Insurance Leap-Frog:

The Game of the Decade

While talking to your friends, neighbors and family has the topic of conversation changed to the high cost of insurance. Everyone’s Home and Auto insurance premiums have gone through the roof, regardless of whether they have filed a claim. A result of the pandemic is that folks are running to switch to a lower priced carrier…..only to have the new carrier then raise that premium. And, so the game continues. We leap to the next carrier.

Insurance is a pool of money. Customers pay money into the pool and the pool pays out to cover claims. Unfortunately, over the last few years, the pool has gone dry. Unfathomable weather events have surprised insurers. No one could

Insurance Tips And Information

expect wild-fires to erupt in more than 20% of the country. Nor could we expect an unprecedented number of tornados or Cat 4 and 5 hurricanes. And, no, these occurrences aren’t just elsewhere. New York saw over 20 tornados this past year or so, as well as wild fires and torrential rains that drowned people

in their basements and swept parts of the West Point highway down into the Hudson.

Auto insurers have paid out Comprehensive claims due to these weather events. Additionally, regular collisions cost insurers more than they’ve ever paid out before. Not only are the nuts on the road causing more accidents, but cars also cost more to repair due to advanced technology and parts shortages. So, what is the consumer to do when they learn that their neighbor pays half of what they do? First, realize that no two people are the same, nor are any two policies. Seldom are two ‘identical’ policies, issued by different companies the same. Intrinsic coverages are often hugely different. So, too, are each of our individual needs. What

is suitable coverage for one person is grossly inadequate for another person and too much insurance for another. What should you do? Talk to insurance agents until you find the

one you’re comfortable with. This should be no different than choosing your doctor. A good agent will learn about you, what you stand to lose, and what risks you present. Then, a proper line of coverage will be prescribed. Next, don’t compare the prices of different quotes but, rather, compare the different prescriptions. Choose the agent and policy based on the best value for reasonable coverage.

Expand your burger skills this barbecue season

Makes 4 servings

For caramelized shallots:

2 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 1⁄2 lbs. fresh shallots, peeled and sliced Salt, to taste

1 tablespoon sugar

For mushrooms:

2 tablespoons butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

1⁄2 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

DIRECTIONS:

For caramelized shallots:

1. Melt butter with olive oil in a thick-bottomed pan until the oil is shimmering. Add the sliced shallots and stir to coat. Cook, stirring on occasion, for 7 to 10 minutes. Do not let the shallots burn or dry out. Sprinkle the salt and sugar over the shallots.

2. Cook for about 30 minutes, stirring frequently. If shallots seem to be drying out, add a little water or oil to the pan. Shallots should be brown but not burned. Continue to cook and stir; scrape up all the browned bits stuck to the bottom of the pan, until the shallots are a deep, rich, browned color.

For mushrooms:

Melt butter with oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Stir in balsamic vinegar, garlic and mushrooms. Saute for 20 minutes, or until tender.

1 clove of garlic, minced

8 ounces fresh mushrooms, sliced

For hamburgers:

1 1⁄2 lbs. ground sirloin, chuck or round

Coarse salt, to taste

Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

4 slices Stilton cheese

4 hamburger rolls or sandwich rolls

1 tablespoon melted butter

Lettuce leaves

For hamburgers:

1. Moisten your clean hands with cold water and divide the ground beef in 4 equal portions. Form into a flattened ball. Season with salt and pepper.

2. Refrigerate until ready to cook.

3. Prepare the grill and preheat to high. Brush the grill grate with oil.

4. Place the prepared burgers on the hot grill grate. Grill for 5 to 7 minutes per side for medium, or until an instant read thermometer inserted through the side of the burger into the center reaches 160 F.

5. Brush the rolls with melted butter and toast them on the grill for about 45 seconds. Assemble the burgers, with lettuce leaves, Stilton cheese, caramelized shallots, and mushrooms. Serve.

RPM Raceway, an immersive racing and entertainment destination located in Farmingdale, officially set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for the World’s Longest Multi-Level Indoor Go-Kart Track. Spanning more than 3,515.7 feet across a two-story layout, the recordbreaking MegaTrack debuted at a special event featuring NASCAR Cup Series driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who completed the rst official lap on the newly launched track.

The achievement was con rmed during a live ceremony by official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS adjudicator, Andrew Glass, who presented the certi cation in front of a packed crowd of racing fans, in uencers, local officials and guests. The celebration included a live DJ set, giveaways, and exclusive race access to the newly unveiled track and new eet of highperformance go-karts and a high-tech experience that blends the thrill of real-world racing with digital gami cation.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr., winner of the 2023 Daytona 500, kicked off the event by challenging attendees to beat his official lap time, which was an opportunity that attracted aspiring racers and fans of professional motorsports alike. “I grew up around racing, but never imagined I would be a where I am today” shares Ricky. “My father had me riding go-karts when I was young and I developed a passion for this industry, but if you had said to me that I’d win the Daytona 500 one day, I wouldn’t have believed you.” The renowned driver spends about 38 weekends a year on the road racing, and during the week he is often partaking in community events just like this. “I’m happy to be a part of such a special occasion.”

RPM Raceway has been family owned since its opening in 2015. After its multi-million dollar investment, the destination has become highly sought after, offering a one-of-a-kind experience. “Every professional racer gets their start in a go-kart,” shares Andrew Farage, CEO and Co-Founder of RPM Raceway. “If we can unlock that passion for racing in our junior racers, then we’ve done something meaningful. This track isn’t just a record-breaker, it's a launchpad towards a lifetime hobby or professional career.”

Designed for all skill levels, the newly renovated raceway offers three tracks with over 40 dynamic corners, high-speed straightaways, underpasses, spiraling ramps, hairpin turns, and drops, creating an adrenaline-pumping challenge for racers with six unique track con gurations. The three new tracks can be combined into RPM’s signature MegaTrack, simultaneously accommodating up to 35 racers. In addition to racing, guests explored RPM’s gaming zone, which includes a Hyperdeck VR arena, arcade games and racing simulators. For more information, visit www.RPMRaceway.com.

May Is Military Appreciation Month

A major portion of the North American population is comprised of people who are actively serving in the Armed Forces or those who once did. USAFacts reports the military included 2,079,142 military personnel and 778,539 civilians as of September 2023. Military men and women work tirelessly and selflessly to defend their countries’ ideals and freedoms. Too often military members do not get the attention and acclaim they deserve.

The month of May, which celebrates Military Appreciation Month as well as Memorial Day, is a perfect time of year to honor those who have

• Improve the community. Veterans want the communities they call home to be the best they can be, and that can be achieved by community members pitching in to improve their towns and cities. Doing something honorable, like establishing a park in honor of veterans, can be a great way to improve a community and honor service personnel at the same time.

• Support veteran-friendly policies. By supporting policies and organizations that prioritize veterans’ rights, individuals are showing veterans they care. Policies that ensure veterans have access to services they need warrant everyone’s support.

• Ask a veteran to be a keynote speaker. Schools or businesses can ask military members to come in and speak to groups about their experiences. Newspapers and other local publications can write about veterans and share their stories.

• Pay respects to the country. A simple way to honor veterans is to embrace and showcase national pride. Flying the country’s flag in front of homes and businesses is a first step. Attending patriotic events, such as parades and memorials, also is a way to honor veterans and others.

• Keep cemeteries clean. Respect the hallowed land that is the final resting place for veterans by volunteering to tidy up around headstones and other markers. On key calendar dates, such as Memorial Day, help with the placement of flags on every veteran’s grave as a token of thanks for their sacrifice.

• Volunteer at a VA hospital. Now more than ever VA hospitals may be short-sta ed and have need of more volunteers to help with various services. Volunteer work can include visiting patients or running recreational activities, both of which can boost the spirits of veterans receiving care.

The Dangers Of Dented Cans

Dented cans have long been a source of confusion and concern for shoppers. They may be discounted and seem like a good deal, but some of those dented cans may not be safe to eat. Damaged cans may be harboring food that contains botulism and other toxins. According to the United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Services, if a can of food has a small dent but is otherwise in good shape, the food should be safe to eat. However, deeply dented cans should be discarded. Dented cans of food that are safe will have smooth dents or dents that are not on the seams of the can. A person should avoid sharp dents, dents in the seam and dents where the seam and the can meet. In addition, if the can is bulging or swollen, it should be avoided. Dents in a seam can let in air and bacteria. Deep dents may have left pinholes, again where bacteria can enter.
