Free Senior Citizen Activities & Programs Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino has announced a variety of free weekday senior citizens fall activities offered by the Department of Community and Youth Services (CYS) in community centers and parks throughout the Town. Book Club, music, bingo, rummikub, line dancing, and tai chi are just some of the activities seniors can enjoy as part of this year’s program, which runs through October 31st.

“I invite our senior residents to participate in these free activities, where they can enjoy the company of others, make new friends, and stay active and engaged as the weather gets

crisper and cooler as we transition into fall,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Our senior fall activities are extremely popular, and I expect this year to be no different with the expansive and diverse activities that will be offered!”

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition’s new prevention campaign, Kids and Weed Don’t Roll Together, outlines unique and informative facts and education to help parents talk with their kids about how marijuana use affects their brain, health and safety.

In the Massapequas, youth, on average, first use marijuana before the age of 15 (2018 YDS grades 7-12).

When marijuana use starts before age 18, approximately 1 in 6 people will become addicted (Centers for Disease Control).

Approximately 10 percent of people who use marijuana may develop what is called a marijuana use disorder—problems with their health, school, friendships, family or other conflicts in their life (NIDA).

Parents should be aware of common signs of marijuana use including changes in mood, increased irritability, having trouble remembering

www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was originally founded in 1985 as a grassroots local advocacy effort to bring nonprofits and other community partners together to unite around the cause of homelessness, seeking to expand and enhance services to meet local needs.

As a small local entity, LICH has always relied on partnerships and joint efforts in order to adequately provide support for those that were experiencing homelessness on Long Island.

Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most significantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

The majority of people experiencing homelessness on Long Island are families that cannot afford rent or cannot find rental units quickly enough in a high cost and low availability rental market. There is also a significant local homeless population of aging single adults and adult couples that were living on fixed incomes and could no longer afford rent. While many of us could never imagine being homeless for even a single night, for both homeless families and homeless aging adults on Long Island, most remain homeless in a shelter for over six months on average,

while some remain homeless in shelters for several years before securing permanent housing.

LICH has expanded their services.

These services include street outreach, housing navigation, system data management and outcomes tracking.

All of those are part of what has become known as the local “Coordinated Entry System”. Coordinated Entry is a personcentered, housing-focused approach to streamline access to housing and services, while prioritizing those who have been homeless the longest and those who are the most in need of housing and support.

In 2020, LICH assisted over 3,000 Long Islanders with food and toiletries and connected approximately 200 households to permanent housing. Next month from November 14-November 21 it will be Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week, let’s join together and help those in need.

Operation Splash Makes Waves For Long Island’s South Shores The low-cost solution to waterfront pollution Continued From 7 State.

Beyond collecting marine debris, Operation SPLASH has also made tremendous headway in stemming the awful tide of sewage being dumped in our bays and the toxic pollution entering our waters through stormwater runoff. SPLASH crews actively monitor and identify pollutants, as well

as their sources. To reduce the flow of toxins and trash into the bays, SPLASH has collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County.

Operation SPLASH also offers STEM-based education programs to educate students throughout Nassau County about the importance of Long Island’s south shore

bays and the challenges that they face. Students from elementary school through college have the opportunity to learn through hands-on programming that goes beyond the classroom to include boat tours and local excursions.

With the leadership of talented and environmentally passionate marine tradespeople, educators and business

owners, Operation SPLASH has remained focused on its mission and produces extraordinary results.

SPLASH volunteers work hard to protect and preserve the South Shore bays and salt marshes, along with the wildlife, fish, and fowl that call them home. The ultimate goal is to maintain these precious ecosystems through cleanup and outreach efforts for future Long

Islanders to respectfully enjoy for generations to come.

Free Online Job Skill Training Services Offered to Help Residents Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board remind residents that the Town offers free online job skills training for those individuals looking for new employment, as well as those looking to reenter the workforce following the hardships imposed by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Metrix E-Learning System, the free online job skills training service, is offered through The Workforce Partnership a

consortium of local governments committed to providing free and valuable information and services to both employers and jobseekers.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “Many people have experienced unimaginable and unprecedented hardship throughout this pandemic, and as a result, many businesses have closed and individuals have lost work because of it. As we continue turning the corner in the fight

against COVID-19, residents are looking to return to work and we’re proud to offer the Metrix E-Learning System to those who seek to ‘skill-up’ and re-enter the workforce more capable than when they left it. Of course, services are available for those looking for new employment opportunities as well, including recent college graduates and persons looking to change career paths.”

The Metrix E-Learning System offers a wide variety of

courses to help people who are looking for employment.

Currently, there are over 5,500 courses available, and the system can be utilized any time, any place, 24/7. To enroll, residents must visit http://thewp. skillupamerica.org.

Upon registration, residents will be contacted by job counselors from the Career Center who will help them navigate the program and find the appropriate skills needed to re-enter

Music Courses Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects.

A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music.

The researchers behind the study examined

the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia.

Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12.

Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.
