Project 9 Line www.project9line.org Project 9 Line is a nonprofit organization that was formed in 2014 by Patrick Donohue, an Army combat veteran.

Their focus is to bridge T the communication JEC gap between PRO veterans and civilians.

Through outreach, communication and purpose, they enable veterans to express themselves uniquely through forms of art.

ST. MARK’S EPISCOPAL CHRISTMAS BAZAAR - Fully decorated Christmas trees are just one of the things that buyers can grab up at the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Christmas Bazaar! Here, some of the ECW (Episcopal Church Women) members got together to decorate them. The Christmas bazaar will be held Saturday, December 4 from 10 AM-3 PM. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church is located at 754 Montauk Highway (across from the Oconee Diner), Islip, NY. Bazaar will be held at The Gathering Place in the church building at the end of the driveway. ECW also supports the church upgrades, such as helping with the cost of an air scrubber system, so vital in keeping the church open during these Covid times. The Christmas bazaar was started almost 45 years ago by the late Helen Selgrad.

November is National Adoption Awareness Month

Edward Di Gangi is an adoptee and lives with his wife, Linda, in Hillsborough, North Carolina. He is the author of The Gift Best Given: A Memoir which recounts the story of his search for the woman who placed him for adoption at the time of his birth and the surprising discoveries he made during his journey. Originating in 1976 when then Massachusetts Governor, Michael Dukakis, declared the first week of November Adoption Week in the state, it was then formally recognized in 1984 when President Gerald Ford signed a proclamation declaring it National Adoption Week. To further increase adoption awareness, in 1995 President Bill Clinton expanded the week to the full month of November, and beginning in 2000, the Saturday before Thanksgiving was declared National Adoption Day. Today, it’s estimated that seven million Americans are adoptees and that one hundred million have direct experience with adoption in their immediate family either having adopted or placed a child for adoption or being an adoptee themselves.

While the purpose of National Adoption Month and National Adoption Day is to draw attention to the importance of all adoption-related issues, 2021’s focus is on the critical issues surrounding the adoption of children in foster care.

Numbers vary by source, but it’s generally agreed that there are over 400,000 children currently in foster care in the United States (as of 2019, 16,000 of them were in New York

State). The average age of those children is eight years and there are slightly more boys in foster care than girls. While approximately half of them will ultimately be returned to one or both of their parents or to a caregiver, another twentyfive percent find adoptive homes, typically with their foster parents. At any given point in time, however, an additional one-hundred-and-twenty-thousand foster children are in situations where they cannot be returned to their families and are therefore awaiting adoption.

Again, statistics vary somewhat, but it’s agreed that the longer a child remains in care awaiting adoption, the less “attractive” they become to potential parents. While the average time for a child to be in foster care is somewhat over one year, it’s estimated that as many as sixty percent of these children remain in foster care from two to five years and that twenty percent may remain in foster care for more than five years. Roughly twenty thousand of them, depending on the state in which they’re being cared for, “age out” of foster care, having reached the age of eighteen or twenty-one years without having been adopted.

Bay Shore Teachers Receive Recognition

On Wednesday, October 20, 2021, three Bay Shore School District teachers were recognized by Assemblyman Phil Ramos, Chancellor Lester Young, and Regent Roger Tilles. Brook Avenue School teacher Lynne Sypher, Bay Shore Middle School teacher Natasha Payne-Yarborough, and Bay Shore High School guidance counselor Viki Zimolka were honored for their dedication to their students.

Shore graduate, has taught kindergarten at Brook Avenue School for 38 years, and has also worked hard to mentor teachers new to the profession. Mrs. PayneYarborough has taught English at Bay Shore Middle School for 24 years, in addition to working with numerous clubs and helping to instill the importance of community service in students. Mrs. Zimolka has been a guidance counselor in the District for 19 years and

tirelessly works to provide college admissions support while also addressing the personal needs of students and their families.

Superintendent Dr. Steven Maloney, along with many Bay Shore administrators and teachers, attended the event to congratulate these outstanding educators who truly represent the best of Bay Shore.

“2020 was a recordbreaking year for the turkey drive,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “We hope Long Islanders continue to show their support again this year as the need on Long Island is still great. We’ve also taken all necessary safety precautions with the contactless drive-through donation drop-off so everyone should feel very safe.”

The Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit the Island Harvest Food Bank will take place on Friday, November 19, 2021, from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The 13th annual food drive will include a no-contact donation car drive-through which will enable community residents to remain in their cars while volunteers remove donations from the vehicles.

Long Islanders are asked to donate frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items or cash donations.

These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island.

Non-perishable food items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices, and shelf-stable milk (please, no glass containers).
