Letter from MAYOR TAYLOR

Thank You Blue Box Champs
Newmarket and York Region are leaders when it comes to keeping waste out of landfills, diverting almost two-thirds of it from landfill.
York Region’s waste diversion has ranked first among large urban municipalities for the past 10 years, diverting 65 per cent of its waste from landfill last year – a rate that is independently verified to ensure that Blue Box and Green Bin waste is recycled or composted. When you factor in the waste used to generate electricity, York Region diverts 92 per cent of its waste from landfills!
These great achievements demonstrate our collective commitment to reducing our impact on the planet. Congratulations and thank you Newmarket residents for your dedication to recycling, composting, and environmental sustainability.
This is a great example of how small steps repeated can have a big impact. Not wanting to rest on our laurels, town staff continue to engage residents about recycling. The Town recently won a silver award for its awareness campaign from the Municipal Waste Association as part of Plastic Free July.
No act is too small when comes to our planet. Being diligent about recycling and composting keeps more waste out of landfill and reduces demand for raw materials. Keep up the good work Newmarket!
On July 15th, The Samosa Master Inc. South Asian Grocery & Fresh Food, hosted the 2nd annual South Asian Summer Meet & Greet at the Newmarket Community Centre. The evening included music, games, good food and good times with good company!
