SCpE students of the Mariano Marcos State University secured places in all CPE Challenge categories in the just concluded 5th ICpEP Regional Convention, November 25-27 via zoom.

The contestants who represented MMSU were chosen by the Computer Engineering Faculty Department.

Winners of the said competition are: Angelito Andres Jr., Champion-C Programming; Keith Angelo Tumaneng, Champion-Python Programming; Clyde Jolo Abinsay, 1st Runner up-Java Programming; Walter Galicinao, 1st Runner Up-C++ Programming; Reynaldo Salvador Jr, Brizen Agsalog, Clifford Tugas, 2nd Runner Up-Pitch Competition; Janel Ruth Alfonso, Neil Bryant Baliao, Leah Antonette Mercado, 2nd Runner Up-Quizbowl; Marc Louie Pasion, Arlan Brent Quimoyog, John Kirlee Corpuz, Arnold Nicolas Jr., Yuri Borcena, 2nd Runner Up-Mobile Legends Tournament.

The said convention also conducted webinars about Integrating Data Analytics in Design Project and Practical Hands-on Training Skills on Ethical Hacking.

Moreover, 9 colleges and universities from Region 1 attended the event.

by ICpEP.se officers Chalsea Rhea Abrojena and Neil Bryant Baliao, respectively during the 2021 ICpEP Regional Re-Organization held last November 23 via Zoom.

The re-organization was a prequel to the annual 3-day Regional CPE convention that was held from November 25-27.

he Department of Computer Engineering end its academic year on a high note as both of its entries garnered top five finishes during the 2022 Research Colloquium held today at the College of Engineering.

The first entry featured the study titled “Web-Based Interactive 360-Degrees Virtual Tour of the College of Engineering”, in which the team secured 2nd place. The members of the research team include: Mark Adrian Aguho, John Karlo Arellano, Alan Neale J. Bacay II, Marvin R. Domingo, Walter A. Galicinao, Kyle Christian E.

Izon, Leonard Vince L. Pastor, and Gilbert C. Rayoan, with Engr. Christian M. Libungan as their adviser.

For the second entry, the group presented the research, “Small-scale Poultry System Using the Internet of Things (IOT) Platform”, a study that earned them the final spot in the top five. The members of the research team are the following: Christian Angelo Corpuz, Christian Jaylord Calzada, Phillip Joshua Lagadon, Jack Mahor, John Arvin Riñen, and Novelyn Salazar. Their adviser is Engr.

he newly-elected officers of the Institute of Computer Engineers of the Philippines Student Edition (ICpEP.se) officially took their oath of office during the COE Induction Program headed by the COE Student Council which was held virtually on Zoom last October 6, 2021.

The program was held to recognize the different officers of the various COE student organizations and for them to publicly commit to the responsibilities and obligations associated with their respective institutions.

Engr. Mary Grace Matias, the organization’s new adviser, introduced the new set of ICpEP.se officers during the said induction, with newly-appointed President Chalsea Rhea Abrojena at the helm.

Dr. Elizabeth Marfel T. Gagni, the Office of the Student Affairs and Services Director, was the inducting officer during the program.

The rest of the officers of ICpEP.se include the following: Neil Bryant Baliao (VP Internal), Christian Rick Asuncion (VP External), Leah Antonette Mercado (Secretary), Klevin Dale Oania (Sub-Secretary), Rhone Mhea Joy Agtang (Treasurer), Alecx Samantha Franco (Sub-Treasurer), Kimberly Caluya (Auditor), Adrian Adamana (Business Manager), Arwin Viernes (PIO), Ljan Ross Butin (Male Athletic Manager), Staycy Khaye Rodrigo (Female Athletic Manager), Jhude Zedrick Pedronan (Male Peace Officer), Jocelyn Jimenez (Female Peace Officer), Jaylord Laed (Escort), and Princess Flores (Muse).

The officers were nominated during the ICpEP.se Reorganization held virtually last September 23, 2021 and were deemed the winners the day afterwards.

WHATS ALL THE HYPE ABOUT THIS BLOCKCHAIN?

S

ince the 90s the idea of blockchain technology was just around the block. People wanted to implement a system wherein document timestamps could not be tampered with.

It is a digital ledger consisting of records called blocks that is used to record transactions across many computers so that any involved block cannot be altered retroactively, without the alteration of all subsequent blocks. So how secure is the blockchain? Imagine computers all around the world are a part of this decentralized network and a person tried to forge a transaction he then has to alter every block next to it on not one but all the computers that is connected to this decentralized network. Yes friend those computers im referring to are the ones who are mining crypto. Mining is the act of verifying transactions in the blockchain.

Crypto is another topic. Bitcoin is not blockchain but bitcoin and every single digital token rely and operate on blockchain technology. They are type of currency just like money. You can also make money (or lose money ) from it.

But i cannot say it is a strategic investment but more of an optimistic gamble.

The value of crypto depends on their utility or specific use. Just like bitcoin, a long time ago it was just intended for the purpose of faster payment transactions.

Now if you bought a hundred when it was on its early phase i think you wont need to work ever in your life now.

Now you might be wondering what makes crypto gain value. I'm not fully knowledgeable of these but from my past economic classes taught me about supply and demand. The amount of crypto available in the blockchain is limited. I assume you have observed in our economy, when something is scarce, prices go up as demand is high.

NFTs also operate in blockchain technology. What are NFTs? They are basically digital assets like cryptocurrency. They can be digital pieces/collections of art, music, images, and other weird things mostly digital JPEGs but buying them wont gain you the rights to it just the JPEG. Weird right? Most people are happy with this ideas especially the craftsman who doesnt get the spotlight.

Although as of now the NFT market is full of bs. People buy NFT just for the money they could potentially gain as these are similar with what I told you about scarcity, well digital scarcity.

A lot of people can't still fully wrap their heads with these technological innovations. Perhaps if we could also use it for the upcoming national election.

I personally like the idea. as a closing message we must at least know the idea, principle and function behind these new technologies. In the future every firm, or company might require you a basic understanding to it just like our knowledge about computers as it is an essential development in the era we live in today.

TITLE RIGHTS

o be called “Professional” and carry your title in your field of work, you must pass a board or licensure exam administered by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). A PRC ID, also called the professional identification card (PIC), will then be given to certify that the holder is a registered professional with legal authority to practice their profession. Accordingly, the House Bill No. HB08743 or the CPE Bill should be passed to finally close the controversy of using the “Engr” title and to protect the profession as CpE Professionals.

The Institute of Computer Engineers of the Philippines (ICpEP) had been demanding to pass the bill for years but has been constantly blocked by other engineering organization. Moreover, the computer engineering curriculum has been released in 1990’s and since then, CpE graduates were facing backlashes for using the title before their names.

Two years ago, the #CpECertificationIsReal had been circulating online after Engr. Apag III, ICpEP national president at that time, announced that the petition for the ICpEP Certification Board has been approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) during the 7th National Convention in November 2019. This is to grant the Computer Engineering Certification Board (CpECB), a private institution, to conduct a board exam to certify Computer Engineers (CCpEs) and Professional Computer Engineers (PCpEs).

The approval of the petition by the SEC is a huge step to the approval of the House Bill No. HB08743: AN ACT PROVIDING FOR A MORE RESPONSIVE AND COMPREHENSIVE REGULATION FOR THE REGISTRATION, LICENSING AND PRACTICE OF PROFESSIONAL COMPUTER ENGINEERS, REGISTERED COMPUTER ENGINEERS, COMPUTER ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGISTS, AND COMPUTER TECHNICIANS introduced by Representative Rufus Rodriguez.

Approving the bill and letting PRC Board administer the licensure exams will not only protect the computer engineers but the array of professionals because the commission has the power and authority to impose protection and action on various cases in the professional world.

Currently, the bill is Pending with the Committee on CIVIL SERVICE AND PROFESSIONAL REGULATION since 202102-22. There is just no valid reason to why the congress should not pass the bill. Refusing to pass the bill is an unacceptable act because they are refusing to admit that computer engineers face struggles on their professional growth. No profession shall be discriminated because everyone is trying to contribute to the betterment of the society by utilizing their field of expertise.

arami ang naapektuhan ang pamumuhay dulot ng pandemya, isa na dito ang pag-aaral ng mga estudyante, maging elementarya man, hayskul o kolehiyo. kailangan ang pag aaral para sa magandang kinabukasan, kaya’t ipinagpapatuloy ang pag-aaral ‘online’ kahit na ito ay bago at mahirap para sa karamihan. Dahil sa pagpapatuloy ng ‘online classes,’ maraming nagbago sa mga gawing kaganapan ng mga mag-aaral habang sila ay nasa klase. Narito ang mga ilan sa mga iba’t ibang online ganap sa online classes: Online Bulungan - online na paraan upang makipag usap sa mga kaibigan o kaklase habang nasa klase.

Recitation Syndrome - Kadalasang sakit ng mga estudyante, nahahawa na rin ang kanilang internet kaya palaging disconnected at hindi nakakasali sa recitation.

The Internet Explorer - Ito ang mga estudyanteng napuntahan na ang iba’t ibang sulok ng kanilang bahay upang makasagap ng magandang signal para makasali sa klase.

f WHAT’S THE GREATEST LESSON ONLINE CLASS HAS TAUGHT YOU? Ricka Sarah Gumarang As someone who has always struggled with time management, online class has forced me to step out of my comfort zone and really learn how to manage my time well. Especially that I belong in a household wherein I do certain chores like cleaning, cooking, and whatnot. The beginning was hard, as it always is, but after sometime it gets better.

Online class has opened my eyes on the reality of our education system. More often than not, it reveals its flawed and anti-poor nature. Factors like lack of equipment, poor internet connectivity, and non-conducive environments are often neglected, hence, creating a great gap between students with various social standings.

Ilan lamang ang mga ito sa dumaraming ‘variant’ ng online ganap. Mahirap man ang sitwasyon at maraming pagbabago sa pag-aaral, hinding-hindi pa rin mawawala ang mga ala-alang nabubuo sa klase na tiyak pagkukwentuhan pagdating ng panahon. Sa kabila ng malaking pagsubok na dulot ng pandemya, pinapatunayan ng mga mag-aaral na sila ay determinadong ipagpatuloy ang pag-aaral upang matuto at abutin ang kanilang mga pangarap sa buhay.

The greatest lesson online class has taught me is that one has the opportunity to choose his pacing which is important in developing good work ethics.

Charles Philip Edra During the traditional classroom setup, I always taught I couldn’t maximize my time because I am busy. Now, I have realized that college should be the starting point towards my chosen career and online class have made me do it. Due to the presence of asynchronous classes, I was able to entertain clients who need laptop and cellphone assistance/repair.

In a nutshell, do not only focus on the academe but look outside the box, exercise your capabilities, and grow.

teve is a visionary. I am a visionary.

I have ambitious and ambiguous goals. I have dreams that can only be achieved in my sleep. I have ideas that defies the law of physics. My ideas are as rare as Astatine.

Jobs’ success started in a garage. Mine started on a Samsung Core i3 laptop from 2013 when my little sister was about to turn 1 year old, and I presented myself to design her birthday tarpaulin banner. It was the earlier version of Photoshop and I would go to my Tita’s house to learn how to use the tools and other than that, I figured everything else myself. That ambitious Neil from 2013 is so proud of what he is now. Just like Steve, his ambition and interest made his vision came to life.

When I was on tenth grade, I was the layout artist of the Collaborative Desktop Publishing competition on Campus Journalism. We lost. It was not fair. After the awarding ceremony, I told my coach that I will abort my plan to study at SLC for Senior High School and I will return the next year and I will make history: To win the first ever Collaborative Desktop Publishing Filipino Champion Award for Candon National High School. And I did. I trained so hard

for that. And the next year again, I made another history for my school. We were the first ever team to win a place in the Regional Schools Press Conference in Collaborative Desktop Publishing in Candon City Division. This part of my life was reminded when the documentary film about Steve I was watching showed how dedicated Jobs is in making his vision the reality. He worked like a dog that even his employees resigned because they cannot meet Jobs’ demand.

Jobs did not sleep; I barely even sleep.

The dramatic part of the documentary was when he was sick and losing weight, getting skinny but still conducting keynote events. You can really tell that he knows his purpose and loves what he is doing. When I was also on my lowest part of my life, I did not stop. There are countless times that I would cry in front of my computer because of frustration, trauma, anxieties, depression. And I would wipe my tears with my exhausted hand and get those deadlines and revisions done.

In a speech that Steve gave at Standford University Graduation, he quoted a part of a book that he loves “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish”. Also, in an essay I submitted at Cut Print Podcast

The greatest lesson Online Class taught me is the importance of having a mental, emotional, social, and financial support system. This online mode of learning created spectrum of predicaments, and each of us has our own ways and paces on handling them. Hence, what we need to do is to be compassionate; to help others on their struggles; and to not be hesitant on seeking aid from other people. Simply, I learned to establish an empathetic society wherein it’s a must to have a support system and to become a support system.

John Mark Villanueva The greatest lesson online class has taught me is that it is not as efficient as face-to-face classes. For me, it is more difficult and less engaging. It is not even convenient and accessible for some students. Knowledge can be obtained through online classes but skills, which are vital to different courses and careers, is hard to be acquired in an online learning setup.

Czerizha Kaizel S. Adzuara Personally, the sudden shift to a virtual setup in my education had been difficult for me despite my privileges. However, online class has taught me to be more compassionate. As a student leader, I can attest that it is more difficult to lend a helping hand through a mere screen. But our limited reach should not stop us from empathizing and uplifting our fellow constituents.

Network that the network head loved and shared in her social media I said, “Ignorance is only shameful when you refuse to cure it”. That part of the documentary made me realize that we truly are very alike in mindset and attitude.

My story may not be as dramatic as Jobs’ when he got ousted in his own company and starting another

company on his own or being an adopted child or dropping out of college or having a deadly disease, I still like to believe that someday, even if I am old and weary, I will still be doing the things that make me powerful, things that remind me that I am successful just like Steve Jobs.

he thrill of the chase always starts with the seeker. With the golden snitch flying around the glorious field and the people cheering from the stands, the seeker, who is considered as the most important role in the Quidditch game, has the ability to catch the snitch and ultimately win the match. However, to a boy named Christian, a seeker is more than that. It can fall, feel pressured, get punched, and be swayed by the constant appearance of life problems. The reality of life doesn’t conform with the happenings in the wizarding world of Harry Potter, but to Christian, there is a line of connection. And his story coincides with that line.

It started when he entered high school at Sanchez Mira School of Arts and Trades. As a young and innocent individual, having a dream was a primary goal in his life. He insisted on making his life more colorful, but within the boundaries of his capabilities, he couldn’t actively participate in the major activities in high school. The thought must have troubled his mind. Still, he persevered. After a series of dripping sweat and tears, he finally found his passion. It dwelled at the codes and figures behind the screen of his computer.

This continued when he stepped into college. After choosing computer engineering as his course, he did his best to reach and maintain good grades, but it was not an easy task. With stressful activities rapidly appearing and INC getting into his report card, he thought that maybe, he was not capable after all. He had numerous mental breakdowns in his college life. He was suffering from what people called “the college curse” until an opportunity presented itself.

It was a decent call from his point of view. After he graduated from college, his former teacher contacted him, telling him to apply as an instructor at their department. At first, he thought that he was not fit for the job, considering the fact that he struggled during his college days and did not receive awards such as graduating with a Latin honor. He considered applying to the IT department in Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital, but after thinking about his passion and the practicality of his decisions, he ended up accepting the job his former teacher recommended.

The start of the chase has finally started. As a budding educator at the age of 23, he considered the opportunity as a blessing from above. To him, getting a job at a young age was only a fraction of the opportunities that were about to come. For now, paying attention to his present reality is a must. Understanding his students, getting enough work experience, setting goals, and enjoying life to the fullest are the things he needs to prioritize.

It is indeed only the beginning. There are many more things to unravel.

neglected through the years will inevitably emerge from the ever-growing perspective of a seeker. For the boy who has fallen a hundred times in the past, it is surely a challenge to rise again. But now, with the golden snitch flying at the glorious field of opportunities, he will not hesitate to chase the pot of gold. And maybe in the future, if he can catch it with great effort, he will stand in front of the people and he will listen to the echo of his name, the best that has ever played the game, the seeker named Christian M. Libungan.

t was a typical night free from the vigorous gleam of the radiant sun. Heaps of bird go singing jubilantly as the wind suavely cuddles on every branch of the trees it passes by. The serene night was at peace and amity.

I was stuck on my table with my attention glued on my laptop. I was doing an article about this amusing woman whom I consider a warrior. A dauntless warrior armored with perseverance and dedication – fighting with grace in this tough battlefield called life.

Her battle started when she entered high school at Talugtog Solsona National High School. At her young and innocent age, she was able to flaunt her willingness to learn as she shone out the brightest in her class. Her strides went beyond her horizon and became the

Valedictorian during her high school journey.

Her battlefield went wider and tougher, so with her fortitude and courage. She attended college at Mariano Marcos State University and took up the course Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. Her battle was not easy, she went through ups and downs like other college students experienced. But fascinatingly, she never kept her courage down. Afterall, she was a warrior. Life continuously tested and bombarded her perseverance and she never fail to solve them with the help of her ever-supportive family and friends. And all the trials and travails paid off for she ended her college degree with flying colours and graduated Cum Laude.

Sa kanyang balong ito na bukal ang nagbibigay ng tubig mula sa kanyang matamis na agos na siyang nagsilbing salukan ng mga dunong at tagahulma ng mga kabataang may pira-pirasong pangarap at kaalaman.

Makapal ang kanyang itim na itim na buhok gayon din ang kanyang mga kilay, mapupungay ang kanyang mga bilugan mata, hindi kalakihan ang bulto ng pangangatawan at katamtaman ang tangkad niya. Sa kabuuan, masasabing hindi rin papahuli sa ibang kalalakihan kung itsura ang pag-uusapan.

At the age of 23, she is now a budding college instructor at Mariano Marcos State University, where she considers her home. At first glance you wouldn’t thought that she’s an instructor ‘cause her height and body build couldn’t tell. Her expressive well-rounded eyes covered with her eyeglasses, angelic face and her petite body would tell that she’s still a student but that never hinders her to do her job admirably as an instructor. Her students describe her as an approachable and understanding instructor who is flexible on every possible situation that may occur. But on one turn she is strict and stern towards cheating students. She considers her age as a great asset to help her teaching profession. At a young age, she can easily

meet. Sa unang tingin, naisip ko na isa siya sa mga bago naming kaklase sa kadahilanang hindi kalakihan ang kanyang pangangatawan at baby-face pa, ngunit laking gulat ko nang nalaman kong siya pala ang aming instruktor sa IT 11.

Sa bawat pagsambit niya ng mga kataga para sa aming leksyon, ramdam ko ang kanyang umaapaw na simbuyo ng determinansyon at pagmamahal sa kanyang propesyon. Dahil sa labis-labis na determinasyon at kabutihan ng loob, napili ng kanyang puso ang magturo at maipamahagi ang kanyang nalalaman sa kompyuter at teknolohiya. Pinili niya ang kanyang propesyon hindi dahil sa salapi na kanyang makukuha kundi dahil sa kagustuhan ng kanyang pusong makatulong sa mga kabataang uhaw sa kaalaman hinggil sa teknolohiya. Sa usapang pakikisalamuha naman, students-friendly kung siya ay ilarawan ng mga estudyante dahil hindi siya mahirap pakisamahan at lagi ring handa sa mga tanong at hinaing ng mga mag-aaral. Hindi siya nagkulang sa mga impormasyon na kanyang itinuturo at labis din ang kanyang pagpapaalala sa kanyang mga estudyante sa mga outputs na kailangan ipasa. Kaakibat nito ay ang kanyang pilosopiya sa pagtuturo na ginagawa niya ang kanyang tungkulin sa pagtuturo hindi para sa kanyang sariling kapakanan kundi para sa bawat estudyente nang sila ay matuto at makatulong din sa iba.

Nang makapagtapos sa kolehiyo, siya ay nakipag sapalaran sa Maynila at doon mas nahubog lalo ang kanyang kakayahan at pagmamahal sa kanyang ginagawa. Siya ay naging developer at programmer sa loob ng limang taon sa isang sikat na software company na Computer Professionals Incorporated o CPI na matatagpuan sa San Juan, Metro Manila. Doon mas nakilala niya ang kanyang sarili. At dahil sa kagustuhang makatulong sa iba lalong-lalo na sa kanyang Alma Mater ay napili niyang bumalik at magturo.

Inaasam-asam kong makilala pa siya ng lubusan ng walang screen o monitor ng laptop na nakaharang. Nais kong makinig sa kanyang pagtuturo ng harap-harapan at hindi sa google meet lamang. Ang maestro na aking tinutukoy ay walang iba kundi si Sir Engelbert E. Carino, mas kilala sa tawag na “Sir Engel”, isa sa mga bagong instraktor ng Department of Computer Engineering sa Mariano Marcos State University. Siya ay may edad na 26 na nagmula sa Barangay 16 Quiling Norte, Batac City. Siya ay nag-aral noong sekondarya sa Laboratory High School Batac Campus at nakapagtapos ng Bachelor of Computer Engineering sa Mariano Mariano Marcos State University noong 2016.

Ito’y isinasagawa hindi dahil sa kislap ng anumang pera kundi dahil sa kakaibang kayamanang ginto kung ihalintulad. Ang pagiging isang huwarang guro ay hindi nababase sa haba ng iyong taon sa iyong propesyon kundi sa kung paano ka naging haligi sa bawat mag-aaral na iyong tinuturuan. Forever engraved in her students’ minds is her image walking life’s runway with confidence and grace. Her strides reflect commitment and confidence, and her upper body features long arms and hands outstretched in kindness and generosity. She has worn cloths crafted by “courage and integrity,” “dedication under adversity,” and “trust in God.” She highlights the value of teaching, as well as the beauty of living a life of faith and prayer. Her battle is not yet done but she for sure could win it. She is indeed a warrior. A graceful warrior named Mary Grace Domingo Matias.

CPE THESES 2022 USED FACEMASK SANITIZER AND SHREDDER DISPOSING MACHINE

he looming threat brought upon by the pandemic has led to the mass production of personal protective equipment; one of which is the facemask.

While the facemask protects the person from catching the COVID-19 virus, disposing it improperly after use can affect everyone's health and safety. This is why several students from the computer engineering department of the Mariano Marcos State University have developed a sanitizer for used facemask, and a shredder disposing machine to help in providing an adequate disposal management for this PPE. This research was co-written by [insert names] The machine uses different sensors to detect the hand of the user,

as well as the weight of cut-up facemasks once they were put inside a sealed container. In addition, UV lights were present inside which act as disinfectants for the used facemasks. The machine was proven to be effective, responsive, and user-friendly.

WEB-BASED INTERACTIVE 360° VIRTUAL TOUR OF THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

he COVID-19 pandemic has caused schools to close its gates and forced to conduct academic activities online.

This is unfortunate for freshmen for they cannot fully experience the college experience. Worry not! for a group of researchers created an online kiosk virtual tour that will help students, families, visitors, prospective students, and accreditors familiarize and learn more virtually about the College of Engineering building at Mariano Marcos State University. The Web-Based 360° Virtual Tour was developed using different software and hardware resources. The system was built using the software Pano2VR, PTGui, Hugin, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, MySQL, XAMPP, Apache HTTP Server, Visual Studio Code, and the Windows 10 Kiosk Wizard. Pano2VR was the main software used to create the virtual tour and was used to create the graphic user interface and add other clickable and interactable elements. Mark Adrian P. Aguho, John Karlo M. Arellano, Alan Neale J. Bacay II, Marvin R. Domingo, Walter A. Galicinao, Kyle Christian E. Izon, Leonard Vince L. Pastor, and Gilbert C. Rayoan are the researchers behind this amazing project.

DEVELOPMENT OF CONTACTLESS ENTRY SYSTEM WITH FACEMASK DETECTION USING TENSOR FLOW (API) APPLICATION PROGRAM INTERFACE

ompared to its first encounter, when it had substantial challenges, the entire world is now adjusting to this Novel Corona Virus, also known as COVID-19. COVID defense materials have been developed, vaccines have been generated, and various processes have been painstakingly followed. It does, however, have issues that must be resolved. Computer engineering students from Mariano Marcos State University with names of Clyde Jolo R. Abinsay, Brizen E. Agsalog, Maverick Dave Aguinaldo, Earl John M. Bumanglag, John Christopher T.

Dela Fuente, Jomel M. Estavillo, Reynaldo Jr. Q. Salvador, Clifford A. Tugas, Keith Angelo A. Tumaneng, and Jenno A. Vea made a thesis study that was intended to design a kiosk contactless entry system for students to minimize manual form completion and trace potential COVID-19 carriers. Facemask detection, RFID scanning, QR code scanning, and temperature scanning were all included in the system. The findings of this study are highly significant and beneficial to employees and students of Mariano Marcos State University, visitors, and researchers.

SMALL-SCALE SMART POULTRY SYSTEM USING THE INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT) PLATFORM

T

he Philippines has well-attained self-sufficiency in poultry, a prolific producer of poultry products.

Nonetheless, the incessant upsurge in human population greatly affects the poultry industry and livestocks farming because of the demand for supply which serves as one of the food resources. Furthermore, poultry farming requires excessive workloads and human labor. Henceforth, computer engineering students from Mariano Marcos State University constructed a thesis study with concern to the said matter. The researchers were Christian Jaylord A. Calzada, Christian Angelo C. Corpuz, Phillip Joshua G. Lagadon, Jack B. Mahor, John Arvin Riñen, and Novelyn A. Salazar. The study, Small-Scale Smart Poultry System Using the Internet of Things (IoT) Platform aims to create a small-scale smart poultry system using the IoT that will monitor, control and evaluate the poultry system. An Esp32 Arduino Microcontroller and a Raspberry Pi that were connected to the internet and to various sensors was used by the system. This study provides components like computerized feeding through conveyor, food and water level monitoring,

automatic filling, and manure cleaning that assist poultry breeders manage their tasks. This study helps the poultry farmers to have a more well-organized monitoring and a reduced human labor.

The Philippines has witnessed several occurrences of fish kill in the past years and many Filipino lives were affected from this ecological problem. The majority of fish kills are caused by degradation of the natural environment, with algal blooms being the most prevalent source of water quality concerns which includes low oxygen or toxin production. But with the advent of technology, this concern has a chance to be fixed. A group of researchers from Mariano Marcos State University conducted a thesis study with concern to the said matter. The study's major purpose is to design an automated paddle wheel aeration system that will reduce the Aerator's energy consumption and sustain the desired dissolved oxygen, making it simpler for farmers.

The researchers were able to develop a solution that can automate a paddle wheel and monitor the water quality of the pond. Furthermore, the researchers designed a prototype system that turns the paddle wheel when dissolved oxygen levels are low and monitors water quality parameters such as temperature, pH, and, most significantly, dissolved oxygen (DO) to assist fish farmers in their livelihood. The automated paddle wheel aeration system was proven to be effective and useful for the aquatic ecosystem as well as for the fish farmers. This remarkable undertaking was conducted by Mark Alfred V. Abian, Luigi Alec R. Adarne, Owen James J. Bautista, Crisnhere Corpuz, Joshua Nephtali L. Malata, Wrenzie Claire N. Salvador, and Lawrence R. Solsoloy.

Having an efficient flood response operation system to organize all actions among several connected agencies is critical during a flood. For this reason, a group of students from the Department of Computer Engineering at the Mariano Marcos State University developed a real-time flood detection system using Raspberry Pi and a web application

The system had a notification system for flood monitoring via SMS and email. This study may prove to be helpful to aqua farmers, the local government, and future researchers. DEVELOPMENT OF AN IOT – BASED FERTIGATION SYSTEM FOR GARLIC

he Ilocos region is home to one of the Philippines' top garlic producers. Farmers in the region turned to other high-value crops due to a declining trend in productivity and heavy competition from imported garlic, resulting in a decrease in garlic production volume. Hence, computer engineering students from Mariano Marcos State University constructed a thesis study with regard to the said topic. The researchers' names were Leo Aries G. Adolfo, Eva May A. Balbas, Roldan T. Basig, Ronelyn Jane B. Dumlao, Jimmy Jr. I. Jimenez, Lemar C. Manarpaac, and Laarni P. Miguel. The goal of this thesis study, Development of an IoT-Based Fertigation System

for Garlic, was to fabricate and test an automated fertigation system with a built-in irrigation system to reduce manual labor and increase garlic production yields when compared to traditional farming methods. It also contains a web application monitoring system that keeps track of the NPK nutrients in the soil in order to keep garlic growing.

The web application allows the user to control and monitor the fertigation and irrigation processes at all times. This study introduced a more efficient and modern automatic fertigation and irrigation system for our younger generation of farmers.

echnology has been progressing rapidly.

From robots that are capable of handling specific tasks to machines that could mimic human behavior, artificial intelligence is surely getting more attention in the digital world. It appears that, with the continuing advances in computers, some programs have already reached the performance level of human experts, especially in accomplishing difficult tasks.

And in the year 2017, the De La Salle University (DLSU) Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Health Technologies (DLSU-IBEHT) has created 3D-printed wearable robots that are capable of assisting injured, post-stroked patients in their journey toward recovery.

These robots are called “Agapay” and “Tayô.”

These two projects are the first pure Filipino-made

physical therapy equipment supported by the Department of Science and Technology Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD).

Agapay is a cost-effective 3D-printed wearable robot to help post-stroke and other injured patients to move their upper limbs better and faster. Meanwhile, Tayô is a 3D-printed wearable machine that helps physical therapists to minimize lifting, mobilizing, and transferring patients with injuries in their lower extremities.

According to the DOST, Agapay already has three working prototypes, while the Tayô project completed its clinical testing phase last May 2020. With these advancements in the medical and technological field, the path of recovery for those who are suffering from stroke and muscle numbness will be much easier to attain.

o cement yourself as one of the college’s highest jumpers is in itself, a hard feat to achieve. To also be recognized as one of the fastest runners is rarely heard of. For Staycy Khaye Rodrigo, a 3rd-year BSCpE student, it was just another day at the office. After bagging 1st and 3rd places in high jump and 100m dash during the university games, she showed a feeling of euphoria as she went home, unknowingly aware of a SCUAA call-up that awaits her. From then on, it would not be the last time that Staycy displayed her beautiful smile.

Beginnings…

Sic parvis magna – greatness from small beginnings. It was certainly no different for young Bambi, a nickname they often use for Staycy. Bambi and her friends would often find themselves playing near the beach. They would build sand castles and swim, among other things. At times, they would chase each other along the shore, and it helped in her physical development.

Much of the credit for her athletics skills went to her childhood experiences as it helped shaped the type of woman she was emerging to be.

Beyond the Bar: Staycy’s Path to Transcending Greatness

came when she was in the 3rd grade.

Fate has it that she and her brother were put on the same team, as her brother encouraged her to participate in the 100m dash. Like little David, Staycy aligned herself with a bunch of Goliaths, 6th graders of whom were anticipated to steamroll past their opponents. Her first of many achievements almost didn’t come to fruition as she almost got cheated on by a 6th grader who claimed she crossed the finished line first. But justice and equality eventually prevailed, garnering her the 3rd place in the competition.

A Woman of Habit With every battle comes proper training, no matter the level of competition. For Staycy, her way of approaching the game will always be the same. Strenuous trainings were the highlight of Staycy’s preparation before every major event that surfaced. Her attitude towards trainings is as disciplined as it gets. From cardio sessions to leg strengthening exercises, she makes sure that she is prepared for anything during the event. The final act of her preparation phase comes before the start of the event, in which she engages in simple breathing techniques to calm her whole system, a key aspect which helps her execute properly during the event

Staycy’s level of competitiveness is unmatched in trackand-field events, which is why she rarely walks away without a medal or a trophy in her hands. After every win, she indulges herself on eating her favorite foods, a habit she has grown accustomed to because of the strict rules that her trainers impose during her training regimens.

Sometimes, she would reward herself with simple gifts, such as clothing wear she’d use for school.

This has been a habit of her ever since she started to involve herself in track-and-field competitions.

Embodying the Stallion Spirit After her exceptional performance in the university games during her freshmen year, Staycy was called on to the Physical Education office, who asked her to be an official participant for MMSU in the Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) meet. She said yes, marking her first tenure as a representative for the green and gold university. An official meeting followed suit afterwards, which emphasized on the specific drills each athlete must do in preparation for the SCUAA. Because she was used to high and intensive trainings, Staycy was thrown off-course when she witnessed the training regimen for SCUAA. She described the experience as “slack”, having no control of training hours. As a student with two events in a regional competition, it was hard for her to manage being able to balance her life as a student and as an athlete, which led to long and sleepless nights. That eventually led to exhaustion from her part. When asked about her experience, she said, “I cannot just neglect my academics for sports. It wouldn’t make sense. It is exhausting being able to be ready for school and athletics at the same time, while having a physically and mentally tired body.” However, little did she know that her hard work and dedication will eventually bear fruits of their own.

Bringing Home, the Bacon…

The dawn breaks as the day of the competition arrives.

Like the usual, Staycy immersed herself in her breathing techniques to calm her whole body before the start of the competition. As she positioned herself before the bar, a pinch of nervousness and doubt crossed Staycy’s mind, scared of an injury that may arise following her performance. However, her sense of calmness eventually prevailed, as she slowly counted her check marks before finally taking off and successfully clearing the height of

the bar. The whole crowd exploded with cheers, as she was declared the 1st placer for High Jump.

With one more event to finish, Staycy mustered all the energy left from her tank as she suited up for the 100m dash. Following her victory in the last event, all the momentum eventually shifted to her side. She started sluggishly yet gained enough composure to stay neck-in-neck with the other athletes. After a few seconds, a green and gold jersey can be seen, visibly separating itself from the pack of running athletes, eventually crossing the finish line and yet again garnering a 1st place finish. Staycy savored the moment as she bagged a rare two 1st-place finishes during the SCUAA event proper.

As she and her friends went to the food stalls to celebrate, she was greeted by her instructor, who congratulated her for bagging gold medals for the university.

Numerous congratulatory messages soon followed thereafter, bringing a dazzling smile that Staycy cannot resist to display. As she and her fellow athletes prepare themselves to go home, she looked back at the field, uttered a prayer, before entering the bus and relaxing on her way back to her hometown in Pagudpud.

A Bigger Opportunity… Cut Short That same night, she received a message from the university, stating that she is going to compete in the National SCUAA following her legendary victories.

Staycy was living the dream. It was her chance to add a bigger achievement to an already legendary career.

As she told her sisters and cousins about the possibility of bringing home a national trophy, her moment of celebration got cut short as the pandemic hit, effectively casting aside all human endeavors for the foreseeable future.

So… What is Next for Staycy?

Staycy is now in her third year, two years removed from her participation during the last SCUAA. And as we wait for the re-opening of the athletic association, there’s a chance that we won’t see an appearance from her again in regional competitions during her years as a college student. For Staycy, she is now venturing into a different path, no longer just running on a rubberized floor, and her goals no longer just a hundred meters away. She was once a young little girl just running along the shores of the beach, and as the circle of life comes back to finally end its amazing story, may Bambi find herself surrounded by little sunflowers in a sunken platform, as they call on her name and witness the becoming of a woman who is about to enter the adult life.
