Presiding Officer McCaffrey Recognizes Kathleen Curran As Champion Of Diversity

On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, the Suffolk County Legislature gathered for their Third Annual Champions of Diversity Month Celebration! Presiding Officer McCaffrey was proud to recognize Kathleen Curran as the honoree for Legislative District 14!

In November of 2022, the Suffolk County Legislature approved a resolution to designate April as “Champions of Diversity Month” in Suffolk County. The initiative highlights the importance of promoting diversity, inclusion, and cultural competence within the community. Each April, Suffolk County Legislators select a “Diversity Champion” from their District to be honored at the first General Meeting in April. This recognition aims to raise awareness of the critical role diversity plays in strengthening communities and to honor those who actively promote inclusion and respect for racial, cultural, and ethnic differences.

“This year’s celebration was again a tribute to innovative ideas, creative solutions, and the opportunity for diverse achievers to have their contributions to our County be valued, respected, and supported by not only the Legislature, but by residents of the County we love,” said Presiding Officer Kevin J. McCaffrey.

Presiding Officer Kevin J. McCaffrey was delighted to recognize Kathleen Curran, a respected English as a New Language Teacher at Lindenhurst Middle School, as the honoree of the 14th Legislative District.

The Kiwanis Club Of Lindenhurst Honors Students As Terrific Kids

The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst honored two fifth-grade students at the Harding Avenue and West Gates Avenue schools as Terrific Kids. Terrific Kids is a student recognition program created by Kiwanis International, promoting character development, self-esteem, and perseverance. Students work with their teachers to establish goals that improve their behavior, peer relationships, attendance, or academic performance.

other cultures.

Serving as an ENL educator, Kathleen is part of a program that helps promote awareness of the many different cultures in Lindenhurst, including many different Spanish speaking countries, Ukraine, Poland, Vietnam, China, Pakistan, Egypt, and even Sri Lanka.

With such a diverse student population, Kathleen has fostered the unique ability to teach students to appreciate each other’s cultures and how learning our similarities and differences leads to great personal enrichment. Further, it goes great lengths in helping us to accept and appreciate

Kathleen Curran has been an educator in the Lindenhurst School District for the last 21 years, with 15 of those as a proud English as a New Language (ENL) teacher.

In addition to ENL, Kathleen also took over “International Day,” a program that allows students to showcase their own culture and learn about different countries and cultures.

Since 2010, she has overseen the event filled with awareness and acceptance of cultural differences and the importance of learning, listening, and kindness for approximately 200 7th and 8th grade students each May.

“Kathleen is a truly selfless individual and takes great pride in putting her students first and promoting the beauty of diversity in our schools. She is indeed a Champion of Diversity,” said McCaffrey.

SCPD Distributes Over 100 Doses Of Narcan At 5K The Beat Lives On Run In Lindenhurst At The Venetian Shores Park Participants Also Made Memorial Rocks Honoring Those Lost

More than 50 participants in the May 18, 2025 The Beat Lives On 5K run to honor CJ Neumann were trained by the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) in the use of Narcan, the antidote to an overdose, and received a kit containing two doses of the antidote. Research indicates that fentanyl is now the number one cause of death in the United States for people between the ages of 18-45 years.

The training was conducted by SCPD Emergency Medical Service Officers Jason Byron and Alex Trzepizur, who work closely with the SCPD’s Behavioral Health Unit.

“The number of people who were willing to take five minutes out of their day to learn about opioids, fentanyl and the overdose epidemic was impressive,” said Byron.

Visitors also stopped by a table with purple rocks intended to be decorated with the names of loved ones lost to overdose and fentanyl poisoning.

Called the Purple Rock Project by the mothers who provide the rocks, the finished rocks are placed around parks and other locations, including Gabriel’s Giving Tree Memorial & Recovery Garden at Suffolk County Environmental Center

at the Scully Estate, 550 South Bay Avenue in Islip, as a reminder of how many Long Islanders have died from O.D. and fentanyl poisonings.

“Writing a child’s name on a rock may seem like a small thing, but I think it is a way of saying to the world that their child was once here,” said Carole Trottere, who lost her son Alex in 2018 to a fentanyl poisoning.

Quirky, Fun-Filled Things To Do This Summer

Long Island is one of the best places in the world to be in the summer. From the beaches to the restaurants, and the landmarks to the parks, Long Island has something for every resident and visitor. Here are five things you should consider adding to your bucket list for June – August.

1. Unusual Attractions & Roadside Wonders

Long Island has great, quirky landmarks. Have you been to the iconic Big Duck in Flanders? It’s a giant duck-shaped building that’s both a historic site and a gift shop and opened in 1931. In Montauk, the Montauk Point Lighthouse offers breathtaking ocean views. You should also make time to visit the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead, where you can dive with sharks (I’m happy

to be a spectator for this activity).

2. Festivals & Fairs

Summer is festival season on Long Island. The Empire State Fair returns to Nassau Coliseum from June 27 to July 13, featuring rides, live entertainment, and delicious fair food. For a cultural experience, check out the Long Island Celtic Festival & Highland Games at Old Westbury Gardens on August 23. It’s a celebration of Scottish

heritage with music, dance, and traditional games.

3. Offbeat Eats & Sweet Treats

If satisfying your sweet tooth is on your list this summer, head over to BonBon, a Swedish candy shop in Sag Harbor. They have colorful displays of your favorite confections. Longing for some nostalgia? Make dinner reservations at Swifty’s. They are located at The Hedges Inn in East Hampton and serve classic dishes in a charming setting.

4. Nature & Wellness Escapes

If you want to reconnect with nature, make plans to visit the North Fork’s beaches and vineyards. Wölffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack offers wine tastings at their beautiful vineyards. You can also

RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Lamb Chop Lollipops with Jalapeño Mustard

Father’s

Day is an opportunity to shower Dad with extra love and attention. Special outings and heartfelt gifts typically are part of the celebration. Some children may want to go above and beyond by whipping up a meal that Dad is sure to enjoy — particularly a father who spends his fair share of time by the stove or in front of the grill. Individuals may be quick to think steaks or chicken when considering grilled fare, and these foods certainly can be delicious offerings. However, juicy and flavorful lamb also tastes great when cooked on the grill. This recipe for “Lamb Chop Lollipops with Jalapeño Mustard” from “Jon Bonnell’s Texas Favorites” (Gibbs Smith) can be eaten by hand right off the bone when tailgating with Dad or served more traditionally at home with the family.

Serves 6-8

2 frenched* racks of lamb (8 bones each)

1 sprig fresh rosemary

2 tablespoons Chinese hot mustard

3 cloves garlic, minced

11⁄2 teaspoons kosher salt

1⁄2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

2 tablespoons olive oil

DIRECTIONS:

Rinse the racks of lamb lightly under cold water. Pat dry with paper towels, then cut into individual chops by cutting between the bones. Strip the rosemary leaves from the stem and chop; discard the stem. Combine the hot mustard with the garlic, salt, pepper, oil, and half of the chopped rosemary. Rub the lamb chops with this mixture and let them

marinate in the fridge for 2 hours before grilling. Grill or broil the lamb chops quickly to desired doneness. Serve hot with Jalapeño Mustard as a dipping sauce.

For the Jalapeño Mustard: Strip the rosemary leaves from the stem and chop; discard the stem. Combine the rosemary with the Dijon mustard, jalapeño, and lemon juice.

Did You Know?

Encouraging children to be physically active can be an important step in helping them to be healthier later in life. The Physical Rehabilitation Network (PRN) says active kids are more likely to become healthy adults. Studies have shown that being physically active and making smart food choices while young can lead to a reduced risk of developing many serious health conditions later in life, which can include diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease, and even certain cancers. Families can work together to help kids get on paths to better health and to become more active. This may involve putting limits on screen time and encouraging outdoor play and group active activities like sports or dance.

plan a wellness retreat at Naturopathica Spa in Bridgehampton.

5. Family-Friendly Fun

If you and your family are looking to cool off, enjoy a day at Splish Splash Water Park in Calverton. Alternatively, there is the Long Island FunFest which runs from June

12 to 22 and has carnival rides, games, and live performances.

If you run a business on Long Island and want to thank your loyal customers while introducing new people to your business, here are three suggestions:

1. Host Themed Events: It’s easy to organize summer-themed events or

workshops that align with your business (a hardware store hosting DIY projects, a restaurant having cooking classes).

2. Collaborate Locally: Think about partnering with neighboring businesses to create joint promotions or packages. You can introduce your customers to their business and vice-versa.

With the right packages or promotions, it can be a great “win-win” for everyone.

3. Use Social Media to Get and Stay Connected: With platforms like Instagram and Facebook, you can showcase your summer specials, share behind-thescenes content, and engage with your customers through interactive posts
