The Skin Cancer Foundation wants parents and caregivers to know that skin cancer is highly preventable and offers the

following tips to help keep young children sun-safe for the rest of the summer and all year long: Seek Shade. Avoid direct sun exposure during peak sun hours, between 10 AM and 4 PM, and use an umbrella while on the beach. On walks, keep to the shady side of the street and use a sun shield on your stroller.

Like UVB rays, UVA rays damage DNA and can lead to skin cancer.

By law, front windshields are treated to filter out most UVA, but side and rear windows generally aren’t. Consider buying a UV shield, which you can hang over any window that allows sunlight to reach the child’s car seat.

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation.

This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island.

The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College.

Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.

Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 2 sessions will be on August 20th and 27th.

Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. If you are still interested in attending any of these events, please email thesocialbrainny@ gmail.com or call 631.793.4311 for more information.

Additionally, in only two days (on August 16th), The Social Brain will host a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association at 6:30PM! This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate.

Nick Galanis is a Long Island Area Developer for Orangetheory Fitness. This new Farmingdale studio, located at 253 Airport Plaza Blvd in Farmingdale, is the 10th OTF studio that he operates. Nick found his lifelong passion for health and fitness when he enlisted in the Marines and working out became his daily escape.

At Orangetheory Fitness all of the classes offered are an hour long and are in a group setting. No two classes are alike and members don’t know which kind of class they will be walking into before they arrive.

Their coaches are skilled and work with each member of the group to keep them motivated, positive and in the correct form for the workout they are doing. Their classes are designed for people of all fitness levels and members can work out at their own pace. If you are recovering from an injury or orthopedic issue and need

special guidance there is no reason to worry, just tell your coach. They have options for every exercise.

One of the most unique parts of OTF is that all members can track their results. Members get hooked up to a heart rate monitor upon arrival to a class and its technology not only measures your heart rate,

but it gathers performance data as well. The workout equipment at each studio is state of the art and the environment is truly unique.

The following various membership opportunities are available: Basic Membership, which allows you to sign up for 4 classes/month; Elite Membership, which allows you to sign up for 8 classes/month and Premier Membership, which allows you to sign up for an unlimited amount of classes each month.
