ANYTHING FLOATS - BSA Troop 43 by the Sea, Charted by St. Peters by the Sea of Bay Shore had a great time at Summer Camp 2018. They won the “Anything Floats” regatta and several awards leading to them earning the distinction of both Honor Patrol and Honor Troop for the week. The scouts attending completed many badges and rank advancements and preformed service projects and gained other valuable life skills. The scouts thank the Baiting Hollow Scout Camp and their staff, the Bay Shore community, their charter, Troop Committee and all the parents that helped make this week at camp possible.

Flipgrid is a video discussion platform that enables students to communicate their ideas in a deeper and more creative manner. Students use Flipgrid to make videos to ask or answer questions by teachers. Originally Dr. Charlie Miller, co-founder of Flipgrid, developed a version of Flipgrid called Vidku for his college students, as he was a professor at the University of Minnesota (UMN).

Since its official release in October of 2014 Flipgrid has 21 million active students across 181 countries. This platform is so well known, that every second 9 new videos are created and uploaded by students around the world.

Flipgrid has a total of over 300 years of combined content.

Flipgrid has been growing in popularity over the past year, and decided to go on a bus tour up the east coast. They started at Davis Elementary School

in Marietta, Georgia and made their way up to Middletown High School in Rhode Island.

On their journey up the east coast, they stopped at our beautiful Bay Shore Middle School to meet with us and our librarian, Mrs. Holzweiss, who is one of their first ambassadors.

Students have been using Flipgrid in the library for almost 4 years! Their visit to our school induced excitement to those of whom used and enjoyed Flipgrid.

At the Flipgrid presentation, they were very outgoing and

energetic. Flipgrid had fun with the kids there and played around, danced, let the children sign their voice pod. Although they needed to be serious in the presentation they had a great sense of humor and made the students laugh.

They showed all of the different kids all around the world doing what they love and sharing their ideas and talents. We really enjoyed being around them. We wore our Techspert t-shirts with a Flipgrid fever logo on the shoulder. Overall our brief encounter with the Flipgrid team was extremely fun and exciting.

In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of a Presidential Order that mandated the integration of the United States armed forces, youngsters from The Tri Community and Youth Agency (Tri CYA), The Academy Charter School and Hofstra University’s Summer Camp program participated in an wide ranging educational seminar that examined President Harry Truman’s historic decision and its continuing impact on American society.

NYU historian Dr. Jeffrey Sammons, an expert in African-American and U.S. military history, explained to the youngsters that prior to the issuing of Executive Order 9981, African Americans were segregated into separate units from their white counterparts. In many instances, these units were assigned menial tasks in the rear and rarely were permitted to enter combat.

Dr. Sammons stated, “On July 26th, 1948, President

You may recall my name being mentioned from time to time in a handful of articles, but I’ve never been given the opportunity to put fin to keyboard and “step in” for In Step - until today.

From what I hear, my predecessor, the beloved Buddy the Betta, was quite the regular contributor, even having his name grace the staff box as a guest columnist for a period of time. While I’m certainly no Buddy, I’d like to think I have my own unique charm to bring to the paper. Still a baby by betta fish standards, I’ve resided with my human for nearly two years already, and still going strong!

Our story began back in November of 2016, following the passing of Buddy just a few days prior to Thanksgiving. As I darted to and fro in my tiny

betta bowl at the local pet store, a mere speck of a fish, I spotted the girl who would come to adopt me. As she peered through the plastic, fascinated by my deep blue hue and pointy nose, I waved my sheer fins ecstatically and stared intently into her face.

It was love at first sight.

Fast forward approximately one year, eight months, one week and four days later {fish keep impeccable time}, and our lives have been enriched by each other’s company - well, on the rare occasions she’s actually home of course. Most days have been spent examining my minithermometer {still waiting on a replacement for that, by the way}, combing the gravel for rogue bits of food and lunging out of the water at any who dare peer too closely into my bowl.

And then there’s bath time, the dreaded uprooting of my dear plant and redecorating of my abode. As soon as I see the big yellow scoop come out, I flatten myself against the side of the container and refuse

to budge. Feeding times are another nuisance, as my human still insists on crushing my pellets into bits, forcing me to chase my tail for crumbs before they settle on the bottom, never to be seen again.

But alas, I’m just a tiny curmudgeon of a fish, always looking for something to gripe about. Truth is, we are a match made in heaven, both preferring our solitude and possessing a bit of that OCD need to clean up our surroundings constantly.

At the end of the day, she waves goodnight and turns off my desk lamp, and we part as friends . . . until the morning comes, and sleepyhead decides to hit snooze a few too many times, delaying my breakfast.

Ah, the life of a fish. Eat, sleep, swim laps. Repeat. And on Fridays in August when my mommy dearest is drained of ideas for her column, I write. Pleasure to make your acquaintance, dear readers.

“Now retired from my rank as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves, during my three decades of service, I was deployed to Germany, Guantanamo Bay, Iraq and Afghanistan. I have seen acts of bravery among my military colleagues and I have seen prejudice. I have seen the best we can be and the worst we can be. I have seen a military proud of its diversity and one still wrestling with racism, reflecting a nation that is still struggling with bigotry. In serving my country as an Army officer, I was equally proud of having served in the struggle for racial and gender equality. President Truman’s executive order started that journey some 70 years ago, but each one of us must continue to strive every day to meet its objectives.”

An equally proud veteran joining the Councilwoman was Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory who enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1993.

Soon after, he was accepted to Officer Candidate School (OCS). After completion of OCS, Lieutenant Gregory was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Field Artillery. He would later make his own history by becoming the first person of color in history to be elected Majority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature.

Nassau County Legislator Arnold Drucker reminded, “As an attorney I have been reminded since my earliest days before the bench that justice is blind.

We gather here today, surrounded by weapons of World War II, when many of them were used by soldiers

in a segregated army. And yet the courage and the sacrifice of those American soldiers were blind just like justice. Seventy years ago, President Harry Truman recognized their battlefield sacrifice and the hypocrisy of racism. It was the beginning of the end for those who thought our American principles of equal justice and equal opportunity didn’t apply to people of color. The journey is far from over, but I am honored to mark this milestone in American civil rights.”

Youngsters attending the event at the Museum of American Armor also met a group of African American living historians from the Museum of American Armor who presented themselves in various military uniforms spanning the centuries to help tell the story of the outstanding record of service of African Americans in the service of our nation.

Museum background: The Museum of American Armor is a New York State chartered, 501 C 3, not for profit museum. Located at 1303 Round Swamp Road inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Old Bethpage, it is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission donation requested is $12 for adults and $8 for seniors, veterans and children.

Harry S. Truman, less than three years after an Allied victory over Nazism, fascism, and racism in which black soldiers fought and died for freedom and democracy abroad and at home, issued Executive Order 9981 which technically established the President’s Committee on Equality of Treatment and Opportunity in the Armed Forces.

“Despite its lack of immediacy and failure to call explicitly for the end of segregation, its antisegregationist intent and subsequent enforcement would make the document a basis for an integrated Army and serve as an important predicate to the much more heralded (U.S. Supreme Court) Brown v. Board of Education decision, declaring segregated public schools unconstitutional.

It is safe to posit, that without this executive order the battle against systemic discrimination and segregation would have been immeasurably more delayed and difficult.”

Lawrence Kadish, the president and founder of the Museum of American Armor stated, “This museum has a timeless mission, to tell the story of our American military heritage to a new generation. Seventy years ago President Harry Truman issued an executive order that integrated the American military. That is to say, there would no longer be a platoon of just black soldiers or a squadron of just black pilots. It was now one military comprised of Americans, blind to race, color or creed. His order finally recognized that American bravery and patriotism and sacrifice were color blind.”
