Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto invites seniors to participate in the Town of Oyster Bay Senior Karaoke Program, held at various community centers throughout the Town. The popular program, launched last year, saw such popularity it has returned bigger and better for residents who are interested in showing off their vocal talents. “We’re calling all Town seniors who love to sing! This fun Karaoke program will give you the opportunity to perform your favorite songs, from the tunes of Sinatra and Greatest Hits of the ‘80s to Today’s Top Songs, all in a social, welcoming environment,” Councilman Imbroto said. “Join us to make new friends and perhaps even discover a new favorite song.”

The Senior Karaoke Program takes place on the following schedule: • Mondays – 1 p.m. at the North Massapequa Community Center, 214 N. Albany Avenue in Massapequa (generally held at Marjorie Post Center, temporarily relocated) • Wednesdays – 1 p.m. at the Glen Head Community Center, 200 Glen Head Rd, Glen Head • Thursdays – 11 a.m. at the Hicksville Community Center, 28 W Carl St in Hicksville

Great singing skills aren’t necessary to join the fun; residents are welcome to attend without performing. There is no registration required for this program. A full karaoke machine, song list and light refreshments will be provided. For more information, please call the Department of Community and Youth Services, Senior Citizen Services Division, at (516) 797-7916.

“We are simultaneously creating jobs and an environmentally sustainable future for Long Island and throughout New York State.” In total, the OWTI awarded more than $8M in two rounds of funding to support SUNY institutions in preparing students and workers for a sustainable energy future. FSC was awarded nearly $900,000 in the first round announced last May. SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr. said, “To meet climate goals set by both President Biden and Governor Hochul, the offshore wind workforce needs to grow significantly over the next several years. That’s where SUNY and the Offshore Wind Training Institute come into play by developing programs to prepare the highly skilled, in-demand workforce that will power New York’s sustainable energy future. All of these projects

The recipients of the OWTI funding from FSC include: · Khosro Shirvani and Marjaneh Issapour, awarded $282,700 to embark on groundbreaking research exploring additive manufacturing techniques for the repair of wind turbine components. Their project seeks to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of offshore wind infrastructure. · Paulo Castillo and Supriyo Karmakar, awarded $371,914 to develop a cutting-edge workforce microcredential program. This initiative involves the acquisition of stateof-the-art equipment designed to detect blade defects, such as microcracks and erosion, ensuring the highest Madeline Quintyne, John King, Chancellor, SUNY; Dr. standards of safety and John Nader, President, Farmingdale State College. reliability in offshore represent the significant toward advancing New wind energy systems. Town Announces

Environmental Poster Contest For 4th Grade Students

To raise awareness on the impact of trees in our communities, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson announced the return of the Town’s Environmental Poster Contest, open to all 4th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year’s poster contest, Our Town Our Environment, invites youngsters to create a poster showcasing the importance of trees in preserving our environment, with a theme of ‘Trees for Tomorrow.’ “This poster contest presents a great opportunity to

bring environmental awareness to our young people, making them more knowledgeable on the importance of protecting Mother Nature and safeguarding our natural resources,” said Supervisor Saladino. Students should submit a poster to communicate awareness of the essential role of trees in our lives and may consider these key facts in their design: • Oxygen Production: Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, ensuring clean air. Did you know? 100 trees remove 53 tons of carbon dioxide and 430 pounds of other air pollutants per year.

• Air and Water Purification: Trees cleanse the air and water, promoting a healthier environment. • Shade and Cooling: Trees provide shade, cooling our neighborhoods naturally. • Wildlife Habitat: Trees offer food and homes for various wildlife, contributing to biodiversity. • Health Benefits: Trees encourage outdoor activities, promoting physical well-being. Submissions should be made on poster paper (no larger than 12”x18”). No edible items should be used on the poster. The top

three winning posters to be displayed at a Town facility and showcased in a future Town of Oyster Bay Environmental Newsletter. “This contest is being co-sponsored by Friends of the Bay and The Waterfront Center, two organizations we proudly partner with throughout the year to help our efforts in protecting and preserving the environment,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “I hope all fourth-grade students join us in this year’s program and take advantage of the great opportunity to become more knowledgeable on the importance of protecting our

environment.” Prizes will be awarded for the top three submissions, with 1st Place receiving a private tour of Oyster Bay Harbor aboard a Friends of the Bay vessel, a $200 gift certificate for the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay, a tree planted at the winning student’s school for Arbor Day, a nautical trivia game and Friends of the Bay apparel. Second and third place winners will also receive a gift certificate to The Waterfront Center and have a tree planted in their school district. Submission deadline for the contest is Friday, March 29th,

with winners to be announced on Earth Day, April 22nd. Along with their poster submission, students must include an entry form, which is available at www.oysterbaytown. com/postercontest. Mail or email posters to the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources, Attn: Poster Contest, 29 Spring Street, Oyster Bay NY, 11771. Entries can also be emailed to environmental@ oysterbay-ny.gov with the subject line ‘2024 Poster Contest.’ Visit w w w. o y s t e r b a y t o w n . com/postercontest for more details.

2023-2024 legislative proposals and to discuss the impact of pending and future legislation on public schools. Established to assist the Board of Education in implementing solutions

regarding legislative matters, the Committee focuses on assessing the impact of current and proposed State and Federal education legislation, promoting legislation that supports

the District’s mission, and communicating vital information to the community. The Legislative Action Committee comprises the Assistant to the Superintendent for

the LAC met with Senator Alexis Weik, Assemblymen Michael Benedetto, and Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio. Students also distributed Farmingdale proposals and lobbied for sustainable and predictable school funding, school safety, mental health, and wellness resources, and increased support for the needs of a shifting student population. “Our Farmingdale High School students made our community proud with their poise, advocacy, and self-assurance for diverse topics expressed,” said Assistant to the Superintendent for Administration Dr. Samuel Thompson. “I just want to express my gratitude to all those who helped make this event a success and to our students who represented us well!”

Residents Renew Wedding Vows At Special Valentine’s Day Ceremony Special Event Features Reenactment Of America’s First Valentine residents at a special Vow Renewal Ceremony held on Valentine’s Day at Town Hall. Co-sponsored by Raynham Hall Museum, the event featured a reading of America’s First

Valentine, which was written on February 14, 1779 in Oyster Bay. The story of America’s first Valentine is a proud piece of Oyster Bay history which dates back to the time

of the Revolutionary War, as British troops occupied Long Island homes. During the height of the American Revolutionary War, love improbably blossomed between Lt. Col Simcoe

and a young patriot named Sally Townsend as the Townsend property served as a headquarters for a regiment of 300 British troops. Lt. Col. Simcoe presented Sally with a

poem he wrote asking her to be his Valentine, and his famous poem, entitled ‘Will You Be My Valentine,’ became the first documented written Valentine in America.

RESIDENTS RENEW WEDDING VOWS AT SPECIAL VALENTINE’S DAY CEREMONY - Councilwoman Vicki Walsh, Supervisor Saladino, Town Clerk Rich LaMarca and Tax Receiver Jeff Pravato celebrated with 100 residents at the Valentine’s Day Vow Renewal ceremony at Town Hall, including Joe and Marie Cagna of Bethpage, who celebrated 56 years of marriage, and Audrey and Joe Rydzewski of Locust Valley, who celebrated 68 years of marriage.

It’s widely accepted that a year is 365 days long. However, that statement is not entirely accurate. It takes Earth more than 365 days (365.24223 days to be precise) to orbit the sun. A calendar cannot accommodate that small distinction every year. To ensure that seasons do not start drifting from the difference between the Earth’s rotation and the time it takes to get around the sun, leap years were established to keep the calendar more consistent and working like clockwork. The first

modern leap year took place in 1752. Certain guidelines were established to determine which years would be leap years. A leap year typically arrives every four years. However, in terms of endof-century years, they must be divisible by 400. That is why the year 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not, according to Royal Museums Greenwich. This approach is a partially foolproof plan since there still may be very small discrepancies in time. Leap seconds have been added to keep

time ticking correctly at various points throughout the years. This occurred on December 31 in the years 2005, 2008, and 2012, and also on June 30, 2015. In terms of adding a day to the calendar for the leap year, it is placed in February, which already is the shortest month. While February is typically 28 days, in leap years the month features 29 days. A leap year next occurs in February 2024, and then again in 2028, 2032, and 2036.

PUZZLE ANSWERS:

From The Desk Of Mayor Ralph Ekstrand “The Board of Trustees and I are proud to announce that Farmingdale Village was again Voted “Best Downtown – 2024 in the Bethpage Best of Long Island contest! This is amazing news – winning 9 out of the last 10 years! Thank you to all that voted & to all Residents, Merchants, Volunteers, Village staff, Organizations – All in our community, and to all that visit, and help our Village remain a thriving downtown Long Island destination. Congratulations to all Farmingdale/Long Island Best of Long Island 2024 winners”, said Farmingdale Village Mayor Ralph Ekstrand. LOVE IS IN THE AIR; IN THE VILLAGE! PRINCESS BRIDALS is a very successful family owned business and celebrating 53 years! And for those 53 years, Princess Bridals has been an integral part of the Long Island community, helping over 15,000 brides to find the Perfect Wedding Gown of their dreams. Run by owner Charles Prokop Jr; the bridal store was originally born out of need and there is a fun, award-winning, short film that tells the wonderful story on their website! And they have been a Farmingdale Village Fixture for 24 YEARS! Recently, to express gratitude for the unwavering support of the Long Island community, and commemorating 53 years, they held the “53 DRESSES EVENT!” PRINCESS BRIDALS decided to mark this special occasion by giving away 53 exquisite wedding dresses, collectively valued at over $100,000, to future brides of Long Island! These 53 wedding dresses represent not only years of service to their brides (customers) but also symbolizes the thousands of heartfelt connections made with the

brides who have chosen to entrust their special day to Princess Bridals. This gesture of kindness and generosity underscores their commitment to the Brides of Long Island while highlighting the enduring value of local businesses and their ability to create lasting and meaningful relationships with their customers. All winners got to attend an exclusive celebration! In his own words, Princes Bridals Owner, Charles explains: “Basically after 53 years in business we decided to give back to the community for Brides in Need. By that we mean Brides who have suffered from a Financial Hardship, Lost Parents, Coming back from an illness, etc. So we created a Contest, launching on Veterans day and then people completed an application to enter the contest by telling their heartfelt story. These 53 wedding dresses represent not only our years of service to our brides but also symbolizes the thousands of heartfelt connections we’ve made with the brides who have chosen to entrust their special day to Princess Bridals. We received over 100 applications, which made it especially hard to pick just 53. Many contained Love stories which were especially touching. The Contest ran through December 20th and on December 21st we selected the winners. Then the contest winners came in to select their gowns from Racks of Dresses we put out. On January 18th, we brought them to REID CASTLE on Manhattanville Campus in Purchase, NY to celebrate. We also had 20 Bridal Venders, so it almost morphed into a Mini Bridal Showcase - there were things they needed for their Wedding; Limos, DJ’s Photographers, etc.

M & V Limos of Commack donated two Party Buses to bring Everyone to the Castle. Farmingdale Village’s Mayor Ralph, The Board of Trustees and Village Staff were very helpful; they donated space in the Village lot behind the Firehouse for a safe place for the Brides and their Families to Park and meet. At 3 PM we met and bused everyone up to the Castle for the Event. We all want to send a BIG THANK YOU TO FARMINGDALE VILLAGE for all that; it was A GREAT help to the event. We are keeping in contact with these Brides; their Weddings are in 2024 and they seem VERY HAPPY. And we even invited the remaining Runner’s Up to the Castle Party and many came, and we sent them all an email offering a discount, etc. There were No Losers only WINNERS! The whole experience was incredibly heartfelt, we’ve done things like this, but this one was bigger and there was not a dry eye in the house! All the Brides and their families were over the moon. And let me say; we’ve moved from Hicksville to Farmingdale Village in 2000 and since then, the whole Village has embraced us in many ways!” Mayor Ralph Ekstrand: “Congrats to Princess Bridals on 53 Years & Giving joy to these Brides gives us joy as well. Love is in the Air in Farmingdale Village! Let’s make 2024 the best possible year it can be!! Voted Best LI Downtown 9X of last 10 years!

VALENTINE’S FOR VETERANS - On behalf of school children from throughout the Town of Oyster Bay, Supervisor Joseph Saladino presented thousands of “Valentine’s for Veterans” to AMVETS Post 88 Commander Loretta DiBrino (second from right), retired Air Force Sergeant Frank Marcinek (second from left) and wife Pam (right) and Gulf War Veteran Pete Sylvestri (left). Students from throughout the Town of Oyster Bay prepared beautiful valentines which are being distributed to Veteran organizations as well as to the VA. The initiative serves as an important reminder to our Hometown Heroes that their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

OF

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that applications are now available for families to add the names of loved ones to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 9/11 Walls of Honor which recognize all those with a connection to the Town who gave their lives and succumbed in their battle against 9/11 related cancers and illness. Each September, the Town unveils newly inscribed names into the Walls of Honor which recognize the family members, friends and neighbors lost to this toxic legacy. Supervisor Saladino stated, “We remember and give thanks to those who ran into danger in order to help the victims of a cowardly act of terror. This includes first responders, downtown workers,

residents, students and so many others with cancer certified to be 9/11-related. The events of 9/11 continue to take our heroes and survivors – and members of our community will continue to face darker days ahead. We watch each week as more of these heroes pass, in an everincreasing and unending number. Just as many of these rescue and recovery heroes raced to the Towers the first minute the plane hit, and stayed until the last brick was turned, their memorial stands with and lead us to those we lost that tragic Tuesday morning.” Reports from the World Trade Center Health program indicate that we are approaching a terrible milestone, in which approximately 43,000 people are being treated for medical problems and

10,000 people have suffered cancers linked to the toxic exposure at Ground Zero. More than 2,500 responders and others affected have succumbed to their illness. The 9/11 Walls of Honor were constructed under an initiative led by Supervisor Saladino, the Town Board and a volunteer committee that includes retired FDNY EMS Lieutenant Bill Gleason, Retired NYPD Detective Tom Luberto, Deacon Dave White, Jericho Fire Commissioner Frank Sammartano, North Massapequa Fire Commissioner Ralph Raymond, Massapequa Fire Commissioner Justin McCaffrey and Rescue & Recovery Worker Joseph Pinto. Applications may be downloaded at www. oysterbaytown.com/ wallsofhonor.
