Merchant Marine Academy
Eric Stephen Gollinge, son of Stephen & Debbie Gollinge, of Lindenhurst recently graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point, NY. Gollinge earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission in the U. S. armed forces. He also earned a Merchant Marine officer license, qualifying him to serve as an officer on any ship in the U.S. flag merchant marine.
Gollinge is a graduate of Lindenhurst High School.
The United States Merchant Marine Academy is one of five U.S. federal service academies. It educates and graduates licensed Merchant Marine officers to serve the nation during peace and war. In addition to the rigorous academic and physical requirements for admission, applicants must be nominated by their Congressman or Senator. Gollinge was nominated by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
All USMMA graduates incur an obligation to serve the United States. The U.S. Flag Merchant Marine –manned exclusively by American mariners – is essential for securing the country’s commerce in peacetime and delivering warfighters, weapons, and military supplies in times of conflict. The majority of “Kings Pointers” serve for eight years as Navy reservists in the Strategic Sealift Officer Program while working aboard U.S.
flag vessels; others will serve on active duty in our nation’s armed forces.
Gollinge will fulfill his commitment serving on his Unlimited Third Assistant Engineer’s License in the US Merchant Marine and as a US Navy Strategic Sealift Officer.
By virtue of their elite training and real-world experience, graduates are ready to go on day one in service of American military strength and economic power. As part of his four year education, Gollinge spent one year training as a cadet aboard ocean going vessels. The Academy welcomed Secretary of Transportation Sean P. Duffy as the
commencement speaker. Secretary Duffy told the graduates, “The mission you all are about to embark on could not be more important at this very moment when our nation confronts conflict in the Middle East. Whether it’s the Strait of Hormuz or the South China Sea, there are rough waters ahead. You will find yourself in harm’s way. And you do it for your country.”

Lumiere Ballet Delivers Inspiring Performance
On Saturday, August 2nd and Sunday, August 3rd, the Town of Babylon community gathered at Tanner Park in Copiague for a captivating performance by Lumiere Ballet, featuring dancers of all ages—from young students to seasoned professionals.
Thanks to the efforts of Suffolk County Legislator Jason Richberg, who secured the funding for the event, residents were treated to an unforgettable evening of fine arts on the waterfront.

Come the first Monday of September, many children and their parents start to face the reality that school, if it hasn’t yet started, is about to begin again. That’s because Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer. But there is much more to this holiday than barbecues and the notion that fall is right around the corner.
Labor Day was forged by the labor movement of the late nineteenth century. Many workers during this time felt they were underpaid and overworked. Conditions at their places of employment also lacked adequate safety. These workers banded together to fight for higher wages, shorter workdays and improved working conditions.
Before it was adopted as an American federal holiday, Labor Day was first recognized by labor
activists and individual states. Although New York was the first state to introduce a bill, Oregon actually was the first to pass a law recognizing Labor Day, which the state first celebrated on February 21, 1887. Four more states followed suit that year. By the end of the decade, three more states passed Labor Day holiday laws.
In recognition of the momentum of Labor Day at the state level, and with the adoption of the holiday by another 23 states by 1894, Congress passed an act on
June 28, 1894, officially making the first Monday in September a legal holiday each year.
The United States is not alone in devoting a holiday to celebrate its labor history and honor the contributions of workers. Canada celebrates Labour Day to remember the rights of workers, which include paid holidays, medical care, fair hours, union wages, and safe workplaces. Labour Day was declared a legal holiday by the Parliament of Canada on July 23, 1894. The earliest Labour Day celebrations were held in the spring, but eventually were moved to September. Labor Day remains a time to honor and affirm the dignity of working people across the nation. It also affords individuals an opportunity to enjoy a welldeserved day off.

For the fourth year in a row, the Plumbing Contractors Association of Long Island (PCALI) proudly sponsored a pizza lunch for the campers and staff at Sunrise Day Camp, a no-cost summer camp for children battling cancer and their siblings.
This year’s lunch, which fed several hundred campers and 200 staff members, was held during one of the most anticipated events of the summer Color War, a spirited tradition that brings joy, energy, and friendly competition to the camp community.
Sunrise Day Camp provides a much-needed escape for children facing serious health challenges, allowing them and their siblings to enjoy the fun of summer in a supervised, emotionally supportive environment all free of charge. The camp is a sanctuary for healing,
