Thanksgiving Travel Tips - With Pets Are you taking a Thanksgiving Day road trip with your pet? Before you start dreaming of turkey and homemade pies, keep in mind that it’s important to plan ahead for pet travel and always keep the best interests of your furry, four-legged friend in mind. Traveling with your pet can be a wonderful and bonding experience or a not so pleasant one. It’s all a matter of proper planning and preparation. Your first decision is whether to bring your pet along with you on your trip. Not all pets are suited for travel. While it may be very tempting to bring your pet with you, keep in mind that not all pets are happy travelers. Things to consider include your pet’s temperament, any physical impairments, or

Tis’ The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Tis’ the season for outdoing ourselves – in every way… for feasting for what seems like days on end, for running up the credit cards on gifts for all our friends and loved ones – and occasionally ourselves – for “decking the halls” with extravagant garlands and twinkling lights and precious ornaments… There are many who detest this time of year, for precisely these reasons. But I love it.

Tis’ the season to be jolly, right? And why not … we spend enough of our days consumed by outside issues beyond our control. We deserve this brief reprieve from the madness, don’t we? No time like the present to savor the moment and enjoy all of life’s blessings. And, for me, this holiday season will be a year of firsts: First Christmas in my new apartment. First opportunity to decorate and put up my very own tree. First chance to perhaps host a gathering

of my own and – dare I even say it – cook?!? Perhaps not. We wouldn’t want to be too ambitious! But still, the season will be exciting. It is a time for establishing new traditions and carrying on old ones. For reconnecting with those we have lost touch with over the last year. For spending quality time with those who mean the most. It is time, time we cannot get enough of. However you choose to spend it, may you enjoy it wholeheartedly.

This means a visit to the vet for a medical checkup and to ensure that your pet is upto-date with all necessary vaccinations. The veterinarian can also issue a health certificate for your pet. If you and your pet will be traveling across state lines, you must obtain a recent health certificate and a certificate of rabies vaccination. If your plans include traveling with your pet from the United States to Canada, you will need to bring along a certificate issued by a veterinarian that clearly identifies the animal and certifies that your pet has been vaccinated against rabies during the preceding 36 month period. Text Free Teen Driving In observance of National Teen Personal Safety Awareness Week, the Town of Islip Youth Bureau is helping to spread the word about the dangers of texting while driving, an epidemic that is rapidly spreading across America. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading killer of teens in New York State and texting and distracted driving is a factor in 8 out of 10 accidents. The Islip Youth Bureau is distributing Wrist Band/ Phone Guards empowering High School students to be safe TEXT FREE DRIVERS. “Motor vehicle accidents are the leading killer among teenagers in New York State,” noted Councilman Anthony Senft, Jr. “And texting and driving is a significant factor in 8 out 10 accidents. We commend high school students who realize and appreciate the serious consequences of texting and driving. Texting and driving is dangerous to everyone in the car and everyone else on the road.” High School students will be able to get free “DNT TXT N DRV” wrist band/phone guards at their schools. The bands, which can be worn or wrapped around a cell phone to block texting, will serve

as reminders of the dangers involved. Even a quick text message can be deadly. In addition to the bands, students are encouraged to take the Text Free Driving Pledge. Some statistics

beers; Taking eyes off the road for an average text of 5 seconds, at 55 MPH is like driving the length of a football field - totally blind; Distracted driving injures 330,000 people every year; Texting while driving is dangerous to everyone in the car and everyone else on the road and lastly, Texting while driving ends and ruins lives EVERYDAY! Councilman Anthony Senft, Jr., Receiver of Taxes Alexis Weik, and Town Clerk Olga Murray met with teenage students from area high schools last week to discuss safe driving, the importance of staying focused while driving, ways to reduce common distractions in the car, as well as pledged to join them in their awareness campaign. For further information about this and other Islip youth services contact the Islip Youth Bureau at youthbureau@ townofislip-ny.gov or 631.224.5320. For teen and parent resource guides regarding safe driving visit http://www.dmv.ny.gov/ supporting this pledge include: Texting makes a teen youngerdriver/ driver 23 times more likely to crash; Texting while driving is the equivalent of driving after drinking 4

Community Efforts Honored

The Great South Bay YMCA recently hosted a volunteer event to build a playground at their facility in Bay Shore. They were selected for this project because they serve the Bay Shore community, an area that was hit hard by Super-Storm Sandy. Over 500 children play at their playground every day, and marking their 20th Anniversary they were in need of an upgrade. The event was part of “Project

Rebuild,” sponsored by BNP Paribas International Bank and KaBOOM a nonprofit organization, which is dedicated to childhood activity and play. With a Creative Drawing Project this past summer, many of the young members of the YMCA helped design the playground. The YMCA is always there for the community under the dedicated leadership of its Executive Director, Bob Pettison… along

with the very dedicated staff and many supportive volunteers. Treasurer Carpenter, along with many volunteers, was there to support the event. “It is always nice to see the community come together with a common goal, especially for children. This will be a great playground for the children to enjoy for many years,” commented Carpenter.

TRI-M CAR WASH - On Saturday, October 26th, the Bay Shore Middle School chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society held a Car Wash at Fifth Avenue School. The students washed cars and raised $500 for the organization. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The rest of the money will be used to offset the cost of a field trip to Lincoln Center later in the year.

visit as each province has its own requirements. Plan for Restraint: Have a plan for how you’re going to properly restrain your pet in your vehicle. This is a crucial element of pet travel that is not taken seriously enough. The reality is that hundreds of pets are injured or even killed each year because they are allowed free reign in cars, trucks, RVs, and SUVs. Even more real is the toll in human life and property damage caused when an “enthusiastic” animal distracts a driver, leading to an accident. Vehicle pet barriers, pet seat belts, pet car seats, and pet travel crates are all excellent ways to keep your pet (and you) safe when traveling in your vehicle. It’s important to familiarize your pet with the vehicle restraint of choice weeks or months before traveling so that they are comfortable. Temporary ID Tag: In the unfortunate event that your pet runs off while you’re traveling. A temporary identification tag, along with a photo of your pet will help ensure their safe return. Attach a temporary ID tag to your pet’s collar in addition to their permanent tag. Include the address and phone number of where you’ll be staying along with your cell phone number and perhaps your email address. This is one of the most important aspects of traveling with your pet, but also one of the most overlooked. In addition, bring along a current photo of your pet. A photograph will make it easier for others to help you find your lost pet. Packing Essentials: When packing for your pet include an ample supply of your pet’s food. Don’t rely on stopping along the way to pick up their food or picking it up at your final destination. Their particular brand of food may not be readily available and it is not advisable to introduce your pet to a new brand of food while traveling. Other essentials to pack for your pet include collapsible travel food

and water bowls, bedding, litter and litter box, leash, collar and tags, favorite toys, grooming supplies, a pet first-aid kit and any necessary medications. And of course, be sure to always have an ample

LEARNING ABOUT FIRE SAFETY - The Bay Shore Schools/Great South Bay YMCA UPK program at Mary G. Clarkson School celebrated Fire Safety by having firefighters from the Bay Shore Fire Department come and visit with students. The firefighters taught the children about fire safety and the importance of knowing to “Stop, Drop and Roll.” Students also had the opportunity to sit inside a fire truck and see all of its equipment. The Bay Shore Fire Department’s visit was a wonderful experience for all the students.

In addition to learning about the evolution of and changes within Hispanic music, students learned about Mr. Peña’s life journey, one that took him from studying Math and Business at Cornell University to following his passion for dance and becoming a U.S. Bachata champion, Salsa runner-up and opening his own dance studio.

Students were treated to a performance by the two dancers and the presentation concluded with students being invited on stage to learn basic Salsa and Bachata steps. This special assembly was coordinated by Bay Shore Middle School Spanish teacher Wendy Mercado, with special help from Viki Zimolka, and was sponsored by the Bay Shore Schools Arts Education Fund.

The Bay Shore Lions Club is presently collecting food items to help stock local food pantry shelves. There are currently THREE drop-off points for nonperishables: Wines on Main on Main Street, Meg Smith Realty and Associates on Main Street, and Variety Florist on Second Avenue. If anyone would like to aid in the

compilation of 30+ food baskets for local families, please go to one of these three locations between now and November 24th. Also, The Bay Shore Lions Club will be adopting 10 families for the holidays this year, as well as supporting a program called Tidings for Tweens. Many thanks to The Bay Shore Lions for all they do

to help Bay Shore residents who are less fortunate. For more information about The Bay Shore Lions or how to make a donation, please contact their President, Heather at Variety Florist at 631.666.8287, or go online to www.bayshorelions. org.

CARE PACKAGE CONTRIBUTIONS - To honor Veterans Day and assist Girl Scout Troop #222, Mary G. Clarkson students and families contributed to care packages for military troops stationed overseas. Numerous items were collected during the donation drive, including toothbrushes, chapstick, cotton swabs and playing cards. In a display of true community spirit, The Bay Shore Lions Club picked up the items and will pack and ship them to our brave troops serving around the world.

KIDS HELPING KIDS - South Country School students recently participated in the annual tradition of Kids Helping Kids® by collecting donations totaling $801.63 for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF 2013. These kindhearted students made the world a better place by helping to provide countless children around the world with clean water, nutrition, medicine, immunizations and education. Students from Mrs. Carino’s 4th and 5th grade class organized this event. Kids truly do have the power to change the world.

Take along ice cubes, which are easier on your pet than large amounts of water. Watch the Food Intake: It is recommended that you keep feeding to a minimum during travel. Be sure to feed them their regular pet food and resist the temptation to give them some of your fast food burger or fries (that never has a good ending!). Don’t Leave Them Alone: Never leave your pet unattended in a parked vehicle. On warm days, the temperature in your vehicle can rise to 120 degrees in minutes, even with the windows slightly open. In addition,

an animal left alone in a vehicle is an open invitation to pet thieves. Practice Restraint: Be sure that your pet is safely restrained in your vehicle. Utilizing a pet safety harness, travel kennel, vehicle pet barrier, or pet car seat are the best ways to keep your pet safe. They not only protect your pet from injury, but they help by keeping them from distracting you as you drive. A safety harness functions like a seatbelt. While most pets will not have a problem adjusting to it, you may want to let them wear the harness by itself a few times before using it in the vehicle. If

your pet prefers a travel kennel, be sure it is well ventilated and stabilized. Many pet owners prefer vehicle barriers, particularly for larger pets. Vehicle barriers are best suited for SUVs. Smaller pets are best suited for pet car seats. The car seat is secured in the back seat using a seat belt and your pet is secured in the car seat with a safety harness. In addition to it’s safety features, a pet car seat will prop up your smaller pet, allowing them to better look out the window. No matter what method you choose, back seat travel is always safer for your pet. Safe and Comfortable:

631.363.5193. H.E.A.L. (Help Ease A Loss) will meet on Tuesday nights at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, Brooksite Drive in Smithtown, at 7:30 p.m. For information, contact 631.265.2810. The Farmingdale Rotary will host lunch meetings every Wednesday at Palmer’s American Grille, 123 Fulton Street in Farmingdale, at 12:30 p.m. Long Island Leads, a new business networking group, will meet on Thursday mornings at the Atlantis Diner, 350 Montauk Highway in West Islip, from 7 to 8:30 a.m. For information, contact 631.376.1414. The Rotary Club of SmithtownSunrise will meet every Thursday at the SmithtownMillennium Diner, corner of Main Street and Route 111, at 7:45 a.m. For information, visit www.smithtownsunriserotary. com. The Compassionate Friends will meet the second Friday of each month at St. Sylvester’s Church, at 7:30 p.m. For information, contact 631.738.0809. A Silver Sneakers Exercise class for all levels will be held Monday through Saturday at locations in Garden City, Roslyn and Greak Neck. For information, contact 516.745.8050.

Thanksgiving Travel Tips - With Pets Continued From 11 along with your vet’s contact information should they be needed for consultation. Hitting The Road No Heads Out the Window: Although many pets find that sticking their head out the window is the best part of the road trip, it’s not safe. Your pet can easily be injured by flying debris. This should go without saying, but NEVER travel with a pet in the back of a pickup truck. Some states have laws restricting such transport and it is always dangerous. Frequent Pit Stops: Always provide frequent

bathroom and exercise breaks. Most travel service areas have designated areas for walking your pet. Be sure to stay in this area particularly when you pet needs a potty break, and of course, bring along a bag to pick up after your pet. When outside your vehicle, make sure that your pet is always on a leash and wearing a collar with a permanent and temporary travel identification tag. Proper Hydration: During your pit stops be sure to provide your pet with some fresh water to wet their whistle. Occasionally traveling can upset your pet’s stomach.

Whatever method you choose to properly restrain your pet in your vehicle, be sure to make their comfort a priority. Just as it’s important for your “seat” to be comfortable for your long road trip, your pet’s seat should be comfortable too. Typically their favorite blanket or travel bed will do the trick. There are also some safe and very cozy pet car seats available that your pet may find quite comfy. Careful preparation is the key to ensuring that you and your pet have a happy and safe trip.

Legislative Welcome

Recently, Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County

Legislature, and Legislator Lynne Nowick honored former New York Jet Marty Lyons at

a meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, on the occasion of his induction to the New

Yorks Jets Ring of Honor. Mr. Lyons, one-fourth of the feared front four of the 1980’s Jet teams, known as the New York Sack Exchange was known for his hard work and ferocity on the field, but maybe is better known for his kindly and charitable ways off the field. While with the Jets, Mr. Lyons started the Marty Lyons Foundation, helping give wishes to terminally ill children between the ages of three and 17. It was because of this work with his foundation that Mr. Lyons won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award and the Heisman Humanitarian Award.

This year, the Jets inducted Mr. Lyons into the New York Jets Ring of Honor at Metlife Stadium during a ceremony featuring past honorees, and former teammates of Mr. Lyons. “Besides being a national champion at the University of Alabama, an 11-year veteran with the New York Jets, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, a successful businessman and broadcaster, it is Mr. Lyons ‘s work with the community right here in Suffolk County that is his biggest accomplishment,” said Legislator Kennedy. For more information on the Marty Lyons Foundation,

please visit www. martylyonsfoundation. org or please feel free to contact my office at 631.854.3735.

Peridontal Health (NAPSA)-Taking good care of your periodontal health involves daily toothbrushing and flossing, plus a yearly periodontal evaluation. A dental professional, such as a periodontist-a specialist in the treatment and prevention of gum disease -can conduct the exam. To learn more, visit www.perio.org.

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano is proud to announce that the Long Island International Film Expo (LIIFE) has just been named one of the 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the world by MovieMaker Magazine. MovieMaker Magazine has featured the Long Island International Film Expo in their Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals of 2013. This year the winners were chosen by the readers of MovieMaker Magazine based on their own personal experiences and opinions. To view the full list of winners and nominees visit, www. moviemaker.com “The Long Island International Film Expo is yet another way we market and promote Nassau County as a filming destination,” said County Executive

Mangano. “By having filmmakers from all over the globe attend, we are able to show them available filming sites as well as generate dollars for our local economy.” LIIFE will be held from July 9th through 17th, 2014 at the Bellmore Movies and will include screenings of hundreds of short and featurelength independent films as well as documentaries, animations, student films, and music videos. There are informative and entertaining panels with industry experts, celebrities in attendance, parties, filmmaker Q & As, and plenty of networking opportunities for those in the industry or film enthusiasts in general. couldn’t sleep at night and had a lot of trouble breathing. My cardiologist told me I had a leaky heart valve and sent me to Southside Hospital. An echocardiogram revealed I didn’t have just one failing heart valve—but three! After talking with my surgeon for hours, he really put my mind at ease. It’s been just a few months since my operation, and I’m already feeling better and visiting my grandkids again.”

An extremely complex and challenging procedure. A highly-specialized cardiac team repaired and replaced Clyde’s three failing heart valves in just one operation—an extremely complex and challenging procedure. It’s a true testament to the expertise of our cardiac team at Southside where innovative procedures are performed on a daily basis.
