Welcome to June, the month of graduations-diplomas, caps and gowns. As families, public officials, friends and education professionals arrived at Sunshine Prevention Center, everyone was filled with a sense of pride, excitement and community as the celebration of graduates and students moving up was about to begin. So what was different and why?
They say, “It Takes a Village.” Well, at the Sunshine Center, a NYS Department of Education accredited school program, overcoming obstacles and challenges to get to this special day is the motto for the event.
As Dr. Carol Carter, and co-founder Patti Kelly/Barker, welcomed everyone and opened the event, the magnitude of the creation of the center and the students/ families it changes was evident. The true meaning of family and support took on a special meaning, as each
without whom there would be no facility, since the Town leased the facility to Sunshine in 1996 for $1/year. Councilmembers included Jane Bonner who shared she had challenges herself as a teen and understands the struggles academically. Jonathan
Medford and Hauppauge.
Finally, the staff was recognized, without whom the programs and changes in students’ and family’s lives would never happen.
Finally, looking around the Sunshine property, one can see banners of all the supporters. It definitely takes a village,
individual who chose to speak shared how the Sunshine programs have changed their lives.
Public officials included Senator Mario Mattera, and Supervisor Ed Romaine from the Town of Brookhaven,

On November 17, 2022, the PSC issued a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need (CECPN) to Sunrise Wind LLC (SRW) to construct and operate the Sunrise Wind Cable Project (the Project), which is a 5.2-mile 320 kV DC submarine export cable from the New York State territorial waters boundary to the Smith Point County Park on Fire Island in the Town of Brookhaven (the Town), 17.5-miles of 320 kV DC onshore, underground transmission cable to a new Onshore Converter Station (the OnCS) in the Town, and 1.1 miles of 138 kV AC interconnection cable that will allow interconnection with the existing electric grid. The Project will transmit electricity produced by the Sunrise Wind Farm, to be located in federal waters approximately 30 miles off the east coast of Long Island, to the Holbrook Substation in the Town.
SRW’s Phase 1 Environmental Management and Construction Plan (Phase 1 EM&CP) was filed with the PSC on November 18, 2022 and is ripe for PSC review at its upcoming June session. The Phase 1 EM&CP details several categories of Project construction, including civil work at the Project’s Onshore Converter Station (OnCS), located at 608 Union Ave., Holtsville, NY and the preparation and use of two laydown yards, located at 580 Union Ave., Holtsville, NY and 60 Zorn Blvd., Yaphank, NY, all of which are located in the Town (together, the Phase 1A work). SRW will commence construction of the Phase 1A work prior to the remainder of Phase 1 activities. The Phase 1 EM&CP details the Project design relevant to this phase of construction and provides both typical and sitespecific techniques, procedures, and requirements to be followed in the construction of this phase of the Project by SRW to ensure environmental protection and maintain public health and safety.
Construction of Phase 1A work (i.e., the OnCS and laydown yards described above) is anticipated to commence on or after July 10, 2023.
An electronic version of the Phase 1 EM&CP and the entire administrative record supporting the issuance of the CECPN is available for public inspection online on the PSC’s Document and Matter Management page for this case at the following location: https://documents.dps.ny.gov/ public/MatterManagement/CaseMaster.aspx?MatterCaseNo=20-T0617&CaseSearch=Search. Those same materials can also be found by visiting the PSC’s website (http://www.dps.ny.gov), clicking on the “Search” tab, and entering “20-T-6017” in the “Search by Case Number” box.
Moreover, the Phase 1 EM&CP is also available for public inspection during normal business hours at the following public libraries: Brookhaven Free Library, the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Library, and the Sachem Public Library.
Further information about the Project may be obtained by visiting the Project website at www.sunrisewindny.com.
Additional information may be obtained and concerns regarding construction of the Project may also be made by emailing info@ sunrisewindny.com, calling SRW’s External Affairs Coordinator at 631629-8410, or writing SRW at 7 Wells Avenue, Suite 27, Newton, MA 02459. Inquiries and/or concerns may also be submitted online at www. sunrisewindny.com/contact.
The Project is under the jurisdiction of the PSC, which is responsible for enforcing compliance with the CECPN and Phase 1 EM&CP. The PSC may be contacted at:

Rocky Point Middle School’s Grade 8 Band, Chorus and Orchestra received Superior ratings at the Long Island Music Festival, held at Suffolk County Community College on June 1. The festival day was comprised of a performance component
paired with a recreational activity. First, the students performed for a panel of music educators from a variety of educational institutions, mostly at the collegiate level. Following their performances, the adjudicators then worked with the respective ensemble directors and
their students in a clinicstyle workshop. During the workshop, adjudicators spent time demonstrating ways in which to improve musical nuances, considerations to enhance the musicality and artistry, and offered conducting/ rehearsal strategies.

Ward Melville High School students set out around town to spread messages about the importance of preventing underage drinking. Spring semester health classes
participated in the Sticker Shock Campaign through the Town of Brookhaven’s Drug Prevention Coalition. They were tasked with creating sticker slogans and
designs to remind adults of the dangers of purchasing alcohol and vape products for minors. The Drug Prevention Coalition selected three finalists for print, and
students “shocked” the town by placing the stickers on products at local businesses.
Students traveled to Setauket Beverage, 7-Eleven on Old Town Road and
the Setauket Pasteria to strategically place the stickers on alcoholic beverage cases, take out bags and pizza boxes. The activity is a youth-driven approach
designed to reduce underage drinking, while allowing students to have a voice in addressing the problem.

PSEG Long Island and Island Harvest Food Bank are kicking off PSEG Long Island’s third annual Power to Feed Long Island summer-long food drive initiative.
Continuing through Sept. 22 – the last full day of summer – collection drives will be set up at six supermarkets across Long Island, where community members can donate nonperishable food and essential care items. This year’s goal is to collect the equivalent of 50,000 healthy, nutritious meals for Long Islanders facing food insecurity. Online donations are being accepted throughout the campaign at psegliny. com/feedli. Island Harvest estimates each dollar donated provides roughly two meals.
“We created PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island as a way to provide a venue for people to help people. In the past two
years, hundreds of Long Islanders have donated online and brought bags, carts and trunks filled with thousands of pounds of food to our collection sites to support the initiative,” said David Lyons, interim president and COO, PSEG Long Island. “Our goal this summer is to collect the equivalent of 50,000 meals because there is still hunger in every ZIP code. PSEG Long Island is committed to playing an active role in improving the communities we serve.
We are proud to partner with Island Harvest and our supermarket partners for the third year to help put food on the tables of families in our communities who need it.”
Hundreds of thousands of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout the year. During the summer months, there is a significant reduction
in food donations to local food banks, pantries and other programs. Compounding the issue, children are not in school where they can receive free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch. In addition, the pandemic and increased inflation rate continue to strain local food pantries and emergency feeding programs served by Island Harvest.
“Island Harvest Food Bank is grateful to our valued partners, PSEG Long Island, for hosting the third annual Power to Feed Long Island food collection event to help address the critical shortage of food through the summer months for people facing food insecurity,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “With school feeding programs halted for the summer break, families already struggling to make ends meet are
faced with additional challenges, and the support of PSEG Long Island, Stop & Shop, and the generosity of their customers will help ease that burden.”
Members of the public are encouraged to come to the collection sites and donate nonperishable food items. Collection bins and a drive-thru, drop-off option will be available at each location.
The food drives will take place on Fridays as follows:
· July 14 8 a.m. –
3 p.m. Stop & Shop
- 291 West Main Street, Smithtown, NY
· July 28 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Stop & Shop - 95 Old Country Road, Carle Place, NY
