Usdan University is offered year after year by popular demand, and it was created to respond to friends of the Center, Usdan alumni and parents of students saying “What about something for me, too?” or “I want to relive the Usdan experience,” or “Be 13 again.” Participants often come from distant states as well as the TriState Area.

The day begins with a wide variety of arts classes, including (besides Organic Gardening and Cooking): Digital Photography (composition and presentation of Macintosh computers); Painting (acrylics and/or pastels); Hand building ceramics, Potter’s wheel ceramics (ceramics students may leave their pieces for firing, and pick them up later in the summer); Broadway

jazz dance (some background suggested); Musical Theater (acting, speech, movement, voice, theatrical expression and improvisation. (No prerequisite).

The morning classes are followed by a gourmet lunch, catered by Long Island’s Suburban Eats, and a concert in the onsite, 1,000-seat McKinley Ampitheater, followed by afternoon recreation, which can include Chorus, Nature Walk, Archery or a campus tour. There will also be an optional swim in Usdan’s Olympic-sized pools, from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m.

The “students” in performance classes sometimes (without pressure or requirement!) take the stage in the Center’s Ampitheate to demonstrate their morning’s work.

And at the end of the day, everyone gets ice cream (a Usdan tradition) and even a diploma!

You need to remember how, on those days, you felt all warm inside, like you’ve just drunk a hot cup of tea, like a small fire has ignited inside of you. Hold on to the warmth and never let it go.

My eyes landed upon these words as I scanned through all the usual mundane drivel one tends to come across on Facebook, shared by one of my friends, and many before

her, from one of those sites which tend to cull such inspirational quotes and sayings. I did attempt to look up the original source, but to no avail; such is the gift and curse of the Internet, I suppose.

In any case, whomever thought to put such eloquent words to a concept we all preach but seldom seem to practice – bravo! It is, essentially, just a rewording of the tried and true cliché to appreciate each and every day, to live life to the fullest, to know that “however good or bad a situation is, it will change” (yet another of those “famous” unattributed sayings).

But, sometimes, we do need to be reminded. All

situations require appropriate perspective, something we often lack in the heat of the moment. And the happy times? Well they tend to get lost in the shuffle, swept aside in favor of dwelling on those days that didn’t go quite according to plan. I think that’s why I love photography so much. Memories are priceless, to be sure; but there is something truly precious – and irreplaceable – about capturing that instant of happiness forever.

These are the days to remember, ‘cause they will not last forever… so said one of Long Island’s finest songwriters, Billy Joel. Best to store them away for a rainy day – or, in my case, snap a photo for posterity.

Grant Challenge Champs The Gold Coast Arts Center is thrilled to announce that their previously reported challenge grant goal posed by the Harvey and Gloria Kaylie Foundation - which stated that if the center could raise $30,000 by June 15th, the foundation would match it - has been achieved and surpassed!

The Gold Coast Arts Center is a 501(c)(3) organization that has been dedicated to promoting and supporting the arts through education, exhibition, performance and outreach on Long Island for over 20 years.

The Center is concerned that their widely successful “ARTreach” program is in danger of being cut back due to budget constraints, which would affect hundreds of Long Island and New York students

who currently benefit from the programming.

Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) has announced that Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident and a physical education teacher, will lead a team of swimmers in the 11th Annual Distant Memories Swim on Wednesday, July 23rd, in order to draw attention to this devastating disease that impacts over 60,000 families here on Long Island. In its lifetime, The Swim has raised in excess of $100,000 for those with Alzheimer’s Disease and their unpaid caregivers.

Opening ceremonies are expected to begin promptly at 9 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will take to the water at 9:30 a.m.

Mr. Proctor and his teammates will start out at Asharoken Beach and swim across the bay to Knollwood Beach — a distance of approximately 2.5 nautical miles (less than 3 miles). The swim will also help raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. through sponsorships and corporate donors. The goal is to raise $20,000 to

help support services and programs for Long Island families coping with the challenges of Alzheimer’s Disease.

This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease.

“Bryan is a champion for those with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease. He is a role model for the youth of our country,” states Mary Ann MalackRagona, Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. “He has continuously expressed the sentiment that he wants to raise awareness about this deadly disease and help families who live on Long Island.”

“It is my hope that substantial funds will be raised to assist Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center in providing for people with dementia and other related disorders,” Mr. Proctor said.

Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center — which is headquartered in Bay Shore and has

a satellite office in Southampton — is the only local Alzheimer’s Disease advocacy and educational facility whose mission is to provide hands-on support and services to families on Long Island and the New York metropolitan area. ADRC works with family members, health care professionals and researchers to ensure quality health care and support to those impacted by Alzheimer’s Disease through care and consultation, information and referral, training, support groups, and caregiver safety products.

The Islip Town Board voted recently on four resolutions that would enable several downtown areas in Islip Town to receive grant funding. The downtown portions of Bay Shore, Islip Terrace, Islip, and Holbrook will each be awarded grant funding in varying amounts, which will be used to help make our downtowns more attractive to shoppers and businesses alike. As part of Suffolk County’s Downtown Revitalization Program the Town and the County will contribute equal shares to each hamlet to help pay for the desired projects, as decided upon by the local Chambers of Commerce.

“Healthy downtown areas provide an economic boost that simply can’t be attained through other means, and so

the Town is proud to administer these funds to our local Chambers,” said Councilman Steve Flotteron. “The jobs and atmosphere provided by thriving downtown businesses is an essential part of Islip Town’s character.

Everyone benefits when our downtowns succeed.”

Bay Shore is set to receive $30,000 from both the Town and the County, which will be allocated toward street lighting and sidewalk improvement on the east side of Third Avenue, between Union Boulevard and Mechanicsville Road.

In Islip Terrace, portions of Carleton Avenue between Andrew Avenue and Fisher Avenue will benefit from $35,750 from both the Town and the County. The funds

will be used to improve sidewalks, drainage, curbing, and other projects that will improve the local walkways.

Islip Hamlet’s grant funding will total $70,000; $35,000 each from the Town and County. The municipal parking lot will receive improvements and upgrades to its curbing and lighting, which will benefit shoppers and restaurant patrons.

Holbrook’s downtown area will receive the largest of the four grants, with both the Town and County each contributing $80,000 toward the repair and improvement of the walkways near the intersection of Main Street and Furrows Road.

Additional lighting will also be installed to improve pedestrian safety in this heavily-trafficked area.

Dedication Ceremony

Casamento passed away in 1987.

In recent months a local resident, Arnold Merkitch, felt that Mr. Casamento’s legacy wasn’t properly appreciated. He approached the Town, and a plan was set in motion to renovate the signage outside Casamento Park and the memorial near the parking lot. Emblems of the U.S. Medal of Honor are now visible on the new sign, along with a short description, to highlight Mr. Casamento’s legacy in the West Islip Community.

“Anthony Casamento deserves every recognition that the Town can bestow,

and his memory should be appreciated by everyone in Islip,” said Councilman Flotteron.

Representatives of the Marine Corps League and the Sons of Italy were on hand to pay tribute to Mr. Casamento. The Sons of Italy were especially instrumental in getting Mr. Casamento’s achievements recognized by the U.S. government. The West Islip Library loaned the actual Medal of Honor received

by Mr. Casamento, whose family bestowed the medal to the library upon his passing, for presentation during the ceremony.

Scholarships Presented the Long Island Cancer Help and Wellness Center at 32 Park Avenue in Bay Shore. Through a series of free non-medical services including exercise classes, art therapy, and massage, the Center provides cancer survivors with support to overcome the challenges of a cancer diagnosis.

This past October, Paige formed a team for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk and raised more than $10,000 for breast cancer research in honor of her mother, Karen, who had just lost her battle with the disease.

This experience has made Paige determined to work toward finding a cure for breast cancer, and she is enrolled in Stony Brook

University’s Physician Assistant Program. “I do not want breast cancer to define my life,” said Paige.

“As my mother always encouraged, I am going to seize every opportunity to make a difference in the world.”
