RESIDENT REMINDER: Wrong-Way Parking Enforcement

The Village of Lindenhurst is committed to the safety of our residents, and their quality of life. Therefore, in an effort to keep the continuingly prevalent problem of cars illegally facing the wrong direction of traffic on our Village roadways under control, we are once again issuing this public reminder:

In short, on a twoway roadway, as well as on one-way roadways, vehicles stopped, standing, or parked must be facing in the direction of authorized traffic movement on the portion of the roadway on which the vehicle rests.

New York Vehicle and Traffic Law - Section 1203 (Additional Parking Regulations) and Lindenhurst Village Code - Vehicles and Traffic, Chapter 18583 (Additional Parking Regulations) state, “every vehicle stopped, standing or parked upon a twoway roadway shall be so stopped, standing or parked with the righthand-wheels of such vehicle parallel to and within twelve inches (12”) of the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway.”

When someone parks their vehicle facing oncoming traffic, or parks against the flow of traffic, it is not only unsightly, but more importantly, they are putting the safety of others and themselves at risk. First, on a two-way roadway, you need to drive into the wrong side of the road to park facing traffic. Secondly, when you are parked facing traffic, pulling out into head-ontraffic is dangerous. You might not be able to see cars coming towards you while pulling out, due to a blind spot from vehicles parked the right way in front of you.

In summary, you must park parallel to, and within twelve inches (12”) of, the right hand curb or edge of the roadway. If you park illegally against the flow of traffic, it is a parking violation, and could result in a parking ticket starting at $75.00. Please be advised that the Lindenhurst Code Enforcement & Public Safety Officers enforce this traffic law, and will continue issuing summonses to violators. We ask that everyone be a good neighbor and park your car on the right side of the road.

Breast Cancer Survivors

Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.

Newspapers Have Helped Shape

The World

Newspapers have helped shape the world for decades, serving as invaluable resources that highlight both national and local news, retail information, cultural events, and much more. Although several newspapers now offer online versions of their publications, many readers remain partial to print versions. Those who purchase printed newspapers daily or subscribe to home delivery should consider recycling the papers to protect the planet. According to the environmental resource EarthEcho International, recycling a single run of the Sunday issue of The New York Times - or a comparable paper’s Sunday edition - would save 75,000 trees.

Lindenhurst Appoints Permanent Superintendent

The Lindenhurst Board of Education has named Vincent A. Caravana as the permanent Superintendent of Schools. The new superintendent brings nearly 25 years of experience in education to the role, including nearly 16 years in the Lindenhurst School District. He previously served as Lindenhurst’s Interim Superintendent of Schools for the 2023-2024 school year.

“When I think about where most of the building blocks of who I am as a person came from, I think about all of the excellent teachers that I had,” Superintendent Caravana said. “I started my career in education because I wanted to be that person for the next generations of students.”

Vincent A. Caravana started as a high school English teacher at West Islip High School in 2000 before moving to his first administrative position as Assistant Principal at Beach Street Middle School, also in West Islip, in 2007. He said working in public school administration not only allowed him to broaden his impact on student education but also gave him the opportunity to become a teacher and mentor to other

teachers.

“The science of teaching never stays stagnant. There are so many layers to how humans learn,” Superintendent Caravana said. “As an administrator, you’re not only working in the academic realm of education but also the social one. You are trying to get your teachers to grow and push themselves out of their comfort zone to become better teachers, but you can only do that if you have gained their trust.”

First coming to Lindenhurst as Coordinator of Secondary English in 2009, Superintendent Caravana became Assistant Principal

at Lindenhurst High School in 2013 before becoming Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Instructional Personnel in 2014 and Deputy Superintendent in 2016. Superintendent Caravana, a Lindenhurst High School graduate, said what makes the Lindenhurst community special is how friendly and welcoming it is. “We have a very family-like atmosphere here, and everyone really looks out for each other,” he said. “I’ve never seen a place with such a sense of synergy, camaraderie, and unified sense of spirit.”

Looking forward, one of his priorities will be to expand the District’s career and technical education offerings to give students additional paths to success after graduation. “We always talk about college and career readiness, but the emphasis has more often been on college readiness,” he said. “I think students should be presented with the opportunity of pursuing what they love, whatever it might be.”

Roll Up Your Sleeves To Save Lives Senator Martinez Urges Donations To Address

New York State Senator Monica R. Martinez is urging Long Islanders to “roll up their sleeves” in order to save lives. This follows an urgent call from the New York Blood Center (NYBC) for donations of type O+ and O- blood. According to the NYBC, there is currently a dangerous shortage affecting local hospitals, reflecting a troubling national trend with reported shortages of Type O blood across the U.S. The current inventory of type O blood is at its lowest since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Further complicating this shortage is a recent

Critical Shortage Of Type O Blood

surge in blood usage. In the past several days, 7 massive transfusion protocols (MTPs) have occurred across the region. MTPs involve administering 10 or more units of blood to a patient within 24 hours but can often require 50 or more lifesaving blood products per patient, placing tremendous strain on the blood supply. Type O+ is the most common blood type, representing nearly 40% of the U.S. population. Type O- is the universal blood type and is commonly used in emergency settings. A shortage of both types, both locally and nationally, poses

serious concerns for our healthcare system, and the need for donors is critical.

In addition, the region continues to struggle with the challenges that often accompany the summer months. Seasonal travel, school breaks, and a rise in traumatic accidents during the summer months often strain the blood supply and leads to shortages. NYBC is calling on all individuals with Type O blood to make an immediate donation.

“As Long Island faces a critical shortage of type O blood, I urge residents to help save lives by donating as soon as possible,” said Senator Martinez. “Having

an adequate supply of blood products during medical emergencies can make the difference between life and death. Be a lifesaver—make a donation today.”

NYBC hosts daily blood drives and operates 19 area donor centers to reach donors and meet local hospital needs. Blood donors can give every 56 days, and platelet donors can give twice per month. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently lifted several blood donor eligibility restrictions. To view current eligibility guidelines, visit nybc.org or call 800.688.0900.

153 Days

On August 1st, there will be 153 days left in 2024. That’s exactly five months or 21 weeks and six days to achieve the goals you set for yourself, your family, and/or your business at the beginning of this year.

How does it look for you? Are you on pace to hit your 2024 goals? Are you behind? Or did you say, “the heck with my goals” back in Feburary?

Some goals are harder than others to achieve. Buying or selling a home is one of them. It takes a lot of work and preparation to make the biggest purchase or sale you will probably ever make in your life.

Don’t wait for the “perfect time” to start thinking about buying or selling your home. Call me or send an email, and let’s start the conversation today so that when the market does change, you will be ready.

In the meantime, you have 153 days to hit your other goals.
