Saladino Announces Child Car Seat Safety Check
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board, in partnership with the EAC Network, invite residents to a Child Car Seat Safety Check on Tuesday, October 14th , from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Marjorie Post Park (451 Unqua Road, Massapequa). The rain date is scheduled for Wednesday, October 15th.
Every year, countless children are injured or killed in motor vehicle accidents due to improperly installed car seats. National statistics show that as many as 3 out of 4 car seats are not installed correctly - a preventable mistake that can have devastating consequences.
Supervisor Saladino stated, “Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death for children. Child car seats
are proven to drastically reduce the chance of fatal injuries, but only if installed properly. Our goal is to give parents peace of mind by ensuring their car seats are safe and secure. I encourage every parent and caregiver to take advantage of this free safety check.”
Trained technicians will be on-site to inspect
car seats, provide handson guidance, and ensure each child passenger is riding as safely as possible.
Appointments are required. Call (516) 6246308 today to schedule your spot—spaces fill quickly. Together, we can help keep our community’s children safe.

about the environmental benefits these structures offer. The event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Western Waterfront in Oyster Bay.
“A rain garden is a collection of native plants placed in a small depression to temporarily hold rainwater runoff from roofs, driveways, patios, or lawns. They have numerous environmental benefits, such as filtering pollutants, reducing flooding, and providing
food and habitats to wildlife,” Councilwoman Walsh said. “However, they must be maintained regularly to ensure healthy soil, healthy plants, and a healthy community, which is why we’re seeking volunteers to assist with our existing rain gardens at the Western Waterfront in Oyster Bay.”
Volunteers are invited to the Rain Garden Work Party on Saturday, October 11th, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Western Waterfront, located at 1 West End Avenue, Oyster Bay (Larrabee entrance of TR Park, to the left).
This event will be held in partnership with Friends
of the Bay and the Nassau County Soil and Water Conservation District. All volunteers should bring gloves, and community service hours will be offered to participants. As an added bonus, participants can learn how to apply for the new Long Island Garden Rewards program, which offers up to a $500 reimbursement for installing rain gardens and incorporating native plants on your property.

LONG ISLAND MEDIA GROUP
As advocates for each other’s success, Massapequa High School seniors Kathleen Cooney and Meghan Walsh are seeing the results of their hard work and mutual encouragement. They were recently named the top-ranked graduates for the Class of 2026.
Kathleen, the valedictorian with a 101.104 grade point average, attended Birch Lane Elementary School. She has taken 13 Advanced Placement courses and particularly enjoyed her science and history classes. As a sophomore, she started the Wellness Club, and is also a member of the Spanish Club, field hockey and flag football teams, and National, Art and Spanish honor societies. Kathleen works as a lifeguard in the summers, gives swimming lessons, has volunteered at the Massapequa Fire Department’s blood drive, and tutors high school students in geometry and middle school students in math.
Meghan is the salutatorian with a 100.935 GPA. The Fairfield Elementary School graduate has enrolled in 12 Advanced Placement courses, with math and French being her favorite subjects. Meghan also took College Art of Baking and College Creative Food Preparation classes, and now uses the skills she learned to make customized cakes. She is president of the French Club, Key Club and Mathletes, a member of Chiefs Challenge and Students Against Destructive Decisions, and was inducted into the National and French honor societies. Outside of school, she coaches gymnastics.
Sitting in her anatomy class, Kathleen was called down to the guidance office and brought to Principal Barbara Lowell’s office. With her parents on the phone, she learned that she earned the top rank in her class. Meghan was in her college psychology class when she got the call to come down for the good news.
Class Of 2026 Top Scholars Personify Massapequa Learners And Leaders
After high school, Kathleen wants to enroll in a physician assistant program in which she would earn both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees within seven years. She aspires to be a physician’s assistant in a maternity unit. Meghan plans to double major in both mathematics and French, and wants to pursue a career as a mathematician. She hopes to live for at least a few years in France, a country she is planning to visit next summer.
Valedictorian and salutatorian are among the many accolades they have earned. Both students are AP Scholars with Distinction and have been consistently named to the Principal’s Honor Roll. Kathleen is a scholar athlete, was selected to the High School National Academic Squad and will earn an AP Capstone Diploma. Meghan received the College Board National School Recognition Award and was a silver medalist in the Le Grand Concours National French Exam,

Fans of fall know that few things can beat the crisp, sunny afternoons of October.
The early days of the month bring with them comfortable temperatures and beautiful vistas. Summer’s heat and humidity often are things of the past, and time spent outdoors, whether raking leaves or tailgating at a football game, can be quite pleasant.
Early October is home to two holidays: Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which fall this year on October 13th. That means following the first full week of the month, people in the United States have a chance to enjoy a three-day weekend to soak up all fall has to offer. Here are a few ideas.
Camping and hiking
Take in the awe of fall foliage up close and personal by visiting a rural area or park a short drive away from home. New York
Dog strollers have surged in popularity in recent years, particularly as pets are allowed in locations that might have been off limits in years past. It’s common to see pet owners scooting their

City residents, for example, can head to the Catskills, while Chicagoans can head to White Pines State Park. Different regions of the country will showcase their fall colors at other times, and while foliage may be past peak, these two- to three-hour drives can be highly enjoyable.
Fall festivals
Check out the chamber of commerce or visitors’ bureau websites of various cities and towns to see what is being offered relatively close by. Many will put on community fairs, festivals, and the like. Columbus Day also presents a chance to celebrate Italian culture in many places, so Italian food and cultural festivals may be on the docket for those looking for such an excursion.
Skiing towns
When the last of the summer tourists depart from ski resort towns and
the lull sets in before the winter ski season heats up, visitors to Colorado cities like Aspen, Telluride, or the Vermont city of Stowe can find great deals on hotel stays and dine out at relatively empty restaurants.
People who are not ready to part with warm weather can head to Miami. Miami often puts on a huge festival on Columbus Day, and people from all over the world come to enjoy it. There’s fun for all ages, and
guests are welcome to

Indigenous cultures

prized pooches around in strollers once used exclusively for small children. Dog owners who have never owned a dog stroller before may wonder just how useful they can be. Some people have replaced
traditional dog carriers with strollers, which tend to be more ergonomic and comfortable to use than carriers. Strollers can be a convenient means for taking dogs (typically smaller pups) to busy
public locations or even to work. Strollers also can keep dogs out of the elements when the weather can be difficult for them to handle. Older dogs with mobility issues can benefit from strollers because they
still enable the dogs to get fresh air without tiring them out. Also, people who own multiple dogs may find strollers make it easy to take multiple pooches out and about. Strollers also let small dogs rest

Thank you to my colleagues, all the volunteers, Randi Shubin Dresner, president & CEO of Island Harvest, and the entire Island Harvest team for all you do.”
