In a heartwarming display of community spirit, Councilman Terence McSweeney recently joined forces with the Lindenhurst OLPH Knights of Columbus and Villa Pizza on Wildwood Avenue to raise funds for AMVETS, an organization dedicated to supporting veterans and their families. Thanks to the generosity of local residents and the partnership of these dedicated organizations, the effort resulted in a donation of over $800, which was formally presented to AMVETS to help further their mission of serving those who have served our nation.

Walk with a Doc is a national program that offers free physician-led walking events in communities around the world, and we’re proud to bring these events to our Long Island neighbors. Get in some steps, talk with our docs along the way, and learn about the actions you can take now to live a healthier life for good.

Celebrating 74 years in business, we are grateful to the many generations of loyal customers who have entrusted State Utilities with their interior comfort. Thank you.
Come the first Monday of September, many children and their parents start to face the reality that school, if it hasn’t yet started, is about to begin again. That’s because Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer. But there is much more to this holiday than barbecues and the notion that fall is right around the corner.
Labor Day was forged by the labor movement
The Adoption Of Labor Day Took Hard Work
of the late nineteenth century. Many workers during this time felt they were underpaid and overworked. Conditions at their places of employment also lacked adequate safety. These workers banded together to fight for higher wages, shorter workdays and improved working conditions.
Before it was adopted as an American federal holiday, Labor Day was first
recognized by labor activists and individual states.
Although New York was the first state to introduce a bill, Oregon actually was the first to pass a law recognizing Labor Day, which the state first celebrated on February 21, 1887. Four more states followed suit that year. By the end of the decade, three more states passed Labor Day holiday laws.
In recognition of the momentum of Labor Day at
the state level, and with the adoption of the holiday by another 23 states by 1894, Congress passed an act on June 28, 1894, officially making the first Monday in September a legal holiday each year.
The United States is not alone in devoting a holiday to celebrate its labor history and honor the contributions of workers.
Canada celebrates Labour Day to remember the rights
of workers, which include paid holidays, medical care, fair hours, union wages, and safe workplaces. Labour Day was declared a legal holiday by the Parliament of Canada on July 23, 1894.
The earliest Labour Day celebrations were held in the spring, but eventually were moved to September.
Labor Day remains a time to honor and affirm the dignity of working people across the nation. It also affords
Lindenhurst’s Gollinge Graduates U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
Eric Stephen Gollinge, son of Stephen & Debbie Gollinge, of Lindenhurst recently graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point, NY. Gollinge earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission in the U. S. armed forces. He also earned a Merchant Marine officer license, qualifying him to serve as an officer on any ship in the U.S. flag merchant marine.
Gollinge is a graduate of Lindenhurst High School.
The United States Merchant Marine Academy is one of five U.S. federal service academies. It educates and graduates licensed Merchant Marine officers to serve the nation during peace and war. In addition to the rigorous academic and physical requirements for admission, applicants must be nominated by their Congressman or Senator. Gollinge was nominated by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
All USMMA graduates incur an obligation to serve the United States. The U.S. Flag Merchant Marine –manned exclusively by American mariners – is essential for securing the country’s commerce in peacetime and delivering warfighters, weapons, and military supplies in times of conflict. The majority of “Kings Pointers” serve for eight years as Navy reservists in the Strategic Sealift Officer Program while working aboard U.S.
flag vessels; others will serve on active duty in our nation’s armed forces.
Gollinge will fulfill his commitment serving on his Unlimited Third Assistant Engineer’s License in the US Merchant Marine and as a US Navy Strategic Sealift Officer. By virtue of their elite training and real-world experience, graduates are ready to go on day one in service of American military strength and economic power. As part of his four year education, Gollinge spent one year training as a cadet aboard ocean going vessels. The Academy welcomed Secretary of Transportation Sean P. Duffy as the
commencement speaker. Secretary Duffy told the graduates, “The mission you all are about to embark on could not be more important at this very moment when our nation confronts conflict in the Middle East. Whether it’s the Strait of Hormuz or the South China Sea, there are rough waters ahead. You will find yourself in harm’s way. And you do it for your country.”
Dedicated during WWII, USMMA has since served the nation in both peace and war. Learn more at www.WeAreTheUSMMA. com

Plumbing Contractors Association Of Long Island Sponsors Pizza Lunch For Children At Sunrise Day Camp
For the fourth year in a row, the Plumbing Contractors Association of Long Island (PCALI) proudly sponsored a pizza lunch for the campers and staff at Sunrise Day Camp, a no-cost summer camp for children battling cancer and their siblings.
This year’s lunch, which fed several hundred campers and 200 staff members, was held during one of the most anticipated events of the summer Color War, a spirited tradition that brings joy, energy, and friendly competition to the camp community.
Sunrise Day Camp provides a much-needed escape for children facing serious health challenges, allowing them and their siblings to enjoy the fun of summer in a supervised, emotionally supportive environment all free of charge. The camp is a sanctuary for healing,
laughter, and connection.
The Plumbing Contractors Association of Long Island has remained a proud supporter of this mission, with long-time PCALI member Larry Levine of Par Plumbing playing an instrumental role in fostering the relationship between PCALI and Sunrise Day Camp over the years.
Jeff Connelly, President of PCALI, shared his thoughts on the organization’s ongoing commitment: “It’s an incredible privilege to support Sunrise Day Camp and the amazing kids who attend. Seeing their smiles and energy reminds us why we do this year after year. We’re honored to play even a small part in helping these kids just be kids.”
Deborah Lom of Sunrise Day Camp says, “We are grateful for the support that PCALI gives to Sunrise and the Levine Golf Classic. It’s because of supporters

New York Blood Center Launches Fourth Annual “Pint
With Over 50 Local Breweries And Frozen Treat Shops Across
New York Blood Center (NYBC) is kicking off its fourth annual “Pint for a Pint” campaign to encourage blood donations during the critical summer months at donor centers through August 31, 2025, all who come to donate at NYBC’s donor centers will receive a voucher for a free beverage or frozen treat at a participating local brewery, pub, or frozen treat shop.
Since its launch in 2022, the “Pint for a Pint” campaign has doubled in size, with more than 50 breweries, pubs, and frozen treat shops
across the region coming together to support the critical need for blood donations. This year’s full list of participating establishments can be found at https://www.nybc. org/pint/
“At Newburgh Brewing Company, we take enormous pride in being supportive of our community,” said Paul Halayko, President and COO of Newburgh Brewing Company. “By working with the NYBC through Pint for a Pint, we are thanking folks for doing something selfless and important: donating blood. It’s a way
we can ask our community to be supportive of such an important cause, and then reward them with a delicious pint of Newburgh beer!”
Following a sharp drop in donations over the 4th of July holiday, the region’s supply of O- and O+ blood is currently at a critical 1-2 day level, and overall collections are nearly 25% below the level needed to meet hospital demands. Summer has brought an expected decline in donations, driven by vacations and school breaks, but combined with increased trauma cases,
the impact on the local blood supply has been severe.
Type O-negative is the universal blood type used when seconds matter and a patient’s blood type is unknown. Type O-positive, the most common type, is in constant demand for surgeries, childbirth, cancer treatments, and daily medical care.
“Every pint counts, especially in the summer, and we are so grateful to these local establishments for coming together to support the critical need for blood donations in the summertime,” said
Andrea Cefarelli, Senior Vice President at New York Blood Center. “We hope this fun incentive will inspire returning and first-time donors to donate blood and enjoy a refreshing beverage or frozen treat on us. Blood donations are needed now more than ever.”
Blood donors can donate every 56 days, and platelet donors can donate twice a month. In light of recent updates to FDA guidance, more people than ever may now be eligible to give. To make an appointment, donors can call 1-800933-2566 or visit nybc.org. Can’t donate blood? You
can still make a life-saving impact by supporting NYBC’s mission through financial contributions or volunteering your time. Visit here to learn more: https://www.nybc.org/ support-us/
*Blood donors 21+ years of age are eligible. Prizes hold no cash value and are non-transferable. The type of beverage and frozen treat is at the venue’s discretion. Voucher must be redeemed on or before October 31, 2025, and cannot be used on the day of donation. Other restrictions may apply.
