More than 15,000 women in our community this year will receive care at the Fortunato Breast Health Center at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital. On Saturday, May 4th, at 9 a.m., area residents can show their support for these women and the Center by taking part in the 19th Annual Families Walk for Hope. Hundreds of people take part each year in the five-

mile walk through scenic Port Jefferson and Belle Terre. They walk to support women with breast cancer. They walk in memory of a mother, sister, daughter, friend or co-worker whose life was cut short by the disease. And they walk to raise funds to help women receive state-of-the-art breast care at Mather Hospital. Sign up as an individual or form a team with family

and friends, co-workers or schoolmates. Register at www.matherhospital.org/ walk. Those who can’t be at the walk can register as a “virtual walker” or support an existing team. Call 631.476.2723 for more information. The $20 registration fee can be paid in advance or at the Walk. Registration begins at 8 a.m.

Remembering The Holocaust

On the eve of Wednesday, April 10th, the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County (HANC) hosted a unique Yom HaShoah V’HaGevurah Program. Architect Stephen Schwartz of Building Blocks Workshops came to build the Warsaw Ghetto out of lego with our students, their parents and

grandparents. The building of the Ghetto was followed by an informative walk through the model. The beautiful sight of families working together to recreate the ghetto is the ultimate revival for the Jewish people in the wake of the Holocaust. In classic HANC style

the program blended Jewish history with lessons from our past while strengthening intra and inter family bonds. This hands-on, meaningful program is surely a memory the children will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Registration for the Town of Oyster Bay Summer Recreation Program is currently underway by mail, according to Town Councilman Joe Pinto. “Now entering its 48th year, the Town of Oyster Bay Summer Recreation Program offers an exciting and affordable summer option,” Councilman Pinto stated. “Children between the ages of four and 12 are eligible to join this age-grouped program, which provides a safe, clean and stimulating atmosphere where they can enjoy themselves. Children are grouped into Early Childhood, 4-6; Juniors, 7-8; and Intermediates, 9-10 and Seniors, 11-12. Depending upon the children’s ages, the program offers trips, tournaments, shows and athletic events, including the 35th Annual Tobay Games.” “Families with children OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY MONTH - Nassau University Medical Center occupational therapists celebrate Occupational Therapy Month through a display in who participated in last the main lobby promoting the many ways occupational therapists promote health and year’s Summer Recreation Program will receive a improve function for their patients.

registration packet for this year’s program,” Councilman Pinto continued. “For all others, just call the Recreation Division of the Town’s Department of Parks at 516.797.4125 and you will be sent a registration packet.” Councilman Pinto noted that the fee for the Summer Recreation Program is $200 for one child, $275 for two children, and $75 for each additional child within a family of more than two. The registration deadline is June 14th. The Summer Recreation Program will be held at Marjorie R. Post (Massapequa), PlainviewOld Bethpage and SyossetWoodbury Community Parks, Ellsworth W. Allen Town Park in Farmingdale, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay, and Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing. The program begins Monday, July 1st, and runs through Friday, August 9th, with

no program on July 4th. There are both morning and afternoon sessions each day and children may attend both. However, no supervision is provided between 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Parents must make arrangements for their children during this time. “The Town’s Summer Recreation Program is an excellent opportunity for children to participate in wholesome activities right in their own communities,” Councilman Pinto commented. “Both parents and kids love the program. We’ve watched many kids begin as participants in Summer Recreation and return later to spend summers working as counselors in the same program.” For more information about the Town of Oyster Bay Summer Recreation Program, contact the Town Parks Department Summer Recreation Office at 516.797.4125.
