The Book Fairies, located in Freeport, NY, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that accepts donations of new and gently used books and connects them with organizations throughout all five boroughs and Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Some of those organizations are hospitals, schools, veteran organizations and soup kitchens.

Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups.

Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers.

The Book Fairies does more than just impact their local community; they are also dedicated to supporting literacy programs in underdeveloped nations around the world. Some of the books they receive that are in fair to average condition are packaged for partnering organizations to be shipped overseas! Since the program’s inception, they have helped build libraries in Africa, India, China, South America and the Caribbean Islands!

If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. - Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! Additionally, book donations and financial donations are always welcome and The Book Fairies is in need of corporate sponsors. Police Momument Dedication Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently joined Babylon Town Officials and other dignitaries in honoring the commitment and ultimate sacrifice of Suffolk County Police Department First Precinct officers at the dedication and unveiling of a Police Memorial Monument in Lindenhurst.

Spearheaded by Town of Babylon Councilman Terry McSweeney, the monument honors Suffolk County Police Department officers who served residents in the Town of Babylon and lost

their lives in the line of duty during their service.

First Precinct Commanding Officer Inspector Kevin Kane, other police officers and representatives from the First Precinct, County and local officials and members of the public attended the unveiling on October 26th.

The monument is housed in a colorful garden by a waterfall near the lake at Town Hall Park in Lindenhurst. Etched in stone on the monument are four Babylon police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty during the 1970s:

Detective Carmine Macchia, Patrolman George Frees, Patrolman Frank Cataldo and Officer William DeRosa.

“This beautiful public memorial is a demonstration of our appreciation and respect for those who made the ultimate sacrifice protecting the safety and wellbeing of our community,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I thank Councilman McSweeney for recognizing the need to honor these fallen officers, ensuring that they will never be forgotten.”

How to Make Use of a Jacket

Much of our suffering comes from our unwillingness to relinquish control. Everything from large sweeping intersections in our lives to the smallest details that plague us daily when they don’t go our way; we often operate under the faulty belief that we can use force, manipulation, or anger to bend the universe to our will.

Coming up to New York after living in Florida, my nine year old son grew accustomed to living his life in t-shirts and shorts, unencumbered by the heavy winter gear that New Yorkers wear. As the weather has grown colder, he has been resistant to wearing his jacket, hat and gloves; instead insisting on layering t-shirts and sweatshirts.

For weeks now, our morning routine has included me begging, pleading, warning him about getting sick, threatening to take away various priviliges, and at

times, shouting in exasperation.

“JUST PUT YOUR JACKET ON!” In reality, the thought of him getting sick, or even what the bus driver or teacher would think of me were my motivating factors for my panic. It was my own discomfort about the situation.

What I’ve realized is, ultimately, I don’t have control. My job as his parent is to empower him with love, values, ideas, compassion, and the information he needs to make the right decisions for himself. All I can do is sit back and allow him to experience the world.

This morning, as we were waiting together for the school bus to arrive, I observed that my son’s hat and gloves were inside his backpack; his winter jacket slung over his arm. None of these items were actually on his body.

I said, “Uh... you know, carrying a hat and gloves, and holding your winter jacket won’t keep you warm. They only work if you wear them.” He replied, “I know that.”

I nodded my head in mutual understanding and said, “Okay, good. I just want to be sure that

you’re aware of how the whole process works.” He stared at me and let out a sheepish giggle.

Slowly, he reached inside his backpack for his hat and placed the hat on his head for warmth.

Then, as if to say, “I’m not doing this because you want me to.

It’s my decision,” he slung his arms through his jacket. As a singular stance of independence, he skipped the gloves. I was okay with that. The allowing and the space of freedom it created caused my son to put on his hat and jacket. It was more effective than the begging, the pleading, the vague threats of catching a cold.

In life, the more we try to control others or our circumstances and surroundings, the more our desired outcome eludes us. Be in a state of allowing. Just as you would allow the water from a babbling brook to seamlessly run through your fingers rather than trying to clench and trap the water in your hands, allow things to simply be as they are, and watch as your suffering diminishes.

• Provide technical expertise to security professionals in the areas of installation, troubleshooting, upgrade and optimization of security hardware and software products.

• Determine the best solution for each inquiry, issue or request by applying and / or adapting existing knowledge and best practices.

• Utilize existing support tools, techniques and methodology.

• Participate in the capture of new knowledge and solutions.

• Document and track each customer interaction from initial contact through closure.

Required Qualifications and Skills: • Experience in alarm systems, security products, locking products, access control or video.

• Some experience in help desk, technical support, customer service or telephone support is desirable.

• Good computer literacy, including MS Windows-based systems and basic networking experience (i.e. understanding of routers, switches, TCP/IP, etc.)

• Extremely detail oriented, possess a high sense of urgency and demonstrate world class follow through skills.

• Customer service oriented, ‘people person’ with great communication skills (verbal and written).

• ‘Team Player’ with ability to work both individually and collaboratively.

• Able to work on site within the hours of 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday (full 8.5 hour shifts).

• Fluency in Spanish is a plus, although not required.

Students in kindergarten through third grade at Daniel Street Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District took part in a series of educational games and interactive lessons focused on financial literacy as presented by the trained corporate volunteers of the Junior Achievement program.

Junior Achievement is a nonprofit organization whose community and

corporate volunteers present lessons that focus on financial literacy, business and entrepreneurship, as well as college and work readiness. The programs presented are thematic, developed by K-12 educators and correlate to the New York State Social Studies Learning Standards.

Students in kindergarten began with a study of themselves, while first

The Power of One Albany Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District kicked off Red Ribbon Week with the powerful Soren Bennick antibullying program, “The Power of One.” The interactive program teaches students how to identify bullying, what

can be done about it and how every child has the power to end bullying by reporting it when they see it. This power is illustrated through a series of skits using boxes, colors and masks.

Skits emphasized the idea that bystanders are as guilty as bullies. They
