THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Bethpage Residents,

Springtime weather is gradually arriving, and we sense the feeling of renewal happening as early flower bulbs bloom and the trees begin to green up again. The Bethpage Chamber is also kicking off a new season right now as we install new officers and members on our board for 2023. We’d like to thank outgoing Chamber President Don Schiavetta of Campagne House for his inspiring leadership and setting so many things in motion for Bethpage and our chamber members.

Speaking of green…I’m sure everyone can agree that the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee orchestrated a fantastic weekend of celebrations at the beginning of March! There was an amazing turn out for first annual Connie Doolan Ball honoring Grand Marshal Rose Marie Walker, whom Bethpage has adopted as one of their own. The well attended event was a great night of fun with performances from the Schade Academy of Irish Dance dressed in beautiful authentic costumes, the Amityville Highland Pipe Band and festive live music from Gabe Hickey with Pat Jordan and Mike Ormsby at the Hartigan House that served delicious food and drink. We’re so lucky to have all of these talented folks among us!

The flags of Ireland were installed on downtown lampposts to honor the heritage of many Bethpage residents which set the background for the parade with so many amazing marchers from the community and local organizations. The Bethpage Fire Department showed off the fleet along with many other supporting departments along with several groups of Bagpipers to serenade the crowds all along the parade route. Much thanks to all that volunteered and participated in assisting committee chair Frank DeBobes for all the hard work to make it happen. We heard that the committee is always looking for more helpers.

Our chamber sponsored the Orange, Green & White balloon towers topped with mylar Shamrocks! They were put together by one of our newest members, Frank Ciminelli, who also ensured their delivery to the ball and parade which we surely appreciated! They were a fun way to decorate for the events so please look him up in our website member’s directory.

As the new Bethpage Chamber President, perhaps a brief introduction is in order? I’ve been with the chamber since 2019 and joined the board along with my husband Ron in 2020 then became Vice President and Director of Publicity. We own an Advanced Auto for auto repairs over on Hicksville Road. He grew up in town and is a BHS alumni so we’re very familiar with Bethpage and were featured last Spring in this publication with a very sweet take on our story by the lovely Laurie Ann Davis of 3 Stage Studios. We still get feedback from our customers from that article.

Looking ahead, our chamber is really excited about the upcoming events for this year which have become annual favorites by many residents here and nearby, and of course our chamber members. The summer music events and street fairs that we are involved in are already being worked on along with some additional projects for beautification and membership. We welcome every Bethpage business to join us or renew and get on a committee to help make 2023 the greatest year ever!

Stay Bethpage Strong!

Unleavened Bread The Foundation Of Passover Cooking

Passover is a Jewish celebration and one of the religion’s most sacred and widely observed holidays. Passover commemorates the Biblical story of the Israelites’ escape from 400 years of slavery in Egypt. In 2023, Passover takes place April 5-13.

Pesach, as Passover is known in Hebrew, includes all kinds of ceremonial foods. The Passover seder plate showcases specific items that relate to both the suffering and emancipation of the Jewish people.

Throughout Passover, the faithful abstain from any leavened bread products. According to Exodus 12:8: “They shall eat the flesh that night, roasted on the fire; with unleavened bread and bitter herbs, they shall eat.” Jews also are to remove all leaven (hametz) from their homes and eat unleavened bread for an additional seven days. Apart from being commanded by God, it is believed unleavened bread became traditional Passover food because the Jewish people departed Egypt in haste without time to let the bread rise. Furthermore, some say God also associated leavened bread with sin.

If there is one ingredient Passover celebrants may find challenging to work with during the holiday, it could be unleavened bread. Typically matzoh/matzah is substituted for other yeasted bread this time of year. One place matzoh really shines,

though, is in matzoh balls for use in soups or side dishes. A dumpling of sorts, matzoh balls are tasty and filling, and ideal for meals throughout Passover. Try this recipe for “Perfect Matzah Balls (Kneidlach)” courtesy of Chabad.org’s Kosher Cooking

Perfect Matzah Balls (Kneidlach)

Yields 4 balls per each 1⁄4 cup of matzah meal

(Meat, Pareve)

2 eggs, slightly beaten

2 tablespoons oil or chicken fat

2 tablespoons soup stock or water

1⁄2 cup matzah meal

1 teaspoon salt

1 quart of salted water or chicken soup, for cooking

Directions:

Beat eggs slightly with fork. Add other ingredients, except matzah meal, and mix. Add matzah meal gradually until thick. Stir. Refrigerate for 20 minutes in covered bowl.

Wet hands and form into balls. Drop into bubbling chicken soup or into a large wide pot into which 1 quart of water seasoned with 1 tablespoon salt has been added and has come to a boil. Cook for 30 minutes.

Prepared To Enter LI Workforce

Timothy Collins from Bethpage has successfully completed the Nassau BOCES Entry-Level Career Training Program, part of the agency’s Adult Education Program. He earned a Certificate of Achievement in the Porter course by administrators from the Adult Education Program during a recent ceremony. The program is housed at the Joseph M. Courses incorporate intensive training in a variety of essential trades including automotive technology, building maintenance,

food service, pet care, stock and inventory, and direct care. Each course includes a component in employability skills training. Job placement specialists work closely with students throughout the semester to arrange appropriate job placement and provide support services.

“Perseverance is the word that comes to mind when I think of this cohort of graduates,” says Brad Slepian, Adult Education Assistant Principal. “This group has worked extremely hard to complete their respective courses and are now career ready for jobs in their selected fields. We’re really proud of them.”

Why Is Easter Sunday Such An Important Christian Holiday?

Christians around the world fill church pews on Easter Sunday to participate in one of the holiest and most important celebrations of the liturgical year. Although every Sunday presents opportunities to share in the word of God, Easter Sunday is an especially significant date on the Christian calendar.

Each Easter, Christians celebrate the miracle of Christ’s defeat over death through his resurrection and ascension to his father’s side in heaven. However awe-inspiring, Easter is much more than this event and its retelling. Easter actually is the core of the Christian religion as it has come to be known, including inspiring the rituals and teachings that have been shared for nearly 2,000 years. Without the events that unfolded during Holy Week, the Christian

faith would not exist as it was prophesied. Christ’s selfless sacrifice on the cross for others’ sins, as well as his miraculous resurrection, are the anchors upon which all of Christianity has been built.

In 1 Corinthians 15:17, St. Paul wrote, “And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.” Pope Benedict VVI similarly summarized St. Paul’s words, indicating that if the resurrection were taken away, it may be possible to piece together ideas about God and men, but the Christian faith would be “dead.” In his book, Jesus of Nazareth, Pope Benedict further wrote, “Jesus would be a failed religious leader… he would then remain purely human, and his authority would extend only so far as his message is of interest to us.”

According to Christianity.

com, Easter is part of the redemptive plan of mankind. It is worthy of celebration because it proved to people that Jesus is the Son of God. This gives Christians confidence that there is life after death, and they will have the same power working in them that raised Jesus from the dead.

Out of Holy Week and Easter also came the start of Christian masses. On Holy Thursday, Jesus introduced his disciples to the bread that they ate at the Last Supper as “his body” and the wine as “his blood.” This would serve as the basis for the Christian celebration of Holy Communion, which remains a vital component of the faith and religious services.

Easter is a significant date on the Christian calendar that inspires Christians across the globe to celebrate their faith.

Bethpage elementary school students in grades 3-5 recently learned the importance of selfacceptance and selfcare with the help of middle and high school students. Members of Bethpage High School’s SADD (Students Against

Self-Love Soars In Bethpage

Destructive Decisions) club visited Central Boulevard Elementary School and Kramer Lane Elementary School, while John F. Kennedy Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society members visited Charles Campagne Elementary School to

present to classes.

The secondary school students spoke to the elementary students about positive affirmations and how to embrace yourself. The students learned how to celebrate their uniqueness and watched a video of author Grace

Byers reading her book “I Am Enough,” which reiterated the message of being kind to yourself and having confidence.

After watching the video, elementary students worked on a culminating activity. They each drew a photo of their face and

surrounded it with words or sentences about what makes them special. Afterwards, some students presented their worksheets to their class.

The collaboration was a positive way for the secondary school students to educate others on

how to boost their selfconfidence, while also strengthening their own public speaking skills. In return, the elementary students enjoyed looking up to the middle schoolers and high schoolers on this important topic.

Passover Is A Celebration Of Freedom

Passover begins the evening of Wednesday, April 5th, through the evening of Thursday, April 13th

Passover is a Jewish celebration that typically occurs around the same time as Christian Easter. In 2023, Passover

begins the evening of Wednesday, April 5, through the evening of Thursday, April 13th.

According to the

religious resource My Jewish Learning, Passover is a festival of freedom that marks the Israelites’ exodus from

Egypt and their freedom from slavery. The term “Passover,” which is also known as “Pesach,” coordinates with a key moment in religious history.

According to texts, the Egyptian Pharaoh refused to liberate the children of Israel, despite requests from Moses and his brother, Aaron. The pharaoh was warned that his people would be punished if the pharaoh did not comply. Persistent and obstinate in his refusal, Pharaoh was subjected to 10 plagues, each more devastating than the previous one. These plagues included blood, frogs, bugs, flies, pestilence, boils, hail, locusts, darkness, and finally the demise of all

firstborn males. To be spared the penultimate devastation, Israelites were instructed to sacrifice a lamb for a meal and to mark their doors with its blood. The Lord would see the blood and pass over that household, sparing the occupants’ sons. Because Passover is so symbolic, Passover seders, which take place either on the first Friday or both the first and second Friday of Passover, feature many traditions. It is customary to read the Haggadah at the seder table, but celebrants who cannot come together may share these important stories, blessings, and songs via an online video chat. In addition, if Passover

celebrants cannot make it to the store or find all of the ingredients for their seder plates, substitutions may need to be made. Traditionally, an egg, bitter herbs, a shank bone, parsley, haroset (chopped mixed nuts, fruits, and cinnamon), and lettuce are included. Celebrants can even experiment with making unleavened bread at home if necessary. If horseradish for a bitter herb is unavailable, any item that can cause tears, such as ginger or raw lemon, may be substituted.

Passover is an important part of Jewish history and a holiday that is celebrated each year with vigor.

Local Girl Scout Troop 730 Learns About Our Most Precious Natural Resource…Water

Bethpage Water District hosts interactive educational program on the importance of water conservation

March 16, 2023 – Bethpage NY, U.S.A. – As part of its ongoing commitment to educate our youth about the importance of water, the Bethpage Water District recently hosted Girl Scout Troop 730 for a tour of their Plant No. 6 location on Saturday, March 4, 2023. A group of Girl Scouts and their parents were guided through an hour-long tour led by Bethpage Water District Superintendent Mike Boufis where they were taught about the water cycle, where our water comes from and how water hits their home’s tap. Learning lessons were embraced by the troop, especially around the importance of water conservation and what they can do at their homes to be a water conserver and make a difference to help create a sustainable environment.

During the tour, troop members saw and were taught how water treatment methods work to ensure everyone experiences great tasting quality drinking water every day. Troop members were able to witness firsthand all the behind-the-scenes technology that brings water to the surface, giving them a better understanding of what the District does to delivery high quality water to all consumers of Bethpage.

“To see these troop members so engaged while learning about their drinking water makes tours like these so special,” said Superintendent Boufis. “Our hope is that these young children will have a greater appreciation for what it takes to deliver high quality drinking water. Most importantly, we shared a lot of fun and helpful conservation tips that they can easily apply at home that the children were excited to learn.”

Each troop member was given a gift bag with a Bethpage Water District water bottle, coloring book, stickers, yo-yo, reusable bag, and a few more notable items. Most importantly, each earned their “Water Patch” based on their learning experience with the Bethpage Water District and how they can help conserve water in their communities.

Roasted Lamb Is An Easter Sunday Classic

Easter is a religious holiday that occurs each spring. Easter commemorates and celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter is full of symbolism, but it’s also steeped in traditions, including family meals.

Lamb is a popular Easter Sunday meal and this recipe for “Roasted Lamb with Roasted Asparagus” from “Feast of the Seven Fishes: A Brooklyn Italian’s Recipes Celebrating Food & Family” (Powerhouse Books) by Daniel Paterna can make for the perfect Easter entrée. Lamb is most tender in spring and mild in flavor and it pairs well with the earthiness of asparagus.

Roasted Lamb with Roasted Asparagus

Serves 8 to 10

Lamb:

1 leg of lamb or loin of lamb, about 4 to 5 pounds

5 garlic cloves, sliced

2 tablespoons olive oil

4 cups dry white wine

1 fresh bay leaf

4 sprigs fresh rosemary

4 to 5 sprigs fresh thyme

Directions:

Cut small slits in the meat of the lamb with a sharp paring knife. Insert a slice of garlic into each slit. Place the lamb in a large sealable plastic bag and add the olive oil, 2 cups white wine, bay leaf, rosemary, thyme, salt, and pepper. Seal the bag tightly and place in the refrigerator to marinate for 12 hours.

Remove the lamb from the fridge the next day, at least 4 hours before roasting. Keep the lamb sealed in the marinade bag and allow it to come to room temperature.

Heat the oven to 400 F. Remove the lamb from the bag with marinade. Place it on a rack in a roasting pan. Add 2 cups of wine. Roast for 11⁄2 hours or until the thermometer reads 150 to 160 F. Baste with drippings while roasting. Serve warm.

Asparagus:

4 pounds of asparagus, remove woody ends

2 cups coarse bread crumbs

1 cup grated Romano cheese

2 tablespoons garlic powder

Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

4 large eggs

Sea salt, to taste

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 400 F.

Place the bread crumbs, cheese, garlic powder, and black pepper in a dish or bowl wide enough to hold the asparagus. Mix well to combine thoroughly.

Put the eggs in another dish or bowl of similar size and beat well. Working in batches, dip the spears into the egg, making sure they are coated well. Immediately place them in the breadcrumb mixture and toss until each spear is fully coated. Transfer the breaded asparagus to a large baking sheet.

Place the asparagus in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes or until the breading is browned and crispy. Serve with wedges of fresh lemon.

Students Meet With Children’s Book Author

Elementary students from throughout the Bethpage Union Free School District received a special visit from children’s book author and editor Shana Corey. Corey stopped by Central Boulevard Elementary School, Charles Campagne Elementary School and Kramer Lane Elementary School to speak with

students about her books and her life as an author.

Writer of “Players in Pigtails,” “Milly and the Macy’s Parade,” “The Secret Subway,” and many more, Corey shared her writing process and the journey on getting a book published. She also educated students on the difference between fiction and non-fiction and read

some of her book, “The Secret Subway” to classes. At the conclusion of her presentations, students asked Corey questions about her life and more about her books.

The visit was a great way for students to better understand what an author does and inspired them to write their own stories.

Student-Scientists Honored At Long Island Science And Engineering Fair

Six science research projects from Bethpage High School were awarded at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair on March 7. This included one which will send a team of students to the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair this May.

Bethpage juniors Joy Kim, Sofia Maciel-Seidman and Riya Saha received first place in the Environmental Engineering category for their project, “Developing a Hydroponic System with the Incorporation of an Arduino Uno Powered pH Sensor” and will attend the ISEF in Dallas, TX. The ISEF is the largest precollege STEM competition in the world where students compete for nearly $6 million in awards. Kim, Maciel-Seidman and Saha’s project is the third in the history of the Bethpage Science Research Program to advance to the international level.

In the same

Environmental Engineering category, junior Ankur Raghavan earned second place with his project, “Reduction of Agricultural Water Consumption through the Utilization of a Wireless Sensor Array.” He also received the U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize which was presented to the best water-science projects. With this award, Raghavan is invited to compete at the state level in the SJW competition.

Juniors Zoe Chinda and Parisa Pitranggon were recognized in the Earth and Environmental Science category. Chinda earned third place for her project, “Minimizing Nitrogen Fertilizer Use for Residential Lawns.”

Pitranggon received Honorable Mention and a special award from the Association for Women Geoscientists for her project, “The Effects of Fertilizers with Different Levels of Element Content

on Soil pH.” The special award was presented to students with projects that exemplified high standards of innovativeness and scientific excellence in the geosciences.

In the category of Animal Science, sophomore

Devaanshi Kawatra earned Honorable Mention for her project, “Investigating the Role of Sunlight in Regenerating Planarians.”

In the category of Math, Physics, and Astronomy, junior Miraj Shah earned Honorable Mention for

his project, “The Impact of New Base Size on Major League Baseball Outcomes.” Shah also earned a special award from the Office of Naval Research – U.S. Navy & Marine Corps., which was presented to high-

achieving projects. The Bethpage Union Free School District congratulates these eight talented students on their awards and wishes Kim, Maciel-Seidman and Saha the best of luck as they compete at the next level.

Collection Drive To Support Veterans At VA Hospital

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Clerk

Richard LaMarca today announced that the Town will host a “Spring into Action” Collection Drive in support of the Northport VA. During the month of April, residents are invited to donate toiletries and clothing.

“From hosting veteran appreciation events to recognizing

their service with Hometown Heroes Banners in our parks, the Town of Oyster Bay is committed to honoring veterans for their service to our nation,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Please join this mission to help bring the comforts of home to veterans living at the Northport VA Hospital by making a donation to our collection drive during the month of

April.”

Most needed items include toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, unscented deodorant, body wash, unscented lotion, nail clippers, and shampoo), clothing (men’s underwear size 2XL & 3XL, men’s sweat suits size 2XL & 3XL, socks, flip flops, pajamas, and scarves), and entertainment (magazines, movies,

and CDs, especially Greatest Hits of the ‘50s & ‘60s).

“When I learned that the Northport VA has a “Wish List” of items their veterans need, I knew Supervisor Saladino and the Town Board would spring into action with me to help ensure these needs are met,” Clerk LaMarca said. “I thank them for partnering with

me to organize this critical initiative, and I thank the residents of our wonderful Town in advance for their generosity and support of our Veterans.”

The Town’s Collection Drive will run through the month of April. Collection Bins will be available on weekdays from 9:00am to 4:45pm at Town Hall North (54

Audrey Ave, Oyster Bay), Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa), and the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center (1001 Stewart Ave, Bethpage).

For more information, please call (516) 624-6380 or email ealter@ oysterbay-ny.gov.
