FASHION SHOW FOR A GREAT CAUSE

Receiver of Taxes Jennifer Montiglio recently hosted Girl Scout Troop 605’s Glam, Give, Glamp Fashion Show at Town Hall. This year’s event was a fundraiser to raise money for the Cedar Beach Marina scouting campsite. Ten local groups (96 girls) from Babylon, West Babylon, North Babylon and Amityville took part and raised $1,039 for the campground. The money raised will purchase two bell tents, air mattresses, a fire pit and mini refrigerator. Troop 605 will cover the additional amounts needed. “It was a great night!,” Montiglio said.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK:

Charred Green Beans with Lemon Verbena Pesto

Fire Up The Grill For Fresh Veggies

Vegetables are more versatile than many people may know. Steaming or sautéing vegetables might be among the most popular ways to cook veggies, but grillmasters know that it’s not just main dishes that taste great when cooked over an open flame. As the following recipe for “Charred Green Beans with Lemon Verbena Pesto” from Karen Adler and Judith Fertig’s “The Gardener & The Grill” (Running Press) can attest, grilled vegetables make for simple yet satisfying side dishes.

Serves 2 to 4

1 1⁄2 pounds slender green beans

2 teaspoons olive oil

Lemon Verbena Pesto

1 cup fresh lemon verbena leaves (substitute fresh lemon balm leaves)

2 garlic cloves

1⁄4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1⁄4 cup pine nuts or English walnuts

1⁄2 cup olive oil

Fine kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Directions: Prepare a hot fire in your grill.

Toss the beans with olive oil and place in a perforated grill basket or wok set on a baking sheet.

For the Lemon Verbena Pesto, combine the lemon verbena, garlic, cheese, and nuts in a food processor and pulse to puree. Slowly add the olive oil with the processor running until the mixture thickens and emulsifies, about 1 minute. Season to taste with salt and pepper. The pesto will keep in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days, or it may be frozen for up to 3 months.

Place the grill wok or basket directly over the fire and stir-grill, tossing the beans with wooden paddles or grill spatulas until crisp-tender, about 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer the grilled beans to a large bowl and toss with about 1⁄4 cup of the Lemon Verbena Pesto or to taste.

2025 Relay For Life Cancer Walk/Events Scheduled On Long Island

Relay For Life is more than a walk, it's a community consisting of survivors, caregivers, thrivers, volunteers, teams, local businesses, and community organizations all to fund the mission to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. At Relay For Life, we gather around tracks and local parks and malls to walk together to fight back against cancer and show support to survivors. We host VIP complimentary Survivor Celebrations, enjoy music from DJs and local bands, dance groups, and students. As the sun sets, we illuminate our tracks and paths with luminaria bags in honor, memory, and support of all those touched by cancer. Overall, in 2025, there will be an estimated 2,041,910 new cancer diagnoses in the U.S. (5,600 each day) and 618,120 cancer deaths. Relay For Life has raised more than $6.9 billion to support these efforts since 1985 (and on our way to $7B in 2025), and $69 million was raised in 2023;

Relay for Life events on Long Island hope to add to that figure this year.

Councilmen Manetta And McSweeney Host A Career Fair

Councilman Anthony Manetta and Councilman

Terence McSweeney of the Town of Babylon recently organized a Career Day event, inspired by a 2023 survey from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York that underscores the urgent need to address workforce

shortages in the area. The event provided high school students and young adults, particularly those not pursuing college, valuable insights into various career paths. Attendees had the chance to connect with trade unions, first responder agencies, healthcare

professionals, and local businesses, making it an ideal opportunity for students, families, recent graduates, and guidance counselors. Councilman Manetta emphasized the importance of the event as a resource for exploring career options that do not necessitate a four-year

degree. At the same time, Councilman McSweeney highlighted that college is not the only route to success, advocating for alternative paths such as trade schools and apprenticeships that can lead to rewarding careers.

Windmiller.

“We are thrilled to welcome the United States Air Force Thunderbirds as this year’s headliners and look forward to an amazing show by all our performers,” said George Gorman, Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation. “Every year more and more people come

to our show, which has over the past 20 years become one of the most well-respected and well attended air shows in the country. It has become a great tradition for Long Island to honor our military and veterans and kick off the summer at Jones Beach.”

This year’s show will be the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds’ 10th appearance as headliners. Last year, over
