Ames Library Aims To Enlighten Young Minds

The library media center at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus is full of resources, accessible both in the room and online. Students visited the library during their English classes to learn about all the tools at their fingertips.

The month of November is a special time for the nation’s veterans. While Memorial Day honors fallen soldiers and service people, Veteran’s Day, which takes place each November, is an opportunity to commemorate the efforts of all who have been in the armed forces, with a special emphasis on living veterans. While people are encouraged to thank veterans throughout the year, Veteran’s Day is a particularly poignant time to show your appreciation for the men and women of the military.

Veteran’s Day takes place on November 11 and marks an important moment in history. On November 11, 1918, World War I, known at the time as “The Great War,” unofficially ended when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, took place between Germany and the Allied nations on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. World

War I ended on paper when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Armistice Day became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938.

However, after subsequent wars, including World War II and the Korean War, veterans’ service organizations lobbied for Armistice Day to be revised so it would be more inclusive of all veterans.

On June 1, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation to strike the word “Armistice” from the holiday’s name in favor of “Veterans.” Since then, November 11 has been known as “Veterans Day” and has honored veterans of all wars.

Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday in October for roughly seven years under the Uniform

books available on the library’s website. They showed students how to access the online catalog.

The library’s website is also filled with online databases to help students do research using credible sources. Ms. King and Mr. Norden said these tools are available so they can “work smarter” and expand their research skills beyond a Google search.

All ninth grade students will work on a research paper this year. English

teacher Lori Bauer said the topics vary depending on the teacher, but the concept is the same. Each student is expected to complete a paper three to five pages in length using multiple sources and include a cover page and works cited list.

To conclude the library orientation, students took part in an online scavenger hunt on their Chromebooks to find different materials on the library’s website.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola recently announced that Trainville Hobby Depot has postponed its Model Train Show scheduled for Saturday, November 21st and Sunday, November 22nd from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 West Carl Street in Hicksville.

Pa l - O - M i n e Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations that was founded by Lisa Gatti.

Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.

They also offer group programs, individual lessons, c o r p o r a t e workshops and a program specifically designed for military members.

Lisa’s mother was a special education teacher and her father worked for a book publishing company. She was greatly influenced by both of their professions.

She grew up knowing she loved horses, but really wanted to become a teacher and work with children in need. Her father would often send her books while she was away at college, and one day she received a book titled Palomino, by Danielle Steel. As she read through the pages, she became inspired by what was written: a ranch that was formed to help people through equine therapy. From that point on, she was certain that was exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa Gatti opened Pal-O-Mine Equestrian in 1995 as a 501C(3) organization.

Pal-O-Mine is located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia. They grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week, and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of-theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people and their work is truly heartwarming.

Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome,

Additionally, this organization is proud to now offer a Frontline Heroes Wellness Program. This program is complimentary for medical professionals and first responders, and can be virtual or in person.

The well-known benefits of being in nature include reduced stress while providing a sense of calm, connection and solace.

Sessions for this program may include reiki, mindfulness and horsemanship.

Similar to many other organizations, volunteers are the backbone of Pal-OMine. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping.

Please note, all students, volunteers and staff must complete, sign and submit a Health Screening Questionnaire prior to coming to Pal-O-Mine.
