Fire Prevention Week

La Villetta Restaurant, specializing in Northern Italian cuisine, has been welcomed with open arms to the Farmingdale community, backed by the more-than-40 years of combined experience of owners Leo Ulaj and Tom Dushaj, both from Montenegro.

Whether it was her first name, last name, I wasn’t certain.

But it didn’t matter. What are the odds?

Maybe it was just a coincidence. Two, in fact.

Within the space of about five minutes. Both having to do with my grandpa. Perhaps just a stroke of luck. But, to me, it was a sign. Of what, exactly, I don’t know. But these subtle reminders of those who have passed on are around us always, if we only choose to pay attention to them. And I do, always.

They say signs come to those who believe in them, those who are open to accept them for what they are – whether it provides a moment of comfort or brings to mind a happy memory. We can certainly all use more of those. Anxiously awaiting the next one...

Expanding their learning environment beyond four walls, a group of Massapequa High School students recently turned nature into their classroom.

The Advanced Placement Environmental Science class visited the Massapequa Preserve on September 30th,

You need only to look, and take notice. A visit from a butterfly to commemorate a birthday… the timely appearance of a nest of robin’s eggs… a rainbow arching over the sky…

There are those who simply appreciate these occurrences as a token of nature at its finest and leave it at that. And then there are those who see it as representative of something far deeper, and more spiritual in nature.

Sure, anything can be made to “fit,” if you are so inclined; but there are certain phenomena, if you will, that simply cannot be denied and leave you shaking your head in wonderment.

Case in point: I recently found myself driving on Sunrise Highway, as I often

do, when I happened to focus in on the license plate of the vehicle in front of me. It read “RIP PAL.” For those who may not know, I recently lost my grandfather – my “Pal” – as I fondly called him, earlier this year. The odds of that particular combination of letters, traveling in front of me at that particular time, leading up to what would have been his 90th birthday this month… it was pretty mind blowing at the time.

As soon as I was stationary, I quickly texted my mom to tell her about my encounter, still incredulous at the coincidence. No sooner did I get out of the car to head in to pick up dinner, when I was met with another “sign.”

Feastival Raises Funds The Fuoco family, alongside The Rotary Club of Patchogue, hosted the 47th annual Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival at Bellport Country Club on Thursday, September 15th.

Funds raised from the tournament and dinner will benefit Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, a year-long respite for children and young adults with physical and mental disabilities. More than $1.4 million has been raised by the Golf Feastival to support the camp since its inaugural event in 1969.

This year’s Feastival featured 152 golfers at the golf tournament, many of whom golfed together in teams. The consequent cocktail hour, buffet-style Italian dinner, tournament awards, raffle and silent auction was attended by 180 guests.

US Submarine Veterans voluntarily do this by giving these children caring attention, Honorary Submariner caps, certificates, photos of submarines and submarine related items during visits.

The Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Program is part of the United States Submarine Veterans Charitable Foundation (USSVCF).

Lighthouse Will Not Light The Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum Committee announced today that due to financial constraints the Lighthouse Tower and Keepers dwelling will not be lit this year during the holiday season. This of course does not mean the mariners beacon atop the Lighthouse tower which has warned sailors since 1797.

Fall & Halloween Festival

PLAINEDGE PRIDE - Despite a dreary homecoming day that resulted in a loss, Plainedge High School’s spirits were high at the pep rally on September 30th. Lighthouse Will Not Light repair and maintenance of not only the Lighthouse Tower and Museum, but the revetment holding up the bluff on which our beautiful beacon stands.

The Montauk Lighthouse is a self-funding notfor-profit entity, relying

solely on our wonderful patrons to support our site, tours and operations.

The annual cost of just lighting the Lighthouse for the holiday season is about $50,000. Our first responsibility is to the care and upkeep of “The Light.” We would

patch for children to pick out their own pumpkin, Halloween crafts, a hay maze, bouncies, games, photo opportunities and refreshments. Costumes for those attending are encouraged and residents can bring their already carved pumpkins to be judged in this year’s Carved Pumpkin Contest.”

Berner Middle School held an internet safety program for seventh-graders on September 28th with Officer Sharon Galvin of the Nassau County Police Department.

Officer Galvin, a 30year member of law enforcement, offered students several tips to say safe online, telling them not to communicate with strangers and not to post personal information on social media. She also cited the severe consequences that teenagers could face for harassing others

through the internet, texting or video gaming, known as cyberbullying.

Officer Galvin noted that both schools and the police take these issues very seriously and children who feel they are being bullied or know of another student being bullied should tell an adult.

Internet Safety Students and their parents were encouraged to talk to each other at home about online responsibility.

Through Berner’s BRAVE program - Bullying Reduction Anti-Violence Education - follow-up discussions will be held in classes with the school social worker about the importance being an “Upstander,” which is someone who stands up against bullying.

School officials noted the importance of internet safety now that all students in seventh grade and up have district-issued Chromebooks.

HURRICANE SEMINAR - The Town of Oyster Bay’s annual Hurricane-Emergency Management Seminar was held at the Massapequa West End Firehouse. The purpose of the seminar is to inform residents on how to prepare for a hurricane or other weather emergency, when to evacuate, what to do when a storm hits and how to best respond during the aftermath. The program was conducted by leaders in the fields of meteorology and emergency management led by Town of Oyster Bay’s own weather expert Leonard B. Symons, a Town Deputy Commissioner, who has trained at the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Guest speakers included noted Meteorologists who provided unique insight to the impact of severe weather on Long Island and its residents.

Residents Asked to Vote

On Tuesday, October 18th, residents within the Massapequa School District will be asked to vote on the sale of the building located at 1 Carmans Road to Nassau BOCES for $9 million.

Included in the proposed sale are the physical school building and the immediate surrounding land, which totals 6.2 acres. The district will retain ownership of the adjoining athletic fields, totaling 3.6 acres, for continued use by student athletic teams and community organizations.

For close to 40 years, the Carman Road School has provided comprehensive educational services for students with multiple physical and developmental disabilities, ages 5 to 21.

If the sale is successful, the $9 million proceeds will be placed within a tax reduction reserve and used to lower tax increases over the course of 10 years. In New York State, a reserve for tax reduction is for the gradual use of the proceeds of the sale of school district real property.

said Massapequa Superintendent of Schools Lucille Iconis.

“The transfer of this building to a valued and trusted educational partner like Nassau BOCES ensures the property’s continued use for education while retaining the athletic fields for use by our students and residents.”

If the sale is approved

by Massapequa residents on October 18th, Nassau County residents will need to vote and approve the purchase of the building by Nassau BOCES before the purchase can be official and the title transferred.

The referendum will take place on Tuesday, October 18th from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
