Sen. Martinez Announces State Funds To Help Libraries Enhance Facilities

Several libraries serving the New York State Senate’s Fourth Senatorial District will soon be turning a new page as they improve their facilities to better serve patrons. State Sen. Monica R. Martinez announced today that the Babylon, Deer Park, West Babylon, and West Islip public libraries have been awarded more than $410,000 through the State Aid for Library

The grants awarded are as follows:

Construction program to make critical infrastructure improvements. These upgrades will allow the libraries to remain welcoming and functional spaces for the community.

“Much like a well-read book whose binding and pages wear down over time, so too does the physical library building,” said Sen. Martinez. “These renovations will ensure these community centers stack up to the demands

placed on them and provide safer, more accessible spaces where everyone can learn, connect, and grow. I’m proud to support these efforts to keep our libraries running smoothly for all who visit them.”

More than half of New

York’s public library buildings are over 60 years old, with many others facing challenges such as outdated infrastructure and limited accessibility. The State Aid for Library Construction program addresses these issues by providing critical support to modernize facilities so they can continue serving their communities effectively. The 2023-2024 state budget allocated $34 million in capital funds for public library construction, with some projects receiving up to 75% of eligible costs. These funds help libraries upgrade their spaces and adapt to evolving community needs, including projects that enhance heating and cooling systems, improve broadband access, create spaces for community activities, and make other essential renovations to ensure they remain welcoming, energyefficient, and fully accessible.

Anything But A Washout For West Islip’s Homecoming

The rain did not dampen the spirits of the West Islip community as they came out to celebrate the district’s homecoming on Sept. 28. The festivities kicked off with a parade down Higbie Lane to the West Islip High School football field.

West Islip administrators, Board of Education members, cheerleaders, football players and the homecoming court did their best to stay dry as they made their way to the field. The freshman, sophomore, junior and

senior classes paraded their homecoming banners around the track just before kickoff. The Lions squared up against the Centereach Cougars and dominated the game from the start. Some highlights include Jake Lella’s three interceptions

and Jayson Carlson’s four tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery. Stephen McDermott had five tackles and a sack, and Max Tate had seven tackles. TJ Sonnenberg rushed for 102 yards and had two touchdowns. Jake Kramer

ran for 107 yards and scored a touchdown. The Lions took the victory by a score of 28-0.

The West Islip crowds stayed loud and proud despite the wet weather conditions. Even though they couldn’t perform

their halftime routines, the varsity, junior varsity and middle school cheerleaders stayed on the track to keep the crowd engaged throughout the game.

Science Students Spend Time At Brookhaven National Lab

Research Institute Experience students from West Islip High School spent two weeks this summer at Brookhaven National Laboratory. They learned about the facilities available at BNL, including the National Synchrotron Light Source II. The NSLS-II is one of the most advanced synchrotrons in the world where students can use X-rays and infrared light to analyze the elemental makeup and structure of materials at nanoscale resolution.

West Islip High School student researchers collaborated with students from ShorehamWading River High School and Westhampton Beach High School to design experiments that analyzed microplastics found in carrots and potatoes, oyster shells, and seaweed. Students will use the skills they learned this summer to design research projects in collaboration with BNL scientists throughout this school year.
