Town Board Announces Winners Of Bike Safety Poster Contest
Lightning Warriors To Host 4th Annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon
Lightning Warriors, a notfor-profit youth triathlon team, will be hosting its 4th annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon on Sunday September 17, 2023 at 7:00 AM at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai, New York.
first timers being called a triathlete,” says Lightning Warriors Head Coach Noah Lam.
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and his colleagues on the Town Board recently honored the winners of the 2023 Bike Safety Poster Contest. The competition was open to 5th grade students throughout the Town of Oyster Bay and was held during the month of
May in recognition of Bike Safety Awareness Month. Robbins Lane Elementary School students, Janice Jiang of Jericho and Brendan Lin of Syosset, were both honored with winning the poster contest.
“Congratulations to these talented and very bright students. Your
artwork is sure to help raise awareness of the safe biking practices in our community, and inspire your classmates to make safe choices while enjoying a bike ride,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Wherever the road of life leads, may you be successful in all your future endeavors!”
This year’s Mini Maniac event will be geared toward triathletes of all levels between the ages of 7 and 17. While all racers will be participating in a youth triathlon, races will be divided into three separate age groups with swimming, biking and running distances varying accordingly. Younger athletes are also encouraged to register to participate in the Splash & Dash event, which is a 50-meter swim and a quarter-mile run for athletes between the ages of 5 and 7.
“I am excited to see the smiles and accomplishments as each athlete crosses the finish line and for those
All Mini Maniac participants will be able to take part in training clinics with the Lightning Warriors team in the months leading up to the triathlon. Favor bags will also be distributed to each racer, as well as medals for all finishers, awards for the top male and female finishers and postrace refreshments.
Participating in youth triathlons help build positive physical activity habits in children. According to Lam, “Every child should be able to swim, bike and run as those are lifetime skills… We’ve also seen that physical activity can provide immense benefits for mental health, more selfesteem, a sharper focus on achieving goals and a better ability to connect with other kids.”
Labor Day Weekend Travel Tips
Labor Day is celebrated on the same day in the United States and Canada each year. An annual holiday to celebrate the achievements of workers, Labor Day (known as Labour Day in Canada), occurs on the first Monday of September each year.
Though its status as the end of summer is not technically accurate, Labor Day marks the unofficial end to the season of fun in the sun for millions of people across both the U.S. and Canada. That makes the weekend preceding Labor Day one of the most popular times to travel. Indeed, data from the Transportation Security Administration indicate that the Friday before Labor Day 2022 was the second busiest travel day at U.S. airports that summer. Travel was equally popular on Labour Day weekend 2022 in Canada, where the online booking platform Kayak reports searches for
international flights had increased by 104 percent compared to the year prior.
Labor Day weekend travel figures to be just as popular this year, so travelers can remember these tips as they plan one last summer getaway.
• Book as early as possible.
With so many people
interested in traveling on Labor Day weekend, it behooves all travelers to plan ahead. Competition for hotel rooms and other lodgings might be steep, and individuals who plan to fly might have trouble finding seats on flights that leave during peak travel hours the longer
they delay.
• Consider traveling by car. Air travel aficionados had some good news and bad news as the summer travel season began in 2023. Data from FlightAware indicated that flight cancellations were down in 2023 compared to 2022. However, FlightAware
Athletes’ individual skills will also be enhanced by being a part of a team in a healthy competitive and supportive space. “You get to find new ways to overcome adversity in a safe environment,” Lam states. These skills will thus motivate them to exuberate confidence and conquer their goals, both inside and outside of racing.
The Mini Maniac event is the largest sanctioned kids triathlon on Long Island with 135 participants in 2022, and an expected attendance of 200 racers this year. To register for Mini Maniac, visit www.runsignup.com/ minimaniac. Registration ends on September 15, 2023 at 1:30 PM EDT. Mini Maniacs is also seeking volunteers for this event. Anyone who is interested may sign up at www.runsignup.com/Race/ Volunteer/NY/MountSinai/ MiniManicYouthTriathlon.
data also indicated there were an average of 7,000 to 9,000 flight delays per day in the U.S. in the first half of 2023. No one wants to send off the last weekend of summer with a lengthy flight delay, so travelers who want to spend as much time as possible celebrating may want to drive rather than fly to their destinations.
• Drive during off-peak hours. Air travelers must cede some control over when to depart, but drivers can pick their own time to hit the road. Starting a trip during off-peak hours, such as early in the morning or even after rush hour on Thursday night, may enable drivers to avoid traffic.
• Travel light. Warm weather tends to linger into Labor Day weekend, so there’s no need to pack heavy. That’s especially noteworthy for air travelers. The lighter
travelers can pack for a flight, the less likely they will need to check a bag. That decreases the likelihood that bags will be lost if a flight is delayed or canceled, and it also allows travelers to deplane and leave the airport without having to wait around to claim their bags.
• Extend the trip. An extra day at the end of the trip can help travelers avoid the crowds on the way home. Parents may need to travel on Labor Day if school is already in session or starting on Tuesday. But travelers who have no reason to rush home can get an extra day of fun in the sun and travel home on a day that tends to be less hectic.
Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer. Travelers can keep various strategies in mind to get the most out of summer’s swan song.

Come Support Neighbors Facing Food Insecurity!
Food Collection Drive Friday, Sept. 1 At Stop & Shop, 3126 Jericho Turnpike, East Northport
On Friday, Sept. 1, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island summer food collection drive comes to East Northport.
Food collection bins and a drive-through option will be set up at the Stop & Shop supermarket at 3126 Jericho Turnpike, East Northport, where members of the public can donate nonperishable items and household essentials for neighbors facing food insecurity.
With your help and the generous donations of fellow Long Islanders, the initiative aims to collect the equivalent of 50,000 meals during July, August and September. Last year, thanks to your kindness, the equivalent of more than 42,000 meals was collected for the Power to Feed Long Island initiative.
Hundreds of thousands of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout the year. During the summer months, there is a significant reduction in food donations to local food banks, pantries and programs. Compounding the issue, children are not in school where they can receive free and reducedcost breakfast and lunch. In addition, the pandemic and the increased inflation rate have further strained local food pantries and emergency feeding programs served by Island Harvest.
Please consider donating some of the healthy foods you feed your own family, pet food or personal care items, including:
Nonperishable food (no glass jars, please): Healthy varieties of canned foods, such as low-sodium beans, vegetables, soups, pasta sauces and tomato varieties, tuna and chicken, along with
rice, pasta, popcorn kernels, nut butters, olive and canola oil, spices and pet food.
Household essentials: Toilet paper, paper towels, hand sanitizer, laundry detergent and dish soap.
Personal care items: Toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner, feminine care products and shaving products, antibacterial wipes and washcloths.
Baby care items: Diapers, wipes, formula, creams, ointments and baby wash.
If you cannot participate on this day, please consider making a donation online at www.psegliny.com/feedli
– Island Harvest estimates every dollar is the equivalent of two meals.
The schedule of Power to Feed collection drives is as follows:
· Sept. 1 8 a.m.
– 3 p.m. Stop & Shop3126 Jericho Turnpike, East Northport
· Sept. 15 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Stop & Shop - 575 West Montauk Highway, West Babylon
Onsite, information will be available from PSEG Long Island on electric service payment plans and programs and ways to save money through energy efficiency options. For additional information on Power to Feed Long Island, visit www.psegliny.com/feedLI.

John Coltrane, Count Basie, Lloyd Trotman, and Guy Lombardo were honored on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum during a special musical tribute celebrating the legendary jazz greats laid to rest on the property.
Guests attended the free event which was the first tribute Pinelawn has ever organized to honor the legendary jazz musicians. Syosset High School
To assist property owners who missed the August 10th deadline for paying their 2023 General taxes, Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents that they can still pay the bill August 31st with the State mandated 2% late payment penalty while avoiding additional interest and fees from accruing on their property.
Late payers should immediately contact the Receiver’s office at (516) 624-6400 if
they did not receive a second notification with a delinquent tax bill. Payments postmarked after August 31st cannot be accepted since the collection warrant will have expired. Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West Street, Mineola, New York 11501.
In September, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to all property owners with taxes in arrears.
Receiver Pravato advises homeowners
who fall under those circumstances to contact the Nassau County Treasurer at (516) 5712090 to determine the amount due. They may also visit the Nassau County Treasurer’s Office at 1 West Street in Mineola.
Receiver Pravato noted, “Taxpayers in the Town of Oyster Bay are already paying some of the highest property taxes in the nation, and I want to make sure that our residents do not pay more out of pocket than they have to.”

“Lifestyle choices play a vital role in healthy aging and brain health, and it’s never too soon to start,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s President & CEO. “Eating right, exercising the body and mind, getting proper sleep, and being socially active all contribute to healthy aging and good

brain health, and can potentially reduce the risk of developing a dementiarelated illness.”
AFA offers the following 10 steps for healthy aging: Eat Well-Adopt a lowfat diet high on fruits and veggies, like strawberries, blueberries, and broccoli. Take daily vitamins. Limit intake of red meats, fried and processed foods, salt, and sugar. In general, foods that are “heart healthy” are also “brain healthy.”
Stay Active-Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain and can also help improve mood and overall wellbeing.
Brisk walking benefits brain health, while aerobics can boost your heart rate, and weight training builds strength
and flexibility.
Learn New ThingsChallenge your brain by starting a new hobby like playing tennis, learning to speak a foreign language, trying a cooking class, or something you have not done before. Even something as simple as brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand stimulates the brain by forcing it to think outside of its normal routine.
Get Enough SleepGetting a consistent sleep every night is key; at least seven to nine hours is ideal. Having a good sleep environment is also helpful. Insomnia or sleep apnea can have serious physical effects and negatively affect memory and thinking.
Mind Your MedsMedication can affect
everyone differently, especially as you age. When getting a new medication or something you have not taken in a while (whether over the counter or prescription), talk to your doctor or local pharmacist.
Stop Smoking and Limit Alcohol-Smoking can increase the risk of other serious illnesses, while too much alcohol can impair judgment and cause accidents, including falls, broken bones, and car crashes.
Stay ConnectedSocial interaction and maintaining an active social life are very important for brain health, cognitive stimulation and mood. Invite friends and family over for a meal, board games, or just to hang out. Engaging in

Become A Volunteer With The Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program
Compassionate women and men—both breast cancer survivors and nonbreast cancer survivors—are being sought as volunteers. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is a non-profit that has been advocating and supporting the community for 43 years. The virtual training will take place on four consecutive Mondays: October 30, November 6, November 13 and November 20, from 10 am to 1 pm. Attendance at all four sessions is essential. Volunteers will be trained in the following areas: community outreach, educational presentations, speaking engagements, publicity and fundraising. Those who have had breast cancer will also be trained to respond to calls to the Hotline.
Here’s what some of the program’s community of volunteers have to say about their experience:
Jeannie, age 68, from West
Babylon; diagnosed in 1986. I wanted to give back to the community and let women know they’re not alone. It was life-altering when I started volunteering 31 years ago. I speak Spanish and do lots of outreach, especially to underserved communities.
Lori, age 66, from Greenlawn; diagnosed in 2012
I am recently retired and wanted to do something to help people coping with breast cancer. I wish when I was diagnosed I had known about the hotline where there were others who had “been there.” Someone to tell me “take a breath, I’m here for you. I know what you are feeling.” I have done several library outreaches and am involved with our new book club.
Tanya, age 55, from Wyandanch; diagnosed in 2020
I received so much support when I called the hotline that I want to

provide that kind of help to others. I do peer support for two women—linking one woman recently diagnosed to resources and speaking with the mother of someone diagnosed with breast cancer who was having a hard time. I’ve also lobbied in Albany for more funds for the program.
Jeanne, age 51, from Elmont
Although I don’t have breast cancer, as a nurse, I know that many women do not know about breast health and are going undiagnosed. I am originally from Haiti and so am able to speak with callers in French and Creole, as well as English.
The process of becoming a volunteer involves having an initial interview, followed by the four training sessions. After the final session, there is an exit interview.
