Federation of Organizations honored volunteers from its Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs this past June at Stonebridge Country Club in Smithtown, New York. More than 250 guests attended The Senior Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, held annually to recognize dedicated seniors making a difference in the lives of children with special needs as well as homebound seniors. During the event, emceed by News 12’s Doug Geed, Federation’s Chief Executive Officer, Barbara Faron, presented Chief Operating Officer Philip Matcovsky as the organization’s “Man of the Year,” for 30 years of outstanding service. Matcovsky joined Federation in 1987 as a counselor in the homeless outreach program before moving up the ranks to become a supervisor, director and Chief Operating Officer. As COO, Matcovsky has been instrumental in helping Federation and its 500 employees navigate major changes to managed care, while managing day-to-day
operations of an agency with a $48 million budget. He continues to strive for the best possible care for Long Island seniors, as well as individuals who are homeless or living with mental health challenges. Federation’s Senior Director of Outreach Services, Tracy Falkner, LMSW, awarded Volunteer of the Year Awards to Foster Grandparent Jeanette Ingenito and Senior Companion Lucy Caracciola for their exemplary care and service. The agency’s 140 Foster Grandparents currently mentor more than 2,500 children in Suffolk County, while Federation’s Senior Companion Program provides support and assistance to frail homebound seniors. Senator Phil Boyle (NYS 4th Senate District) and Ed Romaine, Town of Brookhaven Supervisor, served as Guest Speakers at the event, commending Federation’s volunteers for their efforts to enhance the quality of life of Long Island children and seniors. Other notable attendees included New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre (Assembly
District 11) and Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi, who represents the Tenth Legislative District of New York. Representatives from Senator John E. Brooks’ office (NYS 8th Senate District) and Tom Croci’s office (NYS 3rd Senate District) were also in attendance. Generous event sponsors included Lincoln Computer Services, Baker Tilly, Corporate Synergies Group, Mutual of America and Valley National Bank. “The compassion, support and guidance provided by our volunteers impacts numerous seniors and young students in our communities,” said Barbara Faron, Chief Executive Officer, Federation of Organizations. “We’re thrilled to honor their deep dedication and commitment, as well as the distinguished career of my friend and colleague, Philip Matcovsky. Many thanks to our incredible program and event sponsors and to Federation’s extraordinary volunteers for helping to transform hundreds of lives across Long Island.”

the students might incur. “In all the years that I’ve taught sideshow school,” Dean and Professa, Adam Rinn declares, “nobody has ever gotten hurt.” Rinn himself was a graduate of the Sideshow School and went on to become a prolific performer who has entertained audiences throughout North America. Sessions are capped at 10 students so that each student can learn in a safe and controlled atmosphere. “Safety is key when learning these feats,” says Rinn,“we don’t force anything upon the students, they attend the school because they want to learn these unique acts. It’s important to be patient and work with the students at their level.” Those attending the three day, hands on seminar have ranged from doctors, authors and teachers who have a general interest in sideshow and circus arts to magicians, jugglers and bartenders who have used some of the skills they have learned in their own line of work to sideshow performers looking to expand their repertoire. But it is not all about the ‘working acts.’ The three day session also offers a history of the legendary amusement district and its role in olde time and contemporary freak shows. “It’s very rewarding when the students conquer their fears and hit the ground running,” The Professa states. “After each session, I get a slew of emails thanking me

Chapter 35 Today, I turn 35, making that dreaded leap into the next age bracket. So long 1834. It’s been fun. Though age is but a number, it does tend to carry added significance the higher those digits climb. Each year brings with it a sort of reevaluation of life. Where am I at? Where do I want to be? And, most importantly, how to traverse that at-times tricky road between points A & B. Uneven as it might seem, I do believe we all have a path we are destined to travel. How we choose to navigate it remains somewhat open-ended. I’ve always felt my generation existed on the cusp of two worlds. A child of the 90’s, my teen years were spent listening to the sounds of *NSync and Britney Spears and watching T.G.I.F. on ABC
Friday nights. The entire grunge movement passed me by, as did many of the cult classic movies of the time. Twenty years later, I have found a new appreciation for all that came before. Pop culture aside, I feel my particular age group remains the last of the “old school.” We were brought up in an age where technology was limited to televisions and radios, Walkmen and cassette tapes. No one had a cell phone until I was well into college, perhaps a beeper if they were lucky. If you wanted to reach a friend, you called their home and most likely were greeted by their parents, who knew you by name. A night out consisted of being dropped off at the local mall or movie theater, then picked up by those same parents and taken
Summer Drift By: Carolyn Mandelino
I let my heart run free again - all to forget you That beautiful smile, contagious laugh and the way you loved to tease I missed the way you hugged me so tightly to put my heart at ease But you drifted away so quickly, like a tiny branch being swept away by the strong currents of time You were my air, my water - the very food that fueled my life And now I drift alone, awaiting for my lost heart to be found again But it seems whatever mountain I climb, river I cross, or simply wherever I am or whatever I do, my mind always drifts back to you
Value the Life I Have Lived By: Patricia Quill
Value the life I have lived... don’t dwell on the things I’ve done wrong but praise kindness or a gentle spirit. Value the life I have lived... I have mourned and felt my sadness and came to terms with my own brokenness. Value the life I have lived... It has merit and worth try, please, to understand my intention.
By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
to a local diner. To say things have changed would be an understatement. Of course, this is the case with each generation, as its members grow and flourish and begin to explore the world on their own. We pick up on elements of those who came before and modify them to fit our constantly evolving view of our surroundings as they, too, evolve on a near daily basis. The hope, in the end, is that we will never completely let go of those things which shaped us during our most formative years, the core values we were raised with. No matter how life may change, no matter how many age brackets we pass through, we must remain true to ourselves. Here’s to 35. Here’s to the next chapter, a fresh page in the old book.
Value the life I have lived... I have tried to be loving and do what I could If I have failed, it is not for lack of trying. Value the life I have lived... remember who I am as a woman a child of God just as every one else, human and limited. Value the life I have lived... I ask forgiveness for the destructive behavior that may have caused you to feel insecure.

Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo was founded in 1970 by Stanley and Diane Novak. Today, almost 50 years later the park is home to over a hundred animals, including over 35 different species. To thank the visitors that have kept the park going for 48 years, the Long Island Game Farm is throwing its first ever Founder’s Day Celebration – A Family Appreciation Day, on Saturday, August 26. All day long, admission will be $6(+tax)/adult and one free child admission per adult (each additional child is $6 +tax). Rain date is Sunday, August 27th. During this celebration, not only will the park be thanking its guests, but they will also be honoring the park’s founders, Stanley and Diane. Guests will be able to meet Diane and her daughter Melinda, the current President and Vice President, to learn about the park’s history. This meet and greet will take place at the gazebo at
noon. “We’ve been wanted to host an event like this for a while now,” Vice President, Melinda Novak states. “We love our visitors, they are the ones that make this park successful and we want them to know that it is all appreciated. Plus, we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate 48 years as a Long Island Family Tradition.” In addition to a being able to meet and talk with Diane and Melinda, those in attendance can also enjoy one of the Long Island Game Farms featured summer shows – Nature Nick’s Animal Adventure. This experience, presented by “Nature” Nick Jacinto, is the only animal show in the northeast to include kangaroos, birds of prey and monkeys! This is the last weekend the show is running for the season, it will not return until next summer. Nature Nick’s Animal Adventure will be featured on the Game Farm’s main stage at 11:30

On Tuesday, August 1st, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County to introduce a new patch program that teaches scouts about the importance of energy conservation, as part of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math initiative (STEM). The event was held at the Discovery World STEM Center at Camp Sobaco in Yaphank. The center offers girls a hands-on approach
to exploring STEM through demonstrations, special guest presentations, and more. “As the former energy director of the Town of Brookhaven, I am pleased to join the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County to unveil the new energy conservation patch program,” said Legislator Anker. “The partnership between PSEG and the Girl Scouts will inspire, motivate, and encourage our girls to explore the
exciting paths of STEM.” The Girl Scouts have partnered with PSEG Long Island for the new program, which teaches girls about the importance of electric safety and energy conservation in the home. The program is the first of its kind to be introduced at the Discovery World STEM Center. For more information about the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County and their patch programs, visit www. gssc.us.

Golf Tournament to Draw Crowds The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is pleased to announce its upcoming 37th annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational. This landmark charity tournament will take place on Tuesday, October 3rd. Participants will have their choice of teeing off at Meadow Brook Club in Jericho or Piping Rock Golf Course in Locust Valley. As the drug epidemic is front page news almost every day, the important work of LICADD is more vital than ever. Named for LICADD Founder, R. Brinkley Smithers, the
tournament’s proceeds ensure that the services LICADD provides - from screening, intervention and referral services, to recovery support, prevention education, an Employee Assistance Program and mentoringall remain accessible to the individuals and families who are most affected by drug and alcohol abuse on Long Island. No one is ever turned away from receiving services due to financial hardship. This high energy, fast-paced event offers a challenging round on two of Long Island’s premier courses. It has also become so much more. Event Co-
Chairs, Michael Brennan, Bill Baum, and Jeffery Capazzi, agree on the appeal of the R. Brinkley Smithers tournament. Remarks Event Co-Chair and Board Chair, Michael Brennan, “R. Brinkley Smithers has earned a reputation as one of Long Island’s most popular charity golf tournamentshow fitting that it is dedicated to raising critical funds at the height of a national drug crisis with Long Island being especially hard hit.” Prizes will be awarded in team and individual categories, and participants will have their chance to “Beat the Pro.” With
dozens of silent auction, live auction, and raffle prizes, everyone will feel like a winner, even if their scores are well over par. The live auction boasts playing opportunities at some of the country’s top courses, while the raffle features golf and vacation packages to far-away destinations. “Rest assured this is not your run-of-the-mill golf tournament,” explained Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC. “It is an opportunity to provide hope and healing to at-risk individuals and the families who support them.” The annual fundraiser offers several participation
and sponsorship opportunities. Tournament Sponsors will be featured in multi-media presentations at the tournament, receive sponsor level signage on the course, a pin flag/ tee sign package and great exposure on our high traffic website. Each sponsorship package comes with playing opportunities at one of Long Island’s most popular charity golf tournaments. Not a golfer? Not to worry, tickets are available for the Diamonds in the Rough Reception with sumptuous buffet, to be held at 5:30 p.m. at Meadow Brook Club. Foursomes and
individual tickets are on sale and expected to sell out before the event. On Wednesday, August 9th, the Bay Shore Board of Education announced that it has extended Joseph C. Bond’s contract as Superintendent of Schools through the 2019-2020 school year. Mr. Bond has been Superintendent since July 2015 when he was named Interim Superintendent. He was appointed Superintendent in the spring of 2016. Mr. Bond is a proven leader who shares the Board’s vision for raising academic achievement, engaging the community and creating a public education system that serves students and families effectively. Since coming to Bay Shore, Mr. Bond has overseen the creation of the Family Engagement Program, the passing of two budgets that were under the cap and the continuation
of construction at the Armory. “Since taking over the helm of the Bay Shore Schools, Mr. Bond has shown that he is the right person to lead our district,” said Board of Education President Guy Leggio. “As a Board, we want to ensure the best possible outcome for all of our students and one way to do that is to have continuity in leadership. We are confident that Mr. Bond will continue to move our district in the right direction.” “I would like to thank the Board of Education for their confidence in my leadership of the Bay Shore School District,” said Mr. Bond. “Leading this district is an incredible blessing but also an awesome responsibility. It is a responsibility I do not take lightly, but I welcome wholeheartedly. I look forward to working with
the Board, my team and the community over the next three years to continue the district’s tradition of high achievement and preparing our students for college and 21st Century careers. We will move towards implementing our educational and technological initiatives, and we will complete construction on the dedicated UPK facility at the Bay Shore Armory, which will continue to make Bay Shore a destination location. We will, as always, provide a cutting edge, well-rounded education for our students through programs like dual language and our International Baccalaureate diploma track. Our focus will remain on developing the whole child and achieving the best possible outcome for each student. Bay Shore is a place where children are encouraged to dream, lead and achieve, and I am proud to be a part of the community.” With the continued support of the community, as well as the ongoing efforts of the Board of Education, administration and staff, the Bay Shore School District remains committed to providing outstanding and economical programs and services for your children.
