The Greater Long Island Running Club is pleased to announce that the 2017 Herb Grayson Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Emma Mangels of Bay Shore High School.

This scholarship is awarded

by GLIRC annually to a graduating Long Island senior who has demonstrated dedicated service to the Long Island running community.

Mangels accepted her award, a $2,000 check, at the GLIRC General Meeting on June 20 at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library.

was a committed member of the school’s track team, and in her senior year was recognized as a Suffolk County Academic All-County runner.

Mangels’ exemplary initiative made her stand out amongst the dozen of scholarship applicants.

In her junior year, the student-athlete organized a 5-Kilometer Run to support the fight against Epidermolysis Bullosa, a rare skin disease her cousin suffers from. In her scholarship application essay, Mangels reflected on the undertaking involved in creating a grassroots event – she dealt with everything

Students from Mrs. Crosby’s ENL class at Brook Avenue School discovered that writing is powerful when they received a response back from a Supreme Court Justice. The students were learning about the genre of biographies and were particularly surprised to

Crosby took the lead from her students and changed her lesson plan from the genre study of biographies to letter writing.

In their letters, they asked questions and commented on their aspirations that ranged from the status of her health to wanting to become a judge. The students also illustrated their favorite part of the book and drew selfportraits that accompanied their letters.

During a morning announcement, students were pleasantly surprised to learn that Justice Sonia Sotomayor had individually responded to their letters and sent a personalized autograph to each of them. The students were called down to the principal’s office and were presented with their letters

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent.

Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease.

Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease.

That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

INTERNATIONAL NIGHT - Recently, the families at Fifth Avenue School came together for International Night. Students marched in a parade wearing traditional clothing and carrying flags from many different countries. What a great way to learn about different parts of the world!

DAY AT THE MUSEUM - Brook Avenue School scholars set off on an exploration of the Museum of Natural History and extended their learning about animals, dinosaurs and rocks and minerals. They held the tooth of T-rex and explored gems from around the world. The views were beautiful going and coming across the bridges into Manhattan.

Students loved seeing the skyline. What better way to make curriculum come alive for our scholars, than a trip to the museum. A great day was had by all!

PROCLAMATION PRESENTED - Recently, Legislator Barraga presented Kayla Christie from Bay Shore, NY with a proclamation in recognition for obtaining the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County’s Gold Award, the highest honor one can achieve in Girl Scouting. To earn this award, young women must exemplify the values of leadership, character, and service that are at the heart of Girl Scouts. Kayla’s project was to build memorial benches at the Atlantique Marina for people to come to reflect and remember their loved ones who have passed away.

IT’S MAGNETIC - Do you know which materials are magnetic and which are nonmagnetic? The students at South Country School can tell you! The students participated in Magnets to Go. Magnets to Go is a program through Brookhaven National Labs that helps fourth graders learn about magnetism and electricity.

WEEKEND LEARNING - Bay Shore students had a great time learning on the weekends this spring. Many elementary-level students took part in the SCOPE Saturday Enrichment Program, which allowed them to dive deeper into scientific topics. They learned about how art and science can intersect, computer programming, SAVING ENERGY - Gardiner Manor School scholars learned about electricity by crime scene investigation, engineering and many other topics. What a great way to engaging with Nicki Neutron, a character played by actress Katie from the National Theater for children, a program provided by PSEG. Students enjoyed the show while spend a Saturday! learning how to conserve energy. We continue to be energy conscious at Gardiner Manor!

On May 15th, the faculty of Mary G. Clarkson School eagerly opened the doors to invite the community to explore the artistic and scientific works of our students. As in past years, from the moment you entered the doors each of your senses were immediately bombarded with unending displays of classroom projects representing the content areas of ELA, math, science

and social studies.

This year’s theme of Reaching For The Stars, presented in the gymnasium, brought us a life-sized spaceship that was so cool you just had to take a picture in it. Mr. Kevin Carroll, Mary G. Clarkson’s new art teacher, emphasizes combining literature, science and art to encourage learning for his students.

The impressive feature

about this annual display is that the kindergarten, first, and second graders of Mary G. Clarkson create every artistic item. Finally, we also thank all of our parents who participated in the Science Fair by helping their children craft their special projects.
