“In the current economy and labor shortage, a DSP could easily go work for more money in fast-food, retail or an office environment,” said Robert White, Assistant Executive Director of Human Resources and Talent Management for Life’s WORC. “We are so lucky that many of our DSPs choose to stick it out and remain committed to us – all for the sake of the people we support and their families. We are forever grateful and are privileged to have hundreds of DSPs working at Life’s WORC, providing quality care to the people we support. Thank you DSPs. You are truly the heart of the organization. We value you.”

Although it is a paid position, many DSPs are fulfilling a personal mission (as well as Life’s WORC’s mission) to help people in need and become like family to those they work with and their families. They often share meals and holidays together; good times and not so good times; and recreation and vacations.

Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are well known to those serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and are truly the backbone of Life’s WORC. However, outside of the IDD field, the title of DSP is not as recognized, despite the fact that the work performed by a DSP is immensely valued by people supported and their families. DSPs assist the people they serve with achieveing their personal goals, which may include activities of daily living, and help them participate in programs that further enhance their life skills while ensuring a safe and comfortable environment.
Throughout decades that followed, Life’s WORC expanded its reach and opened more group homes. There are now 45 beautiful residences located in Manhattan, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk. Each home is maintained to the highest safety and health standards. Life’s WORC residents benefit from a person-centered approach, providing clinical services, emotional care and other supports needed for their personal fulfillment and well-being today and into the future. To complement its Residential Services, Life’s WORC offers Behavioral Analysis Services, Community Habilitation, Customized Employment Services, Day Habilitation, School-Based Services, and Respite and Family Support Services.
In 1971, a compassionate, driven woman organized a picket line to protest the deplorable living conditions for over 5,000 residents in the Willowbrook State School in Staten Island, NY. At the time, Willowbrook was the nation’s largest institution serving children with development disabilities, and it had fallen into massive disrepair due to budget cuts. That woman was Victoria Schneps Yunis. Her daughter Lara had been diagnosed with severe brain damage at an early age, and as a result she was among Willowbrook’s residents. Victoria and others advocated vigorously for the rights of those residents. One year later, their advocacy would result in a scathing investigative news report by television reporter Geraldo Rivera. His “Willowbrook: The Last Great Disgrace” report exposed the institution’s horrendous conditions, igniting widespread public outcry and ultimately forcing Willowbrook’s closure. For Victoria, this closure was just the beginning, and her efforts would result in the founding of Life’s WORC, an organization with a far-reaching impact and a very different mission for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism. Life’s WORC purchased its first group home in Little Neck, Queens with its first residents being former Willowbrook residents.

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health. The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

Through safe affordable supportive housing and personalized care management services, Options for Community Living, Inc. (Options) impacts the health and wellbeing of more than 2,200 Long Islanders annually. Their programs help vulnerable individuals and families – adults and children -- to develop their fullest potential for independent living. Their program participants have chronic illnesses and disabilities. They come to them from difficult circumstances. Some are homeless and others face eviction. Many are in crisis and with limited resources, every day is a struggle. With access to housing, healthcare services and community resources Options promotes stability, safety health, and welfare. Options was established in 1982 in response to the need for community-based supportive housing for people with serious mental illnesses. In February 2022, the organization reached a significant milestone, marking 40 years of continuous service to the Long Island community. Over the course of the last 40 years, their programs have grown and diversified to meet the changing needs of Long Islanders. In addition to serving people with psychiatric disabilities, they provide care management and housing for those living with HIV/AIDS and other chronic health conditions. With homes scattered across Long Island, last year, Options provided over 700 Long Islanders with permanent supportive housing. Additionally, emergency financial assistance and rent subsidy programs help countless homeless and at-risk individuals and families to access or maintain housing. Their staff links family members in need of support services to healthcare, benefits, childcare, social networks, advocacy groups and other local resources. Through access and engagement in health care, overall health and quality of life are improved, and emergency services are avoided which benefits both the individual and the community. Their impact is best demonstrated through the lives of those they house and serve! Adrienne and her family were referred to Options Rapid Rehousing Program following an emergency shelter stay. In rapid rehousing, Adrienne and her three children ages 16,14, and 7 found stability and had the support of a knowledgeable housing case manager. “My case manager has been great to me. She kept pushing me even when I didn’t want to push myself. I’m working now, and she helped me get my Section 8 (housing voucher) through whatever paperwork I needed. She made it happen, and I thank her for everything that she has done for me.” Rapid Rehousing provides short term rent assistance (up to 24 mos.) Once Adrienne obtained the housing voucher, she transitioned from the program. Her landlord accepted the voucher and she and her family are now able to stay in their home. With stability and improved health, many clients and their family members can set goals for the future. They can be connected to educational, vocational and employment resources. All these efforts positively influence income, can improve economic status, and contribute to ending the cycle of poverty. In the words of one resident, “when you treat a human being with value and respect, you empower that person to recognize and appreciate their own inherent goodness.”

They are currently seeking volunteer Veterinarians and Veterinarian Techs to donate their time at this mobile clinic. There is an urgent need for volunteers in this capacity and the organization is extremely flexible when they can come volunteer.

Their Animal Rescue Program rescues dogs and cats of any breed, background or age. It also addresses situations when a dog or cat needs fostering/surrendering while a Veteran or a First Responder has to undergo short term or long-term treatment in a medical facility or if they enter circumstances where they cannot take care of their pet for a period of time.
Their Training Program is where they train companion animals and service animals to support our Veterans and First Responders with any medical and/or mental health illnesses. They accommodate requests whether an individual received a rescue from them or have rescued the pet themselves; no Veteran or First Responder is turned away. If you would like to sponsor a dog in training for a Veteran or First Responder, please inquire with the organization.
Paws of War is funded entirely by public contributions; they depend on the generosity of their donors to continue their work. Any funds they raise will be applied to their programs (a donation can be given to a specific initiative of theirs if requested). A Mother & Daughter Duo Helps Long Islanders In Need
Sometimes the things we don’t expect and haven’t prepared for turn out to be the most life-changing experiences. Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that somewhat formed itself back in 2015.

Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Six years ago these two ladies knew of someone in need of clothing and simply wanted to see if they could be of help. They decided to start a Facebook group in hopes of spreading the word and receiving donations for this person in need. They posted a message and went on with their day, later checking in to find themselves overwhelmed with the Debbieresponse.andBrittany named the Facebook group Angels of Long Island and members would post about ways they could help others in crisis on Long Island. The group continued to gain in momentum and members, so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in East Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors Helping Neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” said Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience. I did not expect to be running a thriving non-profit organization that has a storefront on Long Island and helps so many in need when I made that Facebook group years ago. What has come since that group was formed is truly a miracle.”
The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their East Patchogue store, which is located at 350-23 East Main Street. They also love to hold many outreach events during the year such as a Back to School Drive, Thanksgiving Assistance, a Coat Drive, Christmas Help and more. Recently, they were generously giving out baby formula to whoever needed it. They are truly a blessing to our community. Their store is proud to take many types of donations. They accept bottle and can donations every Monday-Saturday from 9AM-3PM (all bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted). Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and furniture. All proceeds from this store go directly to help Long Island residents in need. Additionally, if you have some free time on your hands and would like to volunteer at the store, please contact Debbie at 631.205.3458. “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.” Proverbs 19:17

They recently rescued 30 cats and over 100 Beagles from two labs that were using them for animal testing. “We will fight for this,” said Robert Misseri, the founder of Guardians of Rescue. “But we need the backing of community members to help strengthen our position.” Each year, roughly 780,000 animals are used in regulated animal laboratory activities in the U.S. alone. Many are tortured in experiments that inflict pain and distress, yet they do not receive painrelieving drugs or treatments. The petition asking that animal testing be banned will be delivered to the U.S. Secretary of Health, Xavier Becerra, and the Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services, Andrea Palm. They directly oversee the agencies responsible for animal testing approval, oversight, and administration. Guardians of Rescue is asking people to sign the petition at:

The importance of giving back to one’s community is a value that parents can instill in their children at an early age. Learning about worthy causes in local communities can help develop empathy in children and give them insight into those who live outside of their social and economic spheres. has continued to do their good work throughout this pandemic. Today they are still helping others and when going to grant a wish, they are taking all the necessary safety precautions. Safety is a top prioity at The Twilight Wish Foundation. There are many ways that you can get involved with this great organization, please visit www.twilightwish.org or contact James Ciervo at 631-793-1065 or the Twilight Wish HQ at 215-830-8777 for more information.

The Twilight Wish Foundation has expanded throughout America and they currently have 17 chapters. The majority of their chapter directors and chapter volunteers have full-time jobs, but volunteer their time because they believe so much in the impact Twilight Wish has on our senior population. Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish.
The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. Sometimes a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population.

Twilight Wish recipients report that having their wish granted impacted their life for the better. Their mental and physical health often improved, positively changing their outlook on life! The wishes that this organization grants truly changes the way that our society views aging, as it witnesses seniors living life to the fullest. By sharing their recipients’ stories, they inspire both older and younger generations and help bring about a cultural shift in how aging is perceived in our society. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 4,626 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer

Studies show that Long Island has the second largest population of Veterans in the United States, second only to San Diego, California; Suffolk County has approximately 85,000 Veterans and Nassau County has approximately 75,000 Veterans. Many of our Veterans return home from performing the ultimate duty of serving our country only to face hardship, depression and substance abuse. “Just a few years ago I had a tough time integrating and now I’m a productive and happy father, husband and attorney,” said Patrick Donohue. “I currently practice meditation, BJJ , yoga, play ice hockey, and I float in a float tank as often as I can. All of these practices are best for me as they bring me into the moment. I believe the best way to overcome trauma is to be in the moment as much as possible. In the past I have participated in many of Project 9 Line’s programs, including stand up comedy, which also helped me immensely on my journey.” Patrick still works on himself day to day, but knows that even if you face hard times, you can eventually get through them. Through their extensive resources and hands on team, Project 9 Line wants to maximize the potential of all Veterans & Active Duty. The non-profit organization offers various weekly classes/clubs that they can participate in free of charge (some are even available free of charge to First Responders as well). Whether an individual wants to sign up for one in hopes to heal, to learn or just to be a part of something locally, there is definitely a spot for them. Each class is held at Project 9 Line’s headquarters: 25 Union Ave, Islip, NY 11751. For more information, please email info@project9line.org, call 631-841-1141 or visit www.project9line.org.

A 9 Line is a military term that Medevacs use for calling in a combat injury. Since it is such a stressful and sometimes hectic situation, 9 Line is the best way to calmly and accurately report that a soldier needs medical attention. It is very important that the information needed is communicated clearly to ensure that the soldier gets the care that he or she needs in a timely manner. Project 9 Line aims to be the 9 Line for the home front; if they get Veterans and Active Duty within their network and help them find purpose, then when and if those individuals have issues, they can help guide them to long-term wellness.

Domestic charities in the United States and Canada are vetted by various watchdog groups and regulated by certain government agencies, but there’s no guarantee that such protocols are in place overseas. That can make it easy for criminals and corrupt officials in foreign countries to gain access to donations intended to help those in need. • Volunteering can get a foot in the door. The National Association of Colleges and Employers reports that employers expect to hire 7.2 percent more new college graduates from the class of 2021 than they did from the class of 2020. That’s encouraging news, but recent graduates will still face stiff competition as they look for their first job. Volunteering with an organization in their field can be a great way for current students and recent graduates to get their foot in the door. Even if a ultimatelyopportunityvolunteeringdoesnotleadtoajob offer, the experience students gain can help them stand out in a crowded pool of job applicants down the •road.Volunteering can help students find a career path. A 2017 report from the U.S. Department of Education found that about 30 percent of undergraduates in associate’s and bachelor’s degree programs who had declared majors changed their majors at least once within three years of their initial enrollment. The same report noted that roughly one in 10 changed majors more than once. Those statistics suggest that many students are uncertain about what they want to study at the onset of their college careers. Volunteering before and during college can help students explore their interests and see where their skills are applicable. They can then rely on that experience as they choose a major.
Volunteering is often seen through the lens of how volunteers help to improve their communities. Though there’s no denying the valuable role volunteers play in strengthening their communities, it’s worth noting just how much volunteers can benefit from donating their time and effort to worthy causes. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness asked 70,000 participants about their volunteering habits and mental health.
