Website Launched The Nassau County Coalition of Youth Services (NCCYS) launched today its new web site – www.supportnccys.org, which, via the power of crowdfunding, offers individuals the opportunity to help support the 37 notfor-profit agencies that continue to provide services to more than 35,000 children and their families in Nassau County. The NCCYS, established 15 years ago, is one of the leading youth service

entities in the state of New York and serves as a model for other community youth programs. Its members offer well-managed and established youth services including youth counseling, drug and alcohol prevention programs, employment services, suicide hotlines and a myriad of individual community based offerings. “The launch of the web site is tremendous for the NCCYS,” said Peter Levy, President of the NCCYS.

“We serve the community, but we are also driven by community support. Now we will be able to create heightened awareness of the NCCYS and further demonstrate the truly innovative programs we offer the youth of Nassau County.” The web site offers insight into the Coalition and its programs. It features a blog and photo gallery with images of youth services programs, workers and participants

throughout the county. Most notably, the site offers visitors the opportunity to donate money, which will be utilized to support the work of the participating agencies. Additionally, through crowdfunding technology, donors can share their support with their social networks and through Facebook. “The web site was not only created to increase fundraising, but to raise viral support for the Coalition,” said Adam

Haber, Nassau County youth advocate and Roslyn School Board Trustee. “It creates heightened awareness around the very important youth services the NCCYS provides Nassau County and demonstrates the critical role the Coalition plays in ensuring the well-being of our children.” Raising funds, however, is a considerable focus for the 37 member agencies which were hard hit when earlier this year

government funding was cut off mid-stream and withheld for six months. “We are hopeful that the new web site will help increase support and, ultimately, help to drive funds that will allow us to continue to provide leading youth services to Nassau County,” said Levy. The Bay Shore Soccer Club had a food and coat drive to benefit Hurricane Sandy victims and adopted several local families for Thanksgiving. The East Islip Soccer Club, assisted by the neighboring West Islip Soccer Club, hosted nearly 70 intramural and travel teams on November 18th and 19th in their “Soccer Over Sandy” tournament. $28,000 was raised for Hurricane Sandy relief and East Islip also made a $2,500 donation to the EJ Autism Foundation. The Auburndale Soccer Club in Queens collected money for a local family affected by the hurricane. The family has a child that plays for Auburndale, and once they heard that they lost their home and personal belongings, they started a collection at the club’s annual dinner dance. Over $1,100 was raised that night, which was matched by the club. Then a group of five coaches made additional donations to bring the total to $5,000. Auburndale was also able to set up a pick-up location through the club and shipped three truckloads of clothes and food to Staten Island. The team also collected money to help two families on the team that lost household items and one family who lost the first floor of their home. The Girls-Under-11 Manorville Starz adopted their division opponents, the Lindenhurst Lightning. “When they found out about the devastation in our community, their soccer families got together and put together donations for our community,” Lindenhurst Coach Tina Sarnicola said of the Manorville team. “Kristin (Mahoney), their head coach, drove out with an SUV load of donations. She drove out again the next day with donations, and they have also helped arrange a truck from Virginia to come with more supplies.” The Deer Park Soccer Club held a collection drive on Sunday, November 9th at their intramural fields. During this yuletide season of giving, we in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) especially acknowledge our leagues and clubs plus companies we work with that went beyond the proverbial extra mile to provide Hurricane Sandy relief. SportsSignup in Saratoga Springs made a $10,000 donation to the ENYYSA leagues most affected by Hurricane Sandy. The Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL), Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) and Staten Island Youth Soccer League (SIYSL) each received $3,333. “We are a national company but New York State is our home and even members of our own families have been affected by Hurricane Sandy,” commented SportsSignup CEO Anthony Bruno. “We wanted to give to these organizations to help them get back on their feet.” The LIJSL held a food drive on November 10th and 11th at the Peter Collins Soccer Park in Plainview and the LIJSL office in Ronkonkoma. 4,134 lbs. of food, personal care items and homecleaning supplies, as well as a van full of coats and blankets, were donated by Long Island soccer families. Hauppauge Soccer Club coach Joe Grippo organized a fundraiser on November 18 that raised $15,000 in donations and over 9,000 lbs. in nonperishable items for the

There are small signs throughout the neighborhood – a few lights on here and there, the glimmer of a Christmas tree through the window, the sound of Christmas songs filtering from the windows of passing cars… Tis’ the time of the season, as out of sorts as many of us may feel this particular holiday season. Life goes on, as we have seen. From storms and floods and uncontrollable acts of nature, to horrific tragedies from across the globe to our neighbors in Newtown, CT, as much as it seems that things

will never return to normal, somehow, they manage to progress to the point of at least being tolerable. The new normal, I suppose you could say, where we learn to make do while making adjustments on the fly. What is “normal” anyway? Personally, never before have I looked forward to a new year with quite the same level of anticipation. Sure, it’s just a flip of the calendar; but psychologically, there’s nothing quite like saying “good riddance” to a collection of not-so-great circumstances. And so, we look forward. Onward and upward, as they say. There’s nothing like good old-fashioned progress, snail’s-pace as it may be, to

refresh the spirit. For those displaced by Storm Sandy, the phrase “home for the holidays” doesn’t quite apply. But still, just being surrounded by those you love brings a certain degree of comfort that even the most dramatic upheaval can’t displace. Hopefully, within the next few months, the process of rebuilding what was lost will be further along the way to completion, and we can all settle back into our “normal” routines – only this time with a greater appreciation for what we have, mainly those things that cannot be replaced. Happy New Year to all… see you on the flip side.

General admission for Oyster Bay Town residents for two-hour public skating sessions at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is $3.00 for ages two to four, $5.00 for ages five through 17, $6.00 for ages 18 and older, and $4.00 for senior citizens 60 and older and Town volunteer firefighters and auxiliary police with identification. addition, ice rinks may be rented by resident groups for $300 per first hour. Non-resident groups can rent the rinks for $450 per hour. Charters are available when public sessions are not scheduled. All rinks may be rented by both residents and non-resident groups when skating sessions and other activities are not scheduled. For information, call 516.433.7465, ext. 8231. The Councilman noted that the skate shop at all rinks will be open during public sessions for renting skates at $4.00 per pair per session. Discount books for skate rentals are available. “Most of us think of ice skating simply as fun, but it also provides a terrific aerobic workout, as well as strengthening our lower body muscles and improving our endurance, coordination, balance and flexibility, as well as giving us a healthy dose of fresh air in the process,” Councilman Macagnone commented. “Don’t let age or perceived lack of athletic ability deter you from ice skating. You’ll see people of all ages and ability levels at the rinks. So, if you’re looking for some great family entertainment that provides fun and exercise throughout the holidays and the remainder of the winter, take a spin at one of our rinks.”

Holiday Craft Fair On Friday, December 7th,St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center, located at 52 Rt. 25A in Smithtown, hosted a Craft Vendor Holiday Fair. This event was held from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the lower level of St. Catherine Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. There was a variety of

vendors selling jewelry, accessories, candles, holiday centerpieces as well as other assorted items. The residents also participated by making handmade bracelets and selling them to raise funds to purchase bicycles for families in need. Due the generosity of staff and visitors enough

money was raised to purchase two bicycles and helmets. This gave the residents a wonderful feeling of giving back to all those who support them throughout the year. This was a great event in which families, staff and community came together for such a great cause.

exactly how he wanted to use the funds – giving back to the districts in the form of a dynamic countywide fiber optic network. In just two years, the lease – along with a series of federal educational technology rebates – has generated all of the funds needed to complete the project. “We are excited to be able to provide districts with an opportunity to reduce their costs,” said Pam Christensen, Executive Manager for telecommunications. “Equally important are the security and educational opportunities that a network of this magnitude will be able to provide.” Over time, the network will be configured in a series of interlocking “rings” that will provide resilience for the districts’ Internet and telephone services. It also will provide a robust, secure

Many school districts are starting the new year with lower telephone and Internet costs, thanks to their partnership with Nassau BOCES. The significant savings – at least 15 percent per district – are due to the development of one of the largest private fiber optic networks in the country. Called Bo-TIE, this network has already connected 16 of the county’s 56 districts and more than 12 others are scheduled to go online this year. The project is expected to be completed in 2015 – a dream come true for longtime Nassau BOCES administrators who conceived the idea more than a decade ago. When the agency was given the opportunity to lease its educational television channels, Anthony Carfora, Director of the Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology, knew

Arthur Krantz’s We Care for Kids sponsored the 3rd Annual Angela’s House Holiday Party last weekend, December 1st and December 2nd, for the organization’s medically fragile children and their families. The two funfilled days took place at a hall donated by The Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 25 in Hauppauge. Each year the children, their parents and siblings, and the entire organization look forward to the Holiday Season and the magnificent party that they are able to attend, in hopes of spreading some of the Holiday Spirit. Upon walking into the room,

guests experienced the magical décor including tons of balloons and stuffed animals, toys, inflatables, lights, and more. “It’s like taking the kids to Disney for the day,” said organization founder, Bob Policastro, “it’s beyond belief.” The main sponsor of the event is Arthur Krantz and his organization, We Care For Kids, who also provided entertainment for the children, as Krantz was dressed as King Arthur. Many others people donated their time to making this party a success, as well, including medical staff from Stony Brooks Children’s Hospital who helped

supervise the children. “Our many heartfelt thanks to him [Arthur Krantz] and all the volunteers who selflessly devoted their time to brighten the Holidays for our children. And to all the wonderful staff at Angela's House, thank you for all you do all year for so many who need you,” said Mary Costanza Mingoia, parent of an Angela’s house child. Another parent, John Kristen commented, “Thank you for the amazing holiday party on Sunday! Ava especially loved the kickline dancing girls!”

Mall Walking Program Residents can stay active this winter by signing up for the Town of Oyster Bay’s free Mall Walking Program. According to Town Councilwoman Elizabeth A. Faughnan, registration is underway for the twiceweekly program that gives anyone, regardless of age, the opportunity to exercise at area malls. “Many of us exercise regularly in the summer, but not as much when the weather starts getting colder,” Councilwoman Faughnan explained. “Walking is a wonderful form of exercise, something that can be implemented as a lifelong activity in an effort to stay active. The Town instituted this program to allow people to work out, regardless of the weather outside, and to learn some valuable tips on how to get the most benefits out of walking.” The popular program, which runs from Monday, January 14th to Thursday, February 21st, is offered at two locations, Broadway Mall in Hicksville and Westfield Sunrise Mall in Massapequa. The Hicksville Mall program

will run on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., and the Massapequa Mall program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Hicksville walkers will meet in front of the escalator near the Ikea entrance, and Massapequa walkers will meet inside on the main level in front of J.C. Penney. “The Town’s Co-Ed Walking Mall Program is the perfect way to start a new chapter of physical fitness in one’s life, resulting in a more fit and active lifestyle,” Councilwoman Faughnan said. “Mall walking is an excellent choice for anyone who has been thinking about beginning a new exercise routine. It’s a positive step for general good health and gives residents an opportunity to make new friends in the process.” Councilwoman Faughnan also noted the importance for residents to check with their physicians before participating in any physical fitness program. Registration forms can be picked up at Town Hall North and South, Community Park

facilities, and at local libraries. They can be returned to the Recreation Division at Town Hall South, Parks Department, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa or handed in the first day of the program. For more information, please call the Town of Oyster Bay’s Recreation Department at 516.797.4125, extension 3.

The Salvation Army traditional Red Kettle, so commonly seen near and in local malls and stores, has many helpers this season, bell ringing, singing and playing holiday tunes throughout the Long Island area. NUMC HOLIDAY PARTY - Three NUMC departments joined together, Case Management, Utilization Management, and Social Work, for a Holiday Party, led by Carol Clark RN and Lisa Mclaughlin LCSW. Volunteers will be required to attend training, pass a background check and exhibit a willingness to work collaboratively to provide positive direction to children and youth. Volunteers must be available at least one day each week between 2:30 and 4 p.m., Monday
