- Town of Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter is pleased to announce that two of the Town’s employees working in the Town’s Public Information Office have been honored with a prestigious Folio award for the outstanding documentary, “The Blue Point Oyster.” Those employees are Communications Director, Caroline Smith and Videographer, Gary Licker. The award was presented by the Fair Media Council at their annual awards ceremony held at Gatsby on the Ocean on June 23, 2023.
“The Blue Point Oyster” is an exceptional documentary that highlights the Town of Islip’s efforts to enhance shellfish production and improve the water quality of the Great South Bay. This insightful film underscores the Town’s commitment to environmental preservation and emphasizes the integral role of community engagement in achieving these significant milestones.
The Fair Media Council, widely recognized as one of the oldest and most successful media watchdogs in the country, bestowed this honor upon Smith and Licker for their exceptional work in producing a documentary that captivated audiences and inspired action. The Folio award serves as a testament to the Town’s unwavering dedication and ability to raise awareness about the importance of preserving our environment.
Town of Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter expressed her admiration and praise for Smith and Licker’s contributions, stating, “Caroline and Gary have truly excelled in bringing attention to our town’s incredible efforts to enhance shellfish production and restore the water quality of the Great South Bay. ‘The Blue Point Oyster’ documentary showcases the Town of Islip’s commitment to environmental stewardship and the power of community collaboration. We are immensely proud of their accomplishments and all of our Town’s dedicated staff and the positive impact they have made.”

She added, “Receiving this Folio award from the Fair Media Council is a tremendous honor for the Town, and this has been something that has been an unwavering commitment on the part of Supervisor, Angie Carpenter. ‘The Blue Point Oyster’ documentary has allowed us to shed light on the Town of Islip’s environmental initiatives and highlight our community’s dedication to preserving our natural resources. We are grateful for the platform this award provides in spreading our message to a wider audience.”
Gary Licker, who shot, edited and directed the documentary, shared his enthusiasm for the award and its significance, saying, “I am deeply honored to receive this recognition for this documentary on Long Island’s Great South Bay. ‘The Blue Point Oyster’ project has been a labor of love, and I am grateful for the opportunity to showcase the Town of Islip’s commitment to environmental conservation. The Town of Islip Shellfish Hatchery, under the supervisor of DEC Commissioner Marty Bellew, produces nearly 25% of the total number of caged oysters harvested in New York State. Each oyster cleans nearly 50 gallons of water per day.
The Town of Islip extends its gratitude to the Fair Media Council for this recognition. The Town encourages individuals and communities to support and actively participate in endeavors aimed at enhancing shellfish production and safeguarding the water quality of the Great South Bay.

In a day filled with glitz, glamor and celebration, East Islip High School’s James Sturek and Jason Vetrano emerged as the champions in the highly competitive Best Sports Package category at the prestigious Broadcast Awards for Senior High. The dynamic duo’s exceptional work and undeniable talent in the field of sports journalism secured them the top spot, leaving a lasting impression on both the judges and the audience.
The BASH Awards, an annual event that recognizes excellence in broadcasting and journalism, draws participants from various media outlets and school districts. This year’s edition brought together a multitude of talented individuals who have made significant contributions to the world of high school sports broadcasting. Among them, Sturek and Vetrano stood out, showcasing their expertise, dedication and unwavering commitment to delivering outstanding sports coverage.
The winning East Islip entry demonstrated the pair’s ability to capture the essence
of the wrestling team’s journey in a comprehensive and engaging manner. Their package combined insightful analysis, captivating storytelling and impeccable presentation, showcasing the depth of their knowledge and their innate ability to connect with their audience.
Sturek, a seasoned sports journalist with years of experience under his belt, has been a prominent figure for WFTK Studios. Known for his charisma and indepth knowledge of various sports, he has built a solid reputation for delivering top-notch coverage.
Vetrano, the chief editor for WFTK Studios, brings his unique perspective and editing expertise to the table by seamlessly blending gripping narratives, cutting-edge visuals and insightful analysis. He has an innovative approach to storytelling, coupled with a keen eye for detail. Together, they form a formidable team, capturing the excitement and drama of sports events with precision and flair.
“The recognition bestowed upon James and Jason at the BASH Awards
solidifies their status as leaders in broadcasting for WFTK Studios and East Islip High School,” technology teacher Bill Lackner said.
“Their hard work, passion and dedication have not only entertained and informed viewers but have also elevated the standards for our studio moving forward.”
“After falling just short of our goal last year, Jason and I had high expectations for this year’s video,” Sturek said. “We were able to capitalize on top with exactly what we wanted, coming in first place. The grind and work we put into this video made the feeling of victory that much better.”
“After coming in second last year, James and I were determined to win this year,” Vetrano said. “We put countless hours of work and dedication into this project, and it really paid off. It was truly a one-of-akind experience to win such a prestigious competition. None of this would have been possible without the support from Mr. Lackner, my peers from WFTK and the East Islip wrestling community.”
To mark Fentanyl Awareness Day (May 9), parents who had lost children to the fentanyl and overdose epidemic painted memorial rocks with their children’s names and photos. These rocks were created to illustrate the number of people in the United States who die each day due to fentanyl poisoning and were displayed at a press conference with Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn and Long Island Coalition on Alcohol and Drug Dependence on May 9 at the Suffolk County Legislature. After being on display at the Suffolk County Legislature William H. Rogers Building for the past month, the rocks found a new permanent home at “Gabriel’s Giving Tree Memorial & Recovery Park”, a serene respite for reflection and inspiration located on the grounds of Seatuck National Wildlife Preserve, 550 South Bay Ave in Islip.
“We did this as an act of awareness and also a remembrance and tribute to our children,” said Lori Carbonaro of Selden, who lost her son Nicholas in 2014. “Our children are not just what they died of. They are more than that.”
“We thought that the rocks belong here under the Angel Tree of Remembrance in this park that is a place of healing and a place of contemplation,” said Paulette Phillipe of Mattituck, who created Gabriel’s Giving Tree (GGT) after her grandson Gabriel died of a fentanyl overdose in 2010. “What better place for these rocks to be?” she added.
“I believe that it will be a comfort to parents to visit the garden and see their child’s name and face on a rock,” said Carole Trottere, who lost her son Alex in 2018. “It may seem like a small thing, but I think it is a way of saying to the world, ‘I was here.’”
Fentanyl and other opioids are fueling the worst drug crisis in the history of the United States. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, in the United States more than 1,500 people per week die from an overdose of some kind of opioid. What’s more, during 2020 and 2021, New York’s opioid death rate exceeded the national death rate and 2022 statistics promise to be no better.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) fentanyl is now the leading cause of death for people 18-45 years of age.
This week volunteers from The RMR Group in Mineola helped to manicure the park and plant some donated flowers. They were Mike O’Shaughnessy, The RMR Group, senior director of engineering; Terri Silverman, The RMR Group, assistant property manager; James Zeppa, The RMR Group, director; and Ray Reres.

Town of Islip residents will hopefully be able to resolve town code violations locally at Town Hall through the Town’s Quality of Life Court, rather than traveling to 5th District Court in Ronkonkoma. At Tuesday’s Town Board meeting, the Islip Town Board unanimously approved the first step, advertising for a public hearing to enact Local Law 4, establishing chapter 69 of the Islip Town code, entitled “Bureau of Administrative Adjudication.”
“This will help us address many of the quality-of-life issues here in our Town,
and resolve them quickly, conveniently and directly with our residents. Far too often, these matters get hung up in District Court, being postponed repeatedly, rather than being addressed and resolved. The objective is to answer any additional questions residents may have, with the goal being compliance,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter. The court will address civil violations such as violations for decks; pools; un-registered vehicles; litter and debris and building permits.
Proceedings are expected to occur twice a
month, and will be handled by a rotation of four administrative law judges appointed. Representatives from the Town’s various departments will be on hand to facilitate the process. Town of Islip’s court is anticipated to begin in 2025. This is something that is already being done in the towns of Huntington and Babylon. Public comment can be made during the hearing set for Tuesday, July 18th, 2023 at 2 pm at Islip Town Hall, or to the Islip Town Clerk via email at townclerk@islipny.gov.
Please donate the items suggested below to help our neighbors in need. There will be a bin near the lobby to place donations in. The United States Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base has awarded Suffolk County Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing and Workforce Development program $2 million over five years to recruit and train the next generation of welders and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machine operators in support of the mission of one Columbia Class and two Virginia Class submarines.
The submarine industrial base is the United States’ unique and highly specialized workforce and manufacturing base which supports the skills and technology needed to design, build, repair and provide support for the Navy’s submarines. The Navy said there are five industrial base pipelines in the United States and estimates more than 130,000 new workforce personnel programwide will be needed between now and 2030 to fulfill its mission. Long Island is home to one of the densest pockets of manufacturers for the program.
The $2 million in scholarships will cover the full tuition of 100 students per year -- a total of 250 welders and 250 CNC Machine Operators over the five-year life of the program -- that will help local employers in the defense manufacturing pipeline fill a growing need for skilled workers, according to Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Edward Bonahue, who said the program will launch in the fall of this year.
“This investment in our welding and manufacturing certificates will allow us to get more trainees into the workforce more quickly,” Bonahue said. “The need for highly trained technicians in the defense manufacturing pipeline is a national priority, and we’re proud that the Navy and the Submarine Industrial Base recognize the critical role Suffolk’s workforce programs play in meeting that need,” Bonahue said.
