Getting Here & Getting Around

TRAVEL, THE BETTER WAY

Getting Here

BY CAR: Drivers can get to the Stevens Point Area via two major highways: Highway 10 (east-west) and Interstate 39 (north-south).

BY PLANE: Central Wisconsin Airport, out of Mosinee, is just 15 minutes north of Stevens Point. Service is available from major domestic airlines, with connections through Chicago and Minneapolis. Car rentals are available directly at the airport, though reservations are recommended.

BY BUS: Ground transportation is available through Lamers, with northbound and southbound stops in Stevens Point daily. The bus offers connections to Wausau, Waupaca, Appleton, Oshkosh, Fond du Lac, and Milwaukee. Coach USA/Van Galder runs daily to and from Madison with multiple stops along the northbound and southbound route.

Getting Around

It is easy to get around the Stevens Point Area by car, by bike, or on foot. Public transportation is available through Stevens Point Transit, with most of the urban area included. The normal bus fare is only $1.25 and late-night routes are available. Taxi service and ride-sharing are also available.

On clear nights, the observatory offers a close-up view of the night sky. Regardless of weather and atmospheric conditions, the planetarium offers a better understanding of our universe.

More than half of the campus is devoted to the 280-acre Schmeeckle Reserve, a great spot to explore nature. The reserve offers five miles of trails, a visitor center, and the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame.

WHERE’S THE BEST PLACE TO GRAB A BITE ON A BUDGET? SP: “My favorite place to grab a snack and coffee would either be Basement Brewhaus or Zest Bakery, which is just off campus.”

Visiting campus can work up an appetite. In the Dreyfus University Center, check out Basement Brewhaus, which doubles as a coffee shop and bar, with an array of coffee drinks, beer, and wine. For a meal on wheels, check out Stevie’s Food Truck! Most commonly found at Point Brewery, it has a rotating menu that serves snacks, beverages, or even full-course meals.

WHAT EVENT DO YOU LOOK FORWARD TO EVERY YEAR? SP: “The World’s Largest Trivia Contest is a fun, unique event!”

Each year, there is an event that seeks to challenge the minds and endurance of all who dare to play. Hosted by 90FM, UW-Stevens Point’s student-run radio station, the

World’s Largest Trivia Contest is a 54-hour competition, taking place every April, that keeps players searching for answers.

Or check out local trivia nights at Guu’s on Main, Graffiti’s Sports Pub, District 1 Brewing Company, and more!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE HIDDEN GEM ON CAMPUS? SP: “The awesome art exhibitions at the Edna Carlsten Art Gallery!”

When school is in session, stroll through rotating exhibits at the Edna Carlsten Art Gallery within the Noel Fine Arts Center, with work by students and other community artists. Keep enjoying the arts on campus — from music to theater and dance — in Jenkins Theatre or Michelsen Hall throughout the year.

UW-Stevens Point is also home to “E Pluribus Unum,” a massive mural made with over 200,000 individual tiles, on the Trainer Natural Resources Building.

Another public memorial mural, “The Ancestors Buried Below Us,” by Christopher Sweet, features words and imagery to recognize where Native Americans from Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi were buried on campus grounds before UWStevens Point was established.

Want an adventure instead? Check out PaddleQuest, a paddling-based challenge that provides new obstacles around every corner. Geared to all skill levels and ages, the event blends canoeing and Comic-Con with a side of conservation.

Potatoes grown in the region (known as the golden sands) are not just your ordinary spuds. At the Almond Tater Toot held in July, potatoes, in all their varieties, are the honored guests of the celebration parade.

Get your motor running to attend the Midwest’s largest car show, the Iola Car 18

Show, hosted in July. For more equipment, don’t miss the Rosholt Thresheree featuring antique machinery.

In the fall, get in the spirit of the season with Point Brewery’s Pointoberfest, complete with lederhosen and pints. Just before the festivities begin, the event kicks off with the Blubber Run, a 5K fun run that starts at the brewery.

Travel along the nooks and crannies of the Ice Age Trail as it weaves its way through central Wisconsin for the Hidden Studios Art Tour. This event features the studios of working artists who open their doors for the public each fall.

See history come alive with Heritage Days at the history museum known as Heritage Park, one of four historical sites in the Stevens Point region.

A seven-minute drive from downtown Amherst, Nelsonville is a small but mighty village nestled along the Tomorrow River.

Whether you’re an angler or a paddler, the Tomorrow River is a narrow and intimate stream that features crystal-clear water, a nice current, a couple of boulders to dodge, and a sense of solitude. HIDDEN ART Don’t miss the opportunity to capture local art. Along Riverfront Trail, find unique light poles, which were turned into sculptures, that celebrate the character of the area. Tucked under the County Road HH bridge, where the Westside Loop breaks off to cross the Wisconsin River, you’ll find a mural of CubanAmerican-French writer Anais Nin. Not quite as hidden is the To the Point sculpture, a large metal piece designed by local artist Boleslaw Kochanowski that welcomes people to town.

The Stevens Point Area offers some exceptionally diverse fishing for multiple freshwater species. Running along downtown Stevens Point, the Wisconsin River provides fantastic fishing for walleye, smallmouth bass and musky. Mix in good populations of bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, northern pike, and sturgeon, and you find yourself in an angler’s paradise.

The Stevens Point stretch of the Wisconsin River flows roughly 12 miles and can be broken into three major sections. The upstream portion, from the Lake DuBay Dam downstream to the Highway 10 bridge, provides classic river fishing focused mostly on current, rock, and shoreline wood.

As you head south from the Highway 10 bridge, the river deltas into numerous secondary channels, creating a maze of islands that allows anglers to fish almost any imaginable way, while feeling like they are in a pristine wilderness area far from civilization. All these channels eventually flow into the lower basin of the Stevens Point Flowage, which looks and fishes more like a natural lake. Much of this area is surrounded by city parks and provides excellent shorefishing opportunities.

The Wisconsin River is not the only hotspot in the area. Other nearby waters that provide great fishing and boating opportunities 30

include Lake DuBay, Biron Flowage, McDill Pond, Plover River, and Tomorrow River. All these waters are located only a few minutes from downtown Stevens Point and provide anglers with the opportunity to chase everything from brook trout to musky!

GREEN CIRCLE TRAIL The popular 27-mile Green Circle Trail offers 12 segments to explore yearround. With plenty of paths to choose, linking scenic natural areas, along the Wisconsin and Plover rivers, through towering cathedral canopies, parks and wetlands — here are a few suggestions to start.

LAKE EMILY TO CUSTER ROAD Length: 10.2 miles Surface: Crushed limestone Activities: Hiking, biking, snowmobiling, horseback riding, pets Parking: Lake Emily County Park, Amherst Junction Start at Lake Emily to explore the 5.1-mile, one-way section of this popular crushed limestone trail, then head west toward the trailhead at Custer Rd. Along the way, enjoy serene country views. Passes are required.

SCHMEECKLE RESERVE – Lake Loop Trail Length: 1 mile Surface: Crushed granite Activities: Hiking, jogging, biking Parking: Maria Dr. (south) and Schmeeckle Reserve Visitor Center (north)

The Lake Loop Trail is an easy one-mile trail, which loops around Lake Joanis within Schmeeckle Reserve.

The trail is handicap accessible, with benches and an accessible fishing pier.

The scenic Plover River Trail spans from Hwy. 66 (north) to Hofmeister Dr. (south). The towering trees, flowing water, and ample wildlife — and not a single road crossing — make this trail a favorite.

STANDING ROCKS PARK Length: Varies Surface: Natural Activities: Hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, pets Parking: 7695 Standing Rocks Rd., Stevens Point Boulders and gorgeous — but challenging — hills are common sights here, known as one of the best spots for mountain biking trails in Wisconsin. But don’t stop there!

The park offers plenty of other options, including hiking, snowshoeing, downhill skiing, and a dog park.

STEINHAUGEN RECREATION AREA Length: 4.3 miles Surface: Natural Activities: Hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, pets Parking: 3485 Bentley Rd., Custer Steinhaugen Recreation Area has 270 acres to explore, featuring a diverse mix of wetlands, upland hardwood forests, pines, and open fields, for silent sports throughout the year.

TOMORROW RIVER STATE TRAIL Length: 29 miles Surface: Crushed stone Activities: Hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, horseback riding, pets Parking: Twin Towers Rd., Cate Park, Hwy. 49 Don’t overlook this expansive rails-to-trails option.

Tomorrow River State Trail spans 29 miles as it cuts through the rural landscape in central Wisconsin. It is open all year-round to outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy everything from biking to horseback riding.

One Hour: Arm yourself with a local birding guide and a pair of binoculars before heading over to the Godfrey & Maybelle Erickson Natural Area.

Skating rinks can be found throughout the area (weather permitting), including the rink in downtown Stevens Point.

Beginners can check out K.B. Willett Ice Arena for open skating times and rentals.

One Day: Head out to Standing Rocks Park for snowshoeing, fat-tire biking, and downhill or cross-country skiing.

Start near Behnke Olson Outdoor Recreation Center and hit the trails — including a lighted loop.

One Hour: Cast a line in the Wisconsin River, from expansive Lake DuBay to the backwaters and sloughs full of musky, channel catfish, northern pike, and panfish. No boat? FALL One Hour: Get in the saddle and try horseback riding in Wisconsin. Trail rides are amazing on the 90-acre Wild West Campground & Corral in eastern Portage County.

Antique Finds

Uncover history through antiquing in the Stevens Point Area, where vintage finds tell the story of local brewing, farming, and outdoor traditions that shaped the region.

The area’s rich history is alive in attractions like the Rising Star Mill in Nelsonville, which dates back to 1855, or the Beth Israel Synagogue in Stevens Point, established in 1905. Other places to check out include Plover’s Heritage Park, which explores Portage County’s history with restored buildings from the past, and the Historic Firehouse No. 2 Museum, which preserves the firefighting history of Stevens Point.

Step through the doors of a local vintage consignment or antique store in the Stevens Point Area and, chances are, you’ll also find an item rooted in local history. While the stock is never guaranteed in this setting, the following pieces are common finds.

The influence of Wisconsin’s beer culture is apparent at most antique stores, where you’ll find wooden crates, bottles, and faded vintage cans that were once used to haul, store, and drink locally brewed beer. According to the Wisconsin Historical Society, by the 1890s, nearly every community had at least one brewery. When Prohibition changed the landscape, many of the breweries went out of business and, locally, only Stevens Point Brewery survived.

Driving through the Stevens Point Area, agriculture is on full display with fields, barns, and livestock dictating the rural landscape.

Influenced by Wisconsin’s farming roots, you’ll commonly see agricultural nods in antique stores — from wagon wheels and hay bale hooks to milk cans and vintage potato planters.

For more context about agricultural history, don’t miss the exhibit at Heritage Park.

In one of Stevens Point’s oldest parks, Iverson Park, there was once a 40-foot-high ski jump built in the 1930s, near where the toboggan runs stand now. The love for the outdoors runs deep in Wisconsin, which should be no surprise in a state that values natural resources.
