Grilling is a convenient way to impart flavor on various foods and enjoy some fresh air and sunshine along the way. Many people work hard to hone their grilling skills, including many of the individuals on Father’s Day shopping lists. Grilling is an opportunity for dads to
Great Grilling Gifts For Dad
flex their culinary muscles and deliver plenty of flame-licked foods.
Various organizations that specialize in grilling have found that men are twice as likely to grill compared to women. Therefore, gifts that cater to dads’ grilling gusto can be ideal this Father’s Day.
• BBQ grill tools: Every grillmaster needs a quality set of tools to do the job. Ultimate grilling kits often come complete with spatula, fork, tongs, heat-resistant gloves, skewers, and additional grilling gear.
• Digital food thermometer: Cooking food to
the correct internal temperature is vital for safety and flavor. Various food thermometers are on the market, but ones that can remain in the food and then send temperatures back to an app via Bluetooth can keep grillers apprised of the cooking progress minute-by-minute.
• Engraved cutting board: Laser-engraved cutting boards can be customized with special messages or monograms so that Dad will feel extra-special serving up his grilled feast.
• Premium wood chunks: Foods can be enhanced with extra flavor when grillmasters utilize wood during cooking. Put together a gift package with woods like hickory, apple and maple.
• Smoker: Expand Dad’s outdoor setup by buying him a smoker. Smokers enable low-and-slow cooking and are ideal
for making briskets, pork roasts and ribs. Some smokers come as combination models that have a grill on one side and a smoker box on the other.
• Meat grinder: Whether it’s a free-standing appliance or an attachment for a stand mixer, a meat grinder enables a person to make his own custom blends of ground meats to use in burgers or sausages. This allows full control over the quality of the meat
cuts used.
• Personalized grill mat: This type of mat will add a personal touch to the grilling area. These mats look good, and many are made with anti-slip backing to ensure they stay in place. Standing on the mat can be more comfortable than standing on concrete or pavers.
Dad deserves the best for Father’s Day. For men who enjoy manning the grill, grilling accessories can heat up gift-giving.

Plants As Long-Term Investments?
Though plants might not seem like the first thing individuals think of when they ponder long-term investments, perennials can be just that. The home and garden experts at HGTV note that some perennials can live for a very long time. For example, according to HGTV, the colorful flowering plant peony, despite a blooming season that usually lasts just seven to 10 days, has been known to survive
for 70 to 100 years. Hostas are another popular perennial because they require little maintenance, and that extra free time can add up over the course of the hosta's life, which can exceed 15 years. Long-living perennials are not necessarily unusual, but gardeners should know that many perennials, and påarticularly those characterized as "short-lived," tend to live around three years.

Cheese Is The Focus Of Classic Comfort Dish
Much like bacon, cheese makes many meals more flavorful. When cheese is the centerpiece of a dish, cheese lovers know it will be tasty and potentially even a little addictive. Such is the case with macaroni and cheese. Many people have a go-to mac and cheese recipe in their culinary repertoire that they pull out anytime they desire some cheesy goodness. For those looking for a new mac and cheese recipe, “Crusty Mac and Cheese” from “Virgil’s Barbecue Road Trip Cookbook” (St. Martin’s Press) by Neal Corman is comfort food at its finest. This version has a little spiciness for an added flavor kick.
Crusty Mac and Cheese
Serves 4-6
1 pound elbow macaroni
1⁄2 teaspoon kosher salt
1⁄8 teaspoon ground white pepper
1⁄2 cup chicken stock
3⁄4 cup heavy cream
1⁄2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1⁄2 tablespoon hot sauce
1⁄2 tablespoon Creole mustard
11⁄4 cup Cheese Wiz®
8 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Grease a 2-quart baking dish.
2. Boil the macaroni in a 2-quart saucepan filled the water, until it is al dente, or still has some snap when you bite it. Strain the pasta and rinse thoroughly with cold water. Set aside.
3. Combine the remaining ingredients, except for the shredded cheese, in a medium saucepan over medium heat. The mixture should be barely simmering. Whisk periodically. Cook for 7 to 10 minutes.
4. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cheese sauce with the pasta and about one-third of the shredded cheese. Transfer to the baking dish, covering with the remaining shredded cheese, and bake covered for 10 minutes.
5. Uncover and bake for 15 minutes more, or until the top is golden brown.

Islip Spring Senior Advocate Schedule
Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Islip residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Spring 2024 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or
recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.
“This is an excellent chance for senior citizens to get the assistance and information they need by connecting with the County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk
County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage of this opportunity.”
In the coming months, Senior Advocates will be visiting the following locations in the Town of Islip:
• Bishop McGann Housing, 200 Bishop McGann Drive, Central Islip: Monday, June 24, 10 am – 12 pm
• Brentwood Senior
Nutrition, 16 Second Avenue, Brentwood: Monday, June 24, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm
• West Islip Senior Center, 90 Higbie Lane, West Islip: Thursday, June 13, 10 am – 12 pm
Advocates assist with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP – formerly known as food stamps), Medicare
Savings Program and Heating Emergency Assistance Program (HEAP) applications. They also can provide information on Medicare, answer questions and make recommendations and referrals. For more information about available services or directions to any of these locations, please call the Suffolk County Office for the Aging at (631) 853-8200.
“For more than three decades, the Suffolk County Office for the Aging has been providing full and trouble-free access to critical services,” Donnelly said. “I am glad to see their great professional community outreach program continue and hope that every senior resident will make full use of it.”

The Summer Solstice
According to the National Weather Service, the summer solstice, which marks the official beginning of summer, occurs at the moment the earth’s tilt toward the sun is at a maximum. As a result,
on the day of the summer solstice, which in 2024 occurs on Thursday, June 20, 2024.
Though it’s not always sunny on the summer solstice, when the sun is out throughout the solstice
people in the Northern Hemisphere can expect more hours of sunlight than any other day of the year. That provides yet another reason to welcome the official arrival of summer.
PUZZLE ANSWERS:
100 Years Ago This Month: Historical Events From June 2024
The month of June has been home to many historical events over the years. Here’s a look at some that helped to shape the world in June 1924.
• Austrian Chancellor Ignaz Seipel is shot by a disgruntled worker on June 1. Seipel survives after a bullet is extracted from his lung.
• The Chicago radio station WDAP is rechristened “WGN” on June 1 after it is purchased by the Chicago Tribune. The station’s new moniker refers to the newspaper’s slogan, “World’s Greatest Newspaper.” Both the WGN station and a television station of the same name continue to be operated out of Chicago today.
• The Indian Citizenship Act is signed into law on June 2 in the United States. The law recognizes all Native Americans who had been born in the United States or its territories as U.S. citizens.
• Influential novelist Franz Kafka dies in Austria on June 3. Kafka, only 40 at the time of his death, suffered from laryngeal tuberculosis and died from starvation after eating became too painful. Kafka, now considered a literary giant of the twentieth century, was a relative unknown at the time of his death.
• The German Reichstag approves the Dawes Plan on June 6. The plan staggers German reparations payments that were mandated in the aftermath of World War I.
• The United States enacts the Clarke-
McNary Act on June 7. The act facilitates the purchase of land to expand the country’s National Forest System.
• Geologist and mountaineer Noel Odell watches British mountain climbers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine ascend from their base camp at Mount Everest on June 8. Mallory and Irvine are never again seen alive, and no trace of either man is discovered until 1999, when Mallory’s body is discovered at an altitude of more than 26,000 feet.
• Ecuador extends the right to vote to women on June 9, becoming the first country in South America to do so.
• The Newton Gang carries out the largest train robbery in American history on June 12. The gang makes off with more than $3 million (the equivalent of roughly $54 million in 2024) after stopping mail train number 57 near Rondout, Illinois.
• The International Football Association Board legalizes the scoring of a goal by corner kick on June 14.
• On June 16, Italian Fascist politician Cesare Rossi surrenders to police in connection with the kidnapping of socialist and Italian Chamber of Deputies member Giacomo Matteoti earlier in the month. Matteoti’s body is ultimately found in August and signs suggest he was beaten to death. Though Rossi ultimately serves ample prison time for anti-fascist activities,
he is not arrested for his involvement in Matteotti’s murder until 1947.
• The Grand National Assembly of Turkey passes the Surname Act on June 21. The act requires every Turkish citizen to have a surname.
• Fritz Haarmann is arrested in Hanover, Germany, on June 23. Prior to his arrest, Haarmann was seen stalking boys, and a subsequent search of his apartment uncovers evidence that Haarmann is a serial killer. Sometimes referred to as the “Butcher of Hanover,” Haarmann is ultimately found guilty of murdering 24 young men and boys and is executed by guillotine in April 1925.
• Publisher William Randolph Hearst launches the New York Daily Mirror on June 24. Hearst launches the paper to compete against the New York Daily News.
• Brothers Jesse Barnes of the Boston Braves and Virgil Barnes of the New York Giants toe the rubber against one another on June 26. The game marks the first pitching matchup between brothers in Major League Baseball history.
• American President Calvin Coolidge’s 16-year-old son, Calvin, Jr., plays tennis on the White House tennis court on June 30. The president’s son plays wearing tennis shoes but no socks and develops a blister on his toe that develops into sepsis. The younger Coolidge passes away on July 7.

The class of 2024 soon will be donning their caps and gowns and receiving their diplomas. After commencement ceremonies, graduation parties will soon follow. For party guests, that means finding the right gifts for grads. Some high school graduates will continue their studies at colleges and universities. Others may pursue careers in various trades. Still, some graduates may be ready to enter the workforce right away. No matter the direction, these gifts can treat graduates to something special.
Streaming TV device
While it's certainly possible to watch favorite shows or films on mobile devices, viewing is that much clearer on televisions. Rather than
graduates having to invest in cable television wherever they go, streaming devices like AppleTV or Roku are portable, which means they can be used at home, in a dorm room or on vacation.
Secured credit card
Individuals typically are eligible to apply for credit cards once they reach age 18, which is the age most students are when they graduate high school. Credit cards are one method of establishing solid credit, so it can be beneficial for a teen to have one. But it can be challenging for individuals with no credit histories to get approval. A secured card, according to CapitalOne, is a credit card that requires money deposited with the credit card issuer in order
Gift Ideas For Graduates
to open the account. This security deposit is held by the issuer as long as the account is open. Often the security deposit is the same as the credit limit. Giftgivers can help establish secured cards for grads by providing the funds for the security deposits.
Framed memorabilia
Whether a graduate was a star athlete or a premier member of the marching band, gift-givers can provide special memories of time spent in school. Frame ticket stubs, sports jerseys, show programs, or other memorabilia that commemorates a graduate's glory days at their alma mater.
Travel accessories
Graduates may want to go on a trip before they take the next step in their lives. Quality travel gear is a worthy investment. Select luggage that won’t exceed airport carry-on limits so grads can cut the baggage check lines when they dart away to locales near or far. Carry-on bags also fit easily in bus cargo areas or in the trunks of cars. Pair the gifts with standard or digital luggage tags.
Wireless earbuds or headphones
Upgrade grads’ audio with the newest wireless earbuds or headphones. This way they can take them to the gym or use them to listen to shows or music while sharing spaces with others, including college roommates.
Smartphone wallet case
Teenagers are seldom without their phones. A smartphone wallet case enables graduates to stash IDs, credit or debit cards and some cash into specially designed pockets built into the phone cases. This keeps all essentials in one spot.

Father’s Day History
Each year, the third Sunday in June is a time to pay homage to fathers and the millions of other men who have stepped into the role of father. While it may seem as though Father’s Day has been around forever, it didn’t become a nationally recognized holiday in the United States until 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed Joint Resolution 187 into law.
Many thank Sonora Smart Dodd for making Father’s Day happen. In 1909,
while attending a Mother’s Day sermon in church, Dodd felt fathers were equally deserving of praise. To honor her own father, a Civil War veteran and widower who raised six children alone, Dodd petitioned for a Father’s Day on June 5th (the anniversary of her father’s death) in her native Spokane, Wash. The celebration was deferred to the third Sunday in June. Another account says Grace Golden Clayton came up with the idea for a Father’s Day in 1908 in Fairmont, West
Virginia. Clayton was inspired to celebrate fathers after 361 local men perished in a deadly mine explosion. Clayton brought the idea up to the minister of her local church. Historians say that Father’s Day may even be a much older idea. St. Joseph’s Day, which was celebrated each year on March 19 in Catholic nations of Europe since the medieval era, and later elsewhere around the world, commemorates Joseph, the husband of Mary and father figure to Jesus. It was said
that Joseph should be held up as the ideal example of fatherhood. The Coptic Orthodox Church celebrates St. Joseph’s Day on July 20. In the Orthodox Christian Church, the second Sunday before the Nativity is celebrated as the Sunday of the Forefatherscelebrating all of Jesus’ male ancestors, with an emphasis on Abraham, the patriarch of the Jewish faith.
Did You Know?
July 4th is a day when Americans celebrate their independence, but it's also a day to commemorate two men who played vital roles in procuring that independence. Both John Adams, the second President of the United States, and his successor Thomas Jefferson passed away on July 4, 1826. The two men had an interesting relationship that became increasingly complex as the nation they helped to found developed. According to History.com, Adams and Jefferson were confidantes in the 1780s, but as time wore on, each man developed a different view of what the United States government should be, creating a rift in their relationship that was only widened by the 1800 presidential election. The men ran against each other in that election, which is still considered one of the more contentious elections in American history. Jefferson ultimately claimed victory, a result so unnerving to Adams that he left Washington, D.C. prior to Jefferson's inauguration. The two men would ultimately reconcile, exchanging more than 150 letters before dying within hours of one another on Independence Day in 1826.
