Nine New Inductees In West Babylon Business Honor Society

The West Babylon Senior High School recently inducted new members into the New York State Business and Marketing Honor Society. The primary purpose of the New York State Business and Marketing Honor Society is to recognize students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in business education at the secondary level. Students must complete at least three units of business education prior to graduation and maintain a certain GPA. This year, the following students have received acceptance into the Business and Marketing Honor Society: Alexa Barbato, Mariely Cruz, Maya D’Angelo, Gianna Gentilesca, Zachariah Peter, Elena Savage, Christopher Serrano, Frank Weber and Cassidy Yates. Suffolk County Community College’s Joseph Gonzalez Named New York State’s 2024 New Century Transfer Scholar And Recipient Of The Prestigious David R. Pierce Scholarship

Suffolk County Community College’s Joseph Gonzalez has been named New York State’s 2024 New Century Transfer Scholar. Over 2,200 students from more than 1,300 college campuses nationwide were nominated. Only one New Century Transfer Scholar is selected from each state. He will receive a $2,250 scholarship.

New Century Transfer Scholars are selected based on their academic accomplishments, leadership, activities, and how they extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom. This program is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Foundation and the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, with additional support provided by the American Association of Community Colleges and Phi Theta Kappa.

Mr. Gonzalez is also the recipient of the prestigious David R. Pierce Scholarship. This scholarship is presented to the scholar selected each year from the AllUSA Academic Team to represent and speak on behalf of the scholars at American Association of Community College’s Annual Convention. As the 2024 Pierce Scholar, Mr. Gonzalez will receive a $5,000 scholarship to be disbursed for the fall 2024 term.

Mr. Gonzalez, a Liberal Arts-History major from West Babylon, NY, excels with a 4.0 GPA and consecutive Dean’s List recognition for the last two years. He holds key leadership positions at the college, including PTK Chapter President, President of Student

Hospital Association Offers

$2,000 Scholarship

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/ Communications, or Healthcare Administration.

(The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The

scholarship is administered by the Hospital Council’s Communications Committee.

Filing deadline is June 14, 2024.

TRADITION SHINES BRIGHT AT BLUE & GOLD

60 years of tradition was on full display as West Babylon Senior High School hosted its annual Blue & Gold competition from April 11-13. This year’s battle was superheroes and villians vs. horror movies. The stands were packed in a sea of blue and gold as the community came out in full force to support their favorite school color. The studentartists showed off their creativity as the school’s gymnasium was transformed into a work of art. The members of the props team showed off their skills, while the dance routines and choreography showcased the high level of talent. Following their entrances, each team showed off their routines with calisthenics, lyrical, hip-hop and marching performances. According to the American Institute of Stress, gardening sparks a level of creativity among enthusiasts, and that can help to alleviate stress by lowering levels of the hormone cortisol. In addition, authors of a 2022 study published in the journal Urban Forestry & Urban Greening concluded that gardening during the COVID-19 pandemic helped people cope with coronavirus-related stress through outdoor activity.

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) would like to inform residents about the Suffolk County’s special employment-readiness programs to assist those seeking a job or a new career.

According to Legislator Donnelly, the Suffolk County Department of Labor has a mulitude of resources to assist residents in their job searches through its One-Stop Employment Center. Among the innovative and award-winning services available are Job Fairs, held at convenient locations throughout the County,

One Word That Can Change Everything

Last week, I pulled out of my office parking spot which is on the corner of Linton Avenue and Montauk Highway (across from the Lindenhurst Diner). I sat at the red light and looked back at my building to see a mural I had painted on it when I moved in two years ago.

I saw the side of the building as a blank canvas and thought about all the people who would drive by my building every morning and every evening. This was a golden advertising opportunity, but what did I want to tell them? Maybe I could paint something about JoAnn Cilla Real Estate or come up with a witty tag line to get people to call me if they were looking to buy or sell a house.

Nah, that’s not my style. I would rather let my friends and residents of Lindenhurst know how much I appreciate the support they gave me when I started my business in 2021. I also wanted to let people know who might be new to the area, or even those just passing through for the day, that we appreciated them spending time in our town.

Yes, that was it, but what three words would make people stop what they were doing to appreciate where they were at that exact moment?

Then it hit me…

I want the mural to remind people to pause and appreciate the big victories and the quiet moments. I want it to say to my clients, thank you for your trust and friendship. To my team, thank you for your dedication and hard work. And to our community, thank you for making Lindenhurst the best place to live. If you’re passing by, I hope the message inspires you. And if you ever want to talk about our local real estate market or just want some advice, park next to the sign and come on in…my door is always open.
