Farmingdale High School Welcomes New Inductees To The Wall Of Fame
Established to recognize exceptional alums, Farmingdale’s Wall of Fame stands proudly in the high school lobby, honoring those who have become inspirational figures for the community. On Wednesday, May 21, 2025, an intimate ceremony occurred at Farmingdale High School, where three new honorees were inducted into the Wall of Fame. Dr. Randee Bonagura (class of 1992), Captain Peter Crawford (class of 1968), and Ms. Jennifer O’Neill (class of 2013) celebrated this honor alongside their family, friends, District Administrators, and members of the Board of Education. “The Wall of Fame is not about being the most successful in your career,” said Farmingdale High School Assistant Principal and Chairperson of the Wall of Fame Committee, Carla Stillwell. “It’s about giving back to the community.” Before the ceremony, reporters from Farmingdale High School’s newspaper, The Paper Lion, had the opportunity to meet with this year’s honorees to gain deeper insights. The interviews became more than just an assignment; they served as a bridge connecting
generations. During the ceremony on May 21st, the student reporters introduced the honorees and shared a heartfelt tribute, highlighting the unique contributions and achievements of the honorees. For her exemplary leadership in education, significant contributions to the makerspace movement, and unwavering commitment to the Farmingdale community, Dr. Randee Bonagura was honored with an induction into the Farmingdale Wall of Fame. Dr. Randee Bonagura from the class of 1992 was sponsored by her mother, Mrs. Judy Bonagura. Captain Peter Crawford was recognized as a 2025 Wall of Fame inductee for his outstanding service in law enforcement, his dedication to his country, and his lasting influence on the safety and security of others. Captain Peter Crawford, a graduate from the class of 1968, is sponsored by his brotherin-law and Farmingdale High School psychologist, Dr. William Sperduto. Additionally, Ms. Jennifer O’Neill has been celebrated as a 2025 Wall of Fame Inductee, acknowledging her professional and
artistic achievements and profound impact on the Farmingdale community.
Ms. Jennifer O’Neill, from the class of 2013, is sponsored by her former and current Farmingdale High School Social Studies teacher, Candice Collazo. You can find the complete biographies of the 2025 Wall of Fame honorees on the district’s website: www.farmingdaleschools. org. The honorees, who had once walked the
halls of Farmingdale High School, now stood as inspiring examples of what could be achieved through hard work and perseverance. Located in the lobby of Farmingdale High School, the Wall of Fame showcases plaques
of past honorees, each a testament to the enduring spirit of the Farmingdale family. Candidates must have graduated ten years prior and demonstrated meaningful achievements in their professional journeys to be considered
for this honor. For more information about the 2025 Wall of Fame inductees, please visit the district’s website at https://www. farmingdaleschools.org. Photos courtesy of the Farmingdale School District

During this Terrapin Survival and Beach Cleanup Day, volunteers will be trained to identify signs of nesting terrapins, briefed on how to collect data and how to deploy protective cages around nests. These structures keep natural predators like raccoons and fox away from the terrapins, thus contributing to their survival. The event features a beach cleanup and tours of nesting sites.
Terrapin monitoring will take place for four to six weeks after the event and Team Terrapin volunteers will be encouraged to sign up for half-hour or one-hour monitoring shifts during weekdays and weekends. This is an excellent citizen science opportunity for people of all ages. Community service hours and certificates of participation will be provided upon request.
Terrapins can be found along the northern shore of Oyster Bay, especially at Centre Island Beach, with a large population at the head of Mill Neck Creek near Beaver Dam. To register for the event, volunteers should visit www. oysterbaytown.com/volunteerform. For more information, please email info@friendsofthebay.org

RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Pecan-Stuffed Pork Chops
Families celebrate Dad in unique ways on Father’s Day. Gifts are customary, but so is a delicious meal Dad will love. Many dads will appreciate a meal that goes above and beyond the ordinary, preferably something that is hearty and delicious. These “Pecan-Stuffed Pork Chops” from “Jon Bonnell’s Texas Favorites” (Gibbs Smith) are a great dish to serve family style when everyone gathers around the table for Father’s Day.
Serves 7-8
1 large rack of pork chops, bones in
4 tablespoons butter
1⁄2 yellow onion, chopped
2 ribs celery, chopped
5 cloves garlic, minced
1 1⁄2 cups chicken stock
DIRECTIONS:
Clean the rack of pork well and cut in between the bones to get thick individual pork chops. Cut a large slit down the back side of each chop and insert the tip of a knife 2 to 3 inches inside the chop to create a pocket for the stuffing. Do not poke completely through the pork or the stuffing will not stay in. In a large saucepan, melt the butter and sauté the onion, celery and garlic until the onion has slightly softened. Add the chicken stock, salt and cayenne and bring to a light simmer. Pour the contents into a mixing bowl and
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1⁄4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 cups panko bread crumbs
2 cups
2 cups roasted pecans, chopped
More kosher salt and pepper, to taste
add the panko bread crumbs and pecans. Mix together and let cool to room temperature. Stuff as much of the mixture into each pork chop as will fit (overstuffing is okay, too). Sprinkle both sides of each chop with salt and pepper to taste, then roast in a preheated 400 F oven for 12 minutes. Turn the chops over once and roast an additional 15 minutes. Check for doneness with a meat thermometer. Cook to medium, or 135 to 140 F.
What Is The Summer Solstice And What’s Notable About This Day?
June is a month to look forward to for a number of reasons. June is home to Father’s Day; the end of the school year in many locales; vacations often take place in June; and the summer solstice occurs for people living in the northern hemisphere. The National Weather Service says the summer solstice occurs when the Earth’s tilt toward the sun is at a maximum. When this occurs, the sun appears at its highest elevation, or when the sun
is directly over the Tropic of Cancer at 23.5 degrees latitude north. The sun’s noon-time position changes very little for several days before and after the solstice. With this positioning of the sun, people enjoy the longest day of the year in terms of daylight hours.

In 2025, the summer solstice occurs on June 20 at 1:41 p.m. EDT. Those in the southern hemisphere will have to wait until December 21 at 4:21 a.m. EST for their summer solstice. In celebration of the solstice, explore these facts about this remarkable day.
• The summer solstice occurs when one of the Earth’s poles is tilted toward the sun at its most extreme angle.
• Per each hemisphere, solstices occur twice a year: the winter and the summer solstice.
• Various cultures around the world celebrate the summer solstice with traditions, holidays and festivals.
• The summer solstice marks the official start of astronomical summer.
• The world “solstice” is derived from Latin and means “sun standing still.”
• Depending on one’s latitude, the length of daylight a person can enjoy on the solstice
varies. At the equator, the time from sunrise to sunset is roughly 12 hours. At temperate or mid-northern latitudes, the length of daylight lasts about 15 hours, says Space.com.
• Solstices do not land on the same calendar day every year because the astronomical year is 365.25 days long. So the solstices shift a day or two each year, but generally fall within the same three days. In the northern hemisphere, those days are June 20, 21 or 22 for the summer solstice.
• No one is quite sure who discovered that the solstices occur. According to Owen Gingerich, Professor Emeritus of Astronomy and History of Science at Harvard University, “[There is] no writing to record this great discovery.”
• The summer solstice often is when the golf season heats up. Many clubs take advantage of the longer days during the week the solstice takes place to host sunrise to sunset golf tournaments.
• Although the summer solstice is the longest day of the year in terms of daylight hours, typically it is not the hottest. It will take some time for the Earth to heat up with a greater tilt toward the sun. Hotter days arrive at the end of July and last into August.
The summer solstice is a time for celebration. The solstice brings more daylight and the official start of summer and offers plenty of reasons to get outside and enjoy the warm weather.
