Art Beyond Borders

In observation of National Foreign Language Week held in early March, the Language Other Than English (LOTE) Department at Longwood Junior High School displayed the Teacher’s Discovery Traveling Exhibit, “Art Beyond Borders.” In partnership with Teacher’s Discovery and The International Museum of Twenty-first Century Arts (TIMOTCA), the display was born from a series of international exhibits that had premiered at the headquarters of the United Nations. Animal Science Teacher Laura Donohue had the students’ undivided attention when she told them about the different animals they would be handling in her class such as snakes, ferrets, dogs, chinchillas, hamsters, rabbits, and turtles if they enrolled in the Academy at Bixhorn Technical Center. Students in the Animal Science Program also visit local farms that have horses, llamas, and goats. School Counselor Albana Sela invited the CTE teachers to the Career Day because she believes the information and opportunity to enroll in

the Academy is beneficial. “Good school habits, good attendance, and good behavior translate into good soft skills and career skills,” said Sela. With good school habits in hand, students have the opportunity to go to the Academy and learn by doing. Nielsen said, “I built a birdhouse for you today, but in my class we build a real full-size house each year and we collaborate with other programs like HVAC, electrical, and plumbing because we think it’s important to work together on projects.” Donohue explained the hands-on learning in her class. “You will learn how to properly handle and restrain animals, do physical exams, groom, bathe, feed, and clean cages. You will also learn the body system of animals, do customer service and community service, and
