Decision Day Celebrated In West Babylon

DECISION DAY CELEBRATED IN WEST BABYLON - On May 2, West Babylon Senior High School recognized the post-secondary plans of the members of the Class of 2023. The date is known as the official “decision day” for those students headed to college in the fall. In celebration of Decision Day, students and staff at West Babylon Senior High School proudly wore their college gear to school and gathered with their friends for photo opportunities. Clubs Makes Connections

CLUBS MAKES CONNECTIONS - West Babylon Junior High School has dozens of clubs for students in all grades to connect with peers. The art club meets weekly; one day for sixth grade students and another for seventh and eighth graders. The club is currently working on vision boards and has completed projects such as origami, scratch art and shells/rock art this year. Another club option for students who love to write is the newspaper club. Open to all grades, these students conduct interviews and create the content for the online winter and spring editions of the school’s newspaper.

What Are Clinical Trials?

Breast cancer treatments are highly effective, which is one reason why the National Cancer Institute can report that the five-year survival rate for non-metastatic breast cancer is 90 percent. However, in certain situations, doctors may feel that the existing standard for breast cancer treatment may not be enough to help women overcome their

disease. In such instances, doctors may discuss clinical trials with women battling breast cancer. The American Cancer Society defines clinical trials as research studies in which people volunteer to help doctors find ways to prevent or treat disease. The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.® points out that all current standards of treatment began

as clinical trials. However, that does not mean women diagnosed with breast cancer should automatically sign up to participate in clinical trials. There are pros and cons to participating in clinical trials, and breast cancer patients can speak with their medical teams about the advantages and disadvantages of each trial they’re considering. One

myth worth dispelling is that clinical trials are only an option for people who have been diagnosed with advanced stage cancer. In fact, the NCI notes that clinical trials are available for all stages of cancer. Steven J. Flotteron recognized West Babylon’s Kerry Rudden as this year’s Suffolk County 1916 Easter Rising Memorial Scholarship recipient. She was presented with a $1,500 check during the

Annual Wreath Laying and Remembrance at the Easter Rising Centennial Memorial located at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip.

A coalition of Irish American groups in Suffolk County joined in a campaign to raise funds for a memorial to the 1916 Easter Rising.

Members of the local chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Emerald Societies of the Suffolk County Police and Fire Departments and the Gerry Tobin Irish Language School erected the memorial behind the Peter Cohalan Court complex in 2016.

Alzheimer’s Community Forum Takes Place June 7

In partnership with the Copiague Memorial Library, Catholic Charities of Long Island and The Bristal at West Babylon, the Long Island Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association for an in-person event called “Alzheimer’s Community Forum” on Wednesday, June 7 from 6-7 p.m. at Copiague Memorial Library.

“Alzheimer’s Community Forum” will provide an opportunity to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and memory loss in this brief communityfocused listening session. We will review the basics

of these conditions, services of the Alzheimer’s Association, and how we can expand the reach of programs and services.

“This provides a great opportunity for the community to come together to discuss their experiences and needs,” said Kate Anastasia, Director of Programs for the Alzheimer’s Association Long Island Chapter. We want to continue to expand our reach in the Long Island community and show nobody is alone.”

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. Supporting Small Businesses

Supporting small businesses ensures more money stays in the communities those businesses serve. The U.S. Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at

a small business stays in the community. On the flip side, when a person spends $100 at a big-box store or a national chain, only $14 remains in the community. Local businesses are more likely to utilize other local

businesses, such as banks, service providers and even farms. Small businesses also pay employees, many of whom are local and shop local, thereby keeping even more dollars in their communities.

PSEG Foundation To Grant $1 Million To Local Organizations

The PSEG Foundation announced the 2023 request for proposals for the annual Neighborhood Partners Program, with grants available ranging from $500 to $15,000. Eligible 501(c)(3) organizations in New Jersey and Long Island, New York are encouraged to apply. Applications will be evaluated and grants awarded based on demonstrated program effectiveness, depth, breadth and overall alignment with the PSEG Foundation strategic pillars, which are environmental sustainability, social justice and equity and economic empowerment.

“We’re pleased to make $1 million in grant funding available through our very popular Neighborhood Partners Program, where we see local heroes making a difference in the lives of others throughout PSEG’s

service territories,” said Calvin Ledford Jr., PSEG Foundation president. “We seek to partner with people who have a track record of success and who present viable plans for addressing today’s largest challenges including those of sustainability, equity, social justice and economic empowerment.”

Last year the PSEG Foundation awarded more than 300 Neighborhood Partners Program grants. For example, America’s Grow-a-Row received funding for its fresh produce initiative. This program provides nutritious produce to regional hunger relief agencies and at local free farmers markets in communities that lack reliable access to affordable fresh produce. In Long Island, Habitat for Humanity used its grant for the Reuse, Reduce, Repurpose Program to help divert more than 3 million pounds of waste

from local landfills that were repurposed and sold at a fraction of the cost to benefit its clients, families and the local community.

“PSEG is the perfect example of corporate social responsibility in action. Their commitment to feeding those faced with hunger and food insecurity runs deep throughout their organization. From the countless hours PSEG employees have invested by volunteering in the fields, to helping underwrite a portion of our farming expenses,” said Chip Paillex, president and founder, America’s Grow-a-Row. “We could not be more grateful for PSEG and the PSEG Foundation’s support that allowed us to positively impact approximately 100,000 people in need last year.”

West Babylon Team Takes Second In Kite Festival

WEST BABYLON TEAM TAKES SECOND IN KITE FESTIVAL - On April 29, three teams representing West Babylon High School competed at the third annual Kite Festival at Cedar Beach. Schools from the township of Babylon, including Copiague, Wyandanch and West Babylon, competed in the annual kite festival by creating and flying their own kites. This competition included grades K-12, divided into three divisions: elementary, middle and high school. Despite some damage taken by endless practice flights, one of the West Babylon High School teams placed second in the high school division. This event is co-sponsored by the North Babylon Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Babylon.
