Lindenhurst Village Hall staff recently celebrated the 86th birthday of long-time Village resident, Firefighter, and Village employee William “Bill” Schrader. The Schrader family has been a pillar of the Lindenhurst community

since Bill’s parents, William & Gladys, moved here in 1948, and opened Schrader’s Restaurant. Bill has been a member of the Lindenhurst Fire Department for 68 years, and is still employed by the Village as a Public Safety Officer. Bill is also a

very active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, the Sunrise Square Club, and is on the Board of the Breslau Cemetery. The Village Hall staff celebrated Bill’s birthday with a delicious birthday cake, and a heartfelt round of “Happy Birthday!”

Why You Need Advisors (and Truth Tellers) in Business and Life

Running a business, and for that matter, running your life, is not a solo act. Behind every successful leader or entrepreneur is often a team of trusted advisors. These people aren’t just mentors or consultants; they are “truth tellers.” They are the ones who tell you what you need to hear, not just what you want to hear. And today, truth tellers are more important than ever. A good truth teller should challenge your thinking, point out blind spots, and help you see the potential pitfalls before you step into them.

For business owners, this might be a financial advisor who warns against reckless spending, or a peer who questions whether your new product idea really solves a customer problem. For others, it could be a friend or spouse who helps you keep your priorities in check when work starts to take over your life.

A strong advisor doesn’t sugarcoat the facts, but they don’t simply want to tear you down, either. The best advisors find the right balance between encouragement and accountability. They ask tough questions: “Have you thought this through?” “Is this really the best use of your time and money?” “What’s your plan if this doesn’t work?”

These relationships can mean the difference between growth and falling behind, or between

a crisis averted and one that could’ve been avoided. Advisors offer perspective. They’ve either walked the road you’re on or have the vision to help you see the bigger picture.

But here’s the thing: you MUST be open to hearing the hard truths. This means putting your ego aside and be willing to engage in honest, sometimes uncomfortable conversations. It’s not always easy—but it’s always worth it.

So, whether you’re just starting out or have been in business for years, take a moment to ask yourself: Who are my truth tellers? Who helps me stay grounded, focused, and honest? And if you don’t have anyone in that role, it’s time to find them.

Because no matter how smart, driven, or experienced you are, you will always do better with the right advisors by your side.
