ast month, Bay Shore’s Gardiner Manor School held its 14th Annual Circus. Each year, the Gardiner Manor Circus proudly features every fifth grader in this one-of-a-kind show. Students sign up to be clowns, stilt walkers, unicycle riders, devil stickers, diabolos, pep squad dancers, jugglers, jump ropers, plate spinners, acrobats or part of the backstage crew. This year’s show was simply outstanding.

Black History Awards In honor of Black History Month, the Town of Islip honored five extraordinary individuals in a special ceremony held on Tuesday, February 11th at the Town Hall Board Room in Islip.

Bay Shore Schools enjoyed a wonderful showing at the event, as current district employees constituted two of the five honorees while a third, Reynard Burns, represented Bay Shore as a

Michael Brown began coaching Pee Wee football when he was 18 years old. His love of the sport led him to coaching for the Bay Shore School District in 2005, while he worked as a security guard for the Bellport School District. His work as a Bay Shore demonstrated his

commitment to excellence and the children of the community and led to a smooth transition when Mr. Brown began working for the District as a security guard in 2010.

Mr. Brown mentors the young men who play for him. His message to each one is clear: “You can do it!” Building confidence and encouraging children to do their best is what Mr. Brown does best. Mr. Brown also volunteers in the community as a football coach and is always giving to others. During the holiday season, Mr. Brown has his team give back to the community, too, by participating in Stuff-A-Bus at Bay Shore High School and raising money for the Judy Shesh Foundation.

Continued From 6 Lisette graduated from Hempstead High School at the age of 16, completed her BA in three years at NYU’s School of Education and received her graduate degree from Hofstra University. In addition to her certification to teach Social Studies grades 7-12, Lisette has obtained her Education Administration licenses on both the school and district levels. Over the years, she has been involved in numerous activities: as an adviser for the B.S.O.S.S

Club, the co-creator of Bay Shore High School’s annual Black History Month Celebration, and as the creator of an elective course entitled “Latin America and the Caribbean”. Ms. Lors’ zeal to teach stems from her desire to improve the lives of children. She believes that every child deserves a quality education regardless of their race or socioeconomic circumstances.

She believes that with patience and perseverance all things are possible.

Random Thoughts By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As if navigating the roads this winter wasn’t hazardous enough with the snow and ice and freezing rain, we now have a new obstacle to contend with – the vast wasteland of potholes cropping up on every corner and parkway ramp. Try attempting to slow down as your headlights catch a glimpse of the crater before you, just waiting to devour a tire or two. One more time – is it spring yet?

At least spring training has finally arrived, and with it the not entirely unexpected announcement

from Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter that this season will be his final year playing baseball. A class act until the end, Jeter took to his Facebook page to write a heartfelt message of thanks and appreciation to his fans, his teammates, his family and friends.

He will leave the Yankees at the top of his game, a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer with a legacy the likes of which will not be seen again.

Speaking of, remember all those long lost friends you thought you would never see again? Well, thanks to social networking, virtual reunions have become fairly

common. Sure, there’s plenty of useless material to navigate through; but if you learn to utilize these sites properly, the odds of reconnecting with someone are pretty likely. Everything in moderation, right?

That’s the mentality you need to adopt for spring – moderation – with diet, exercise, everything. Those bathing suits that have been cropping up in every department store? Making Your Mark Cablevision is seeking high school students to participate in the Smithsonian Channel’s Make Your Mark contest, an opportunity to win money for a school or community project.

In honor of Black History Month, students can submit a video idea, or mark, that will leave a lasting impression on their community or school.

The Smithsonian

Channel project grows out of the documentary Breath of Freedom, which tells the story of African-American soldiers who returned from World War II and made their mark by taking up the civil rights struggle in the United States.

Students are invited to watch the documentary and then record a video that showcases an idea on how a school or community could benefit

from the winning $2,500 entry.

“Students who participate in this contest will benefit not only from the experience of making the video, but also from learning more about an extremely important piece of American history,” Suffolk County Steve Bellone said. “We encourage all students to pursue this opportunity and help their school or

Catholic Schools Celebration The week of January 26th, Saint Patrick School celebrated Catholic Schools Week.

The theme for the National Catholic Schools week 2014 is Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.

Throughout the week, Saint Patrick School

conducted a variety of special events and activities. The week started off with a family mass and open house on Sunday, January 25th.

All were welcome to come visit the school and meet the faculty and staff.

Some of the highlights of the week were the teachers

ESPN Honoree Black History Honorees

Congratulations to Bay Shore High School Senior Ryan Mazzie on being selected by ESPN as their December honoree and one of only five MVP Finalists for their $5,000 scholarship prize.

Ryan is the quintessential student athlete, excelling both on the athletic field and in the classroom where he boasts a 101.55 GPA, is ranked 4th in his class of 417 students, and is an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate. In 9th grade, Ryan also donated his bone marrow to help save his younger sister, Melina, who was battling a rare form of aplastic anemia.

In Ryan’s first Varsity football game, he threw six touchdown passes, breaking an 86-year-old school record. He has

continued to stand out on the gridiron as Bay Shore’s starting quarterback/team captain and has broken several other school records. As a Senior, Ryan was named 1st Team AllDivision and started at quarterback in the Suffolk County All-Star Game. On the baseball diamond, Ryan is a left-handed pitcher/ first baseman and serves as a threat in the heart of the batting order. As a Junior, Ryan led the team in home runs, tied for the team lead in RBI’s and posted a .408 batting average, earning him All-League honors at season’s end. Ryan was also recognized as the 201314 NYSAHPERD Suffolk Zone Award male student recipient for Bay Shore High School and he and his family were featured on an MSG Varsity segment

this past fall. I n school, Mazzie serves as Senior Class Treasurer, as a member of Athletes Helping Athletes and as Sports Editor of his award-winning high school newspaper (Best on Long Island). Ryan plans on playing baseball at the collegiate level while pursuing a degree in Finance. Many thanks go out to his football coach, Mike Brown, and his Guidance Counselor, Jamie Ehlers, for all their help and support during the nomination process.

March is the 31st Annual National Eye Donor Awareness month. Since 1961, more than one million adults and children have had their sight restored as a result of eye donations, according to the Eye Bank Association of America. The Lions Eye Bank for Long Island, which is located at Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream and serves the New York metropolitan area, has provided the gift of
