Army Challenge Tests West Babylon Students
West Babylon Senior High School students put their fitness skills to the test as they participated in the Army Fitness Challenge on Nov. 12. During their physical education classes, students were divided into groups and went headto-head against their classmates – as well as other school districts – to see if they had what it takes to be Army strong.
Local Army soldiers took over the physical education classes as part of the challenge. Students rotated through various stations where they also learned about living a healthy lifestyle and the importance of being active. The four stations – buddy carry, modified sprint/ weighted carry relay, cross functional fitness relay and Hex bar lifts/teambuilding
– challenged their physical strength but encouraged students to work together. Additionally, the West Babylon classes will have their times at each station compared with other schools in the area to potentially earn the title of the Army’s Certified Fittest School.

Even though the debate continues regarding the merits of artificial and real Christmas trees, it seems there is a winner, at least within the United States. According to Statista, 47 percent of American households own an artificial Christmas tree, while 24 percent purchase real trees. Though real trees might not be as popular as their artificial alternatives, the number of real trees that are purchased each year remains significant. According to the National Christmas Tree Association, roughly 25 to 30 million real Christmas trees are sold annually in the United States.

The Meaning Of The Menorah
Menorahs are a prominent symbol of Chanukah. Menorahs are seven-branched candelabras that have been used in Jewish worship since ancient times. The seven branches refer to the seven days of creation. The menorah is the traditional symbol of Judaism and the emblem of the state of Israel. For Chanukah, a nine-branched
candelabra called a hanukkiah is used, but the word "menorah" has become interchangeable. The Chanukah menorah consists of nine candles. The center and ninth candle are referred to as the Shamash. It is used to light all the other candles. The Shamash is raised above the other candles to make it kosher. The lighting of the
menorah over the eight days of Chanukah symbolizes the miracle that occurred during the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean revolt. The sacred oil, of which there was only enough for one day's lighting, miraculously lasted for eight days.
Babylon’s Saffron United Pipe Band Celebrates Their 62nd Anniversary - Supports Our Veterans
Saffron United Pipe Band recently celebrated their 62nd anniversary, while also supporting our veterans with performances at Honor Flight Long Island and Babylon Village Veteran’s Day Parade.
Babylon’s own, Saffron United Pipe Band, led by Pipe Major Bob Farrell, recently
celebrated their 62nd anniversary. The anniversary was celebrated at the AOH Hall / Irish Cultural Center here in Babylon Village at the 62nd annual Piper’s Ball. Recently, the band was featured in two veteran events. The band performed at Islip MacArthur Airport for the return of our military
veterans from Washington, DC aboard Honor Flight Long Island. Pipe Major Farrell said, “it’s a privilege to perform for those men and women that return home from spending their day in our Nation’s capital”. The Honor Flight organization offers veterans a full day in Washington,
DC. An Honor Flight brings the community together to thank these veterans with an all-expenses paid trip to Washington DC to see their memorials and to experience a full day of honor and thanks for their service.
On November 11th, Saffron United Pipe Band took part in the Babylon
Village Veteran’s Day Parade. The annual parade, hosted by Babylon’s American Legion Post 94, was very well attended by village residents, elected officials and many school bands and local organizations. Pipe Major Farrell said, “participating in this parade, in our hometown village of
Babylon, is our way to giving back and to say thank you to all our veterans”.
Saffron United Pipe Band was founded in 1962 at the Ancient Order of Hibernians in America, Suffolk County’s St. Patrick’s Division 2 in Babylon, Long Island. The band is celebrating their 62nd anniversary in 2024.
