Did You Know?

Tea has been enjoyed as a beverage for thousands of years and has featured prominently in many cultures during that time. The cultural practice of drinking tea is believed to have originated in ancient China. Although there are many different types of tea, the World Tea Council says black tea is the most consumed tea across the globe, comprising around 75 percent of total tea consumption. The most popular type of black tea is Assam tea, which is grown in India. The second-most widely consumed tea is green tea, which accounts for approximately 20 percent of total tea consumption.

Father’s

Day is an opportunity to shower Dad with extra love and attention. Special outings and heartfelt gifts typically are part of the celebration. Some children may want to go above and beyond by whipping up a meal that Dad is sure to enjoy — particularly a father who spends his fair share of time by the stove or in front of the grill. Individuals may be quick to think steaks or chicken when considering grilled fare, and these foods certainly can be delicious offerings. However, juicy and flavorful lamb also tastes great when cooked on the grill. This recipe for “Lamb Chop Lollipops with Jalapeño Mustard” from “Jon Bonnell’s Texas Favorites” (Gibbs Smith) can be eaten by hand right off the bone when tailgating with Dad or served more traditionally at home with the family.

Serves 6-8

2 frenched* racks of lamb (8 bones each)

1 sprig fresh rosemary

2 tablespoons Chinese hot mustard

3 cloves garlic, minced

11⁄2 teaspoons kosher salt

1⁄2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

2 tablespoons olive oil

DIRECTIONS:

Rinse the racks of lamb lightly under cold water. Pat dry with paper towels, then cut into individual chops by cutting between the bones. Strip the rosemary leaves from the stem and chop; discard the stem. Combine the hot mustard with the garlic, salt, pepper, oil, and half of the chopped rosemary. Rub the lamb chops with this mixture and let them

marinate in the fridge for 2 hours before grilling. Grill or broil the lamb chops quickly to desired doneness. Serve hot with Jalapeño Mustard as a dipping sauce.

For the Jalapeño Mustard: Strip the rosemary leaves from the stem and chop; discard the stem. Combine the rosemary with the Dijon mustard, jalapeño, and lemon juice.

Presiding Officer McCaffrey Recognizes Kathleen Curran As Champion Of Diversity

On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, the Suffolk County Legislature gathered for their Third Annual Champions of Diversity Month Celebration!

Presiding Officer McCaffrey was proud to recognize Kathleen Curran as the honoree for Legislative District 14!

In November of 2022, the Suffolk County Legislature approved a resolution to designate April as “Champions of Diversity Month” in Suffolk County. The initiative highlights the importance of promoting diversity, inclusion, and cultural competence within the community. Each April, Suffolk County Legislators select a “Diversity Champion” from their District to be honored at the first General Meeting in April. This recognition aims to raise awareness of the critical role diversity plays in strengthening communities and to honor those who actively promote inclusion and respect for racial, cultural, and ethnic differences.

“This year’s celebration was again a tribute to innovative ideas, creative solutions, and the opportunity for diverse achievers to have their contributions to our County be valued, respected, and supported by not only the Legislature, but by residents of the County we love,” said Presiding Officer Kevin J. McCaffrey.

Presiding Officer Kevin J. McCaffrey was delighted to recognize Kathleen Curran, a respected English as a New Language Teacher at Lindenhurst Middle School, as the honoree of the 14th Legislative District.

The Kiwanis Club Of Lindenhurst Honors Students As Terrific Kids

The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst honored two fifth-grade students at the Harding Avenue and West Gates Avenue schools as Terrific Kids. Terrific Kids is a student recognition program created by Kiwanis International, promoting character development, self-esteem, and perseverance. Students work with their teachers to establish goals that improve their behavior, peer relationships, attendance, or academic performance.

other cultures.

Serving as an ENL educator, Kathleen is part of a program that helps promote awareness of the many different cultures in Lindenhurst, including many different Spanish speaking countries, Ukraine, Poland, Vietnam, China, Pakistan, Egypt, and even Sri Lanka.

With such a diverse student population, Kathleen has fostered the unique ability to teach students to appreciate each other’s cultures and how learning our similarities and differences leads to great personal enrichment. Further, it goes great lengths in helping us to accept and appreciate

Kathleen Curran has been an educator in the Lindenhurst School District for the last 21 years, with 15 of those as a proud English as a New Language (ENL) teacher.

In addition to ENL, Kathleen also took over “International Day,” a program that allows students to showcase their own culture and learn about different countries and cultures.

Since 2010, she has overseen the event filled with awareness and acceptance of cultural differences and the importance of learning, listening, and kindness for approximately 200 7th and 8th grade students each May.

“Kathleen is a truly selfless individual and takes great pride in putting her students first and promoting the beauty of diversity in our schools. She is indeed a Champion of Diversity,” said McCaffrey.

Did You Know?

Encouraging children to be physically active can be an important step in helping them to be healthier later in life. The Physical Rehabilitation Network (PRN) says active kids are more likely to become healthy adults. Studies have shown that being physically active and making smart food choices while young can lead to a reduced risk of developing many serious health conditions later in life, which can include diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease, and even certain cancers. Families can work together to help kids get on paths to better health and to become more active. This may involve putting limits on screen time and encouraging outdoor play and group active activities like sports or dance.

Reducing Your Risk Of RSV: What You Need To Know

As cold and flu season sets in, a seemingly simple cold could signal a more serious concern for some people— but there’s good news, too. The Risk of RSV

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that mimics cold-like symptoms. While many people recover quickly, RSV can cause severe illness, hospitalization, and even death in certain groups, particularly older adults. The

virus spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, and close contact. However, there’s a way to protect yourself: vaccination. Last year, RSV vaccines reduced the risk of hospitalization or emergency visits by 75%, making them a powerful tool in preventing severe outcomes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends RSV

vaccination for:

• Everyone 75 years and older

• Adults aged 60–74 at higher risk due to chronic conditions like cardiovascular disease, severe obesity, or diabetes, as well as those living in nursing homes. Unfortunately, chronic conditions are widespread in older populations. Public health experts encourage

you to discuss your RSV risk with your healthcare provider. Nearly 95% of adults aged 60 and older have at least one chronic health issue, and almost 80% have two or more, so talk with your healthcare provider if you have questions about whether you have eligible risk conditions. Taking Action Champions for Vaccine Education, Equity, and

Progress (CVEEP), a trusted source of information that advocates for access to recommended vaccines, emphasizes the importance of vaccination for those most vulnerable to respiratory illnesses, especially in underserved communities.

RSV vaccines can be given alongside other vaccinations, and they’re free for most people. Both private and public insurance

plans, including Medicaid and Medicare, cover RSV vaccines. Adults who are eligible can get vaccinated against RSV at any time of year.

Find a Vaccine

To locate an RSV vaccine near you and learn more about RSV protection options, visit www.vaccines. gov or www.CVEEP.org/ RSVReady.

Lindenhurst Junior Mayors

Attend Memorial Day Parade

The Village of Lindenhurst proudly celebrated Memorial Day on Monday, May 26, with its annual parade and ceremony. The 2025 Junior Mayors played a special role, marching alongside Mayor Michael Lavorata and Village Board members to honor those who made

the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

After the parade concluded at Village Hall, the Junior Mayors led the community in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance during the solemn ceremony. Their participation highlighted the importance of youth involvement

in civic traditions and remembrance.

The Village extends its gratitude to the United Veterans Council of Lindenhurst for organizing the event and to the Junior Mayors for their exemplary representation of Lindenhurst’s future leaders.
