Why Car Washes Are Important
Taking care of a vehicle involves more than just maintaining the equipment under the hood. Car washes keep a vehicle shiny and clean, which can help it look good while sitting in the driveway or cruising the highway. However, regular car washes are more than cosmetic.
• Protection from the sun: A car that is routinely and properly washed and waxed is less vulnerable to damage from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
• Extend the life of paint: Dirt and debris can build up on the paint surface and eventually lead to scratches and other damage. Bird droppings and sap can be corrosive. Washing will help remove grime and protect the paint in the process.
• Preserve the vehicle’s value: Drivers who plan to sell or trade in their vehicles in the future should realize that a wellmaintained car can bring in as much as 20 percent more for above-average condition, according to Kelley Blue Book. Maintaining a clean and shiny vehicle can protect its long-term value.
• Remove salt: Drivers who live near the ocean or in areas where roads are salted in the winter to melt snow may have cars with high salt corrosion rates. Unless it’s washed off frequently, salt can take its toll, leading to damage.
• Improve fuel efficiency: Drivers have felt pain in their wallets at the fuel pump in recent years. Dirty cars may be less aerodynamic and less fuel-efficient as a result. Keeping a car clean may improve its fuel efficiency.
• Maintain the interior: Car washes are not only about the exterior. Keeping a clean and tidy interior can help improve the air quality inside of the vehicle and prolong the life of upholstery, mats and interior components.
Deer Park High School Team Wins Award At Virtual Enterprise Trade Show
Deer Park Holds Commitment Day For Incoming Football Falcons
Deer Park High School’s VE team attended the Virtual Enterprise Trade Show on March 27, pitching their Trailblaze business idea to their peers. Held at Lynbrook High School, the event featured 60 Virtual Enterprise firms comprised of more than 1,000 students from 38 different high schools across Long Island. Each team of young entrepreneurs set up a booth to promote their business, networked with peers from other districts and invested in other student’s companies, gaining valuable insights into running a business. The Deer Park students won first place in the Firm Spirit competition. This award is presented to the booth with the highest amount of customer traffic, produced by the school business team that demonstrates the most enthusiasm, energy and school spirit throughout the event.
“Winning the Firm Spirit award means that our team attracted customers by engaging with judges, customers and other firms,” business teacher Jill Perry-Eising said. “Part of the award is also for unique branding and innovative marketing efforts. Our team did this by bringing an amplifier with them, playing party music and encouraging students from other school to line dance with them. They also raffled off homemade cupcakes and candy to entice customer attention.”
Cody Ciolino, who will take over as Deer Park High School’s new varsity football coach this August, held the first ever Commitment Day on April 8 for Robert Frost Middle School eighth graders who plan to play football in high school. During the event, held in the Frost cafeteria, the incoming athletes were introduced to the varsity and JV staff, received varsity jerseys for the day, learned about team expectations and rules, and signed commitment letters to the Falcons football program.
“Getting the title of head coach is something I take great pride in, and I am looking forward to working with the kids here in building the program,” said Ciolino, a seventh-grade special education teacher at Frost and past varsity football assistant. “We are going to build it from the middle school up, and we are going to make this program a community property. We are going to be focused on each step of the process. You’ll never hear my coaching staff or myself talk about wins and losses. It’s not important right now. What’s important is laying the foundation the right way, so when Sept. 12 comes, we’re in a situation that we win a football game.”
“This is your first introduction to Deer Park High School from both an academic and an athletic standpoint,” Principal Charlie Cobb told the eighth graders. “Tonight really begins your journey as student-athletes. There are three things I want to talk to you about that are going to propel you from middle school to Deer Park High School: hard work, perseverance and dedication. These three characteristics will allow you to be successful in whatever you do in life. If you can hone in on those things right now, as young eighth graders who are going to be ninth graders next year, you are going to be successful, not only athletically on the playing field, but academically as well.”

Honoring 17 Role Models At Deer Park’s Breakfast Of Champions
Deer Park High School’s administrators and teachers honored the character and accomplishments of 17 dedicated students at the annual spring Breakfast for Champions, held in the school’s library on April 9. As their proud families applauded, the students were recognized in categories corresponding to school departments as well as principal’s and teacher’s awards. The event featured music from a high school
string quintet consisting of Maxwell Ferguson (cello), Gloria Min (violin), Kelsey Rotzman (viola), Lorelai Silverstein (bass) and Lissha Varghese (violin).
Students were honored in the 15 school department categories of athletics (Talon Silverstein), business (Joseph Pinto), English language arts/library (Mia Rodriguez Osorio), English as a new language (Antonio Zacarias Leon), family and consumer science (Dave
Osorio Lara), fine arts (Diana Joveini), guidance (Laetie Neifort), health (Emma Corley), math/computer science (Desire Soria), performing arts (Cassidy Boltz), physical education (Elizabeth Ochoa Carrero), science (Moriah Carridis), social studies (Adriana Herbster), technology (Bryan Ramlakan) and world languages (Briana Tavares), as well as the Principal’s Award (Christian McMillan) and Teacher’s Award
(Alexander Plangetis).
“This morning’s event is an opportunity for our teachers and administrators to honor students who may have impacted them in some way,” Associate Principal Garret Noblett said. “The students here show exceptional conduct and character on a daily basis. The stories we will hear today recognize students for their achievement, hard work and determination to overcome obstacles. We have students
who have either worked on achieving their personal best inside and outside the classroom, demonstrated good citizenship, or shown compassion to help others.”
“This event is really one of our most favorite days of the year,” Principal Charles Cobb said. “We get to recognize students for their outstanding accomplishments that they have at Deer Park High School. Students are here for a wide variety of reasons.
They might not be academic, athletic or based in the arts. Many times, it’s because the students are good, solid people who do the right thing day in and day out, and these are the role models, the types of kids that we want other students to emulate.
Congratulations to all our winners this morning. All the great things that you do make Deer Park High School such a special place.”

RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Wee Chicken & Waffles with Jezebel-Maple Syrup
Children
commonly like to give their mothers a break from cooking on Mother’s Day. Youngsters may be eager to help out in the kitchen and whip up something that Mom is certain to enjoy. But many recipes can be complicated for younger children or others who might not be so adept with meal creation. However, with a few ingredients that families may already have on hand, it’s possible to craft a delicious Mother’s Day brunch. This recipe for “Wee Chicken & Waffles with Jezebel-Maple Syrup” from Denise Gee’s “Southern Appetizers: 60 Delectables for Gracious Get-Togethers” (Chronicle Books) utilizes commercially available miniature waffles and popcorn chicken bites to create a chicken and waffles dish with a kick. Serve alongside mini muffins, deviled eggs, cheese and crackers, and other brunch dishes that are simple for youngsters and their little fingers to prepare.
Serves 10 to 12, Three or Four Waffles Each Jezebel-Maple Syrup
2 cups maple syrup
1/4 cup pineapple preserves
1/4 cup apple jelly
1 1/2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
3/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
Directions:
1/2 teaspoon salt
40 mini waffles from a 10.9-ounce package, lightly toasted
40 pieces cooked fried popcorn chicken
Finely chopped fresh Italian flat-leaf parsley or green onion for garnish (optional)
Hot sauce for serving
To make the syrup: In a large microwave-safe glass measuring cup with pour spout (one holding at least 3 cups) or a bowl, add the maple syrup, pineapple preserves, apple jelly, horseradish, pepper, and salt; whisk to combine.
Microwave the mixture on high for 35 seconds. (You also can heat it in a small saucepan on low until the mixture is warm.) Stir and taste, adjusting the flavor if desired. Set the syrup aside.
Place the toasted waffles on a large serving platter. Top each waffle with a piece of chicken. Drizzle the chicken-waffle bites with about 1 teaspoon of the syrup. Garnish with the parsley, if desired, and serve with the remaining syrup and hot sauce.
