Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America Hosting Free Memory Screenings For Long Islanders

Every Wednesday In June

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) will be providing free memory screenings for Long Islanders every Wednesday, during the month of June, from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm at its new Barbara Rabinowitz Education and Resource Center, located at 149 Schleigel Blvd, in Amityville. Screenings are open to everyone, with no minimum age or insurance prerequisites, and can be scheduled by calling 631223-4000.

Memory screenings are quick (approximately 1015 minutes), noninvasive, and consist of a series of questions to gauge memory, language, thinking skills and other cognitive functions. They are similar to other routine health screenings, such as those for blood pressure, cholesterol, and skin checks. Screenings are administered one on one by a qualified professional, and results are confidential and provided immediately at the end of the screening. Results are not a diagnosis, but a memory screening can suggest if someone should see a physician for a full evaluation. Early detection of memory impairments is vital. Many different conditions can cause memory issues, including treatable or curable conditions such as vitamin deficiencies, thyroid disorders, urinary tract infections, sleep apnea, stress, anxiety, and depression. Even in the case of a

dementia-related illness such as Alzheimer’s, early detection can provide greater opportunity to begin treatments when they are most effective, as well as taking part in a clinical trial. In addition, it affords the person the chance to take advantage of community services, such as support groups and therapeutic programming, which can help maximize quality of life, as well as have a greater say in making legal, financial, and health care decisions.

Residents wishing to get a free memory screening at AFA’s Barbara Rabinowitz Education & Resource Center can call the Center at 631223-4000 to schedule an appointment.

FPork Chops

amilies celebrate Dad in unique ways on Father’s Day. Gifts are customary, but so is a delicious meal Dad will love. Many dads will appreciate a meal that goes above and beyond the ordinary, preferably something that is hearty and delicious. These “Pecan-Stuffed Pork Chops” from “Jon Bonnell’s Texas Favorites” (Gibbs Smith) are a great dish to serve family style when everyone gathers around the table for Father’s Day.

Serves 7-8

1 large rack of pork chops, bones in

4 tablespoons butter

1⁄2 yellow onion, chopped

2 ribs celery, chopped

5 cloves garlic, minced

1 1⁄2 cups chicken stock

DIRECTIONS:

Clean the rack of pork well and cut in between the bones to get thick individual pork chops. Cut a large slit down the back side of each chop and insert the tip of a knife 2 to 3 inches inside the chop to create a pocket for the stuffing. Do not poke completely through the pork or the stuffing will not stay in. In a large saucepan, melt the butter and sauté the onion, celery and garlic until the onion has slightly softened. Add the chicken stock, salt and cayenne and bring to a light simmer. Pour the contents into a mixing bowl and

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1⁄4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

2 cups panko bread crumbs

2 cups

2 cups roasted pecans, chopped

More kosher salt and pepper, to taste

add the panko bread crumbs and pecans. Mix together and let cool to room temperature. Stuff as much of the mixture into each pork chop as will fit (overstuffing is okay, too). Sprinkle both sides of each chop with salt and pepper to taste, then roast in a preheated 400 F oven for 12 minutes. Turn the chops over once and roast an additional 15 minutes. Check for doneness with a meat thermometer. Cook to medium, or 135 to 140 F.

Insurance Tips And Information

Article provided by Ken Marcus and Mitchell Barber

How Much Dwelling Coverage Should You Really

Have?

In a world where home values seem to go up faster than your neighbor’s new auto lease…or a carton of eggs, it’s no surprise homeowners often ask:

“My house is worth way more than this insurance coverage. What if it burns down?!”

It’s a fair question—but let’s unpack the difference between market value and insurance coverage.

Dwelling coverage is designed to rebuild your home with like kind and quality materials—not to hand you a check for what your house might fetch on Zillow. In fact, insurers are legally prohibited from paying more than what it actually costs to rebuild. It’s not a lottery payout—it’s a

construction budget.

Think about it: If carriers paid out market value, every time someone was ready to move or retire to Florida, they’d just skip the Realtor and grab a matchbook. (Not exactly what you want your neighbor doing on a windy Tuesday.)

Instead, insurance companies calculate what it would cost to rebuild your home from the ground up—labor, materials, and local construction rates included…and yes, debris removal is part of that number. So, before you panic that your $750,000 home is only “insured” for $550,000, ask your agent what went into the replacement cost calculation.

Simple math—no fire required.

If you’re still unsure, ask your agent to review your coverage with you. It’s what they are there for. Because while it’s tempting to equate your home’s Zillow estimate to your insurance needs, the truth is: insurance isn’t meant to sell your house, it’s meant to rebuild it—after something you’d rather not experience.
