Inspiration. It can come from anywhere. A song. A movie. A book. A beautiful sunset. A peaceful walk along the shoreline. Anywhere. As I sit here on yet another deadline day, scrambling to finish the last of my work for the week, I am in search of some of that inspiration for my column. Last week’s article drew perhaps some of the greatest attention on the social media circuit, as I was pleasantly surprised by numerous “likes,” “comments” and “shares” from those supporters who follow my page on

Facebook (see above). It’s amazing how a little positive feedback can provide that much-needed affirmation that, yes, you are doing something worthwhile that people appreciate. And, on that note, I do appreciate the support of you, the readers. Without an audience, words are merely diary entries, notes to self never meant to see the light of day. But with interaction, and reaction, they take on new life. Of course, it helps to actually get out from behind the desk and live life from time to time too. How else can you expect to experience

those glorious sunsets and shorelines? And summer is indeed the perfect time for all of the above. Work hard to play hard, right? Well this is the season to take those vacation days, even if it’s only to catch up on your reading or start watching a new TV series. For those more adventurous among us, take a trip to NYC, or Fire Island, or Montauk… pick a direction, and just go. Make it your mission this summer to find the inspiration that has been missing from your life. And once you find it – write about it, take pictures of it, find some new way to capture it… and savor it.

Beautiﬁcation Luncheon The annual Bay Shore Beautification Society Luncheon, entitled “Put On Your Dancin’ Shoes,” was held on Tuesday, June 19th, at Captain Bill’s Bay View House on the Great South Bay. Entertainment was provided by the Red Hot Mamas, an energetic professional tap company comprised of senior women between the ages of 54 and 89 who have been kicking up their heels in the New York area for 20 years. Directed by Louise Rastu and Toni Wortman, their repertoire includes selections from Broadway shows, old time favorites

and modern and popular music. Each number featured spectacular costumes, and when the audience was invited to learn a dance with the “Mamas,” over 40 enthusiastic guests crowded the dance floor. Several guests wanted to know, “How can we start a group like this in Bay Shore?” The luncheon also featured raffles for over 125 different prizes (donated by local merchants), a 5050 raffle, a trivia contest and an auction for a year’s worth of flowers donated by Beebe’s Florist. Event Coordinators Judy Edelstein and Sue

Boudreau were assisted by Jeanne Michel, Mary Louise Cohen, Pat Perricone and Sean Collins. The Beautification Society is a subcommittee of the Bay Shore-

Brightwaters Summit Council and has been in existence for over 19 years. All funds raised at the luncheon will be used for programs to beautify Bay Shore.

Youth Center Donation Local Sports Training Center BCBA, which operates from the Westbrook Elementary School at 350 Higbie Lane, received a $10,000 donation from an anonymous supporter. BCBA is an all volunteer non-profit Youth Organization that has been serving the greater Long Island Community since 2004. The center provides young people with a clean, safe and structured

environment that offers a variety of sport and fitness programs. All their programs are designed to combat childhood obesity, increase emotional steadiness and build selfconfidence. The donation could not have come at a better time. BCBA, like so many others on the South Shore, was devastated by Super Storm Sandy. “It has been a tremendous struggle these

past two years. After Sandy I seriously considered closing our doors due to lack of funds and my own personal rebuilding struggles. But I knew if I closed BCBA the kids we service would be the ones who suffered the most. As a Boxing Coach I am always teaching kids the importance of finding a way, dusting yourself off and getting up when life knocks you down, so throwing in the towel on

BCBA was not the answer,” said Ray Bettinelli, Head Boxing Coach and Director of Operations for BCBA. Since relocating to West Islip, BCBA has introduced a host of additional programs for its youth.
