In celebration of International Dot Day on Sept. 15, South Bay Elementary School students in the West Babylon School District engaged in hands-on activities during their library classes with library media specialist Ms. Levy. Each grade level began class with a story that focused on adopting a growth mindset.
In kindergarten, students used the Quiver app,
which features artificial intelligence technology, to turn students’ simple dot creations into amazing 3D wonders that jumped off the page.
In grades one, two and three, students challenged their minds by completing a STEM project. Each student was given 12 dots and 12 pieces of cardstock to construct the tallest possible tower using only those supplies. Students were creative
with how they used the materials to build their structures.
Fourth and fifth graders chose a pre-printed quote about growth mindsets they felt most connected to. Then, they discussed how graphic design could be utilized to turn the quotes into images, using Canva to create visual representations. When finished, the quotes and graphics lined the hallway.

Reworld™, a leading sustainable waste solutions company, recently served as a major sponsor and provided all the food for this year’s Backpack Pirates program, run by the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. In addition to supplying the food, Reworld™ supported their supply drive, which contributed to the overall success of the program. The annual event welcomed nearly 200 homeless and at-risk children to spend a day at summer camp, filled with exciting games, activities, and memorable experiences. This marks the 3rd year that Reworld™ has provided food and support to the Backpack Pirates program.
“Providing food for the event ensures that these children can enjoy
their day without worry, allowing them to fully participate in the fun and create lasting memories,” said Maureen Early, Lead Community Relations Specialist at Reworld™.
“This event is especially meaningful for the kids, as it gives them opportunities to engage in activities they might not normally be able to experience.”
The Backpack Pirates program included a variety of engaging activities such as sports, field games, arts and crafts, treasure hunts, a theater show, swimming at the beach, DJ and dancing, and much more. By sponsoring this event, Reworld™ continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting local communities and enhancing the lives of those in need.
These experiences are designed to boost self-esteem, encourage teamwork, and provide a sense of normalcy and joy that these children may not often have. The company’s contribution of a whole day’s worth of food ensures that all participants can focus on having fun and making memories, without the distraction of hunger.
“The need for assistance is growing each year,” said Greta Guarton, Executive Director of Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. “Our organization is beyond grateful to Reworld™ for their generous support and to other members of our community who come together to help our less fortunate neighbors.”

On Tuesday, October 8, at 7:30 PM Author Betsy McCully will present Sea of Grass: Long Island’s Salt Marshes, a slide-illustrated talk on our once vast salt marshes. The presentation will be at the Freeport Memorial Library, 144 W. Merrick Road (at S. Ocean Avenue).
Her latest book, At the Glacier’s Edge: A Natural History of Long Island from the Narrows to Montauk Point, explores our natural world through her eyes as a longtime resident. She tells the story of how Long island was formed at the end of the last ice age, how the Island’s diverse habitats
evolved, and the efforts of environmental activists to restore what humans have degraded.
McCully is a retired professor at Kingsborough College of CUNY. Her first book, City at Water’s Edge: A natural History of New York, recounts a timeline that extends backward half a billion years, discussing the depths of Manhattan’s geological history. This South Shore Audubon Society Meeting is open to the public. For more info on the program or to contact South Shore Audubon Society, go to www. SSAudubon.org.

Connetquot River State Park Preserve is a bit of Long Island the way it used
to be. Designated as the first “State Park Preserve” in New York, Connetquot River encourages the long-term protection of our ecological, cultural, and historic resources. Visitors can enjoy passive activities, such as hiking, birding and nature study. As a nature preserve, bicycling, picnicking and pets are not permitted. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation oversees more than 250 parks, historic
sites, recreational trails, golf courses, boat launches and more, which saw a record 84 million visits in 2023. For more information on any of these recreation areas, visit parks.ny.gov, download the free NY State Parks Explorer app or call 518.474.0456. Join us in celebrating our Centennial throughout 2024, and connect with us on Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and the OPRHP Blog.
