or destination. Pick something near and dear to you and let it guide all of your style decisions.
When you put together your guest list you'll either be looking at a large event or intimate gathering. The amount of people you choose to invite will affect the environment so when looking for sources of inspiration, remember how big or intimate the event will feel with the amount of friends and family in attendance and work off of that.
Be considerate of family traditions and wants but don't feel chained to them.
Be authentic to YOUR true style.
Create a budget, fine tune it and stick to it.
Edit. Edit. Edit. Start with a big picture and bring it into focus from there.
Manage the guest list... Don’t feel obligated to invite everyone. This will help your budget too.
Do you and the future hubs have a common interest that brought you together? Flying, skydiving, traveling or food? Whatever it is you spend your free time doing, consider letting it be the source of your wedding style. Golf anyone?
If you're a Great Gatsby girl at heart, a formal setting just might be the style for you. But, if a laid back casual setting is for you, so be it. Consider your personal preferences on dressing down or up when identifying the style wedding you want.
Do you hail from a great land afar or find yourself among a long lineage of great folks? Then let your family history and heritage guide the style of your wedding and enjoy reminiscing with your parents and loved ones about your roots.
The time of the year could greatly affect the overall style of your wedding. Temperature and foliage are great places to find inspiration and build your wedding style around.
Don't spend too much energy focusing on what others are doing.
Don't let the party details outshine the magic of your marriage.
Don't skimp on wedding vendors. Trust us... you get what you pay for.
Don't sweat the small stuff.
Branding might be a term you've only thought to be relevant to marketing departments. When it comes to modern day weddings, branding on a personal level takes company logos and color combinations and transforms them into monograms, slogans and themes.
Monograms, color preferences, favorite fonts and even paper weights are the essential tools-of-the-trade wedding stationers and designers use to make your personal style shine through to family and friends.
If you want to create a custom wedding brand, your stationer is the go-to creative guru to turn to. They are the graphic designers behind all the great typography and scroll work you see in wedding magazines and blogs.
Here are several places we recommend you use your personal wedding brand...

My goal was to design a Fall-inspired look in a non-traditional way. A favorite element was the sweetheart table with layers of details and dramatic floral installation. The curved petals of the Lotus Blossom were an inspiration that we carried throughout, from the pattern of the charger plates, to the open leaves of the menu card, to the intricate mandala backdrop. I was inspired by the love story of Potter Palmer and his beloved Bertha that led to him giving her one of the most extravagant wedding gifts of all time — The Palmer House. Rich tones of gold, burgundy and hunter green against the ivory background of the Grand Ballroom reminded me of the elegant galas back then and the romantic events happening now.
A Vetted Resource of the Most Reputable Special Event Locations Across Chicagoland.
Our Venue Guide is all about finding the right location for your wedding. After all, it all starts with your venue. There are appropriate facilities for parties of all sizes, but when you’re choosing the perfect spot for your next event, all of those options can be overwhelming. The size of the crowd will narrow your choices, but then there are still numerous types of venues to consider.
Whatever your particular tastes, when the time comes to choose your wedding location, know what to look for in a venue before you book.
See more details from the wedding featured here on page 176.
So, exactly what type of occasion do you envision for your upcoming wedding? Knowing this will ease your venue search because the setting affects the overall style tremendously. From country clubs to hotels, city clubs, resorts, barns, private mansions and everything in between... you’ve got options.
HOW MANY HOURS DOES MY RENTAL FEE INCLUDE? ARE THERE OVERTIME CHARGES?
Some venues charge by the hour for their facility. Know exactly what is included, and allow plenty of time for set up and tear down.
HOW DO YOU CHARGE? PER PERSON, BY THE HOUR OR FLAT FEE?
It’s always good to know how your venue charges for rental. It's likely facilities that include catering will charge a per person rate and venues without catering will charge a flat fee or hourly rental.
CAN I BRING IN MY OWN VENDORS OR DO I HAVE TO USE A PREFERRED VENDOR LIST SUPPLIED BY THE VENUE?
Many venues will supply you with a list of their preferred vendors to use. This can be helpful to the bride who needs direction but also a hindrance for brides who know exactly who they'd like to use. Clarify with your venue if it's required or not to use their vendors before you book.
CAN I BRING IN MY OWN ALCOHOL?
Venues that don't carry their own liquor license may allow brides to bring in their own alcohol. This is not typically the norm, but there are a few venues out there with this option. Remember, if you do opt to bring in your own alcohol, you'll want to hire a bar service to tend to guests.
IF NOT, IS THERE AN ALCOHOL MINIMUM?
Often venues with liquor licenses will have a bar minimum in addition to the cost of their venue rental.
HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL THE SPACE HOLD (NOT JUST OFFICIAL CAPACITY) ACCORDING TO MY ROOM SET UP?
Your room set up will greatly affect the amount of guests you can have at your wedding. You'll want to focus on how many guests you can fit into the room with a seated dinner, estate table, dance floor or buffet set up.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE VENUE RENTAL?
Most venues have items that are included in the cost of their rental like dance floors, tables, chairs, standard linens, etc. But, there are several venues that don't offer this and could result in an additional cost to you.
WHAT IS THE PARKING SITUATION?
Valet parking, limited options, street parking or ample complimentary parking for guests are all important things to consider.
WILL THERE BE OTHER WEDDINGS ON THE SAME DAY?
Ask whether your event will be the only one happening on property or if there will be others. Other events may infringe on your time use of the venue or create confusion for guests so best to be prepared.
HOW MUCH ARE TAX AND GRATUITY? ARE THEY INCLUDED IN THE PACKAGE PRICES?
Taxes and gratuity can vary greatly. Some venues include both in their package prices while others add it on. Be sure to consider this when you are planning, as it can be an extra 30% or more.
The thing about a wedding venue is... there are a lot of extras, options and upgrades and every single venue has a different package and procedure. So, to make sure you are comparing apples to apples, use this handy checklist when identifying the best venue for you.

HELP IS HERE.
With its timeless gem of a spring-fed lake, the Lake Geneva area has been known as a vacation destination for more than a century. Although settlement began in the 1830s, it wasn’t until after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 that massive estates began to materialize along the shores of Geneva Lake. Wealthy Chicagoans sent their families here, traveling back and forth by train, while their city homes were rebuilt.
Expansive summer homes were built for national names such as Wrigley, Selfridge and Drake, and many of these estates still stand today. The 20.2-mile public shore path is a top attraction, as you can walk around the entire lake for a front-row view of its historical mansions and modern-day estates. Or walk a portion of the path and enjoy a boat cruise back to your starting point through the Lake Geneva Cruise Line.
Sparkling and clean, Geneva Lake itself is ideal for boating, swimming and all sorts of watersports, from sailing and paddle-boarding to wake-surfing and skiing. There are sailboats, vintage steam boats and even larger vessels available to rent for bridal showers, bachelor or bachelorette parties, rehearsal dinners or wedding receptions. And of course, there’s always the option of spending a lazy afternoon at the beach!
Nearby Delavan Lake has its own storied history as well, with five noteworthy homes built by Frank Lloyd Wright still standing on its shores. Boat tours are offered through Lake Lawn Resort for a cruise along the lake’s 11 miles of shoreline. It’s also a popular fishing lake, both in the summer and winter.
If you’d like to tie the knot on the water, the Riviera Ballroom is in the heart of Lake Geneva. Opened in 1932, the city-owned Riviera was a popular venue for some of the biggest names in music history, including Louis Armstrong. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 and its restored second floor ballroom has an expansive view of the lake.
Expansive summer homes were built [here] for national names such as Wrigley, Selfridge and Drake, and many of these estates still stand today.
For bridal parties, the area is home to some of the finest resort spas, day spas and salons, offering a wide range of amenities for true relaxation. Some include everything from a fitness center to indoor pool, tennis courts, climbing wall, sauna and steam rooms. Spa services range from a massage for two to manicures, pedicures, body wraps and chemical peels.
For the bachelor, adventure awaits in the form of many award-winning golf courses, ranging in difficulty and terrain. There’s also a zip line tour through the Wisconsin woods, laser tag and paintball facilities nearby.
And for all of the family and friends arriving in Lake Geneva for your event, fresh restaurant options await. Throughout the downtown and surrounding area, guests will find plentiful choices ranging from intimate bistros with outdoor seating to fine dining at resorts and around the lake. And don’t forget the shopping! Lake Geneva’s downtown has dozens of boutiques and specialty shops. Browse for clothing, home furnishings, antique treasures or that unique piece of art—Lake Geneva has it all.
Just across Lake Michigan, a not-so-far-away destination offers stunning, picturesque scenery with the nation’s longest freshwater coastline, wildlife refuges and over 100 state parks. Combined with its rich automotive and arts history, Michigan is an ideal place for a romantic getaway, whether it’s a honeymoon, or everything from the bachelor party to the reception.
The state’s coastline offers scenic views, 129 lighthouses and numerous islands. Among these islands, situated in the waterway between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, is Mackinac Island. No automobiles are allowed in this Northern Michigan escape—visitors find their way around the island on bicycles or by carriage. The island’s quaint setting is the perfect backdrop for fairytale weddings. With just under 50 local wedding vendors, plenty of lodging, a variety of recreational activities and historic sites, and great shopping, Mackinac Island has everything you’ll need for a destination celebration. Before you leave, be sure to indulge in some of the island’s delicious (and famous!) fudge…or fill your wedding dessert table with it!
Not far away is Traverse City and the Grand Traverse region—home to several wineries, the National Cherry Festival and an assortment of wedding venues. Take advantage of the area’s natural beauty and exchange vows in a romantic vineyard or barefoot in the sand of nearby beaches. For a post-wedding adventure, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore offers miles of hiking trails, impressive sand dunes and scenic views from towering bluffs. Or, take an exciting boating excursion on one of Traverse Tall Ship Company’s replica schooners.
Those in search of a more historical, urban setting should take a trip to Detroit. Known as The Motor City, Detroit is home to the first Ford automobile and The Henry Ford—an indoor/ outdoor museum named after its creator. Having one of the largest theater districts in the county, the city is also known for its rich arts history. Visitors can enjoy local museums and

attractions such as the Motown Museum and the Detroit Institute of Arts, which holds Diego Rivera’s intriguing Detroit Industry Murals. Set aside time for shopping and a bite to eat at the Eastern Market—one of the country’s largest year-round markets. Just an hour away is the culinary hotspot of Ann Arbor, where you’ll find even more great shopping, arts and culture, and over 300 restaurants.
After the wedding, escape to the Upper Peninsula for an adventurous getaway. Take in the beauty of the region’s wildlife refuges, breathtaking waterfalls and endless acres of forest. Surround yourself with fresh air and

All this is waiting, just across the lake. From exciting nightlife and tourist attractions, to picturesque scenery and miles of shoreline, it’s easy to fall in love with all Michigan has to offer.
By Anne Morrissy
Planning your wedding reception can be overwhelming, so we talked to Sarah Rodriguez, wedding/event planner and owner of Chicago-based Sarah Kathleen Events, for her advice for the best way to schedule a wedding reception.
1. GUESTS ARRIVE.
Rodriguez says most couples are forgoing a traditional receiving line in favor of greeting guests at their tables during dinner. Upon arrival, guests enter a cocktail reception. A card and gift table, sometimes identified with a small, tasteful sign, should be set up close to the entrance. The guest book can be placed nearby.
2. THE GRAND ENTRANCE.
The latest wedding trends involve getting creative with the bride and groom’s entrance to the reception. “Many couples opt for dances or some other fun theme,” Rodriguez explains. Often, the parents of the bride and groom will be introduced first. Next comes the bridal party, and finally the couple makes their grand entrance and takes their place at the head table.
3. CUTTING OF THE CAKE.
While it may seem counterintuitive to cut the cake so early in the night, Rodriguez says the benefit is twofold – first, you are able to capitalize on having the attention of the whole room following the grand entrance. Secondly, performing this tradition early allows the caterers to cut and plate all of the cake in time for it to be served as dessert. (For couples who opt for a small “cutting cake” but serve guests from a sheet cake instead, the cutting of the cake may still take place after dinner.)
4. THE TOASTS.
Again taking advantage of the benefit of the guests’ attention, the wedding toasts make a natural transition from the cutting of the cake.
Many cultures have special traditions that take place during a wedding reception, from the guests pinning money to the bride's dress at a Polish wedding to dancing the Hora at a traditional Jewish wedding. Adding these cultural traditions can personalize the reception.
The number of toasts is up to the couple but may include the parents of the bride, the parents of the groom, the best man and/ or the maid of honor. Rodriguez points out that scheduling the toasts prior to dinner is especially effective at weddings that opt for a dinner buffet or food stations, as this is the last time you can be assured that all of your guests will be in their seats at once.
5. DINNER IS SERVED.
For a multi-course, plated dinner, the logistics should be left to the catering company. However, for buffets and food station-style dinners, couples may be involved in deciding the order in which tables should be dismissed, to avoid long lines and allow the caterers sufficient time to restock as needed.
6. TIME TO DANCE.
After dinner is cleared, the couple may wish to say a short thank-you toast before transitioning to the dancing portion of the evening. This is also when a bouquet or garter toss may happen, though Rodriguez says many couples are replacing that tradition with an “anniversary dance” that invites all of the married couples to the dance floor, ultimately presenting the bouquet to the couple that’s been married the longest.
7. LATE-NIGHT SNACK.
Many couples choose to offer a late-night snack served toward the end of the evening. This often takes the form of a fun food with meaning to the couple. The late-night snack can be set out on a display table or may take the form of a food truck parked outside the reception.
8. THE GRAND EXIT.
Rodriguez says that some event planners will stage a grand exit photo in the middle of the dancing to ensure that all of the guests are there to participate. However, she recommends that the grand exit (which may include sparklers, glow sticks, paper airplanes or other fun props) be saved to the end of the dancing as a way to put a final cap on the night and encourage guests to make their exit from the venue.
Rodriguez points out that the most important thing to remember at the wedding reception is to have fun, and enjoy the company of the friends and loved ones who have come together to help you celebrate. If you’ve done your planning and hired good people, the details should take care of themselves.
Besides the setting, your wedding vendors will make the most impact on the success of your wedding day. The professional services they supply like wedding planning, coordination, entertainment, floral design, rentals and catering are the essential event elements no party could take place without. Their expertise orchestrate the senses you and your guests will experience throughout the day, so finding the very best companies to execute your style is of utmost importance.
That’s where we come in. The Celebration Society is connected to the most reputable wedding vendors across Chicago. We have a personal relationship with almost all of the vendors represented in this book. Seek their expertise and soak it up.
You’ll be a better hostess because of it.
See more details from the wedding featured here on page 166.
The proposal was everything you dreamed it would be. You’re rocking the diamond ring. You’ve called your mom. Now what? Now you begin to put your vendor team together. Here’s how (and when!) to find the people that will move heaven and earth to make sure your day is perfect.
Plan on hiring a full-service planner at least 12 months from your wedding day. You should choose your wedding planner first to reserve your date on their calendar and have their guidance during the entire wedding planning process. From the beginning to the end, your wedding planner will be your experienced counsel for every vendor interview, contract, and scheduling question.
How do you charge? Per hour, lump sum, percentage of total budget?
Are there specific vendors you like to use?
What is the process of selecting and hiring vendors?
Can I use other vendors?
What is the process of paying vendors? Is that done through you or direct to vendors?
Do you handle vendor services, contract and payment processing?
Do you handle guest list coordination and RSVPs?
What is your specialty?
How many meetings will we have together? In person, via phone?
How much does it cost?
Many full-service wedding planners will charge a percentage of your total wedding cost. Day-of coordinators in Chicago will likely charge $3,000-$4,500 depending on the scope of work.
Venue and catering should be booked about 12 months from your wedding day. Book early to reserve your preferred wedding date as event venues will likely be booked for weddings up to a year in advance. Your budgeting will rely on whether or not catering is included in the pricing on your contract, so do your research. The style of your wedding venue will affect the overall style of your wedding. Whether you choose a glamorous ballroom or countryside barn—everything from your wedding dress, flowers to music selection will be affected.
Do you specialize in specific food types?
Is a tasting included in your services?
Will you provide waitstaff? Is that extra?
If so, what is the ratio of staff to guest?
What will your staff wear?
How do you work with my wedding planner and venue?
Do you provide hot meals for our vendors? If so, what is the menu and cost per person?
Do you handle china, silverware and glassware rental?
What do you charge for cake cutting and serving?
How much does it cost?
Is tax and gratuity included?
How do you handle clean up and trash removal?
Catering costs are dependent on the menu, venue and set up, but for a starting point can run between $35$110+ per person not including any alcohol, linen or decor upgrades.
Plan on purchasing your wedding dress about 11 months from your wedding day. Once you decide on where you will get married and where the reception will be, it’s time to go dress shopping! Knowing your wedding location is just as important as knowing your dress size when it comes to shopping for a gown, so be sure to have a solid idea of your venue. Most bridal stores will need to place the order for your dress from the dress designer at least 10 months in advance, while custom creations could take even longer. Pick your bridal party and groomsmen attire now too.
Are appointments required to try on bridal gowns and bridesmaid dresses?
How far in advance should I schedule an appointment, and how long do appointments last?
How many guests can attend the appointment with me? Who should I bring?
Should I bring special undergarments, shoes or accessories?
What sample sizes do you carry?
What designers do you feature?
What price range can I expect?
Do I have to pay in full before the gown is ordered?
How long will it take for my gown to arrive?
Are alterations included?
How much does it cost?
Wedding dresses are going to range enormously depending on designer, intricacy of details (like lace or beading), and how much of the gown is custom. An average dress, however, is going to hover anywhere from $2,000-$6,000+
Plan to book a photographer 11 months from your wedding date. Since photography businesses are most often run by a single person or small teams of creative professionals that work one wedding per day, it's important to book early. Be sure to take your venue into account when determining your preferred photography style. Digital photography thrives both indoors and out, and has a timeless look while light and airy film photography should be reserved for those celebrating their day outside, since it needs as much natural light as possible.
What is your primary style of photography? Traditional or documentary?
How independent is the photographer? Does he want to know all the shots you’d like or free reign to shoot all the moments of the day at will?
Will the photographer I book be the one to shoot my wedding?
How long after the wedding will the photos be ready?
What happens if the photographer is ill on the day of the wedding?
What are your backup procedures?
What is included in your pricing? Albums, hours of coverage, engagement session, etc.?
How much does it cost?
Professional wedding photographers will likely charge $3,000-$6,000 depending on experience level, demand, medium, and packages.
Think about your reception music and book as soon as you have your venue reserved. Whether you are leaning toward a live band or rockin’ DJ with light show, music sets the tone for your evening. Your band leader or DJ will play an important role at your wedding, so we strongly recommend meeting with them in person. As the master of ceremony, they will be in command of the flow of your evening, from introducing the wedding party to announcing your departure and getting your guests outside to say goodbye. They can also read the energy on the dance floor to keep it busy and fun for everyone. Also consider your music for the ceremony: do you want piano music, a string quartet, a vocalist? You may need to reach out to several musicians in order to bring your vision to life.
How much set up time do you need?
Do you have demos online where I can view your performance?
What is your signature sound?
How do you feel about a request list?
How many breaks will you need?
What is your experience being the master of ceremonies?
How much does it cost?
A professional DJ will likely charge between $1,200 to $2,000+ depending on their expertise and availability. Live bands typically start at $5,000 depending on size and demand. Ceremony musicians will likely charge an hourly rate.
HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Plan on hiring a videographer about 10 months from your wedding date. More often than not, a videography business is run by a single person or a duo of creative professionals that work one wedding per day. Much of why you’ll hire them is based on loving their editing style, ability to capture details most important to you (like a first dance, or the ceremony itself) and loving their pricing even more, so once you find your match, make it official by signing the contract. With a film, you'll be able to relive your day with your future family and remember even the smallest details you and your vendor team worked so hard to create.
What is your cinematography style?
Have you worked with our photographer?
How does the crew stay unobtrusive during the ceremony and reception?
How long after the wedding will the video be ready?
What is your process?
Am I allowed to make edits once you present the video to us?
What are your backup procedures?
What happens if the cinematographer is ill on the day of the wedding?
Professional wedding videographers will likely charge between $2,400$5,000+ depending on experience level, demand and packages
Choose your floral designer about eight months in advance. This gives you a good amount of time to get on the schedule for the best wedding florist in your area and brainstorm with them on your vision. With the help of your planner, you and your floral designer can select a color palette, make note of blooms you love (or hate!) and outline a proper budget for the arrangements you'll need. Knowing what styles you like before going into a consultation means more time talking helpful specifics.
What is your style?
What is your process?
Have you worked at this venue before?
How do items get returned after the wedding? Will you pick up?
Do you offer rental items.. vases, trellis,
decor... or must they be supplied via a rental company?
Can my guests take centerpieces home?
Do you charge for mockup centerpieces before my wedding or is that included?
Dahlias are my favorite kind of flower. Will they be in season for my wedding?
Flower pricing is dependent on the amount of decor at your wedding. You’ll want to budget starting at $1,500 for the basics like bouquets, boutonnières and know the sky is truly the limit for the rest.
Plan to hire a baker six to eight months in advance. While a cake baker can serve multiple weddings in a weekend, chances are they can’t serve an endless amount. So we say get on the schedule in advance by signing the wedding cake contract. Again, it’s likely you’ll have your tasting a bit later in the process, but reserving your spot in their weekend schedule ahead of time will make sure you get the cake baker you like the best. Before your tasting, be sure to research what types of frostings and finishes do best in your style venue.
Are you licensed by the state health department?
How does delivery work?
What happens if something is damaged on the cake in transit?
Do you do sugar flowers and custom sculptured pieces from sugar?
What are the options for cake flavors and fillings?
Fondant or Buttercream?
What is your average cost per slice?
Will you design a custom cake or do you have preset styles to choose from?
Is the cake stand provided by you?
Your wedding cake will likely cost approximately $4 - $12+ per slice depending on the complexity of the design, baker’s skill level and availability.
Look into booking your stationer six to eight months in advance of your wedding date. If you would like to send out save the dates, you’ll want to choose your stationery designer eight months in advance. For invitations only, you should start to look at options six months out. Traditional etiquette states invitations should be mailed out at least eight weeks prior to the wedding day. Custom stationery processes will likely take around two to three months, since multiple consultations, proofing and printing time needs to be taken into account.
Do you design custom work or sell from invitation lines?
Do you help with branding or custom monograms?
Is there a specific style you specialize in?
Do you offer calligraphy or addressing services?
Will you supply a proof before the invitation is officially printed?
What happens if there is an error?
How long after I place the order will the invitations come in?
Can I purchase additional personalized items like Save-the Date, welcome bags, favor tags, etc.?
Depending on the complexity of the invitation suites, you can expect to pay between $4 - $12+ per invite. Further customizations will increase your per piece price.
Plan on hiring your hair and makeup artist team about six to eight months from your wedding date. Chances are you are as thick as thieves with your hair dresser and have your cut and color pre-booked every time you leave the salon, and for good reason! But does your stylist do bridal updos? Many don’t. That's where on-site teams come in. Your beauty vendors will likely only be able to serve one full bridal party per Saturday. So book them sooner rather than later.
How far in advance should I book my appointment?
I’d like to book with my bridesmaids. Will you be able to accommodate all of us?
How much time should I allow for hair and makeup on my wedding day?
How much should I expect to spend?
Do you offer consultations and trials?
Do you offer hair extensions?
Do you offer onsite services? How far will you travel?
Can you accommodate sensitive skin?
Do you offer a touch-up kit or touch-up services?
On-site bridal hair will usually cost around $200 while full makeup application will average around $125. Bridesmaids and moms average around $85 for hair styling and $75 for makeup application. Trials and consultation for both typically run about $75

Shop for wedding bands at least three months before the wedding. Did you shop for the engagement ring together? Then you may have an idea of what bands will complement it. Do you want your bands to match? What about engraving: you may want to add your initials, wedding date, or meaningful phrase. Also take into consideration how often you will wear your wedding band (every day or not too often), your activity level (should you consider a durable design?) and how the ring actually feels on your finger as you parade around the store.
What are the payment terms?
Deposit and then final payment at pick-up?
How long does engraving take?
What if my ring doesn’t fit?
What if I damage my ring and it needs repairs?
Can my ring be easily resized?
How do I care for my ring?
Simple bands can start at about $1,000 and it’s up to your budget for the rest!
Looking for colored champagne flutes or uniquely shaped place settings, patterned linens or chair covers? Rental stores have chairs, tables, linens, china, crystal, silverware and more in various shapes, sizes and styles. You’ll also find beautiful serving accessories – from champagne fountains to elegant silver chafing dishes. Check with your caterer to find out what they provide and if they have different styles to choose from. A fully equipped rental store will also have a wide selection of ceremony accessories, or you can create a luxurious cocktail hour with hip lounge furniture and a martini bar.
Will you deliver and collect my rental items?
Is there a cost difference if I pick up and return the items myself?
What deposits are required?
Do you have a minimum rental amount?
What is the damage/deposit policy?
Will you set up my items?
You can rent by the piece, for example, a vintage china dinner plate or champagne flute will run about $2 each. For chair rental, think $6-$8 each.
Book your transportation at least four to six months in advance. Your arrival and your departure are two key moments in your wedding. Like so many other selections you are making, your mode of transportation can reflect your taste and personalities. Chicago has so many options, from horse-drawn carriage rides to Italian gondolas along the river, to vintage cars and stretch limos. And you may want to consider a trolley or bus for your guests, especially if they are staying at a hotel after your reception.
Are you priced by the hour? What is the minimum and how many stops does that include?
Do you offer shuttle service?
Does your price include taxes and gratuity? Are there other fees?
What attire will the driver be wearing?
Will beverages or snacks be provided?
What are the back-up options if the vehicle breaks down the day of the wedding?
Pricing will vary, depending if you are looking for a cozy ride for two or a party bus. Expect an hourly rate and minimum to start. For example, a party bus for up to five hours will be in the $1,500 to $1,800 range.

Whether you dream of a huge, elaborate celebration or an intimate, thoughtful gathering, the perfect gown is a vital element of every wedding. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of gown shopping:
Plan it out. Before you dive in to shopping for a wedding gown, make a list of things to consider, including: the location/season of the wedding (will you be outdoors? will you be in a very conservative church? etc.); your maximum budget for a dress (including alterations and headpiece); the shades or colors you prefer; and the shapes or styles you gravitate toward (though be flexible on these last two points!). Also choose who you will take with you to the salon appointments – many brides find it’s best to invite 1-3 trusted friends or family members who will give honest, gentle feedback.
Research bridal salons and make a few appointments. Smaller local bridal salons will offer a more genuine, personalized experience and are often willing to work with you on price, but their gown selection can be light. Larger bridal salons may carry a wider range of sizes and a larger selection but their sales staff are more likely to work on commission so you may experience a more high-pressure sales environment. It’s best to make appointments at multiple salons to see the full range of gown options. At each salon, be honest about your budget and resist the urge to try gowns that are vastly outside of that range.
Many brides find that buying a wedding gown can be a surprisingly emotional experience. It’s important to give yourself enough time, and to have the right expectations about the process.
Listen to the salon staff. While it is helpful to go in with a general idea of what you’re looking for, remember that the salon sales staff are experts and see hundreds or even thousands of women every year. Many brides find that the styles they go in coveting don’t suit them for one reason or another, and they often end up preferring the options the salon staff hand-selects for them instead. Similarly, because sizing of wedding gowns is so erratic, salon staff will have the best knowledge of which sizes to try.
Choose wisely. In a one-hour salon appointment, brides will typically try 8-13 gowns. At each salon you visit, ask if you can take reference photos to help you remember each design. Once you have seen a sufficient number of gowns, narrow the options down to your favorite 3-5 and make your choice from these. Be honest about your preferences, and don’t let anyone pressure you into buying a gown you don’t love.
Order your gown. Once you’ve found the gown of your dreams, don’t wait too long to order. While it’s possible the bridal salon may have the gown in stock in your size, it’s much more likely that they will be placing the order with the manufacturer, which can be a slow
process. As a result, it’s best to order your wedding gown six to 12 months before you plan to get married.
Plan your alterations. Before ordering your gown, make sure to ask the salon about the price and process of alteration once the dress arrives. Alterations generally run from $300 to $600 and should be factored in to the overall budget. In addition to general fit accommodations, alterations also include the gown’s bustle, which can be quite complicated depending on the design. Alteration appointments generally begin about four months before the wedding – expect to attend 1-3 fittings before the gown is finished.

If there’s one gray area in the wedding world, it’s paying gratuities. Long-standing etiquette says ones thing and modern trend says another. We say: if you loved your service—show it with a tip.
By Meghan Bishop
Whether your vendor owns their business or is an hourly employee matters little. Gratuity says "I'm so thankful for the extra care you showed to me," and giving shouldn't be determined by who the boss is. It's determined by the quality of service. Here's a list of the vendors you should plan to tip because of their onsite expertise at the end of your very long, very fabulous big day.
Traditionally, it has been thought that you don't need to give your wedding planner anything for a tip. But, considering they're the one vendor who has done the bulk of the work on your wedding—we say, why not? Did he/she knock your socks off by pulling off your wedding flawlessly? Was there a ton of extra work involved that wasn’t discussed when pricing was set? Whatever the case may be, you can feel comfortable giving between $100 to 10% of their fees in cash or a gift in the same amount to show your gratitude.
TIP: $100 to 10% of fees
In our opinion, your photographer and videographer will be the most important vendors you choose. Each photographer on the day of your wedding should be tipped $100200, and second shooters $50-75.
TIP: $50-200 per person
Not sure what to give the string trio that played your wedding march? What about the choir that sang as you lit your unity candle? If it was a professional group, 10% of the entire amount charged to be split amongst the musicians. If it’s a civic or church group and they didn’t charge, give a donation either to the group or the church—just as you would a religious officiant.
TIP: 10% of fee to be split among musicians
Every guest was on the dance floor and your party was non-stop all night! You should tip $25-50, per musician. For the DJ—he/she is the one person responsible for the entire flow and energy of your event. We think they deserve a whole lotta love for guaranteeing a good time.
MUSICIAN TIP: $25-50 per person
DJ TIP: $100-200
Your dad’s friend is a judge, your neighbor got registered online, your junior high school pastor, or your pastor now that you are an adult has accepted the job of conducting your service— etiquette says no cash should be given. Instead, give a thank you card and a gift card or a donation to the house of worship if affiliated.
TIP: A donation and thank you note will do
This varies depending on the region of the country you are in. In the Midwest, a 20 to 22% service charge is usually added to the catering contract. But if you are super happy with the service, you can give the catering manager a lump sum to distribute among the wait staff. You can get the anticipated number of wait staff from the caterer beforehand to help you prepare.
TIP: $20-50 per person (and check your contract)
Your bartender will deal with a bunch of guest craziness the evening of your wedding (i.e. "There is tooooooo much coke in my Jack").
Bartenders who work on a catering staff team make a higher hourly wage than what you'd expect in a restaurant so you can tip them the same as the other catering staff. No need to go above and beyond, unless you really want to.
TIP: $20-50 like the other catering event staff
Your driver will wait outside for 30 minutes as you say your goodbyes to your friends and family and make sure your take-away plate is in the car for your midnight snack before he drives clear across town to your desired place! Proper tip is 15-20% presented after arrival.
TIP: 15-20% of fees
This one is optional. Rental drop off delivery people sometimes get $20-50 per person depending on how much they are bringing in and having to set up. Most of the time you have a team of 2-4 depending on the size of the order and they will be the last ones out of the space at the end of the night.
TIP: $20-50 per person
HAIR STYLIST & MAKEUP ARTIST
As important as pictures are, your hair and makeup professional will help ensure you look the best! Hair and make-up professionals should get 15-20% of the total bill.
TIP: 15-20% of services
Some vendors may have gratuity included in their contract–if this is the case, no tip is necessary. Read your contract to be certain. Also, if a vendor does not fulfill what was expected, don’t feel obligated. And if you want to reward a vendor that you didn’t get a chance to see or interact with, don’t underestimate the power of a sincere thank you card with a little token of your appreciation inside. Tipping is something you should be prepared to do (a lot of) on your wedding day. The caliber of the professionals you hire will determine the amount of tips you should budget for.
Your cake and florals can add drama, color, and energy to your wedding day. Let your vendors create works of art that reflect your personalities and style. Here are some of our favorites!
By Terry Smedley Q & A
Whether you prefer a towering six-tier confection or a simplistic couple’s cake, choose the dessert that’s best for your day.
Should I steer clear of any frostings or finishes if I’m hosting an outdoor reception?
If you are having an outdoor reception during the hot months, try to steer clear of buttercreams that contain ingredients that can’t take the heat like cream cheese.
What’s the key to making a naked-style cake wedding worthy?
Most people who select naked cakes do so not because of the look of the cake (although most do love the simplicity), but because they aren’t a fan of frosting. They love that they can have more cake, less frosting and with the addition of floral or some decorative elements have a beautiful cake that tastes good.
My future husband and I aren’t really fans of cake. Do we still need to have one? What are my other options?
Oh heavens no, there are no hard and fast rules! Dessert buffets are hot right now. They are a fabulous alternative to cake or to supplement cake for your guests. The benefit of a dessert buffet is your guests get a variety of choices for their desserts, and can be designed to coordinate with and complement your reception.
What information should I have ready for our cake consultations?
Do your homework! Before you book a consultation, ensure the company provides the type of cake you are looking for. A baker may specialize in old fashioned cakes or naked cakes, so don’t ask them to create a cake style they don’t generally offer. Be prepared to leave a photo of your inspiration cake with the baker after your consultation.
Cake toppers: are they a thing of the past?
Cake toppers are making a comeback, but not necessarily the traditional bride and groom. More often you may see custom laser cut toppers that express the sentiments of the couple, such as “To the Moon and Back” or “Mr. and Mrs.” or clever custom cake toppers showcasing the couple and their interests.
I love the look of real flowers on a cake. Are they really safe to include?
Many flowers are in fact edible. Check with your florist to ensure that whatever they are providing for your cake is safe and organic. While all flowers are a treat to see, some ought to come with a warning label. The most common poisonous wedding flowers include lily of the valley, hydrangeas, stargazer lilies, angels trumpet, oleander and delphinium. If your preferred florals appear on this list, fret not. Consider adding faux tiers to the cake. These tiers blend with the design of the rest of
the cake, often covered in identical fondant or completely in flowers.
What are the hot trends?
We’re seeing personalization of cakes. Taking on themes from hot TV shows, to sports teams and comic book heroes. Flavor pairings are also trending. Creative options include Nutella, tequila and lime, orange and champagne, peaches and cream, caramel apple and almond amaretto just to name a few.
By Zach Thomas INSIGHT
In the midst of all the fun that comes with wedding planning, a bride ought to know a thing or two about those serious contracts she’s signing on the dotted line.
Why do I have to pay a deposit to vendors like photographers, DJs, planners, etc?
To discuss a deposit, it also becomes a discussion about contracts—they go hand-inhand. The contract spells out the agreement (date, time and rate; and what you should expect from the vendor, what the vendor should expect from you) and the deposit is the force behind that agreement. The deposit allows the vendor to be confident in turning away other potential clients for the same date, and it allows the couple to feel confident their vendor will show up and perform their hired duties the day of the wedding.
“The deposit allows the vendor to be confident in turning away other potential clients for the same date, and it allows the bride to feel confident their vendor will show up.”
Is a standard practice of wedding vendors to require a deposit? Yes. If the vendor you are choosing to work with doesn’t require a contract and deposit, you should be concerned about what other things they are leaving out of their business (e.g. insurance, back-up equipment, or experience). If there isn’t a contract and deposit requirement, that is a red flag. Remember, a contract and deposit also protects the customer and adds peace of mind that a vendor will show up and do the job they are hired for.
How much money should I expect to put down for my deposit? This amount varies, but 50% is fairly standard.
Read over any contract you are signing, and ask the vendor you are working with to explain anything you are unclear about. Weddings don’t happen for a number of reasons—break-ups, family disagreements, weather issues, and sometimes the couple get so overwhelmed planning they run off to Vegas to elope. If you need to cancel, notify the vendor immediately and just be open to having a conversation about what your contract may entitle you to. Many contracts have the flexibility to deal with the various
reasons for cancellation. Sometimes if the vendor is able to book another client with a comparable package on the same day, the deposit or a portion is refundable no matter the reason.
What if I pay a deposit and the vendor has to cancel?
You should ask for your deposit to be promptly refunded.
What type of legal wording should I look for in a vendor contract specific to deposits? You should make sure what is and what is not refundable is clearly articulated. Some vendors who work with multiple clients in a day may
allow for a partial return of deposit, within a certain period of time before the event. Most photographers can’t do that because it’s much harder to fill the date, especially the closer you get to the event.
What if I cancel, and I feel like I deserve my deposit back? The terms should be clearly spelled out in the contract. Weddings (and planning them!) are emotional, but when dealing with vendors a customer should always keep in mind that they are working with business owners.

Kristyna and Trevor opted for a fairly traditional wedding with 150 guests and a Catholic service at Our Lady of Mercy. The bride said yes to a Demetrios mermaid-style wedding dress featuring a beaded bodice, lace sleeves and a lace-detailed sheer back she found on sale at Macy’s. Her bridesmaids wore different styles of wine-colored dresses. The bride carried a full bouquet with lots of greenery from a family friend who created lavish bouquets for the bridesmaids as well.
Kristyna admits she snagged her photographer, Salde Codillo, from a friend's wedding because he was so easy to work with and made everyone comfortable during photos. And because the couple started out directionless when it came to décor, Boho Blush saved the day with an abundance of ideas that helped tie the wedding together.
Upon arriving at Acquaviva Winery, which emanated a rustic vineyard appeal, guests selected from a steak, chicken or salmon entrée, alongside a wine service with dinner. The Sugar Path provided a variety of desserts — from chocolate-covered strawberries to mini cupcakes with unique flavors like honey lavender to tiny pies and lemon bars — plus a fun churro-flavored wedding cake, which was a hit. The couple gave away Garrett Popcorn party favors from Chicago to bring a little bit of the city (where they got engaged) to the vineyard.

“Guests always talk about the food at weddings. Find a venue that has great food. My guests could not get over how great their meals were for ‘wedding food.’ And my smartest savings were renting decorations. It was $250 to rent all my decorations from Boho Blush and it truly made my wedding come together.”
Not everyone gets to experience all four seasons on their wedding day, but Becky noticed snowflakes falling onto the tangerine-colored leaves in mid-October as she slipped on her Martina Liana ballgown wedding dress with a beaded bodice and button-up lace applique back. Then, the wintry blast opened up to a beautiful blue summer sky before the ceremony at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, where the bride’s grandparents and parents were married. The groomsmen wore deep navy suits with taupe paisley embossed ties, whereas David stood out with a simple black bowtie. The bridesmaids’ dresses were neutral, and the understated color palette suited the simple, yet elegant scheme the couple was trying to achieve without sacrificing the glamour of their big day.
Yanni Design Studio transformed the banquet room at Hotel Arista into a complete fairy tale, retaining the same neutral color palette with white, ivory, light blush floral and greens, not to mention an extravagant floral wall to frame the couple’s sweetheart table. An assortment of hors d’oeuvres introduced a seasonal dinner of creamy cauliflower and asiago soup, an artisanal salad with poached pear, candied pecans and champagne vinaigrette, and a choice between airline chicken breast, beef tenderloin or roasted butternut squash for the main entrée. A classic white vanilla cake with raspberry filling and vanilla buttercream was delivered for dessert, and last but not least was an empanada and mac and cheese bar for late-night munching. DJ D. Jones kept the dance floor packed all night with some classics, ‘80s music and contemporary hits, all without resorting to the stereotypical wedding playlist, which was just one more detail that made the couple feel like a prince and princess for a day.

“It is important to splurge on your photographer and videographer. They capture all the moments throughout the day, and there is nothing better than to be able to relive the day over and over from watching the video and scrolling through photos. Plus, you only get one chance to get those special moments captured. Hire the professionals you know do great work.”
On their first date in downtown Chicago, Lauren and Jason realized they were practically neighbors, so for their big day, it was important to find the perfect venue to showcase their beloved city. They searched all over until they came upon the Chicago History Museum. The bride immediately envisioned their first dance ensconced underneath a chandelier on the black and white marble checkered floor, and knew it was the one. The views of Lincoln Park and the Gold Coast skyline not only let guests absorb the surrounding foliage and cityscape, but the brick façade and classic architecture also crafted the ideal setting for photography. Life in Bloom ushered the lush beauty of the outdoors inside with tablescapes featuring elevated greenery and accents of gold.
The bride wore a traditional bridal gown with intricate lace detail. The bridesmaids wore soft blush pastels and the groomsmen provided contrast in sharp black tuxes. There were sentimental touches throughout, including a locket holding Lauren’s late grandparents’ wedding picture tied around the bridal bouquet with lace from her grandmother's wedding dress, while her grandmother's lace handkerchief lie in her clutch. Guests enjoyed a sophisticated dinner of sirloin filet, grilled salmon, wild mushroom ravioli and three-layer ribbon-textured cakes decorated with fresh flowers. Late-night snacks of mini Chicago hot dogs, milkshakes and sliders rounded out the evening to play up the Chicago theme. After an evening of non-stop dancing, the happy couple was off to Fiji to make more memories.

“Take time to research vendors — if you pick solid and reliable vendors, it saves a lot of headaches in the long run. We had the best vendors, and cannot imagine the day and year of planning without all of them. Utilize websites and personal recommendations to pick those you feel a connection with, and that fit your vision and style.”
Sylvia and Sebastian have a lot of friends and family, so when Sebastian got down on one knee at the pumpkin patch to ask Sylvia’s hand in marriage, their goal was to make the 440-guest wedding intimate with a modern Italian vineyard theme. The groom picked up the bride in a classic Rolls Royce with a Venus et Fleur bouquet in hand. The bride wore a fully beaded Stephen Yearick gown with a detachable blush skirt overlay to the traditional church ceremony. Her bridesmaids wore Hera Couture nude satin strapless dresses with a paperbag waist (with pockets!), Sebastian wore a smart Armani tuxedo and his groomsmen wore black tuxes.
Yanni Design Studio set the scene with all white flowers and hanging green amaranthus, clear candelabras, clear Chiavari chairs and bursts of gold. In fact, when you walked into Alpine Banquets, almost everything was radiant in white. At the head table, Japanese cherry blossom trees held court and the white dance floor provided a heavenly backdrop. For appetizers, Nabuki catered sushi, amongst cold appetizers from Montrose Deli and Alpine Banquets. Cream of mushroom soup, beet spring salad with balsamic vinaigrette, and plated entrees of filet mignon and Mediterranean chicken greeted guests. For dessert, Alpine Banquets provided a large European sweet table and Oak Mill Bakery provided the cake. Because the couple envisioned a nonstop party, they splurged on a band and a DJ, and say the extra expense was worth every penny.

“The seating chart was the most stressful part. It is never too early to start planning with the moms where everyone is going to sit. Give yourself enough time to order the place cards!”
Daisy and Carina met in a Chicago Police Department locker room as fellow officers who frequently exchanged niceties during shift change. The rest, as they say, is history. DiNolfo’s Banquets, an elegant space that made their eyes light up, hosted their ceremony and reception. Divine Design & Events not only made the venue more breath-taking with tall flowers, a stage, intimate candles, a mirrored head table, a flower wall and more, but also created the ceremony setup, bouquets and boutonnieres. Daisy wore a lace wedding dress by Martina Liana and Carina wore brown Louboutin shoes topped with a light burgundy suit customized by The Dapper Club, which also customized blue suits for the bridal party. The rest of the bridal party bought dresses in blush pinks and blues from David’s Bridal. For a romantic twist, Carina enlisted the help of a bridesmaid and local artist to write a song just for Daisy that encapsulated their love story to be sung during the wedding.
Dinner was a diverse offering of meats, sides, pastas and vegetarian dishes, which were enjoyed alongside a festive mariachi band performance. Proving police officers have a sense of humor, Daisy and Carina determined it was a must to have a donut table next to their table of sweets. Bjorn Cakes crafted a chic naked cake adorned in flowers, which was cut and packaged for guests to take home due to having so many sweets already available. Moreover, the couple ordered 275 assorted flavors of Nothing Bundt Cakes for favors to give guests another sweet gift they would truly enjoy.

“The most memorable moment was seeing my wife, Daisy, walk down the aisle as we were surrounded by all of our friends, coworkers and family members. The energy in that room was absolutely amazing; it was filled with happiness. She walked down the aisle to the song “I Choose You” by Ryann Darling as we both gazed into each other’s eyes, and cried tears of happiness and disbelief. At that very moment, we knew that our life was just about to get better than what it already was. We were about to become one forever.”
For Katie and Marco, it was love at first sight. In fairy tale fashion, the couple exchanged vows in a traditional Catholic ceremony at St. Christina Catholic Church surrounded by relatives and friends. The bride wore a dreamy mermaid silhouette wedding gown with a beaded lace bodice and tulle chapel train from Allure Bridals. The maid of honor wore a buttery version of the blush pink dresses the bridesmaids wore. The men (including the groom’s three brothers who all acted as his best men) sported classic black tuxedos with black bowties and suspenders, with the exception of the bridesman who had the distinction of a blush bowtie. The guests celebrated with a reception at Ravisloe Country Club, a lovely Spanish-style establishment with an airy, ivy-filled courtyard, vaulted ceilings, wrought iron lighting accents, and bursts of green and coral to contrast customary white. Rosemary’s Garden added pink and white peonies with roses, dusty miller and eucalyptus to the classic ensemble.
Beyond their traditional wedding cake, the couple hosted a candy bar with all their favorite candy and Katie crafted homemade wine charms for wedding favors; it was details like this that made the night special. Even the DJ received a set of instructions to match the mood of the evening — classical music and Italian opera during cocktail hour, Italian classics from the likes of Frank Sinatra during dinner and a mix of contemporary pop music after dinner. To complete the Italian vibe, the couple planned to honeymoon in Florence, Tuscany and Positano, Italy, after the wedding.

“Danielle from The Simply Elegant Group helped keep the events and our wedding party on track and running smoothly, and even helped with an emergency mother of the bride dress mishap. Annie and Tim got married at St. Edna Catholic Church, Tim’s childhood parish, by a priest who has ties to both families, and the reception was held at Cafe La Cave, the restaurant where Annie’s parents celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary 16 years ago. The bride was ravishing in a lace wedding gown with an asymmetrical illusion neckline; her bridal party wore pretty plum-colored dresses. From the invitation to the dog’s bow to the fruit on the cake, purple was incorporated throughout the day. Floral Harmony completed the look with artful floral arrangements of all shades of violet. Elizabeth Nord Photography captured amazing shots at Armand’s Pizzeria (where the couple had their first date) and around downtown Arlington Heights where the crew stumbled upon some romantic twinkle lights.
The reception was full of surprises, too. Guests signed Chicago Blackhawks jerseys in lieu of a guestbook. The food at Cafe la Cave wowed, but the deconstructed naked wedding cake (made by the bride’s aunt) was a highlight. Annie and her dad danced to Frank Sinatra’s “I’ve Got You Under my Skin,” a dance they had been unintentionally practicing for Annie’s entire life. Rendezvous Music set the tone for the whole evening. In fact, guests would have certainly stayed for another two hours if allowed. Late in the evening, Gene and Jude’s hotdogs and pizza also made a debut per Tim’s request.

“In addition to our wedding cake, all of the women on my side baked homemade cookies to put out as our sweets table. It meant so much to me that so many women rallied around to celebrate my marriage to Tim. I have never felt more loved or supported.”
Gordon proposed to Brittany with a series of letters that led her on a romantic scavenger hunt that reflected their relationship — from their first date to their favorite restaurant and finally, at the lakefront during sunset, Gordon asked Brittany to be his wife. From there on, it was all about personal touches and details. Before being showered with attention at their outdoor ceremony, the couple shared a magical moment savoring their first look and personal vows. The bridesmaids wore cabernet lux chiffon dresses from Dessy that varied in style and captured the fall ambiance, while the groomsmen matched in Men’s Wearhouse navy suits with wine-colored ties. Event Floral created navy and deep red bouquets, boutonnieres, centerpieces and arch adornments with pops of white and blush, and plenty of greenery.
After the ceremony, the party moved to the Pavilion at Orchard Ridge Farms, which perfectly fit the bill for the rustic venue the couple required, but with high ceilings, a hillside apple orchard and an onsite bridal suite to boot. It was the only venue they visited! Henrici’s, the exclusive caterer for the venue, served apple orchard chicken, smugglers shrimp, filet and portabella wellington, about all of which the guests raved. Dessert didn’t disappoint either, consisting of a three-tiered, semi-naked red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting and a vanilla bean cake with fresh strawberries. An eight-piece band from the couple’s hometown entertained; Gordon and Brittany even accompanied them with a tambourine and cow bell before an enchanting sparkler sendoff at the end of the night.

“It was an absolute dream fall wedding. The venue, the colors, the food … everything was truly amazing. Although the guest number made it a big wedding, it still felt so intimate. We added romantic elements, such as the lighting and gold accents, to make [the venue] not feel so big and airy.”
Jumoke and Nzube started talking at a party not knowing that later, on their wedding day, they would be greeting each of their 150 guests side by side. After a late August ceremony framed by a pergola amongst classic gardens, a violinist played Viva la Vida by Coldplay to walk the newly married couple out. The families wore traditional Nigerian Yoruba and Igbo outfits, the groom a blue tuxedo, the groomsmen black tuxes and the bridesmaids flowing chiffon and tulle dresses in ombre shades of lavender. The bride’s Sottero and Midgley A-line wedding dress stunned in ivory, while her reception dress from Nigerian designer April by Kunbi was radiant in gold.
The cocktail hour impressed with a variety of hors d'oeuvres and unlimited cocktails at the elegant Haley Mansion, which not only offered a labyrinth of rooms for guests to explore, but also provided an expert staff that created seamless transitions from ceremony to cocktail hour to dinner to dancing. The centerpieces were a dazzling mixture of floating candles paired with white and amethyst flowers. The food was memorable, from lobster served with a creamy potato base in a martini glass to chicken saltimbocca, all finished off with a purple ombre cake. The DJ matched the energy on the dance floor. Needless to say, the reception was a constant dance party until the last guest left.

RECEPTION
“It is easy to get stressed out during wedding planning. You can't please everyone. Be realistic about your plans and be organized; it makes a difference in the end. Self-care is a priority, too, because it is easy to put all your energy toward your day. Enjoy your day because it goes by so fast.”
High school sweethearts Dolores and Dominic wanted a big, traditional wedding that captured the autumnal beauty of Chicago. Much like summer turns to fall, the bride wore an elegant satin mermaid gown for the Catholic ceremony, but transitioned into a rose lace mermaid gown from Italy for the reception. The groomsmen wore navy blue tuxedos and the bridesmaids wore maroon off-the-shoulder, floor-length dresses. For further autumn inspiration, Lavish Wedding used ivory roses and peonies with bunia berries and dusty miller to perfect fall centerpieces and bouquets.
Dolores and Dominic chose the Odyssey for its mix of modernity and elegance in one venue, not to mention the convenience of being close to home and able to accommodate 300 guests. The Odyssey chefs outdid themselves with a plated dinner of filet mignon and pan-seared chicken. From the gold Chiavari chairs to the charming candy table and late-night pizza, the couple decided it was worth it to splurge on the extras at their reception. It was also important to showcase their culture by incorporating a Mariachi band and bilingual emcee. Their most memorable moment was their first dance to “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran, especially because the choreographer/emcee mixed it into a Bachata version, so it was another perfect foray into their culture. They followed up their big day with a honeymoon in Thailand.

“Looking back on our wedding, we couldn't live without our wedding planner, Tammy [from Behind the Veil Design Studio]. She was available to us day and night, and was just a phone call or text away. Once we started working with her, everything fell in line — from dates we needed vendors locked in down to what everyone's role was the day of. During our wedding, any vendor- or guest-related question went straight to Tammy so we could enjoy our moment.”
