Did You Know?
Deep breathing exercises can help individuals maintain personal health and well-being. According to the American Institute of Stress, 20 to 30 minutes per day of “belly breathing,” also known as abdominal breathing or diaphragmatic breathing, can reduce stress and anxiety. The American Sleep Association reports that focusing on breath might be able to help induce sleep for people struggling to fall asleep. In addition to helping reduce stress and promote relaxation, breathing techniques are useful during labor to focus and release tension. Individuals with COPD often find it difficult to breathe, which can compound anxiety and make it even harder to breathe. But the COPD Foundation notes that two different breathing techniques can help an individual take in air without working hard: abdominal breathing and pursed-lips breathing.

thinking skills and other cognitive functions. They are similar to other routine health screenings, such as those for blood pressure, cholesterol, and skin checks. Screenings are administered one on one by a qualified professional, and results are confidential and provided immediately at the end of the screening. Results are not a diagnosis, but a memory screening can suggest if someone should see a physician for a full evaluation.
Early detection of memory impairments
is vital. Many different conditions can cause memory issues, including treatable or curable conditions such as vitamin deficiencies, thyroid disorders, urinary tract infections, sleep apnea, stress, anxiety, and depression.
Even in the case of a dementia-related illness such as Alzheimer’s, early detection can provide greater opportunity to begin treatments when they are most effective, as well as taking part in a clinical trial. In addition,
it affords the person the chance to take advantage of community services, such as support groups and therapeutic programming, which can help maximize quality of life, as well as have a greater say in making legal, financial, and health care decisions.
Residents wishing to get a free memory screening at AFA’s Barbara Rabinowitz Education & Resource Center this summer can call the Center at 631223-4000 to schedule an appointment.

It’s Always Special When Hometown Heroes Come Back To Give Back
— And Recently, Lindenhurst Was Lucky To Welcome One Of Its Own
Lindenhurst Bulldog and New York Jets star tight end
Jeremy Ruckert returned to his roots, spending several hours with local youth.
He ran drills, tossed the football around, and — most importantly — took time to talk with the kids about the importance of education,
listening to parents and coaches, and staying focused on their goals.
Councilman Terence McSweeney was at Venetian
Shores in Lindenhurst to welcome the NY Jets
Tight End and later said, “Seeing Jeremy connect with the next generation
was a powerful reminder of the pride and potential in our community. His visit was more than just fun—it was inspiring. Thank you,
Jeremy, for never forgetting where you came from and for showing our youth what hard work, humility, and heart can achieve.”
