The American Lung Association of the Northeast is seeking charity runners to support its lifesaving mission by running in the 2015 United Airlines NYC Half marathon on Sunday, March 15th.

The Lung Association has four remaining guaranteed entry charity bibs available for runners who commit to raising $2,500 dollars each to support the Lung Association’s ongoing efforts to promote healthy lungs and healthy air.

Runners who have already gained entry to the NYC Half are also invited to join and fundraise with the American Lung Association of the Northeast’s 2015 NYC Half Marathon Team.

Last year half marathon runners contributed nearly $13,000 to support the Lung Association’s mission of saving lives by preventing lung disease and improving lung health.

“While the Lung Association has been a participating charity in the New York City Marathon since 2011, this will be only our second year as a participating charity in the New York City Half,” said Jeff Seyler, President & CEO of the American Lung Association of the Northeast. “After being involved last year and having such a great experience, we knew we had to be involved again. ‘Tis The Season For Memories By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Christmas time is here, once again, and as we all prepare to celebrate the season with our families, friends and loved ones, I find myself reminiscing upon the many fond memories of Christmas’ past. With that sentiment in mind, some excerpts from last year’s Christmas column…

As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house.

So many years spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma

bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s.

Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family

Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today.

By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend!

Cookies With Santa The Christmas season officially began at Good Samaritan Hospital Nursing Home with the 5th Annual Cookies With Santa program on December 4th.

All the residents and their families enjoyed crafts, cookies and hot

chocolate, with Christmas music provided by a DJ. There was also a visit from Santa with a photo opportunity for the whole family.

To help make the season more meaningful, staff assists the residents in

writing out and sending their loved ones beautiful cards for Christmas.

Later in the month, the recreation staff will wrap a small gift for each resident so that everyone has something to open on Christmas.

Leonardo Figueredo won Suffolk County Community College’s Chopped-like culinary competition Battle for the Beach with a delectable baked airline chicken breast with natural au jus and butternut squash risotto seasoned with cream and fresh thyme.

Student contestants were presented with a mystery basket of ingredients - a whole chicken and butternut squash - that they had to turn into a mouthwatering dish.

The competition is similar to the popular reality television show “Chopped” airing on the Food Network.

The judges - five of Suffolk’s faculty chefs and Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun McKay - evaluated each student’s creation on creativity, presentation and taste.

Huntington’s Victoria Shannon placed second with her roasted breast of chicken paired with roasted cauliflower, garlic mashed potatoes and butternut squash. Candice Weiss of Bayport placed third with baked chicken, roasted maple glazed butternut squash and asparagus spears.

Top Chef Leonardo Figueredo won a sevennight stay at the Sheraton Clearwater Beach Resort in Clearwater, Fla., and an opportunity to work under the supervision of the resort’s executive chef.

The prize includes roundtrip airfare and ground transportation.

The West Babylon School District bids farewell to Superintendent of Schools Anthony Cacciola, who will step down for purposes of retirement, effective January 10th, 2015.

In a letter to the Board of Education, Cacciola said, “The past 38 years have been rewarding and memorable. The friends, colleagues and associates I have come to know are countless and many will always be a part of my life, but I am ready to begin a new chapter.”

Cacciola is a graduate of West Babylon Senior High School and says he remembers the days when he used to ride his bike

to the junior high school prior to having a driver’s license. He accepted his first position in 1976 as custodian for the district in 10th grade, working his way through the department and holding the positions of head custodian, chief custodian, asbestos compliance officer and superintendent of buildings and grounds. He took on the role of school business administrator in 1993, followed by his appointment to assistant to the superintendent for finance, a position he held for five years before becoming assistant superintendent for finance. In 2007, Cacciola was named the district’s superintendent of schools.

Outside of the district, Cacciola served as president of the Suffolk County Association of School Business Officials from 2004-2005 and as president-elect of the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association in 2014.

Board of Education President Lucy Campasano said it has been a pleasure to watch Cacciola rise to the position of district superintendent.

“He has been a watchdog for West Babylon Schools,” she said. “He always helped guide our finances. We shared a common bond for the students of the district and he will be missed.”

Cacciola said he leaves the district with a “sense of pride and accomplishment and with rewarding memories and experiences.” He said the district is fiscally sound and students continue to receive a well-rounded education with multiple extracurricular activities.

“Although I am moving to Florida, I will always call West Babylon my home,” Cacciola said. “I will never forget the motto ‘Once an Eagle, always an Eagle.”

On December 17th, Marc Rosenzweig of Willow Pet Hotel presented a check from their second annual fundraiser, which raised $1,883 for the purchase of canine bulletproof vests for the local K9 units. Additionally, after seeing the story on NEWS 12, Ballistics Expert for the NYPD, Sal LaCova of Survival Armor, donated an additional vest for the cause to be presented at the event.

Willow Pet Hotel’s 2nd Annual Pet Awareness Festival was a great success in raising funding for canine bullet proof vests. MTA K9 officers James Chirillo (K9Danny), James Finn (K9-Glenn- named after the late Glenn Pettit), Alan Fong (K9-George), Al Kirsch (K9-Sentry) and Robert Savage (K9-Cannan) donated their time by demonstrating how they work with their canines and explaining the importance of bulletproof vests. Since most municipalities lack the funding to provide canine vests, the event was important in creating awareness, as well as raising funds for the purchase of vests.

At one point during the fundraiser, the spotlight was on officer James Finn.

Officer Finn was interviewed by News 12 Long Island due to his decision to name his dog, K9 Glenn, in honor of NYPD Officer Glenn Pettit, who was tragically killed on September 11th, 2001. With that in mind, Willow Pet Hotel decided to donate these bulletproof vests in honor
