Moriches Field Brewing Company received $18,750 to revitalize an empty downtown space.

(Cheers to that.)

Revitalization grants are just one of the ways we help businesses on Long Island and in the Rockaways. For Moriches Field Brewing Company, a grant from our economic development program was a perfect fit to help them renovate a previously vacant property. A discount through our Vacant Space Revival Program saved them more than $4,000 on their electric bills, and rebates for upgrading to LED lighting are keeping them saving month after month.

Helping revitalize our Island, one business at a time, is something we’re proud to be part of and something definitely worth celebrating.

Helping You Help Others

The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®

Canine

Companions

is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. They proudly o er their support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation, with their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) located right here on Long Island, in Medford.

Did you know this non-profit runs a Veterans Initiative™? Through this initiative they place service dogs with veterans. Canine Companions’ expertly trained service dogs can perform physical tasks to enhance independence including opening doors, picking up prosthetics and alerting a veteran with hearing loss to important sounds in their environment. With the increase in veterans facing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Canine Companions launched a program in 2018 to directly place service dogs with veterans with PTSD. Dogs are trained to identify each veteran’s unique stressors and perform tasks that directly disrupt escalation of symptoms, thus enhancing their quality of life. The dog supports their handler in crowded public situations by creating barriers and distance that might provoke anxiety for individuals with PTSD. Additional tasks such as nightmare interruption, turning on lights and retrieving items are taught to support veterans’ daily lives.

“When I see a veteran with a Canine Companions service dog, it still gives me goosebumps,” said Colonel E. David Woycik Jr., a highly decorated retired Army O cer and an active Canine Companions Board Member. “I see the satisfaction these veterans get...

the fulfillment of their lives through these dogs. The service dogs are not just partners, they are their right hand, their left hand, their legs and more. We can’t pay the veterans back enough, and I’m proud to be part of an organization serving them.”

Mr. Woycik helped organize a Veterans Day event, Salute Independence , which awards local veterans who continue to serve their communities.

Thanks to his tireless work, this annual event has raised more than $500,000 in total so far to support the organization’s Veterans Initiative™.

Looking to make a di erence? You can become a Puppy Raiser with the Long Island Chapter today. Canine Companions volunteer puppy raisers provide specially-bred puppies a safe home, take them to obedience classes, serve up a healthy diet, provide socialization opportunities and give lots of love. Volunteers are warmly welcomed in other capacities as well, such as Front Desk Reception, General O ce Support, Puppy Transporter and Event Support, amongst other fields. Without loyal volunteers, this organization couldn’t fulfill their mission, so they are beyond grateful for each individual that gives their time and e orts to help.

Pictured Above: Ruby’s Whisper

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon, a local small business serves vulnerable communities, such as seniors and homeless individuals across Long Island. Owner Eileen Scanlon has a heart for helping others and is actively involved in doing so. When she became aware of the fast growing rate of displaced/homeless veterans, she decided to embark on an effort to create an “intentional home share” for these individuals.

“In New York, rents and home prices are skyrocketing, which is forcing many to leave the state,” said Scanlon. “Even for those who stay here, owning a home is becoming quite unattainable. I wanted to embark on a mission that allowed me to offer a home for veterans in need, where they can live under one roof. They would share expenses and all upkeep the residence, allowing for camaraderie to blossom, but we would keep prices low.”

With a head full of dreams and a heart full of passion, Eileen purchased Ruby’s Whisper, an old 1700’s Tavern turned home in Hyde Park, NY, which she is now converting to a home share

for four to five low income veterans. The property is just a stones throw away from Marist College and the Vanderbilt/Roosevelt Estates, with public transportation nearby.

“The home will offer comfort, solace, space and a feeling of yesteryear,” said Eileen. “There are five lovely sized bedrooms, a spacious living room and cozy kitchen. The home will be furnished with the help of selfless individuals/ organizations that kindly donated items. The backyard offers veterans the ability to grow their own food and the veterans that stay with us can also utilize two large sheds for storage and there are two separate driveways in which will accommodate four vehicles. A family style home share like this for vets might mean the difference between paying rent and being able to pay their monthly food bill; a home share allows them to keep their monthly expenses much lower compared to if they were renting a place on their own.”

The home is undergoing renovations that will hopefully be finalized by the end of this summer.

“I have titled this whole project Heye’s Haven for Heroes, and I’m looking to have it fully incorporated as a 501C3 Non-Profit Organization as soon as possible. I’m so grateful to have this opportunity at this stage in my life, where I can pay forward in a way that I feel would make my father and grandfather, both veterans, rather proud.”

A GoFundMe Page has been created, where donations are being accepted to help assist with the price of renovations. If you are interested in making a donation, please scan the QR below or visit www.heyeshaven.com/ about-us and click VISIT OUR GOFUNDME PAGE. “I’m so thankful for any donations, they truly help make a difference.”

If you are a veteran in need that is interested in learning more, such as becoming a resident at this special home, please contact Eileen Scanlon at 516.477.0469.

Commuters, Business Owners & Officials Rally Against LIRR Service Cuts Amid $800 Million MTA Payroll Tax Hike Plan

Following the launch of an online petition signed by over 2,000 commuters, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and a dozen local officials joined with commuters, business owners and residents to rally against New York State’s plan to increase the MTA Payroll Mobility Tax while cutting Long Island Rail Road service.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph

Saladino stated, “The MTA must immediately restore service cuts, and State lawmakers must stop their plans to increase the MTA Payroll Tax. Higher payroll taxes will only hurt taxpayers, businesses, governments and selfemployed individuals at a time when they can least afford it. Between out of control property taxes, high utility bills, soaring interest rates and record

inflation, Long Island residents are already stretched thin! A payroll tax increase is the last thing we need!”

The Governor’s proposed budget includes an $800 million MTA Mobility Payroll Tax Hike proposal planned for employers, local governments and self-employed individuals. From eliminating eastbound trains during rush hour and increasing the time between trains to making individual commutes longer, the MTA’s new schedule is detrimental to a community that already faces decreased train service. On the north shore alone, nearly 2,000 commuters have signed a petition against changes to LIRR service on the Oyster Bay Line. What’s worse, these service cuts come as the Governor has proposed an increase to

the MTA Payroll Mobility Tax. For all the above reasons, Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Michele

Johnson, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh, Town Clerk Richard LaMarca, Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato, North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, State Senators Jack Martins and Steve Rhoads, State Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz, Centre Island Village Mayor Lawrence Schmidlapp, Oyster Bay Cove Mayor Charles Goulding, Upper Brookville Mayor Elliot Conway and others joined with business owners and commuters to denounce these plans.

“East Side Access was billed as a transformative project for our area and while for some that may be true, for riders on the Oyster Bay line that absolutely has not been the case. The new schedule has given riders on the Oyster Bay line less trains, longer transfer times, and significantly longer commutes each day,” North Hempstead Town Supervisor Supervisor Jen DeSena said. “The bottom line is riders on this line were made to shoulder some of the financial burden for this project but have seen

almost no advantages from it upon its completion. I am calling on the MTA and LIRR to fix this botched rollout and add service back to the Oyster Bay line that was taken away as part of the Grand Central Madison rollout.”

“The MTA has delivered a commuter crisis of its own making. Long Islanders have been sold a bill of goods. When the MTA was trying to build public support for the East Side Access and Third Track projects, it pledged shorter travel times, fewer stops and more options for our commuters. We now see that despite the nearly $15 billion that’s been spent, we have fewer trains, longer ride times, and overcrowded cars. We deserve better,” said Senator Jack Martins.

Senator Steve Rhoads stated, “Time and again Long Islanders are being told by this Governor that we have to bail out an MTA notorious for service cuts, safety concerns, scheduling issues and fiscal mismanagement. We deserve better. The MTA has lost public trust and they must be held

accountable. The forensic audit we are demanding will help uncover the waste and abuse that plagues this agency and continues to rob commuters of the competent, efficient and safe transportation they deserve. Why don’t we stop the Hochul payroll taxes, congestion pricing or whatever the next gimmick will be and actually clean up the MTA? My constituents have had enough! We need a forensic audit now!”

Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz stated, “With all the increased trains, service cuts and schedule changes, the Oyster Bay line continues to be neglected and commuters are facing the consequences.

It’s clear that the MTA’s priorities are upsidedown and the need for a full time LIRR president is more important now than ever before. We need consistent leadership and viable funding to fix the problems commuters are facing rather than the proposed $800 million MTA Mobility Payroll Tax Hike that will only continue to take income from our residents without providing improved or increased service.”

Interesting Facts About The Month Of March

Millions of people look forward to the month of March every year. In the northern hemisphere, March 20 or 21 marks the beginning of spring, a season of rejuvenation in which individuals enjoy the first consistent periods of warm weather since the previous fall. Though the official start of spring is a much-anticipated event, each March, the month is more than just the end of winter. The following are some interesting facts about the month of March.

· March derives its name from “Martius,” which was the first month of the earliest Roman calendar. The Romans gave the month that name in honor of Mars, the Roman god of war, and Martius was considered the beginning of warfare season, which is a far cry from the beginning that March is now associated with.

· March is host to one of the more popular sporting events in the United States. March Madness is a single-elimination college basketball tournament featuring 68 Division I teams (there are separate tournaments for men’s and women’s basketball). Much of the ongoing popularity of the event is a byproduct of bracket pools. Those pools involve participants predicting the outcomes of each game of the tournament by filling out their own bracket. March Madness can trace its name back nearly a century to an Illinois High School Association official named H.V. Porter, though many credit broadcaster Brent Musburger with popularizing the term for

the annual tournament in the 1980s.

· Though March might be a great time of year for college basketball fans, it’s decidedly less so among their employers. Estimates from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., determined that employers lost roughly $13 billion in productivity in 2019 due to March Madness.

· March also is host to one of the most popular holidays in many parts of the globe. March 17 marks St. Patrick’s Day, a day initially designed to commemorate the life and contributions of St. Patrick, who is the patron saint of Ireland. During the twentieth century, St. Patrick’s Day became a celebration of Irish culture and has become synonymous with boisterous revelry, particularly in cities such as Chicago and New York.

· Many people find Daylight Saving Time in March inspiring. That’s because regions that still participate in DST turn the clocks forward each March. That adds an extra hour of evening sunlight and ensures people who work indoors all day long

get to enjoy some welcome sunlight at the end of each workday.

· The daffodil is the birth flower of March. For many people, these generally white and yellow flowers reinforce the feeling of rejuvenation that comes each March with the official beginning of spring.

· Students tend to enjoy March as well, as this is typically when Spring Break is scheduled. That’s especially common on college campuses and annually compels millions of college students to descend upon warm locales for a sunny and much-needed respite from their studies.

· Fans of inventor Alexander Graham Bell have reason to celebrate in March as well. That’s because the man behind the first phone call ever made patented the world’s first telephone on March 7, 1876.

March is known for coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb. In between that entry and exit, individuals can celebrate and enjoy a host of memorable and fun events.

POBJFKHS School-Based Enterprise Honored

Student-Run Business Is One Of Only Four In NYS To Earn Gold Recognition

The Hawks Nest, a school-based enterprise (SBE) at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School, earned Gold Re-Certification by DECA for the 2022-2023 school year. The student-run business was among 461 worldwide to achieve this recognition—and one of only four in New York State to do so. As part of this special re-certification, The Hawks Nest will be recognized during DECA’s International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida, in the spring.

An SBE is an entrepreneurial operation in a school setting that provides goods and services to meet the needs of the market. SBEs are managed and operated by students

as hands-on learning laboratories that integrate National Curriculum Standards in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. DECA advisors have utilized this effective educational tool for over four decades to provide their students with realistic and practical learning experiences that reinforce classroom instruction, enhance 21st century skill development, and prepare students for college and careers.

The Plainview-Old Bethpage DECA members who contributed to the certification were Sofie Nelson and Divbani Sabharwal. They were assisted by their DECA chapter advisor, Lindsay DeLucca.

As part of the re-

Student Artist Honored In Statewide Contest

certification process, DECA’s SBE certification program provides recognition for outstanding achievement by SBEs and motivates student-run organizations to strive for excellence and growth. SBEs can be certified at three levels: bronze, silver or gold. In order to apply for the certification, SBEs must submit extensive documentation that explains how the SBE demonstrates the practice of various marketing and retail standards. A review committee evaluates the documentation to determine which level of certification has been achieved. DECA’s schoolbased enterprise programs are sponsored by Intuit and Otis Spunkmeyer Inc.

STUDENT ARTIST HONORED - Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School 9th grader Issac Chen received honorable mention in the 2023 New York State Art Teachers Association Youth Art Month Flag Contest. Issac was among over 300 students who submitted artwork in this statewide contest. His art teacher is Nirel Weinstein. Founded in 1961, Youth Art Month takes place every March and is intended to emphasize the value of art education for all children and encourage support for quality school art programs. The theme for this year’s flag contest was Your Art, Your Voice. Photo courtesy of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District

Maier Urges Residents To Donate Blood As National Shortage Impacts Hospitals

With hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invites residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Tuesday, March 28th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

Councilwoman Maier stated, “Blood supplies are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many people as possible can be helped. Together, we can give the gift of life though

a simple blood donation.”

Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy Queen.

Councilwoman Maier added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. Donating blood at the Hicksville Athletic Center, is an incredible way for all of us to pitch in and give back, to help ease the burden of our Healthcare Heroes as they continue to provide lifesaving efforts.”

For additional information regarding the Town’s Blood Drive, contact the Town’s Public Information Office at (516) 6246380. To make an appointment to donate at this Blood Drive, sign up today at https://bit. ly/3IkK8U6

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Lou Imbroto invite residents to be “Freezin’ for a Reason” at the annual Polar Plunge benefitting Special Olympics New York on Saturday, March 25th at TOBAY Beach.

“Many of our residents head to TOBAY Beach for summer fun, but this event provides an enjoyable and charitable reason to spend a great day at the beach much sooner,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Participants will have an opportunity to prove their mettle and their compassion by wading into the chilly

Enjoy Corned Beef And Cabbage This St. Patrick’s Day

Corned beef and cabbage might not be a part of many people’s diet regimens throughout the year. But come March 17, it’s not uncommon to find people from all walks of life indulging in this beloved meal. March 17 marks the celebration of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Over the years, the day has also become a celebration of the Emerald Isle. Such celebrations tend to feature corned beef

Corned Beef and Cabbage

Serves 6 to 8

Cook a whole brisket with both sections together with all its fat. (You can trim off the fat after the meat is cooked.) Whole brisket and second-cut corned beef brisket are hard to find, but your supermarket should have first-cut corned beef vacuumpacked in plastic. Choose the fattiest piece in the case and treat it gently.

You can cook the cabbage and potatoes in the same water as the corned beef. Because the other vegetables need to be cooked in water that simmers more than the meat, scoop out water from the corned beef pot and cook the vegetables in a separate pot or pots.

1 4- to 5-pound corned beef brisket

1 teaspoon pickling spices

1 head cabbage

2 pounds boiling potatoes

6 to 8 small carrots (optional)

Parsnips (optional)

Turnips (optional)

Directions:

Place the corned beef in a pot that holds at least 5 quarts of water. Cover completely with cold water. Place over high heat and bring to a simmer.

As soon as bubbles start to break on the surface of the water, adjust the heat so the water simmers very, very gently. With a slotted spoon, skim off the residue that accumulates on the surface. When the residue stops coming to the surface, add the pickling spices.

Continue to cook, with bubbles just gently breaking on the surface, for 3 to 4 hours, until fork tender.

The meat can be safely held in its water for about 2 hours; reheat gently.

and cabbage, even though the dish may have little to do with Ireland (and even less to do with St. Patrick). The precise origins of the link between corned beef and St. Patrick’s Day remain a topic of debate, but some historians say the corned beef enjoyed today can be traced to New York City’s Irish immigrant population in the 19th and 20th centuries, who popularized salted meat made from brisket that was then sold by

Jewish butchers. Regardless of the authenticity of its link to Ireland, corned beef is delicious, and many modern Paddy’s Day celebrants wouldn’t think of going without it on March 17. Those who want to cook up their own can try this recipe for “Corned Beef and Cabbage” from Arthur Schwartz’s “New York City Food” (Stewart, Tabori & Chang).

Cook the vegetables until fork tender in separate pots of boiling fresh water or especially for the cabbage, use some of the water in which the corned beef was cooked.

Slice the corned beef and serve with mustard and/or horseradish on a platter, surrounded with some of the vegetables or with vegetables in a separate bowl.
