One Town, One Book For the past few years, ‘One Town, One Book,’ the well-established, national program that seeks to challenge communities to read the same book and discuss reactions with friends and families has been a summertime fixture in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year, as was announced by Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia, the program has returned with a new focus, as ‘One Town, One Book: Oyster Bay Reads, Jr.’ The program, which kicked off at the end of May, runs through the summer. “For the past few summers, the Town has sponsored One Town, One Book, with two clear goals in mind: to promote literacy, and to create a greater sense of community within our Town,” Councilwoman

Continued From 3 Alesia said. “In only a few short years, the program flourished and helped some to forge an enduring relationship with literature that may not have been there before. I am both proud and excited to have it return this summer and offer our younger residents the chance to more actively
participate. This year we will be focusing the thrust of the program, affectionately referred to as ‘Oyster Bay Reads, Jr.,’ to grade school and middle school children, in a summer long celebration of the works of Dr. Seuss, in honor of what would be his 110th birthday.” Councilwoman Alesia went on to comment that
in celebration of the works of Theodor Seuss Geisel, more commonly known as ‘Dr. Seuss,’ the program for this year’s Oyster Bay Reads, Jr. will be two-fold: a Town-wide poster contest based on one of the works of Dr. Seuss, as well as a ‘reading log’ chronicling a participants involvement in the program. “This year, to encourage

the creativity of our youngest residents, Oyster Bay Reads, Jr. will be ongoing throughout the summer,” Councilwoman Alesia stated. “First, kids will be asked to create a poster based on one of Dr. Seuss’ works of their choosing, which can be submitted to their local library for display until winners are selected. Secondly, kids will be encouraged to read (or have their parents read to them or with them) a minimum of five Dr. Seuss books over the summer, and fill out a ‘reading log’ chronicling the works they’ve read.” The Councilwoman noted that reading logs, which can be downloaded from the Town’s website or the One Town, One Book Facebook page, should be returned to the Councilwoman either via email at ralesia@ oysterbay-ny.gov or by
mail to Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia, Oyster Bay Town Hall, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Councilwoman Alesia stated that program participants have the summer through August 15th to read the works of Dr. Seuss and submit logs and posters. In addition to these contests, each library within the Town has yet again enthusiastically joined up with the Town to sponsor ‘Oyster Bay Reads, Jr.‘ events and programs at their branches, to tie in with this year’s selection. The Town-wide grand finale will take place on Thursday, August 21st at 7 p.m., at the PlainviewOld Bethpage Public Library, located at 999 Old Country Road, in Plainview. Councilwoman Alesia encourages residents to check back with the Town’s website, www.oysterbaytown.com,
as well as the official Facebook page of ‘Oyster Bay Reads, Jr.’ for regularly updated information. “This year’s program is something that I truly feel will provoke the interest of our younger residents, as well as help foster a love of reading in them,” Councilwoman Alesia stated. “I urge any interested resident to contact my office at 516.624.6364, and my staff will gladly discuss more in-depth with you the ways to get involved with ‘Oyster Bay Reads, Jr.’ this summer.”

our minds.” Councilman Muscarella has worked closely with Supervisor Venditto for many years on the Town’s blood drive. “The need for blood is continual, though, and the summer usually puts a strain on supplies. Donation drives, such as the ones sponsored by the Town, account for a large percentage of the blood collected by Long Island Blood Services. Without adequate assistance from volunteer blood donors, LIBS cannot meet its vital, life-saving mission and ensure quality health care delivery.” “Blood banks need to be prepared 365 days a year,” Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto said. “That is why people should always donate whenever they can. Donating is quick and easy and is an entirely safe procedure. All materials used during the process are sterile, disposable and used only once…by you. There is no danger of contracting any disease, including AIDS. The pint of blood you donate will never be missed by your body, which manufactures an equivalent amount in 24 hours. When broken down into component parts, one single pint of blood can be used to heal and help the bodies of three different people.” Councilman Muscarella went on to say that the locations for the blood drives are: Town Hall South Conference Room, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa (9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.); Town Hall North at the Blood Mobile, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.), the Department of Public Works War Room (Highway), 150 Miller Place (11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) and the Hicksville Athletic Center, 167 Broadway (one block north of Old Country Road) Hicksville (2:30

Taking Home National Awards Two aspiring cinematographers from Nassau BOCES Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center (Barry Tech) took home bronze medals from the 50th annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference Championships (NLSC) held in Kansas City, Missouri in June. Daniel Wolff from East Meadow High School and Zachary Posner
from Plainedge High School were third in the nation in the Digital Cinema Production contest. The students proved their excellence in cinematography in their short film “The Gift.” The award-winning film demonstrated the effects and difficulties surrounding Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and the protagonist ultimately began to overcome the disorder when he focused
on his passion for writing. “The Gift” was filmed and edited at on-site at the competition in only a few days and can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=Tj51AE0tUeo. The team’s hard work and creativity exhibited the skills and knowledge they acquired studying under Nassau BOCES Barry Tech Video Production and Digital Filmmaking teacher, Robyn Cavalieri. “We are so proud of
our national champions,” says Nassau BOCES Barry Tech Principal James Clark. “Their passion, determination and enthusiasm for filmmaking, along with the hands-on training they’ve received in our Video Production and Digital Filmmaking program will help them to continue to succeed. It’s such a pleasure to watch our students learn, grow and achieve.”
More than 15,000 people – including students, teachers and business partners – participated in the week-long event. Over 6,000 outstanding career and technical education students, all who won their state contests, competed in 99 different trade, technical, and leadership fields. Students worked against the clock and each other to prove their expertise in their chosen field.
Each year, Nassau BOCES Barry Tech sends its students to SkillsUSA competitions. Thanks to the students’ efforts and the staff’s focus on preparing the students, many are selected for the SkillsUSA State and National competitions and leave with prestigious awards.

Blood Drive Set Continued From 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.). Councilman Muscarella added that in order to qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old…16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note… weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. The Councilman noted that all blood types are needed, especially O positive and O negative.
The Town will provide refreshments for everyone who donates. Anyone requiring additional information should contact Nancy Haarstick at 516.624.6304. “And remember, there are many people out there hoping you are the type to give blood,” Councilman Muscarella said. “More important, you may also be the ‘right type’ for a patient waiting for the gift of life.” “I can think of few
more important gifts a person can give than a pint of blood,” Supervisor Venditto stated. “And if you want to talk about making a difference, one pint of blood could be the difference between life and death for one or more recipients. If you are not able to give, perhaps you know someone who can. Please help us make this blood drive a huge success. Always keep in mind that we may someday be the ones in need.”

Stop Counting, Start Living By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Last time I checked the calendar, it was August. Not back-to-school, not Halloween, and certainly not Christmas. And yet, if you look in the stores these days, you would think it was time to start digging out the decorations and making those shopping lists. I’m all for preparation and not waiting until the absolute last minute, but isn’t this all a little much? When I was a student in school, I didn’t consider it the “end of summer” until the end of August, as Labor Day approached. The beginning of August meant that summer was still only half over, with
just over a month of fun in the sun remaining. Plenty of beach days, baseball games, outdoor concerts, BBQs… But for parents and teachers, I suppose this isn’t the case. It’s all about the mad dash to get back into some sort of routine. Of course, nowadays, my routine is pretty much the same throughout the year, summer or winter. But still, I try to revel in the slightly laid back atmosphere that this season brings. Instead of driving home in the dark to sit on the couch in front of the TV, the added daylight hours provide some motivation to check out one of the many waterfront dining options
on Long Island, or perhaps attend one of the free summer concerts featured at the area parks. (Just don’t forget to check the weather forecast before heading out!) It’s August 6th. AUGUST 6th. Absorb it. Savor it. Live it. Stop checking the days off the calendar in a manic countdown to the next socalled marker of time… time that, before you know it, will have passed, un-enjoyed. So put away the Christmas lights, hold off on the pumpkin picking and don’t pack the bathing suit away quite yet. Relax. You’ll have plenty of time for all that in a few months. But not now.

Michael Szczesniak and Nicole Piccolomini planted the seeds for their operatic futures at Hicksville High School, and now they’ve gained international acclaim. The Hicksville graduates recently performed at the Caramoor Festival in Katonah, NY, which is a major accomplishment in opera. While attending Hicksville High School, Szczesniak, who changed his name to Michele Angelini to honor his Italian heritage, and Piccolomini spent many hours in the high school chorus room sightreading opera arias, art songs and theatre numbers with the late Dan Kristoff. Both students were featured soloists several times with symphonic orchestra, string ensemble, concert choir and madrigal singers. At Hicksville, Piccolomini was Winifred in Once Upon a Mattress, Nettie in Carousel and Kate in Kiss Me Kate.
Angelini went to Julliard Pre-College on bassoon and was selected to the All-National Orchestra. In 2004, when the Little Theater at Hicksville High School was rededicated as the Kristoff Theater, Angelini and Piccolomini performed arias. “These fabulous young musicians never looked back after hearing the possibilities in the world of opera performance,” their teacher Amy Noll said. “Their focus, hard work and talent have become a treasure of musical memories and friendship for me.” Angelini, a tenor, has taken the opera scene by storm. He made his European debut in 2006 as the Conte di Libenskof in Il viaggio a Reims at the prestigious Rossini Opera Festival. He credits Hicksville High School for playing a major role in his artistic development. “To this day, I feel enormously fortunate to have had the kinds of teachers I did in the Hicksville Music Department,” Angelini
said. “There was never a moment in my development when my curiosity and thirst for musical knowledge were not equaled by the expertise of my teachers.” Piccolomini, a mezzosoprano, will soon return to Opera Leipzig to reprise her acclaimed Erda in Das Rheingold following her role debut with the company last year. She also makes her debut with Nederlandse Opera as Erste Norn in Götterdämmerung. “I loved being surrounded by people who were so full of passion and love for the arts,” she said regarding her time in Hicksville. “I craved to know as much as I could about musical theatre, opera and orchestral music. I remember sightreading arias over Dan Kristoff’s shoulder as he sat at the piano like it was yesterday.” The Hicksville School District is proud of these talented musicians and wishes them luck in all their future ventures.

POB Cares & Project PACE Plainview-Old Bethpage Cares (POB Cares) and Project Plainview Assisting Community Elders (Project PACE), programs of the Mid-Island Y JCC, are recruiting volunteers (18+ years-old) to help senior residents of Plainview-Old Bethpage. Volunteers are needed
to drive clients to local medical appointments, do grocery shopping and minor home repairs. Volunteers are also needed to be friendly visitors or telephone companions to homebound seniors. Training is provided. Flexible schedule volunteers can make a
difference in as little as two hours a week. If you are interested in volunteering or know someone 60+ years old who needs a volunteer, call Harriet Blatt, Volunteer Coordinator, at 516.822.3535, extension 345, or e-mail norc@ miyjcc.org.
In 2012, the Rockville Centre Fire Department received a federal grant for $865,225 to help attract 80 new volunteers to the RVCFD and provide incentives for specialty training. Now in its second year, the RVCFD has added 36 new members to the department and is hoping to build on that number. “The Rockville Centre Fire Department has over 100-years of tradition and service with an unwavering commitment to all who live in and around our Village,” commented Mayor Francis X. Murray, a 40-year member of Rescue 1. “This program allows that tradition to grow and flourish into the future.” The four-year recruitment and retention program is funded through the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response [SAFER] program, administered through the United States Department of Homeland
Security and FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The grant also provides tuition reimbursement for members attending college, physicals for new members, personal protective gear that includes a helmet, bunker gear (coats and pants), a protective hood, gloves and boots. In addition, each new member receives station gear that includes work shirts, work pants, hats, and work boots. “Each and every day, firefighters in our community sacrifice their time and risk their safety to keep our loved ones safe,” added Chief John Thorp. “I can’t stress how important volunteerism is to the ongoing success and well-being of our department. Programs like this help to enhance firefighter safety and provide invaluable service for our community.” With 348 volunteers,
the RVCFD remains one of the largest all Volunteer Fire Departments in New York State. During 2013, the RVCFD answered more than 2,400 alarms, including over 1,400 calls for emergency medical services; over 1,000 other alarms which included over 100 automobile accidents, many with personal injury, over 400 reports of fire alarms, 65 carbon monoxide alarms, vehicle fires, brush fires, elevator rescues, and other incidents. In addition, the department acted on over 30 requests for mutual aid assistance from neighboring fire departments. Residents who wish to join the Rockville Centre Fire Department are urged to stop by any of the five firehouses on a Sunday morning, or may call 516678-9320, for information on becoming a Firefighter, Fire Medic or a Junior Firefighter.
Film Festival Submissions From November 3rd through 9th, the Gold Coast Arts Center in collaboration with the Town of North Hempstead will present the 4th annual Gold Coast International Film Festival (GCIFF), and everyone’s invited - again - to join us for fantastic films, parties, panels, and fanfare! The feature films at the Festival are curated and the category is not open to individual submissions; however there is still room for the very best in short films to make the cut and submissions are being accepted at the website at www. goldcoastfilmfestival. org through the online platform Film Freeway. Short film awards include both a jury award and an audience award, and are accompanied by prizes, which may include rental equipment, postproduction services, etc. The late deadline for
submissions is September 26th. The festival has brought the latest Hollywood hits and Indie favorites to the Gold Coast of Long Island over the past several years, and add A-list celebrities and unforgettable events to the mix and its easy to see why GCIFF has become the “go to” Festival for film buffs (it is also the last major film festival on the East Coast before Awards season). Last year, the Festival honored legendary actor, Paul Sorvino (GoodFellas, Bulworth, The Cooler) with a Lifetime Achievement Award during their Annual Benefit Gala. The Gala also honored Susie Essman, (co-star of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm) with the Artist of Distinction Award for Comedy. From across the “pond” young British actress Bonnie Wright (of the Harry Potter film
series), Melanie Lynsky (2 ½ Men, Ever After) and Emmy Nominated Actor, Jason Ritter (Parenthood) among others also attended last year’s festivities. GCIFF presents sensational events to SRO audiences year-round. Some of the past highlights include: an exclusive pre-release screening of The Great Gatsby with Baz Luhrmann, plus screenings and events with such notable names as Edward Burns, Brian Dennehy, Phil Donahue, Isabella Rossellini, Bill Plympton, Bruce Dern, Joan Allen, Gabriel Byrne, Celeste Holm, Eli Wallach, Robert Klein, Nelson DeMille, Francis Ford Coppola, Eli Wallach, Anne Jackson, Alan King and Kelli O’Hara to name a few. For a complete festival line up visit www. goldcoastfilmfestival.org for more information.

Creative Cups Workshop A local art studio is offering a workshop at Adelphi University on Thursday, August 21st, to help people design their own Creative Cups - turning ordinary bras into works of art - for the Creative Cups Fund Raiser that will be held next March. Artists Denise Collins and Laura Bykowski, owners of The Mermaid Art Studio of Long Beach, will guide participants in the design of their Creative Cups and help them reach their artistic vision. They will also help participants with the registration and submission process. The completed bras are due by October 15th, 2014. The workshop will run from 10 a.m. to noon and is located on the Adelphi
campus at Adele and Herbert J. Klapper Center for Fine Art, Ceramics Studio, Room 104, located at the south end of the campus off of Cambridge Avenue. BYOB (bring your own bra-36C underwire, no pushup) and for $15, all other materials are included. Supplies include yarn, beads, buttons, trimmings, fabric, thread, paper, paints (watercolor and acrylic), tissue paper, feathers, crayons, markers, pastels, glue/hot glue, wire, duct tape, stencils, stamps, scrapbook materials and various odds and ends. You may also bring your own material if you have a special theme in mind. Please note there is a $25 registration fee payable
to Adelphi University for participation in Creative Cups. Only the first 200 bras will be accepted. In fact, many 2014 high school graduates and “Pipeline Scholars” will continue their education this fall at leading colleges, including Columbia University, Harvard University, Howard University, Northeastern University, Fordham University, Hofstra University and other outstanding institutions. Dedicated to improving the lives of young people in poor communities, the Pinkerton Foundation has generously awarded a $50,000 grant to benefit the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine’s Medical Scholars Pipeline Program (MSPP), an initiative designed to expose high-achieving minority students to careers in the healthcare professions with the goal of diversifying the future healthcare workforce. The Pinkerton Foundation is an independent grant-making organization founded by Robert Allan Pinkerton, the Chairman and CEO of Pinkerton’s, Inc., one of the nation’s oldest and largest security companies. Established in 1966, the Pinkerton Foundation supports community-based programming that combines capable leadership, engaging activities, mentoring by caring adults, and academic training to further economically disadvantaged students in New York City. At the School of Medicine, the MSPP was created as part of the school’s core mission to advance and nurture a diverse and inclusive learning community. It is a designed as a multi-year four-week summer program for high-achieving students from groups underrepresented in medicine. The Pinkerton grant funds will allow the School of Medicine to continue providing Kaplan (P)SAT preparation courses for the 11th and 12th graders, CPR/AED training classes, as well as a host of educational activities for an elite group of

The organization raises public awareness and fills the shelves of local food banks through this annual event comprised of sculptures made entirely of non-perishable cans of food. “Through the spirit of competition, we are excited to engage the A/E/C community in our shared
mission to fight hunger here in our region,” said Tracy Lobdell, Executive Director, Canstruction® Long Island, Inc. “We are especially happy to welcome back our past teams, and look forward to welcoming new organizations and schools in this year’s competition.” Registration is open until August 22nd for teams to compete in the design competition. Participants can be members of Architectural, Engineering or Construction Firms and their vendor firms, students at colleges with

Since 2007, Canstruction® Long Island has held its annual competition where teams of design and construction professionals, college students and middle and high school students led by architects and engineers, showcase their talent and creativity by creating giant, self-supporting structures out of cans of nonperishable food. Student Teams are mentored by professionals in the architecture, engineering, design and construction fields, which provides the younger students with
exposure to these potential career fields at an early age, and gives the older students an opportunity to develop relationships with professionals that they can possibly intern or interview with in the future. The structures are on display to the public for 10 days, after which the cans are donated to Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank to feed the more than 300,000 Long Islanders that are affected by hunger and/or food insecurity. Attendees are asked to bring one can of food for admission to the
Advance Care Plans The United States population is rapidly aging. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), by 2030, the number of Americans aged 65 and older will more than double to 71 million older Americans, comprising
roughly 20 percent of the U.S. population. With age comes the added burden of dealing with illnesses such as heart failure, dementia and cancer, any one of which can leave you unable to make decisions involving
your care. Unless you have a plan in place, the burden will fall on your family. Protect your loved ones from having to make life and death decisions on your behalf by developing an advance care plan today. The Heart Failure
Society of America has put together a brochure that will take you through the various steps you’ll need to consider. Log on to Abouthf.org to request a copy. (ARA)
